When Homer's dad (Chris Cooper) shows up for the Rocket Boys' last launch, Homer (Jake Gyllenhaal) lets him push the button.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
NASA engineer Homer H. Hickam, Jr.'s autobiography provided the basis for this drama about a teenager coming of age at the dawn of the space race. In 1957, Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a high school student in Coalwood, West Virginia when the Soviet Union launches Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. While most of his friends and neighbors react with fear or distrust, Homer is instantly fascinated and begins studying everything he can find on jet and rocket design. While many of Homer's friends are puzzled by his new obsession, several new friends share his enthusiasm, and with the encouragement of his teacher (Laura Dern), Homer and his fellow "Rocket Boys" begin designing and launching their own homemade missiles. However, Homer's father (Chris Cooper) takes a dim view of his son's interest in rockets and is convinced Homer's future should be the same as his own, working in the local coal mines. October Sky mixes the drama of traditional family conflicts with a nostalgic glimpse of life in the mid-50's and a look at the earliest days of our journey into space.

I gambled on 1 career that people barely hear about but all it took was 1 guest speaker and I knew it was right for me.
If it wasn't for scifi and movies like these I wouldn't want to keep going. "It's ADD" no it was depression with an over active brain but I can't blame them since they did try helping me. The days I don't work I'm a mess, I am made to fix things.

I think what makes this scene/movie work is because we all have seen 'kids with big dreams' movies before, but those movies are mostly about dreams about going to the big city, or to become a star or something self centered like that. Here it's about something more personal and that's something you don't see a lot of in movies especially for younger audiences. This is a GREAT movie for kids.

The soundtrack for this film makes me cry! The violin is a perfect compliment to this last rocket. It's bittersweet and beautiful, and I do love the fiction that John Hickam Sr. did make it to a launch.

I'm a grown man of 52. Pretty tough (I've always though). I get teary-eyed when I see this, because my Dad was a lot like Homer's dad. He was a former Marine Drill Instructor that died when I was 11 without ever putting his arm around me or telling me he was proud of me or loved me. It still affects me but I have two sons that I tell it to. If I was Homer in this movie, that one gesture would have meant the world to me
Brother, I realize this reply is 8 years late in coming, but my father had a similar background and a similar attitude. I feel you man, and I hope you read this. He wasn't necessarily mean to me, but he never supported anything I did, and took jabs at me whenever he could (not physical, just mental). He passed when I was 15, that was 37 years ago. Stay strong man.

I love this movie so much. It's based on West Virginia, but actually all of it was filmed here in Tennessee not far from where I live. I got to see some of it being filmed. My old town mayor is actually an extra in this movie. My father had a somewhat similar life, because his father was a coal miner. While my father didn't turn out to be some rocket scientist, he did have a better life than what his father did...he is retired Air Force and an engineer. But my father wouldn't be the man he is without the support of his father working in those coal mines. He did what he had to do, was a very tough man. His father in this movie reminds me a lot of my grandpa...working in the mines was rough on him.

This movie hit kinda hard for me. My family on my mother's side is from West Virginia and every little bit of it made me think about how even then there wasn't a lot of excitement and it showed in some scenes. Like where they're talking about how the Science Fair was like going to the Big Apple in a way.

This is easily one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. Just a boy of my age following his ambitions against all odds and winning strong in the end. I love that story line and even though it comes up in many films, this one may have pulled it off the best.

And seeing a kid winning not because of his sports ability, or special musical skill, but because of his curiosity and determination.
This is one of the most inspirational movies. Never give up on your dreams. I love the ending where Homer’s father makes it to their last firing of the rocket. The scene where Homer tells his father that his father is his real hero is so emotional. This is a wonderful movie.
This may be my favorite movie ever. I think the most sentimental part of this video is when the teacher (Mrs. Reiley, I think) saw the rocket in the sky. I'll be honest, I cried at that part. To think of the impact you had on a group of kid's lives, and then have that be one of the last things you see before you die. Truely, a touching masterpiece.
I never saw a trailer for this movie when I first heard about it. I only heard it was about a kid that wants to build rockets and eventually work at NASA. I didn't even know the time period it was set in. So my immediate thought was some kind of modern sci fi movie with a lot of technical jargon. I was pleasantly surprised at what this movie turned out to be. No sc fi. No big special effects. Just a really great story about perseverance. One of my favorites of all time.

