Would you say these ride smooth stock? I sold my 8th gen si because it was too low and the ride was horrible. These have the same suspension as an Accord so I imagine so.
I regret not buying the one I test drove back in '04, just because it had some road rash on the hood. Now it seems impossible to find a manual that hasn't been riced and/or thrashed to death.

@@crate2819 I had a FX35, it felt quick for a crossover. Then saved a riced out prelude as a daily. Had the same oil burning condition. Drove it till it finally spun a bearing. It now has a bluetop jdm H23A, and let me tell ya, it is a lot more fun now. That extra torque makes it such a fun car to drive. Up hills in 5th gear barely giving it gas, no sweat. Definitely keeping it for life.
No matter what car I have I will always keep an early 2000s honda as my dd. Their just so small, light and fun to drive and best of all that lovable door chime.
To this day after owning the SE for 21 years it still gets a lot of praise from on-lookers young and old. My baby has an enduring quality that drives like a race horse. Too much fun for such a long time makes it hard to say goodbye. So i dont say it and keep it running fast and strong.! :)
I had one just like this in silver with black cloth interior. I noticed right away that this car doesn't have the stock shift knob. I was happy to see that the owner kept the stock Honda SH specific wheels. I have very fond memories of my old 2001 Prelude SH. The first week I bought it, I took it to the mountains taking curves in it. When new, the gear box is quite tight, and smooth like a bolt -action rifle. Even after I reached 170K on the odometer, the gear box in my car retained it's tight feel. Cars that have been abused, and or shifted poorly tend to lose that feel in the gear box. This car with a good set of sticky tires will pull a G off of the line. In stock form they are a brilliant daily driver for a single person without a family of their own. When properly professionally modified, they will provide astounding power for the engine size. In stock form, the handling is as good as any Porsche that isn't equipped with all wheel drive. They are quite solid, and composed at higher speeds like many of the German sports cars. .
For those wondering about the Type SH designation, it means Super Handling and it refers to the Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS) which was an early torque vectoring system. Torque vectoring by power not by braking like modern exotic cars. When cornering torque is taken away from the inner front wheel and added to the outer front wheel pushing the front end towards the apex and reducing understeer. Only top spec Prelude Type SH have ATTS. Type SH is not a Type R which is a more raw focused machine.
Been watching your videos since the Brz days that's actually how I found your channel and your video quality has gotten so much better and the animations are awesome, keep up the good work !!!
Watching this brought back all the memories I had with my amazing Prelude. I love this car, and you did such a great job reviewing it. I graduated to a S2000 5 years back, but I still have moments when I wish i was driving my old Lude. I would go far as saying that it was my favourite car that i've ever owned. Not as fast as my S2k, but it was such a fun car to drive. Smiles ear to ear!! Was so confidence inspiring, coupled with that amazing H22’s sound. Well done, now i want to buy another one haha. Cheers!
My wife's first new car in college was her 98 Prelude 5spd in Glacier Ice Blue with black interior. We used to love speed shifting and if you kept it between 5500 and 7200 rpms the VTech was ALIVE with power, almost the feel of secondaries opening on my 66 Barracuda. Her Prelude could closely hang with my 92 Stang...very impressive for a stock Honda 4 banger! It also handled just like a go-cart which was so much fun to carve corners on a 2 lane windy road. We kept it stock and pristine with the only cosmetic change being Testarossa shadow vent graphics to give it character. After our first child was born in Dec 05, I bought my wife for her bday in Jan 06 a 2006 Pilot EXL which she still drives. I drove her Prelude til 08 when we sold it, and it still looked new and drove strong, but was not practical to fit a car seat into the rear. 4 cars later for me and my daily driver is a 2018 Accord 2.0T, and let me say, Honda finally knocked it out of the park with this one!
Am I tripping or do you guys hear a baby crying at 3:58 when he talks about how the backseat is really only for kids? Listen really closely and try to tune out his voice, I've watched it 3 times and heard the same thing every time!
