I’ve been doing this for years. Bought two commercial properties with large enough space to buy and store shingles by truckloads and accessories by pallets and more. I’m very small company only doing about $2m a year in Texas. Does have other cost required, such as requiring equipment like forklift, flatbed trucks, trailers etc to be able to get material from our yard out to job sites. But I save huge money on buying. My dad was a cattle rancher when I was growing up. He taught me, you don’t make your money when you sell… You make it when you buy. I save 15-20% on shingles by buying bulk. And save way more than that on accessories. Plywood fluctuates dramatically every year up and down. When it’s down I buy several pallets. When it’s high I use my stock bought cheap!
I will say I spend over $200,000 a year with Lowes roofing products. They save us a ton of money. I do also use ABC, SRS, and Pacific Supply. With the large suppliers I almost never get an incorrect delivery. With Lowes , I don’t think we have EVER gotten one correct yet! Totally not exaggerating! Even if it is just something as simple as a half empty spray paint can. There is always something wrong! That is one of the perks of going with the larger suppliers. Lowe’s and Home Depot staff do not specialize with just roofing products they deal with all types of products so half the time they don’t even know exactly what they are selling in regard to roofing. Material orders have to absolutely be as specific as can be with the box stores.
We spend a lot of money with Lowe’s as well for certain things We have definitely had some absurd delivery issues with them so, I pay a person to check every delivery before the installers show up, I think sometimes I end up eating up the material savings on man hours
I purchase from Gulf Eagle Supply. They are always cheaper than the big 3, and the service is much better. The only time I go elsewhere is if some color isnt in stock, in which case I usually go with Southern Shingles (SRS). It's just my father and I that sell the roofs, so we do about 4 per month averaged out (of course winter is slow and summer/spring is faster), so we don't do any bulk and just order and deliver each roof individually as it comes.

Hi Dmitry, thank you for producing this very informative exposé of the behind the scenes within the roofing industry. Count on us to support the Common Sense Solution you proposed to your audience. Our systems work 24 hours a day 7 days a week with the sole purpose of increasing your audience's profits.
Love the content. As a much smaller company than most , I certainly see the sense in buying wholesale, even if im only saving 5k on 100k in purchases. As a 1 man operation it's often difficult to get to this perspective, thanks again. A penny saved is still a penny earned!
I'm just a consumer .. I live in Oregon just had a quote from Dabella 24 Square 5 /12 single story hip roof 1711 Square foot house $20, 377 with Timberline American harvest asphalt shingle .Seems a bit high ?
However, big box stores won't deliver it correctly, will substitute items without letting you know. Plus customer service sucks. If you're saving 20+% then it's worth it
I do about 4M in sales and am definitely going to start buying accessories, underlayment metals etc in bulk from various places like the ROOF store and VanBoxell. But I don’t feel like you offered a solution for not buying from the big distributors, because of their ability to load roofs. I think my labor cost me $15 a square for Hand load, but I don’t want to burn my guys out. The ease of loading directly onto a roof makes the most sense.
I only purchase materials through American Roofing Supply from time to time. I'll check up on prices through Home Depot recently. Home Depot has been a few hundered dollars more ARS raised durations from 39.30 a bundle to 41.30 a bundle
What good is a 11% rebate serving as a store credit? I want the cash in my account to be used elsewhere for my business not exclusively at a big box store. However, you could roll that rebate over to the next order, assuming thats what you did when you were running storm group.
If they gave you a cash rebate instead of store credit the rebate would be lower. They can offer more as store credit since they can factor in the retail markup to what they are offering back to you.
I bought my appliances, remodeled kitchen, and bought furniture and anything for my house using rebates, and after that applied it to future orders that helped me get roofs for free basically. Cash left in my account could be used for other things instead of mayerials
Home Depot all day long! Especially, when you're a 'Managed Account' like me. You have your own personal material assistant that handles everything. Lower prices, tons of locations, CASH back......that's right.....CASH! And, many more perks. Love Home Depot. Because, I can tell you right now, Homeowners don't give a shit what brand of roofing materials you install. They hear Timberline and they're good to go.
I couldn't have sold my company at a better time!! So glad to be out of the Business!! I do not want to have anything to do with the Greed of the supply houses and the shingle manufacturers. Metal Roofing is starting to make more and more sense by the day. How can it be a good thing when a roof has gone up drastically and they have to be replaced every 20 to 25 years on average? The Game is just not enjoyable as it used to be. I went from loving roofing with a passion to not wanting to have anything to do with roofing again. It has been a blessing for my sanity. My New business is doing amazing. The passion is back and I will never look back. It was a nice ride.
Why do you have American Roofing Supply on the "Common Sense" side? They are owned by SRS and are actually more expensive sometimes than ABC in my market in Colorado Springs. Not trying to flame the content, its great. Just curious the reasoning behind it.
I don’t think small roofers are aware of this. . Nor has the vision to do something about that. I CALL FOR AN ACTION TO ALL MY SMALL LATINO ROOFING OWNERS AND GET TOGETHER TO BUY DIRECTLY FROM MANUFACTURERS!!! What an awesome video DMITRY!!!
Yes, you're absolutely right. Roofing companies have made a lot of money during this time. You are only as good as your last Roof, so with these high prices. I make sure I'm giving my customers all they can get. Ice and water shield at Valley's and Eve's. Rakes If you are close to salt water, you're getting stainless steel nails. other than that hot dip nails When you put a shingle on, thank bout how long it's got to last? Correct nailing patterns are important, as is the layout. For long jevity of roofing companies that use electro Galvanize. nails Will rust out in 5 years So what good is that 30 or shingle with all those rusty nails? Everything is made in United States but the nails and the A 11 Staples. China.
In the interest of fairness, you should put up on the board that Home Depot's annual revenue is $151 billion, Lowes is $97 billion, Menards is $13 billion and Ace Hardware is $9.2 billion.
Not really. As a former adjuster and now part-owner of a roofing company, I can tell you we all use the same system for pricing. The only arguments are over which line items to include or not include. But as far as unit prices, there's never an argument, it's all the same software which determines unit pricing. And as far as the pricing to a homeowner, your deductible is your deductible. That's the out of pocket expense. So it's just a matter of which contractor you wish to do business with when it's an insurance claim. And I'm from Texas, so nobody pays for a roof out of pocket because you will get a hailstorm at some point during the life of your roof.
@@hahahahhahahhaha786 That makes no sense. Roofers have no control over material pricing. It is whatever it is, and we have to pay it. That comes from the manufacturers and suppliers. Roofing contractors cannot affect material pricing. And the only insurance fraud that goes on are contractors that cover or waive homeowner deductibles or part of the deductible.
Beacon is publicly traded, I just looked at their financials. $8.4 billion sold to end up with $434mil. That is 5%. That seems very fair, Dmitry you're making the suppliers out to be the big bad wolf, in reality, they are our closest ally. Big thanks to my local people and ABC!🔨🫡

I am planning to buy accessories im bulk through the winter as i can afford it to save in the 2024 roofing season
I’ll do 3M in sales this year selling just roofing accessories in bulk. Growing organically. The need is there.

What regulations are driving up the cost of shingles? Shingles have increased way more and independently of oil prices
