- Solo camping in rain. I set off on my first ever backcountry solo canoe trip on a windy fall day in Algonquin Park. Beginning from access 17 (Shall Lake), I paddled straight into a headwind, past the Kitty Lake Cabin and into Booth Lake, before struggling down McCarthy Creek. After a few portages, I reached Godda Lake for my first of two nights. Having spent many nights in the backcountry with others, I felt ready to venture out on my own and see if complete solitude was for me. Having never used a double blade or pack boat before, this trip was full of firsts.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to properly double blade without getting wet and how to effectively steer the canoe without loosing momentum. Let me know in the comments below. Matt- throughly enjoyed Part 1. I actually prefer soloing as everything I do is not open to criticism. Appreciate you showing your pack weight as I have issues getting my pack weight down and am always curious as to how others pack. Also, I’m a huge fan of Swift pack boats and no longer use a regular canoe seat as my back insists on the comfort of lumbar support. I prefer not to get started on the pigs that leave their trash all over the camp sites (their personal pig sty). Thanks for noting the trash and hauling out some of it. Gotta go and get to Part 2.
Thanks Ron for watching! Back support is always key on a canoe trip. Many bring chairs to give their back a break but to always have it in the canoe is gold. I can never stand garbage in the woods (or anywhere). People would suddenly care if it was in their house though!
Well done Matt. The wind and the rain really know how to make things difficult, but you pressed on and did a great job. I have searched the entire interweb and no one roasts a marshmallow as well as you do!

I'm sure it has been said by now, but move those black rings down closer to the blades that will help with not getting wet. Sometimes a longer double blade works too. I also wear rain pants. And I even went as far as buying a front spray cover for my boat now to keep nice and dry. Cheers!
The black rings were almost in the water and as close to the blades as they could go. The water was coming off the blade itself and the rings never seemed to get used. I think a longer blade would have helped. Sadly, that was the longest one AO offered but if I buy one, I will be getting a longer one. Rain paints are a must for sure! Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for posting. Subscribed. I did my first solo in Sept. 2020. I did it because it 'kinda' frightened me and I wanted to see how I'd fare. Turned out better than I thought. I'd do it again but I have to say I enjoy the company of others that come along.

Wonderful Part 1! I was laughing when you were laying down getting ready to go to sleep and you moved the camera up, it looked like you were in a smores coma! lol I ate one of those big marshmallows one time and I was so sick to my stomach I can hardly look at them now. lol Looking forward to the next part, thanks for sharing. :) :)

Hi Matt, Another excellent video that I quite enjoyed watching. Try putting the splash protectors on the kayak paddles closer to the blades. Also try using a shallower stroke, almost parallel to the water rather then perpendicular/deep like you appeared to be doing. If this is difficult to do you might want to try a longer paddle as well. The more touring focused paddles tend to have a more shallow entry which means they also don't come out of the water as high up which translates into less water on you as well. Nice use of drama at the end of the video to make sure that we'll be back for part two!
If all else fails wear a pair of rain pants.
@@brobob969 I made a spray foredeck cover that worked well and am building a full length one for this year. Saves a lot of bailing.
Some good tips. I had the splash guards almost all the way down to the paddle. The water was coming off the blade itself and wind took it onto me. I will have to try shallower strokes. I’m just use to dipping my paddle strait down into the water I guess.
brobob969 I wore rain pants but there were times when I wanted to take them off because I was warm. The water was also getting all over my jacket and my face so it made the paddles unenjoyable. I will be trying some of Noble Endeavours suggestions but until I correct the problem, rain paints it is!
Nice one Matt! Great to see your first solo trip and the route you picked off the beaten path. After trying a pack boat do you prefer it over a traditional canoe?
I love the ability to battle a headwind with a double blade sitting low in a kayak like seat. It also made for some quick paddling when the wind wasn’t blowing. I wasn’t able to miniver the canoe nearly as well as a bigger canoe. Turning was very difficult and not being able to lean over limited my abilities with some strokes I often use. Stability was a concern also. I would love to try the same canoe with a canoe seat and see how it’s different. All in all, I would use one again now that I’ve learned a few things. They are pretty quick in the right moments.
Pretty sure all great canoe trips start in the rain, thats just a fact! Hahaha. Thumbs up from us dude!

An enjoyable episode of your life of adventures. When you weighed the canoe and pack you had lbs and on your first night it was -8. Are your temperature readings Celsius or Fahrenheit? Cheers from Melbourne, Australia.
We were reluctant converts in the first place, and live next to Murica which returned to Fahrenheit and lbs after about three days of officially having gone metric. We Canuckistanis are generally schitzo on the matter.
Thanks! Weight is in pounds so 25.5KG for the pack and 21KG for the canoe. -8 was in Celsius. Like uguysrnuts said above, because we live next to the US, we interchange everything making it confusing.
11:32 The background threw me for a second. Thought maybe you were faking a deep wilderness adventure, as it looked like a bridge behind you. But searching Google Earth, I see it's actually a dam.
(makes me wonder how they even built that in the middle of nowhere!)
I should have mentioned it as it was right at the end of the portage. There must have been a road built to there at some point. Would be interesting to find it!
@@MattHaughn I looked on Jeff's Maps, and it does show that there was a road nearby at one point. (obviously) So much history hidden in that park.

Please have mercy and slow down the camera movement. Swinging the camera from one shot to the next is a good way to have lots of folks like me, turning your video off. It makes me and others dizzy