A peach of a car. Had a new one in 1998 and I still remember it as one of the best and most fun cars I ever owned. Great engine, brilliant chassis. They were very under rated.
Glad to see that you're having fun (: I myself have one of these as well, a 2000 Type SH. You should've mentioned what it is that makes the SH different from the base models and that's the Active Torque Transferring System (ATTS). The torque vectoring in this vehicle was an engineering marvel back in its day. It handles a lot more better in corners than the base model Preludes. Still, great video 👍👌 I'm glad people such as myself are still enjoying these vehicles and that they're getting the attention they deserve
Yeah the Prelude was always kind of a test-bed for new technologies Honda was developing (maybe that's why they called it the Prelude?). ATTS was the beginning of SH-AWD technology you see in modern Acuras.
I've had a 97 and now a 00' and i love the prelude so much. Like he said such a good all around car with enough aftermarket support to make it whatever you want to be. Show car, drag car, daily etc. just get used to topping off the oil every 1000 miles hahaha
best car review ever! I love that excitement, it's so spot on my own feeling when I tried the Honda Prelude 1999 with 200 hp. Funnest car I'd ever driven. I'm picking it up tomorrow. This video just made me realize even more how I've made the right decision!
I heard "smooth"about ten times and absolutely agree. It is the one word that best describes the Prelude. Remarkable thing is the smoothness is achieved without isolating the driver from the road.
Damn, I didnt know the last preludes pushed out 200 hp. Nice. Sounds great too. Can't argue the looks either. I remember my dad bought a new prelude back in 1990 and when I was around 10-11, I sat in his lap and controlled the steering wheel while we did 110 mph! Obviously he had his hands right next to the wheel, but man I remember thinking that was so cool.
I used to own one of these & they were great cars to drive, because you did not need to go fast to appreciate it. The steering was very precise & well weighted which was my favourite part. Only downside was that I found it a bit cramped, but the way this drove made you forget that. Another was that some people would provoke me to racing them when I was minding my own business, either because of jealousy or they thought their car was better, but if I raced them then the Prelude had no problem in showing what it could really do. For me, these cars are last of an era, before electronic steering + braking + throttle etc... were introduced & reduced the feel of proper driving. This makes me wish 100% analogue cars made a comeback, & the Prelude had a lot going for it which I still miss.
Man not just a car for kids, I'm 37 and really Desire one of these, they were so cool when they first came out, that front end design was pretty cool at the time, I think they've aged pretty well. Its a shame they've got that reputation of being driven by hoodie wearing teen morons, I think I'll get one anyways despite the moron car-teen demographic that plagues them )
Glad to hear it! maybe its just on the surface I see teens driving them mostly, hoodie up, holding the wheel gangster style! very popular with women on the occasion I see one around here too! looking forward to getting one!
Hey there! I like all these points! I'm really attracted to the SH system with the power vectoring to eliminate understeer on power on corner exits, fascinating! I've had faster cars, its kind of useless on the streets really and premium + low MPG gets old really fast! I do very much like the Blue, I think a pretty good value for money fun mobile!
@@kristoKR-zj8oi these engines the Honda preludes have are notorious for how much engine oil they burn, older cars usually burn oil also but this car specifically is more known for that
I really do miss cars like this, and your video squarely hit the nostalgia mark. I had a ‘93 si, a ‘97 base, and a ‘99 Type SH, so I was definitely a Prelude fan back in the day. When the VTEC kicked in just north of 5200 RPM, it always induced a grin. It wasn’t “fast” at all by current standards, but it was more direct, pure and fun than most of the overly digitized and relatively sterile high-HP platforms (BMW, cough) we’re now offered. The only criticism I had for the late Prelude - other than the Seinfeld era cloth seating surfaces - was the desperate need for a sixth gear. I remember many miles of highway cruising at 4000 or so RPM in 5th. Thanks and keep up the good work representing the north hills of the 412!
