I don't think the TLX will have any major problems either. Definitely not in 5 years. It's a Honda, plus both the engine and transmission are very robust with forged internals which can support large aftermarket hp gains, and also wear less over time. NA might be the safer choice though, since this 3L V6T is a brand new engine, so no one knows yet.
Thanks Kirk for this wonderful video! I recently saw an ad for the Lexus Golden Opportunities Sales Event and it showed the IS 500 in Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0 and it said coming soon next to it!! Gets me even more excited for its arrival!
@TheBreakfastLover he is doing more then just comparing the price. Just accept that the IS500 is more appealing then the Type S. You want to bring up price. Acura dealers are doing a markup of 10K right now. Local dealers have gone crazy. So go ahead and say the Type S is 63k at this point.
That's because acura is the cheaper brand they couldn't price it more than they did or nobody would buy it. It for sure competes with the is500. Because the is500 competes with the same car it does. M340i c43 s4 audi
Is500! For sure! The reliability with that amount of power and the amount of tuning options that would/should be available definitely makes it worth more than the type s. Even if the Lexus is 65k+ I'd still get it, because you know it's gonna last you a life time!
Very impressive comparison and a very nice job you've done Kirk. I would go for the Lexus, yes definitely IS 500 simply cause LEXUS is by fare the best in term of comfort and longevity.
For the same price, Type S is way better than IS 350. I agree IS 500 is better than Type S performance wise but you'll have to pay at least $10K more for that brilliant NA V8. Is that V8 worth $10K? A tough question.
that 10k extra investment now can have the potential to get you 100k after you use the car for 20 years, when the roads are full of 4 cyl or less turbos and high tech refrigerators on wheels.
Both are great options. The IS looks amazing and will be dead reliable for sure, but I wish Lexus would’ve tried harder and changed/added more features. It’s missing lots of luxury features for its price.
Depending on region SH-AWD may be the difference for some people. As I live in the Midwest, the SH-AWD would probably make me select the Type S over the IS500 SP
I just bought the Type S and even if the IS 500 is $6000 more I'm still buying the Acura. Dump the $6000 into tuning the Type S and its over, JS. I drove the IS 350 and it was nice but the interior of the Acura just looked so much more advanced.
You get what you pay for. Was behind a new tlx tonight. Brake lights are hideous. Reminds me of disgusting chevy tails on which car I’m not sure. The car just looks awkward to me. It’s very wide and lean looking. Mehhhhh. Plus we all know the build quality and material quality of the Lexus is next level to the Acura.
@@fatboynip i understand that you don’t like the taillights but the reference to chevy makes no sense. chevy doesn’t have any car that is remotely similar to the taillights of the TLX. and the build quality and material quality is definitely on par or even better than lexus. you definitely haven’t been in enough lexus’s and acura’s. the old days of acura are over. they’re MUCH better now
This is a really good on-paper comparison. I think the Lexus IS500 is a slightly better car (Lexus reliability + a proven V8) but I would be happy with the TLX Type S.
Good comparison. I would had mentioned how the twin turbo makes the engine work a bit harder, so long term reliability might not be there as good as the IS
The turbos have gotten better over the years. Lexus will probably move the turbo route after this IS500 drop. The key is to having catch cans in these cars now
First of all, I would take either TLX Type S, or Lexus IS500 against the Korean and European competition. If, I have to choose for pure driving satisfaction, I would take the TLX Type S. Forget the performance numbers, forget the specs, when I sat in the TLX Type S. it felt like it is an extension of my body. There is no other car that gave me that feeling, including the IS500. Having said that, Type S is not a slouch on performance either. It outhandles pretty much competition pound per pound easily. After all, Honda is more of performance focused brand than the Toyota. When it comes to Acura performance comes with a certain level of luxury as well.
Good video, but you called it on pricing. I’m cross shopping both of them right now and the Lexus is $70k at minimum. The Type S can be bought @$56 and much more readily.
