  • US House lawmakers have passed a landmark bill effectively banning the popular social media platform, TikTok unless it seperates itself from its Chinese parent company Bytedance. The bill gives TikTok one year to sell its stake to a US-based entity. Lawmakers in both parties raised national security and data privacy concerns. It will now go to vote in the Senate, where its expected to pass.

Seems fair since the PRC has also banned American social medias for a long time.

Just delete the app. It's a waste of time and battery anyways.

Why was Mercedes, Valve, ARM, Supercell forced to sell equity to China. China also ordered HP to give them radar technology for allowing ink printers to be sold in China in 90s.

China doesn't allow forreign games and apps without selling equity to tencent and netease. Supercell, Riot, Epic Unreal, Reddit were forced to sell 50 percent equity to Tencent.

So, it’s basically “sell it to us” or “it’s getting banned.” Isn’t that blackmail?

China doesn't have press freedom and never claim so. But the US and EU do claim they have press freedom. It is basic logic that anyone, including China, will be concerned about the Western press freedom. No media in the West will show the Palestinien side of stories after TikTok is banned in the US.

The fact that TikTok is blocked in China sez it all.

TikTok has become too large to be brought down by the recent US ban, similar to the previous Indian ban. It will likely survive the ban and continue to operate.