Ive owned cars worth 20x more than my 5th gen from high school. Ive driven high performance BMWs amd Mercedes a like. I have friends who havs owned amg mercedes and so on...but Ive never driven a car more fun to drive and my friends CONSTANTLY asked to barrow my 5th gen SH. Its one of the best cars ever made.
I like this guy, seems like a good guy, cant put my finger on why tho... NO HOMO OFC. But I LOL everytime he says lets go on this back road and his this cheeky grin everytime always gets me lmao
I absolutely love my Prelude! I have a 99 5th gen with 138k miles🔥 It drives and handles so well around curves and on straight roads, it’s so much fun bro. I’ve had all kinds of car but this one is the best I’ve had so far! The interior is immaculate for its age and the stock sound system sounds amazing for such an old car, I’m surprised. Definitely never getting rid of it 🤙🏾
thats the torque control system honda developed and put in the Prelude type sh. it was amazing! alot of critics said the system made the prelude feel rwd.
Preludes in my opinion are one of the most sporty little things ever built i myself own a 1988 prelude si 5 speed with 240,000 miles on it and even with it being high mileage it still runs amazing they are extremely fun to own im hoping to come across a somewhat clean 5th gen to add to my collection i just wish honda didnt discontinue making them god only knows what potential the prelude could have these days great review man it was very enjoyable and honest 👍🏻 prelude gang🤘🏻🤘🏻
my first car was a 00 Prelude, back over a decade ago. I've since owned a 350Z, Maxima and VW GTI. I missed the car so much i recently bought a clean 98 Type SH with also 173k miles. I love it, definitely underrated.
great review and all was true . im a car dealer and i tried and owned a more than 200 car a turbo and v8 and .... but the prelude is the best . feels very natural and powerful . i just hoped you was more mention on vtec kicks because they are very powerful !
I absolutely love my 2001 Silver Honda Prelude SH. I bought it new and it's always been kept in my garage. (I home office.) I'm near Atlanta, GA, so no salt rust at all. It's literally in showroom condition and just turned 100K miles.
The cylinder walls are fiber reinforced so they are stronger but also eat up the piston rings faster in the prelude. That mixed with the fact vtec is suppose to burn some oil when engaging, you have a recipe for a lot of oil being burned. It also didn't help that it seemed like high mileage h22 engines seemed to leak a ton of oil as well and the engine valve stem seals will also leak on a high mileage h22. Source: owned a 98 prelude and all these things added up equals me literally putting a quart of oil in the damn thing almost every fill up. I laugh now when people complain about their car leaking or burning a little bit of oil, lol. Shit was nothing compared to what my prelude was doing. All that being said it still ran great and pulled to redline just fine.
@@crate2819 well even with mine being an f20b swap it apparently burns oil too. So I assume every vtec Honda burns oil? Why dont they burn oil when you buy them new?
The 2.2L I4 VTEC is a legendary motor that time has sadly forgotten. I had a 1999 Prelude and miss that car so much especially that 5-speed transmission.
brings back good memories i had and 2001 electron blue type sh when i was in college and that car got me through some rough times if it wouldnt have bent valves i would have kept it
I own a 2001 prelude and I don't think the fuel mileage is all that great. Even if I drive slow I get about 400-500km a tank or 248-310 miles for you Americans. And that's from 60L of Premium gas
puffnpluky76 it isn't. It's shit. 29mpg, top gear on the highway going under the speed limit. But it's so much fun, and surprisingly comfortable. It feels like a grand tourer, almost.
puffnpluky76 yeah,I have an '01 Prelude 5 speed,I've heard that the gearing was supposed to be long but I don't really think so. At 100 kmh its revving at 3000 rpm in 5th. My 92 Civic si hatch is maybe 2600 rpm at 100 kmh so it gets phenomenal mileage compared to the lude, and the Civic uses regular fuel, I never run anything but chevron 94 in the lude tho,no ethanol in it 😎
i owned a 01 prelude base from 02-10. had to sell it in 2010 when the economy took a shit. loved that car and the vtec. have so many memories taking friends everywhere. was going to buy another one last year but went with a bmw 135i. similar feel but faster.
