- This interview took place in October of 2002.
A young man in a small West Virginia coal town dreams of building rockets to outer space as he witnesses Sputnik flying overhead. A perfect Hollywood opening scene, the story behind the hit film October Sky is all the more remarkable because it is drawn from the real life of former engineer Homer Hickam.
Hickam is interviewed by Ohio University chemical engineering professor Dr. Nicholas Dinos.
1/3 InTouch with Homer Hickam
Mr. Hickham is a very kind man and an inspiration to all of us who do not come from privileged beginnings but who have bigger dreams . . .
He really was I met him in guntersville at our library, he was a a genuine guy, very intelligent. Even took time to to show me how rockets worked. Very basic but it meant a lot to me. Great man

I live in Franklin County, Va
the man the myth the legend
An old Country "Town Hick" BOY who worked extremely hard, didn't care what others thought and became a NASA Engineer! The movie of his beginnings, "October Sky" should be shown to every school kid in America. Reminding them that no matter what, ANYONE can rise above and make a difference in the world! A TRUE inspiration for sure!
BarbellRoy IF they have the resources available.
Sic parvas magna....greatness from small beginnings. His story is a true testament to that.
@@AegisNovahe lived in a declining coal mining town, there wasn’t much for resources. He worked for every single thing he achieved. Granted, he did get support along the way from the townspeople, but that’s because they believed in him and not because they were giving him money
Homer Hickam has been my inspiration since middle school! I'm a college student now and I plan to follow my dreams!

The legend himself

Saw the movie in my freshman year of school, loved it. Then read and re-read the book again and again till graduation in 2012. Just re-read the book and remembered the love I have for this story.
Man, what a beautiful area. All those mountains and trees. I’d never get tired of looking at those.

Just finished watching the movie. It made me cry a few times TBH. 😅 Didn't know it was based on a true story. Love from Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
I don’t know why by this story has always captivated me.
im from and still live in the same area around coalwood wv. its a really small secluded rural place but i love it.
I remember all that, we lived in Caretta.
This Looks Sooo Much Like The Small Cotton Mill Village I Grew Up In..Newry SC,The Town Was Built By Irish That Come Over❤️.
That’s really something for an entire town to be “owned by a company.”
I like this ❤
Homer Hickam is my hero if I ever met him I'd make a Miss Riley rocket replica and give it to him
Homer HIckam...truly one of the men I want to meet. I pray the Lord will give me that chance.
Bin momentan am lesen von den Rocket Boys und extrem begeistert.

Great people! We stay in coalwood when we go there to ride the trails on atv's.
A world which is no more, and cannot again be.
his story is such an inspiration
If october sky doesnt make u cry ur not a human
A company town needs to be illegal because that is low key insane. I am glad the community was tightknit but everyone in that town was taken advantage of by a corporation. And once the coal went out of business, everyone in that town unfortunately suffered
filmed in part of my hometown, Oliver Springs
October sky
Homer is the best
A very smart guy!
Homer u rock
The beginning of this interview bugs me. The values espoused are shared by people everywhere.
HOMER HICKAM!!!!!
Was the USA going to the moon in light of the Soviet Sputnik the motivation?
Sputnik was the very beginning of the “Space Race”, being the first satellite in orbit. The Russians were also able to get the first man into space. We then got the first man in orbit (John Glenn, another WV man). After that it was a race to the moon with the Gemini projects exploring capabilities in space and lastly Apollo sending men to first orbit the men then to land.
@MikkkkyB Fair enough!
Ill be honest..... his voice is not what i expected, i expected a slower, more drawn out voice
Why would you expect his voice to be like that? Just curious.
the true life "Sheldon Cooper"
Haha..Don't think so.Mr.Homer Hickam also have a highly developed right brain alongside his left brain unlike Sheldon Copper.
