Shaham is just Brilliant! He did not just capture the spirit of the composition but the very tragic love story of the butterfly lovers. He triumphs above cultural barrier and embraced human tragedy as a human universal experience.

Gil Shaham has been the top violinists for decades, yet he is such a humble guy without any superstar chips on the shoulder. I am fortunate to have a chance to meet with him backstage before performance, Gil appeared as a regular graduate student, very kind, gentle and genuine... Perhaps it is the ultimate reason why he can touch the very bottom of the soul of this chinese master piece that stunned all. It appears natural and at ease for the pure-hearted one to delivery the finest version of the very very classical chinese work.
All the details across the whole piece, no stone un-turned. He is like purified ballerina unveiling to us with all he has, every movements from finger to the toe, from the start to the very end, full of spirit.
It speaks VOLUMES of the same old saying that music has no boundary. Yun Di Li delivers the Chopin's work with gorgeous touch, and certainly a Jew or anyone else can dig into the roots of the glory of Asian music!
    Bravo, Gil Shaham ㊗㊗㊗💯

jewish is much closer to chinese, cultural and naturally,
he is a deep dive person in all his takes, listening to every piece you will feel he is not doing it for competition or for show off, go deep into basics, so naturally and humbly... he breaks the barrier of Female vs male, western/eastern, White/minorities, he is an internationalist, and you must be if being a good artist, love this low key top artist!

I have listened to this piece over a hundred times... and many times I have shed my tears. One of the best pieces of modern music in China of 20th. century is ever composed, and Gil Shaham has delivered the utmost sense of this love story. While listening, one can imagine a piece of silk cloth full of beautiful colors, subtly blended, flying slowly under the blue sky, graceful, elegant at it's best, and one's emotion flows with it... Enjoy!

hello Diana, looks like you are a die hard fan of Butterfly lovers. My personal favourite is through the chinese bamboo flute, performed by master Chen Hong Yan (陈鸿燕) from Hong Kong. i heard his version when i was a kid and love it ever since.
His latest version found in the youtube is not in his best form as he has aged, His old album can still be found in some chinese website, listening stations.
The very sound of the flute when the music went off is enough to set off goosebumps as the vibration sound of the flute is delicate and sad. The tune than changed iinto a fast and melidious one,,Try it.
      Best regards

Absolutely a blessing to have Master Gil Shaham be in love with chinese music, it is obvious he is deeply into this piece and cultural traits. World class and Jewish American, we are looking at the origin of the products: world class artists. Looking Forward, more to come, best way to show the glory and depth of rich culture of China. Appreciate Gil's master work.

This version is absolutely the best I've ever heard, even better than those of many Chinese violinists. Shaham never overdid any note, but the emotion was subtly expressed. None of those glissandos was stiffly played.

I took note of Gil Shaham ever since I heard his performance in Beethoven's triple concerto (on TH-cam). His bow strokes are clean, and his tone is velvet and he is very expressive w/o going overboard. Unbelievable playing here too. That is because he is an Israeli, an Easterner too, not a Westerner.

That is so true, not only a none chinese, none asian, but it is a MALE!!!
and Jewish culturally has such a deep and close connection and similarities in many aspects...
It appears he spent most of his time in the States and "west",
Either way, this is such a stunning and positive thing for fine arts. Boundary broke down.
How many times you hear people say that it must be a chinese, and it it best to be a female to deliver, and she must be deep in understanding chinese Yue Opera(originated from) or Peking Opera...

It's a matter of personal preference. The version by Gil Shaham is 'quieter' and has a soothing feeling. However, my personal preference is still Akiko Suwani's performance. To see her facial expression and cradelling of the violin as she plays the piece is very exhilarating. And she is so beautiful too !!

    • @fooksengloke3625
      @fooksengloke3625 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

tony chew Suwanai's version certainly is a very intense performance especially from the magnificent Dolphino, once owned by Jascha Heifetz. As a performance by itself, it is extremely satisfying. But for a programmed piece, the intensity of the playing should vary more in accordance to the programme.
Lu Siqing's performance with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, perhaps, strikes the best balance in the range of emotion for this piece. Towards the end, he even cried while he played. I also find Gil Shaham's version somewhat subdued, a lot like the older performances, Yu Lina, for example. He also played the violin more in the normal way and not in the imitation of the erhu. Takako Nishizaki probably has the most recorded performances but I do not find anything outstanding in her playing.

Interesting note: This was Chen's favorite rendition. Perhaps he intended it to be more subdued when he composed it; which isn't to say that it's the best way to play it.

I first heard the end of this piece on the radio a few weeks back. I thought it was real neat and decided to look it up on here. I've heard it several times now; I think it's lots of fun, and to me I can hear a mix of Asian and Western themes (And by Western, I mean western hemisphere, not Wild West, LOL ).

The little section with castanets or whatever that is tapping at 19:20 actually sounds "wild west western" to me, reminds me of Aaron Copland's Hoedown.

at least it is wonderful to have a Jewish and international well established, humble GUY, I say it, because it does come the difference sometimes, when female touches differently into the role and music than male, but here it is quite obvious that he brings out more and his take is quite deeper...

maybe that is the beauty and difference of this comparing to others, Mr. Gil Shaham, Jewish, not sure of his religious belief, have to guess that there is always hope if believing the eternal life, especially better life after this one, it is sad but shall not be perlonged sorrow. The joy of meeting loved one in past life will ultimately overcome the sadness of losing tempurarily. Same with funeral, in the US, the funeral is done around regular neighborhood, not in far isolated cold dark burning places... people say goodbay, tell jokes, share stories of the passed person who is right nearby, and buried maybe 10 minutes away, among living, everywhere...