just sold mine for $2000 cad, theres so many of them around where i live, you can pick up a mint one for 3k with 150km on it, loved mine, wanted something newer

+elo benc ogunie meh would stop me from getting one, but all the cars I've owned have been honda so I'm biased ;) bigger sway bars should let the rear have some fun too
I've never been a fan of the headlights on this generation. Everything else about it is gorgeous. I love Preludes. I had a third gen si and it was incredibly dependable. It wasn't super powerful, but it was really fun to drive, especially on curvy roads. It felt a lot more well built and solid than any other car I've had. I really miss her.
thanks for the review! im actually trying to debate over an s13 or a prelude but my parents won't let me buy an s13 due to it not having any airbags and this video actually made me more optimistic about choosing the prelude!
Dude, even if you reviewed a rock is still watch it! The way you review is awesome and honestly I don't even check what car I just click when your video pops up on my feed lol
Another nice review. When I was younger I really wanted one of these, but ended up getting a good deal on an '89 CRX Si that I couldnt pass up. I remember easily over 10x, coming out to get into my CRX and noticing a note tucked under my windshield wiper, and even though these notes were all from different people, even in different cities, they all said basically the same thing,"If you ever wanna sell this car, call me at......" Lol, thats the only car Ive owned, where thats happened. It was eventually stolen, of course... Anyways back to the Lude! This gen always seemed to me to be a modernization of the 3rd gen Prelude. My cousin had a 3rd gen w/ the engine stroked to 2.3L, it was a fun drive. One thing about this review, is that you did not make any mention of this cars standout feature, its SuperHandling ATTS REAL Torque vectoring differential that speeds up the outside tire, whenever you turn! This car was ahead of its time and a true value. Man, I wonder how much better this wouldve sold, if Honda wouldve just given it a little bit more room in the rear...

I bought a '98 Prelude Type SH new, and it was a wonderful car. Thanks for bringing back memories, I miss it.
The Prelude has aged very well. Like It.
They are quite solid, and composed at higher speeds like many of the German sports cars. .
Great reply. What mods would you recommend?
It's so sad to see what Honda has become now.... smh. What happened .....
The VTEC was just too much for them to handle. It turned on them... ate them inside and out... made them lose their way.
bean counters took over the company
The new Civic Type R looks like a beast. But otherwise I agree with you.
the market changed
FerpiliciousProducts meh.. Not a fan of the turbo but we'll see how it is when it comes out
For those wondering about the Type SH designation, it means Super Handling and it refers to the Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS) which was an early torque vectoring system.
Thank you!
You didn't mention the difference between a standard prelude and the SH model?
I heard it too lol
+DarthVaderOG true 😂😂
I heard it lol
I heard it too but I thought I was trippin or something lol
I heard something too! lol
A peach of a car. Had a new one in 1998 and I still remember it as one of the best and most fun cars I ever owned. Great engine, brilliant chassis. They were very under rated.
There aren't that many out there because they all rusted out or were given the fast and furious treatment....
Lol mines still stock af 😂
@@dingo3225 nice job my man
Glad to see that you're having fun (: I myself have one of these as well, a 2000 Type SH.
Preludes actually do have nice sound systems because of the 'Acoustic Feedback System" for fat jams...