I think it's also a story about how important it is to have ambitions or else you end up stagnating, working in a coal mine that eventually runs out of coal and you end up on a dead-end street. It's why I hate how Canada bases all its economy on oil and mining.
Some Saudi prince decides to flood the market with oil and all of a sudden the entire nation is in recession. That is why as citizens and as a nation, we need to strive for something greater in order to survive.

Hi Akshay. I first saw this movie around 16 years ago on HBO. It instantly became a favourite. Whenever I'm feeling low, I watch this movie, it is very very dear to my heart. And I have recommended it to all my friends. :)
The first time Homer's father contributed to his passion for rockets was to give him some likely ruined cement from the mine, a meager provision. He said, "It's yours if you want it."
And here at the end of the story, Homer gives his father the honor of launching their best rocket yet and the one celebrating the science fair victory. And he says, "It's yours if you want it."
The smile on Homer's face, when he offers him the opportunity to push the button, is the expression of his joy that his dad finally came to a launch, coupled with the love and respect for his father which has grown in him over the course of the story.
For me, the significance of this film has never been about Homer succeeding at realizing his dream, but rather the reconciliation and healing of his relationship with his father.
Also, did anybody else know that October Sky is an anagram of Rocket Boys, the book that inspired the film?
In real life, Homers dad was actually more supportive. Homer said that making his dad like this in the movie would make it more entertaining to watch.
One of the best "got something in my eye" scenes ever. Too bad this clip cuts off before the triumphant segue to the thunderous Space Shuttle launch at the very end.
They should have shown part of this then switch over to the shuttle flying transition, that might have been cool

The feeling Homer Hickam showed when his father showed up, was how I felt tonight, when my father made it to our last performance of our play "the servant of two masters". :) no greater feeling to me. I don't blame him for not making the first few, because of work. But that's what makes my father my hero. And it's not when he's there with us, it's because he's there for us. I mean tonight was the night almost teared up after the show and saw my father. I'm also proud to see my friends from when I was younger. We'll all remember, Conroe high school theatre department made history after 87 years of making it to regionals. And though we're not going to state, were proud of how far we've gotten. My father is proud of all of us, and everyone else in our city showed support.:)
The music in this scene... Cry every time.
I lost my father to a 20 year battle with Parkinsons Disease in October of last year. One of the last great memories I have of him was him telling me how proud of me he was. This moment fits that memory perfectly
I've told my kids if I ever get hit by a bus don't waste any time thinking about the things they said or didn't say, or did or didn't do. Just remember I'm proud of them and love them and none of that stuff matters.

Great soundtrack and great movie...a lot a teary-eyed moments...but man does it hit when Miss Riley's scene comes up and there she is bedridden looking out the window at her rocket and how proud she was of them (the heart of Coalwood).
I saw this movie in theaters as a 13-year-old and I was holding back tears during this scene. I remember my dad saying somebody sitting near us got up after the movie ended and wiped his eyes. This is what's missing from today's films - that emotional punch. Today's films are so cynical that they end up making us feel absolutely nothing in the end.