According to my budget, I have since 2nd of July, the IS 350 AWD F3 (handling pack). In Canada, but I also saw videos from states, I do have 3 memory settings for seats and mirrors and I also paired the first 2 with my 2 remotes. After I spent weeks and weeks on forums, I finally decided and tested for myself around 15 cars from various brands. I bought the IS because it was the best car in the same budget for us. Yes, TH-cam will give you some ideas, but the reality and the tests will give you the real answer and you'll make the real choice. Do that when the time will come to buy
It’s possible. But I say max will be maybe 450. The car is just so heavy. 500 is not out of realm but we are probably 3-5 years out to see the tune potential
Previous TLX had transmission problems and now it's a completely new model. So i'll assume IS is notably more reliable. That being said i hear the TLX is very planted and inspires confidence in corners. I also like the exterior and interior more.
Awesome review again Kirk! As a 2013 4th gen TL current owner....I love any V8 and red over V6 and even the SHAWD... But for daily driver and winter driving in Canada...have to take the type S...
V8 for life! It’s like a sleeper comparing to potential you can get tuning it yourself) also, what’s the other brands can offer you with V8 and what would be the price? (that’s what’s missed in this video) And in terms of reliability of turbo ICE (my opinion) - it’s just rape of the engine resource
- As nice as the Acura is, I'm goin with the IS 500. Rock solid drive train, I feel like I could probably own one for the remainder of my life and not have any serious problems. NA old school V8 & RWD. Definitely not gonna see much of this in the future. Enjoy it while it's here.
RE: Exhaust - I do not see how you can give these a tie at six on exhaust sound. In your own words you say the Acura "only sounds good when shifting; otherwise the Lexus V8 sounds better in every single way." 13:55 I get that the IS500 exhaust is underwhelming, but I do not get how you could give these both a tie at six given that the V8 sounds better in every other way besides shifting. I personally do not even like clapping noises when shifting. Plus, as you mentioned, you can improve the V8 sound drastically. It could be as simple as changing the mufflers out for a few hundred $$. The rest of your ratings are solid and I am super stoked about both of these vehicles. But I truly think the Lexus has the edge on exhaust sound, and therefore the overall points winner. Cannot wait to hear pricing, but I would pick the IS500 without question unless they just go nuts with the price. Also, I wish there was an AWD option for the IS500.
I'd stick to the IS (even the 350 FSp if not the 500) due to its tradition, also just enough updated tech without going over. Older powertrain and other hardware are no problem as long as they're time-tested to be reliable. But the TLX? Oh well......
If you ever owned a V-8 or love V-8 engines there’s no comparison if you have even driven the older first generation ISS you know what the experience is like there is no comparison from the Acura.
The styling on the TLX to me just says "I'm front wheel drive". The IS is and looks like a RWD sports sedan. In terms of value you aren't going to see more N/A V8's in the future vs. smaller displacement engines with turbo's trying to mimic V power. For that reason and just the visceral sound and enjoyment of the V8 I think the IS takes that category. The rest I'd say is fair judgement.
Not sure this comparison even makes sense. The TLX Type-S starts at $59k in Canada, while the Lexus is rumored to start at $78k. The Acura is like the first tier AMG package (like a 43 AMG) while the Lexus is more like a C63 AMG competitor but the performance lags a little. Maybe a Dodge Charger Scat Pack is more in line with the Lexus performance wise.
I’m predicting the IS500 to be in the upper $50k area because all it really is at the end of the day is a IS350 FS with a V8 dropped into it with a **barely** noticeable body kit + exhaust. All that stuff can’t be more than $4 to 7k in mods when compared to the price of a base IS 350 FS.
I would say at least for me the TLX looks better from every angle, specially front and back, is very very aggressive and futuristic, it almost looks like a concept, I like the 10 speed better over the 8 speed in the Lexus, I like the interior on the TLX better, it’s also a bigger car so more space, it has AWD and it’s one of the best AWD and I live in Canadá so I would prefer to have it but I wouldn’t mind the RWD in the IS500, engine wise, stock to stock the TLX sounds really good, the exhaust actually sounds better than I expected but damn the N/A V8 in the IS500 sounds really nice, but I actually think I’m a person that prefers a turbocharged V6 over N/A, the overall engine not just the sound, and the TLX is probably faster, both are really good cars anyway, I prefer the TLX but I think the IS500 could make me very happy too 😬
I prefer the N/A V8, the stacked quad-exhaust, the aggressive hood, the slightly better media technology, and the extra passenger leg space in the IS 500. I prefer the SH-AWD system, the headlight design and the backlight design in the Type S. That’s pretty much it for the Type S. I’m not a fan of either automatic transmissions in both cars. A manual option should’ve been offered in the IS 500 considering it has a N/A V8 with RWD.