I've had a 97 and now a 00' and i love the prelude so much. Like he said such a good all around car with enough aftermarket support to make it whatever you want to be. Show car, drag car, daily etc. just get used to topping off the oil every 1000 miles hahaha
Just picked up a 98 silver base model. Bought from the original owner and its bone stock. I'm looking forward to driving it
Dan W lucky son of a gun
my favorite TH-camr in one of my favorite cars. I had 2000 Honda Prelude, the car that made me fall in love with cars and introduced me to car culture
Really enjoyed this review you can really see the fun he's having with this Prelude. Priceless! You cant make that stuff up 👍🏼👊🏻
best car review ever! I love that excitement, it's so spot on my own feeling when I tried the Honda Prelude 1999 with 200 hp. Funnest car I'd ever driven. I'm picking it up tomorrow. This video just made me realize even more how I've made the right decision!
Thanks Ida, I'm glad it helped! Congrats on getting your Prelude!
back when Honda was fun
Its a shame they've got that reputation of being driven by hoodie wearing teen morons, I think I'll get one anyways despite the moron car-teen demographic that plagues them )
you would actually be surprised by one of the best car communities out there, a lot of mature helpful ppl #PreludeSquad
Being a hoodie wearing teen moron I take offense to this
Lol who cares what humans think u get what u like bro fck em
I had a '99 SH in black that I loved. This video makes me want to get another one. Thanks for bringing back good memories!
lol how much oil was burned during this review
3miles...5.2 quarts exactly lol
Now, that's fucking funny
Why?
LMFAO 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks and keep up the good work representing the north hills of the 412!
i had one 1995...only who drives this car can understand the feeling.
I have a 93 si and love it
The dash thoo 😁 too good
The mk4 prelude dash is the best dash alongside the NSX one lol
Ive owned cars worth 20x more than my 5th gen from high school. Ive driven high performance BMWs amd Mercedes a like. I have friends who havs owned amg mercedes and so on...but Ive never driven a car more fun to drive and my friends CONSTANTLY asked to barrow my 5th gen SH. Its one of the best cars ever made.
I've once been in a back of a prelude... crazy shit.
I like this guy, seems like a good guy, cant put my finger on why tho... NO HOMO OFC. But I LOL everytime he says lets go on this back road and his this cheeky grin everytime always gets me lmao
Chris H eat him out already.
Great review, I've owned a '92 and a '97 and love them!
By far the best review of this generation Lude to date.
Makes me sad they dont make cars like this anymore :(
I absolutely love my Prelude! Definitely never getting rid of it 🤙🏾
I found a 99 Prelude with 120k miles for $2850, worth it?
yeah try to lower the price on it if you can just got mine for 2400 same year but 144k miles id say its worth it
SuzuRyderHD did u get it?
I got one with 190k for $1900 but the exterior was a little rough
manual?
I just bought a 98 bout 2 weeks ago and its been my daily driver, and it is a fun car to drive! So far so good
Those headlights aren't stock. Also you never talked about the ATTS which is the whole point of buying a Type SH over a base.
Gewehr7 atts?
thats the torque control system honda developed and put in the Prelude type sh. it was amazing! alot of critics said the system made the prelude feel rwd.
Active Torque Transfer System. I bought an SH brand new off the lot 97. Loved that car.
Should have talked about the ATTS system Matt, for those who don't know about it
my first car was a 00 Prelude, back over a decade ago. I've since owned a 350Z, Maxima and VW GTI. I missed the car so much i recently bought a clean 98 Type SH with also 173k miles. I love it, definitely underrated.
Wish they can comeback. With that said add awd with lsd.
great review and all was true .
im a car dealer and i tried and owned a more than 200 car a turbo and v8 and .... but the prelude is the best . feels very natural and powerful . i just hoped you was more mention on vtec kicks because they are very powerful !
this car is unique looking. I like it.
Buying a 2001 Honda Prelude this month from a good friend actually. I absolutely can't wait
I had one of those right after my 5.0. It always felt like i was driving F-1.
I absolutely love my 2001 Silver Honda Prelude SH. I bought it new and it's always been kept in my garage. (I home office.) I'm near Atlanta, GA, so no salt rust at all. It's literally in showroom condition and just turned 100K miles.
Still?
