I’m now 4 months into medical ketogenic therapy for my rapid cycling bipolar 1 with mixed episodes. I used to have 4-5 episodes a year which was really debilitating and now as my psychotherapist says I am thriving. My antipsychotic medication has been reduced from 400mg to 150mg (and my psychiatrist told me if all is well in two weeks I will go down to 100mg). I’m getting projects finished, something I could never do before. I have lost 11kg, my training is now regular and I am now a healthy body weight. Your research along with doctor Palmer’s kept me motivated in the early days of my transformation as did Hannah and Lauren Kennedy’s stories. I also have to say pre-keto I was extremely skeptical, even as far as feeling offended that this would work and even the concept that something so simple as food could balance me out. If you are reading this and are feeling in such a way I would encourage you to read more and trust the process, of course under the supervision of your doctor.
This podcast interview is fabulous! So honest and helpful, covering topics that are so useful for me. I think you guys are making a really positive difference. Thank you so much 🙂
I wasn't going to watch this because I've heard Hannah's story before but I'm glad I did - there were lots of new insights I gained and wonderful questions and answers that were shared. As always, you guys are inspiring and transparent. A lot is relatable like the experiences in psych wards and being paranoid while on keto about sleep/relapse. It's fascinating about fasting - I do intermittent fasting b/c I don't like eating breakfast. Thank you for another time-worthy interview and looking forward to what you do next. I've been on keto since December 2023, and while there were slight positive gains starting after 2-3 months, there were still overall negative symptoms I was experiencing and I started to taper my medicine olanzapine before I actually felt better and just learned a couple days ago that olanzapine leaves the brain quicker on keto so my keto coach and I definitely think withdrawal has been at play in how I've been feeling b/c I've been told I'm tapering quicker than I think. But there are other variables and it's frustrating you can still have side effects of a medication while you taper off of it. Starting about 7 months into keto, I noticed stronger improvements and now 8 months in, finally clicking with what people say when they admit that they feel like their old selves and I just believe it can even get better as I continue to taper. So, I definitely think you should stick with keto for maybe up to a year to notice the best benefits.
Have you guys heard of no carb life, a TH-cam channel with Dave mack? He uses his platform to tell the perfect personal stories people who are following a carnivore diet or a low-carb diet. Many of his guests also recover from mental health challenges as a result of the ketones . It is so powerful hearing personal stories. And I'm glad you guys are doing something similar for keto and bipolar. I'm sure many of the guest he's had could also go on your show. Some of them had pretty serious mental illnesses that they've recovered from. Thanks for providing hope for all the bipolar patients out there
Thank you for sharing Hannah, trying to find help on keto while taking medications which raise my blood sugars what can I do? Does anyone know. I’ve reversed diabetes but unsure how to proceed and concerned my doctor will want me to stop keto as I may have damage to my kidneys with medications, protein and meat. 😢 love how I feel on keto, so much energy, feel like I have changed gear and in the fast lane!
6 month on keto with medication. Have hard conctipations caused by medication. Can't fix metabolic bcz of conctipations (medication). I guess medication blocks enzymes in my body.
Interesting you bring this up when my son has gone manic he looses his appetite I have also thought of this Maybe the body’s way of trying to heal itself So didckhead dad brings in lollies and sweets to make my son feel better 🙄🙄🙄😂
Fantastic thank you. I’m researching and learning about metabolic treatments for a family member.

Hannah's story is absolutely wonderous. Wishing you both the best
I loved hearing this conversation between Hannah, Iain, and Matt! It’s so inspiring to hear them share their insights on mental health!