For those that would like to know. The film was made partly in Oliver Springs, TN outside of Knoxville. in the town they still have Olga Coal signs up. and the original screen used launched "Ms Reiley" rocket along with other props from the film. if you travel down the road from the town you can see what was used as Homers House, The tipple of the mine. and the Shop where homers rockets were partly built with the help of his fathers shop workers.
In real life, Homers dad was actually more supportive. He gave homer the math book instead of the teacher Ms. Riley.
No greater feeling for a man than his fathers approval and admiration
One of the best scores in a movie that I’ve seen!! Gives me chills when the violin starts playing as soon as Homer’s dad accepts the offer to shoot off the rocket and the climax of when he puts his arm around him….. damn…
A student of mine, his mother told me he wants to be an astronaut or a scientist for Nasa, and yet he's never heard of the start of it all. I'm going to give him this movie for Christmas, I just hope he feels some inspiration like I did when my dad showed me this years and years ago
As cheesy as this sounds, this is probably one of the most meaningful gifts that is in a form of a film that you can ever give to anybody who hasn't seen it. This scene really hits home, and I fucking love it. I really hope your student was positively moved by this film as I was, further inspiring him to work harder towards achieving his goal of becoming an astronaut. (Also, from a personal stance, I really appreciate teachers like you who continue to inspire young men and woman to becoming the person they want to be!)
Show him the V1 rockets.. that is what really started it all... or you could even go back further when the chinese developed gun powder and built rockets
Kopihucky Shea Lee As a teacher I encourage my students to all follow their dreams no matter how absurd. One of them wants to be a doctor and wants this at 10 years old, another wants to be a vet, two of them want to be martial arts masters, and so on. Seeing their progress and thinking about how far they have to go, it may be a little selfish for saying this, but makes me feel like Miss Riley in a way that's why when I think of my students, I think of her and this wonderful movie.

This is my favorite scene of all time, the cinematography of the people from all over the town watching the rocket shooting up is beautiful.

I’ve been to homer hickams hometown. Some of the mine shops are still there. The shop where they tooled the nozzles is still standing, albeit abandoned. But it was still awesome to see in person.

Once it hit 0:06 and his expression changed as well as the music started playing the tears came like a landslide. As someone that grew up without the presence of my dad and him returning into my life I know the feeling that was conveyed at that moment. Sadly we aren't talking anymore because not only do I live away from him but the things that interest me just aren't accepted by him I hope one day he will learn to accept my interests just seeing this scene again gives me hope.
Sorry for your situation... But, you talk about his need to respect your interests. That's selfish. Don't let your pride get in the way of family. Besides, we are told to honor and respect them. There's deep wisdom and true freedom in that advice.

Times are changing the concept of everything that my parents say is right is in itself a selfish conformity. I love him and respect him but if I got to force myself to tailor my interests on what is acceptable and not acceptable then why should I even call it living it my life if it's not what I want. I turn 25 in 4 days since graduating high school I've served in the army attended college and learned to live independently. I can't say I learned everything there is to know about life but I no without a doubt where my interests lie. This is not a matter of pride it's a matter of respect and acceptance from both party's. Real life situations doesn't end just like this movie right here it can either take years or it will end with one side passing away without their support. That's how I feel though I just felt like rambling for no reason what it ultimately boils down to is both of coming to an understanding.

AMVGFan It reminds me of my father silently showing up in spirit every time something great is happening in my own life. It makes me realize that he still looks out over me even though he isn't within physical form to show his support for me. It brings a tear to my eye every single time the father shows up near the end to remind me what my father would've been like if he saw how much I've grown up these past few years of my life!😢😭
This entire sequence makes me cry every time the music is just perfect and the fact his dad finally showed up and is proud of him is such a sweet moment....

To me this movie has always had a big part of being able to relate to our fathers.
My favorite character in this movie is Miss Riley. She believed in the rocket boys when no one else did. A selfless and sincere teacher can change lives.
1:00 I really enjoyed the little touch that during the entire movie their countdowns are off, right until the final launch. Yes I know they had the button now, but it shows the progression of their building and getting it dialed in right at the final rocket. Awesome movie!

You know what the most touching part of this scene is: earlier in the movie his friend explains to him how to show a girl that you like her when you are shy, it's by slowly putting your arm around her. In this scene his father does the exact same, never being able to tell his son that he likes him, he slowly puts his arm around his shoulder. It made me tear up so much, I love this connection.

This was my father and i's movie as a kid. We watched this and spent a whole summer building rockets when i was 10.
He died a couple years ago, but every time i see a space X launch i remember himt with an arm on my shoulder as we pushed the button.