Usually lexus V8 F cars sell for 71k and up here in Jersey when new off the showroom floor...Im thinking the IS500 will be no less then 68k ...Fully loaded they can touch the mid 70s very easy.If you can get this car for under 68 new thats in my opinion a great price
Type-S interior with lexus motor & and exterior. Crazy how the rivalry we have been waiting for over a decade from the manufactures decides to release these cars as companies shifts towards electrification.
As someone else mentioned, that V8 is enough for me. Also, since you asked which one is is the best sport sedan with a Japanese soul, I'd say it's the one built in Japan, not Ohio. That is the true JDM super star! 😎😎
I love that v8 in the Lexus so probably would get the Lexus , I fell love with the isf back in 2008 with that 5.0 I wanted one so bad but price was about $56k back then a little out of reach for me at that time.
ISF vs Type-S ISF is for the old school that still appreciate a modest modern twist = Reliability, V8 (Last one), and doesn't care about all the fancy options High Tech Type-S is for the consumer that wants to be a little different and are Honda boys (Grown up), and wants High Tech features If the ISF comes at future EST = $58k, the Type-S is going to be in tough place. To me the Type-S competition is the Genesis G70 but I will still choose the Type-S ISF 1st Choice
I love the looks of the latest refresh of the IS, and the IS 500 F Sport is the best possible in that line...not to mention it's wonderful sounding naturally aspirated V8 is the last of its kind in a 4 door sedan. The TLX may be the better overall car simply because it's design is much newer, but I'd choose the IS 500 every day, twice on Sundays. Whatever shortcomings it may have vs the TLX when it comes to tech inside, chassis tuning etc...all disappears and become non-factors on a crisp clear Sunday morning with the moonroof open so you can hear more of that smooth V8 music while you're carving up your favorite backroad👌😎
The IS500 is going to price out above MSRP simply because of it's limited production. That said, although the 340i M is a bit faster than the Lexus, I'd still pick the IS500. When are you ever going to see another NA V8 in a sports compact luxury sedan again? This will end up being a collectable car in the not to distant future.
I like the Lexus IS500 but it won’t stand a chance against the TLX Type S interior i mean miles better interior in the Type S with ambience light etc, i think Type S with some mods tune downpipe intake high flow exhaust it blow the IS500
And then someone can tune the IS500 and Type S won’t touch it. First we got to see how far that engine can be pushed. I don’t expect any of us to know till 3-5 years
You know I am all in with Lexus . Aside from this huge addition on the engine to the IS. They really put little effort into the so called refresh . Whereas Acura went all out . Disappointing this time around for Lexus.
The IS 500 will probably cost close to 65k to start. Even though it can't put it's power down as effectively as the Type-S for standstill acceleration, it'll still be dynamically superior. But there are lesser priced albeit less powerful 'competitors' (G70, S4, M340i, C53 AMG) that perform just as well so it's getting more difficult to justify the extra price without the extra performance to match. In fact, the 480hp entry level M3 (though pricier) will shame the IS. The IS 500, just like the GS-F (that was supposed to be an F-sport performance) is in an awkward in-between.
I should have mentioned:
- at $52-$55k, Type S costs the SAME as IS 350 F Sport w/ DHP...easy choice to go Type S in that situation.
I wonder, is it possible that the lexus is f revive, or the is500 is the spiritual successor?

If you plan to keep your car after 5 years.
Definitely the IS500.
5 years is nothing for an Acura.
When it comes to luxury coupes and sedans, Lexus always had the more appealing cars than Acura.
Thanks Kirk for this wonderful video! I recently saw an ad for the Lexus Golden Opportunities Sales Event and it showed the IS 500 in Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0 and it said coming soon next to it!! Gets me even more excited for its arrival!