How much?
i love my 98 prelude. just burns oil like any other h22a
Just bought a 98 sh, owner who sold it to me said it burns a lot of oil. What's the reasoning to this common Honda problem?
I had a 1999 Prelude and miss that car so much especially that 5-speed transmission.
you should review a 1986 Honda Prelude Si
brings back good memories i had and 2001 electron blue type sh when i was in college and that car got me through some rough times if it wouldnt have bent valves i would have kept it
Love the Prelude. I have the JDM Type-S :)
i got one last month it's amazing to drive i have a 1999 honda prelude type sh all stock
My 92 Civic si hatch is maybe 2600 rpm at 100 kmh so it gets phenomenal mileage compared to the lude, and the Civic uses regular fuel, I never run anything but chevron 94 in the lude tho,no ethanol in it 😎
Oh wah. Do you want good fuel economy or do you want to have some fun? Buy a Yaris next time, dude.
puffnpluky76 lol I get the same on my Acura TL
Mine'a a 97 & it does 600km around town and 750km on the freeway. I don't often rev the hell out of it though
i owned a 01 prelude base from 02-10. had to sell it in 2010 when the economy took a shit. loved that car and the vtec. have so many memories taking friends everywhere. was going to buy another one last year but went with a bmw 135i. similar feel but faster.
just sold mine for $2000 cad, theres so many of them around where i live, you can pick up a mint one for 3k with 150km on it, loved mine, wanted something newer
thanks Matt for finally reviewing a Prelude : )
hey do you want to review a 1986 Ford F-150 300 straight 6 rwd
Finally, my car has a review! mine is just like this one except it has 198000 miles, black, and has a full exhuast system. It's been my first car and I love it just as much as I did 3 years ago
I want a prelude now
same
+cashivan its fwd :/
+elo benc ogunie meh would stop me from getting one, but all the cars I've owned have been honda so I'm biased ;) bigger sway bars should let the rear have some fun too
so what if its fwd? dont be that douchebag
I have a Grand Prix gxp can you do one of those?!!
Mine is tuned and has intake and exhaust
Send me a message on Facebook or to subaruwrxfanproductions@gmail.com and we can try to work something out!
+BaseballPRO16 the Grand Prix sucks ass. Seriously, a Pontiac?? If it ain't a gto stfu
+George Lopez it's got a v8 let it slide
Pontiac has made great cars you tool
thanks for the review! im actually trying to debate over an s13 or a prelude but my parents won't let me buy an s13 due to it not having any airbags and this video actually made me more optimistic about choosing the prelude!
CL be like; 8500 firm no low balls
77714anthony 😄
Got a super clean sh for $1400 just needed a new clutch.
Nothing beats a Honda from the early 90's... the bodies of these cars had such a handling feeling
This isn't a review. You stated two points about the car and then repeated them
+ThruMy4Eyes Lol
yeah all the reviews on your channel are far better.
Dude, even if you reviewed a rock is still watch it! The way you review is awesome and honestly I don't even check what car I just click when your video pops up on my feed lol
Anyone else hear crying noises around the 4min mark?
And he said it when he said the back seat is more fit for kids, so how about perfect timing there. xD
+KoreanAFOL he offended the baby lol
5:13
Ahh the Prelude, good chassis, bullet proof engine and alot of fun to drive. An underrated car that you never see here in the UK.
Slow down when you talk. You mumble a lot.
I can understand him 100%
You're right.
You're just listening too slow. Or you could slow down the vid 🙃
haha. i kinda stutter sometimes. it's funny. :P
shutup
Wish mine wasn't so rusted, I had a 97 sh and I absolutely loved it.
That Prelude is a mess
That thing runs as strong as my 06 civic si with 150k miles, gotta love Honda
I always enjoy the variety of his reviews...I call him Mr.Giggley...because He gets so excited at times punching the gas pedal.....good stuff
One of the reasons i have S2k it's your review. Now i discovered this review for my other car. Can't wait to see this one too.
