    The story line:
1:18 Yingtai dressed as a boy and went to a school in another place, only male allowed to study at that time. She met Shanbo there, and had a crush on him.
5:06 They spent 3 years together, created a lot of beautiful memories. But Shanbo didn’t realized Yingtai is a girl and treated her as a BBF.
7:48 Yingtai received a letter from home and must return, but she didn’t know the reason. Their farewell was a long one, Yingtai(vio) wanted to tell Shanbo(cello) something, but……
10:29 Yingtai arrived at home, her parents said they arranged a marriage for her……
14:07 Shanbo(cello) accidentally found out Yingtai is a girl, he desired to marry her. So they met again. But lovers can not get married easily.
16:31 One day Yingtai heard the death of Shanbo, he died of grief….. She was heartbroken and wept at his grave.
19:35 She jumped off the cliff behind the grave……
20:47 From then on, people always meet two butterflies in the flowers there, they danced in the wind with each other. Someone believes they are Yingtai and Shanbo…..

I stumbled upon this composer and in my humble opinion; this is a romantic piece of classical music. What I mean romantic is not just what the title entails, but also the spirit of Romanticism from the 19th century. If that makes sense.

Almost all Chinese music is romantic. When the west was still in the baroque age, romanticism was already a thing in the east.

@@euomu In fact Song dynasty lyrics 宋词 are already rather impressionistic and atmospheric!

@@SamWuMusicInteresting! I'll definitely check out more classical music from China. There's so much to learn and appreciate, but only one life to experience.

Since this Concerto was written by the two while they were still students at the Conservatory, I've always wondered what other pieces they composed afterwards? Do any of you know any of their other pieces?

very beautiful! It would be correct if the order of the two composers could be corrected, just like it is "He Zhanhao Chen Gang" on the sheet music

Thank you for posting a lot of videos! If you don't mind, Could you post JHAO Jiping's music, too? I'm really big fan of that composer and his composition like 'Violin Concerto No.1', There's no way to find any score.

The place of allegro con brio with A major sounds like Kreisler s Chinese tambourine. So fun.

This is a lovely piece to accompany my Chinese banquet, but it is not going to put the Beethoven or Berg Concertos out of business because there is only so much you can do melodically and harmonically using the pentatonic scale.

@Stephen although I asume you meant to be nice and erudite, maybe you’ll find this essay interesting: th-cam.com/video/Kr3quGh7pJA/w-d-xo.html (btw, huge Beethoven fan here)

I don't desire for either of those pieces to go "out of business," but this piece is probably more well-known than those two within the Sinosphere (not that popularity is the sign of merit anyway).
Indeed the melody and harmony is rather simple, but the result is quite beautiful. I suppose you're right in that you can only do so much with the pentatonic, because the attention of Chinese composers I'm familiar with generally goes towards other elements, particularly the development of timbre.

There's a lot more you can do with it. See Chen Qigang's music.