NA V8. Just gotta trust that lexus ol’reliable engine
As a owner of a turbo car with the years u run into problems with turbos and stuff IMO all motor is the way to go
Pricewise the Type S competes with the IS350 AWD F-sport package 3, not the IS500.
Even the is350 fsport cost more than the type S it’s just nuts max out the IS cost 2k more than a max out typeS
@@B1ackAlloy1992 wrong, the two local Acura dealers sold out their Type S's for MSRP, no markups
@@TheBreakfastLover @TheBreakfastLover wrong, they most likely were preorders. Unless you know where I live. My local dealers are 10k up.
That's because acura is the cheaper brand they couldn't price it more than they did or nobody would buy it. It for sure competes with the is500. Because the is500 competes with the same car it does. M340i c43 s4 audi
No replacement for displacement 😀
V8 cars are immediate collectors items. Lexus rules!
Is500! For sure! The reliability with that amount of power and the amount of tuning options that would/should be available definitely makes it worth more than the type s. Even if the Lexus is 65k+ I'd still get it, because you know it's gonna last you a life time!
thank you for the detailed spreadsheet mate. great video!
Lexus is just the king!😥💪😎
Very impressive comparison and a very nice job you've done Kirk.
I would go for the Lexus, yes definitely IS 500 simply cause LEXUS is by fare the best in term of comfort and longevity.
For the same price, Type S is way better than IS 350. I agree IS 500 is better than Type S performance wise but you'll have to pay at least $10K more for that brilliant NA V8. Is that V8 worth $10K? A tough question.
I don’t really think so but if it is less than 10k I think it is
that 10k extra investment now can have the potential to get you 100k after you use the car for 20 years, when the roads are full of 4 cyl or less turbos and high tech refrigerators on wheels.
No. I’d add an intake+exhaust to the type S. Save money and have a great, more stylish car.
Well you're also paying for TOYOTA Reliability + Longevity also.
Both are great options. The IS looks amazing and will be dead reliable for sure, but I wish Lexus would’ve tried harder and changed/added more features. It’s missing lots of luxury features for its price.
This IS is just a facelift, its not a fully redesigned car, so I probably sure the interior will get better when it gets redesigned soon
that lexus is going to be a collector. the industry is sadly moving away from big block engines
Depending on region SH-AWD may be the difference for some people. As I live in the Midwest, the SH-AWD would probably make me select the Type S over the IS500 SP
Absolutely!
That's what I decided. Looking forward to putting some blizzaks on and ripping. That lexus wouldn't be usable at 4 am in February for me.
I just bought the Type S and even if the IS 500 is $6000 more I'm still buying the Acura. Dump the $6000 into tuning the Type S and its over, JS. I drove the IS 350 and it was nice but the interior of the Acura just looked so much more advanced.
Congratulations on your Type S!
Thank you 👏 👏
German car owners don’t understand these cars can easily be upgraded even without tuning.
Is500 for better sound and driving dynamics
Tlx for cheaper price tag
You get what you pay for. Was behind a new tlx tonight. Brake lights are hideous. Reminds me of disgusting chevy tails on which car I’m not sure. The car just looks awkward to me. It’s very wide and lean looking. Mehhhhh. Plus we all know the build quality and material quality of the Lexus is next level to the Acura.
@@fatboynip you're kidding right? Acura>>>lexus. Fucking fanboi
@@AnonymousDawg016 YOURE kidding, right??? Okay I’ve had plenty of both, kid.
@@fatboynip okay kid
@@fatboynip i understand that you don’t like the taillights but the reference to chevy makes no sense. chevy doesn’t have any car that is remotely similar to the taillights of the TLX. and the build quality and material quality is definitely on par or even better than lexus. you definitely haven’t been in enough lexus’s and acura’s. the old days of acura are over. they’re MUCH better now
This is a really good on-paper comparison. I think the Lexus IS500 is a slightly better car (Lexus reliability + a proven V8) but I would be happy with the TLX Type S.
Why won't honda make a v8!? such a shame since The tlx is my go to
Good comparison. I would had mentioned how the twin turbo makes the engine work a bit harder, so long term reliability might not be there as good as the IS
The turbos have gotten better over the years. Lexus will probably move the turbo route after this IS500 drop. The key is to having catch cans in these cars now
*single turbo
It’s a twin scroll. Meaning one turbo, dual induction spinners.
@@B1ackAlloy1992 there is no proof to support this. How do you know they've gotten better? where are the turbo'd vehicles with 300k miles?
@@chucksneed7230 Lol
Absolute, lex head... I remain loyal to Toyota/Lexus....IS 500 is just the beginning of F sport! Who doesn't want to Experience Amazing? Seriously!!!
Good video, but you called it on pricing. I’m cross shopping both of them right now and the Lexus is $70k at minimum. The Type S can be bought @$56 and much more readily.
You should update this when you get your hands on a Lexus IS 500 F-Sport.
I can speak for Europe: IS 500 wins this round.
This video is what happens when content creators listen to us! *crying* Thank you Kirk!!!! You're the best!!!!
Happy you enjoyed it man!
the is500 might be more expensive but dont forget that it will barely depreciate
You know damn well that we are the Lexurious fleet and will pick the IS before any other model 😉
Agreed 💯💯💯💯
Lexus: engine
Acura: design
N/A V8, 4 doors, Toyota reliability. RWD.
VS a FWD based 4200lb accord that can't even hang with the competition.
I think we know the answer.
IS500 looks mean af. Especially the launch edition.
I’m not joking I saw an is500 driving around here in Austin Tx . Yes the new redesigned newly named is500 it was that grey incognito color .
riiii was Elvis driving it too?
Where because i live in ATX and never seen it. Wait i did see it last night, Stevie Wonder was on 35 doing 130mph in it.
Tls has forged internals, fan boys gonna be tuning the shit out of it. I see 500whp in the near future on stock everything
It’s possible. But I say max will be maybe 450. The car is just so heavy. 500 is not out of realm but we are probably 3-5 years out to see the tune potential
Yup just imagine what people are doing with a k series with a snail. It's guna be good
Should have been ready out of factory
Gotta void warranty just to compete with everything else that is stock
@@B1ackAlloy1992 ppl getting 500 out of the accord 2.0 without forged internals
@@Striker50_ it would cost too much money then
I would take the IS over the TLX without a second thought.
Hi Kirk, what’s better in your opinion now the TLX Type S PMC or IS500? Thanks for your awesome vids and analysis!
Previous TLX had transmission problems and now it's a completely new model. So i'll assume IS is notably more reliable. That being said i hear the TLX is very planted and inspires confidence in corners. I also like the exterior and interior more.
The big MDX had problems. Not the TLX.
(that’s what’s missed in this video)
And in terms of reliability of turbo ICE (my opinion) - it’s just rape of the engine resource
Lexus should give us an ISF already!
That happened about a decade ago
4221 lbs TLX Type S vs 3891 lbs IS500 F, I love both but I’ll go with the lighter car with more HP Lexus IS
I'd give the styling to the Type S but the IS NA V8 with the proper after-market exhaust is gonna sound like a symphony.
I'd stick to the IS (even the 350 FSp if not the 500) due to its tradition, also just enough updated tech without going over. Older powertrain and other hardware are no problem as long as they're time-tested to be reliable. But the TLX? Oh well......
I have a 350 and its trash. Not enough performance for the way it looks. TLX Type S over that without a question. IS500 over all of these tho.
@@thynysan lol IS isnt trash
@@tubedude92 Its reliable and built good. In terms of performance, the normal IS's are trash.
@Tony Camaj I agree. I just hope the awd system and transmission can hold up to that extra power when people do any kind of power upgrade.
Heated rear seats are available on the TLX a spec; but not available at all on the type S. Sometimes the Japanese really are inscrutable
If you ever owned a V-8 or love V-8 engines there’s no comparison if you have even driven the older first generation ISS you know what the experience is like there is no comparison from the Acura.
This Battle of Honda Accord Vs Toyota Camry
The styling on the TLX to me just says "I'm front wheel drive". The IS is and looks like a RWD sports sedan. In terms of value you aren't going to see more N/A V8's in the future vs. smaller displacement engines with turbo's trying to mimic V power. For that reason and just the visceral sound and enjoyment of the V8 I think the IS takes that category. The rest I'd say is fair judgement.
If Acura ever made a V8 car, I’d lose my mind.
Lexus of course.
If I can get my IS 500 in caviar black with the circuit red interior I'ma be sold ❤️
Ya its will probably be similar to the Scat Pack in weight (heavy) and hp. However the Acura is no way comparable to the C43 AMG in speed.
As an ISF owner, I'm obviously biased toward IS500 as I'm sort of considering trading in for it. But that TLX looking awesome vehicle nonethelss
It won't matter that the tech was out of date in the IS500 10 years from now when it's a future classic
I would say at least for me the TLX looks better from every angle, specially front and back, is very very aggressive and futuristic, it almost looks like a concept, I like the 10 speed better over the 8 speed in the Lexus, I like the interior on the TLX better, it’s also a bigger car so more space, it has AWD and it’s one of the best AWD and I live in Canadá so I would prefer to have it but I wouldn’t mind the RWD in the IS500, engine wise, stock to stock the TLX sounds really good, the exhaust actually sounds better than I expected but damn the N/A V8 in the IS500 sounds really nice, but I actually think I’m a person that prefers a turbocharged V6 over N/A, the overall engine not just the sound, and the TLX is probably faster, both are really good cars anyway, I prefer the TLX but I think the IS500 could make me very happy too 😬
The Lexus of course. Last of a dying breed.
The IS 300 F Sport costs almost as much as the TLX Type S once you spec it out similarly, there is no way that the IS 500 is going to cost only $60k
Yeah the IS500 is going to be like $65k+
Usually lexus V8 F cars sell for 71k and up here in Jersey when new off the showroom floor...Im thinking the IS500 will be no less then 68k ...Fully loaded they can touch the mid 70s very easy.If you can get this car for under 68 new thats in my opinion a great price
great video Kirk really appreciate your effort into these videos
Phantom Violet is not available for the Type-s. It’s only Majestic Black Pearl.
You're totally right!!! Darn...purple with orchid would be a nice combo
Type-S interior with lexus motor & and exterior.
Crazy how the rivalry we have been waiting for over a decade from the manufactures decides to release these cars as companies shifts towards electrification.
I understand the video now, you have a huge Lexus following in the comments!!!! Thanks for sharing your opinion!!
As someone else mentioned, that V8 is enough for me. Also, since you asked which one is is the best sport sedan with a Japanese soul, I'd say it's the one built in Japan, not Ohio. That is the true JDM super star! 😎😎
True, but the V6 was designed in Japan iirc :) But yes, the Lexus is very Japanese in comparison haha
My personal preference would be the Lex but my wallets preference would be the Acura 🤣🤣
I love that v8 in the Lexus so probably would get the Lexus , I fell love with the isf back in 2008 with that 5.0 I wanted one so bad but price was about $56k back then a little out of reach for me at that time.
ISF vs Type-S
ISF is for the old school that still appreciate a modest modern twist = Reliability, V8 (Last one), and doesn't care about all the fancy options High Tech
Type-S is for the consumer that wants to be a little different and are Honda boys (Grown up), and wants High Tech features
If the ISF comes at future EST = $58k, the Type-S is going to be in tough place.
To me the Type-S competition is the Genesis G70 but I will still choose the Type-S
ISF 1st Choice
If only Lexus would update their interior! No touch screen in the Acura and small back seat is a no for me.
Don't care if you can tune the type s to have more power, v8s are beautiful musical instruments and will always feel better behind the wheel.
The Tlx tech is far superior but that Lexus IS just stunning I’d take it over just about anything these days
I don’t expect any of us to know till 3-5 years
The TLX will be less reliable than the IS500, so 80 for TLX and 87 for the IS500! #reliabilitysurcharge
Both of these vehicles are much better 💯 then that Genesis G70 👎🏻
Acura for the win. Though the V8 in the Lexus IS amazing, Honda makes an amazing engine.
It's for those who want a old school V8 instead of the forced induction engines. I am trading my C43 for one of these beasts.
