Do You Have Serotonin Deficiency?

Serotonin is a chemical that carries messages between nerve cells in the brain and throughout your body. Serotonin plays a key role in such body functions as mood, sleep, digestion, nausea, wound healing, bone health, blood clotting and sexual desire. Serotonin levels that are too low or too high can cause physical and psychological health problems.
Serotonin, also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), is a monoamine neurotransmitter. It also acts as a hormone.
As a neurotransmitter, serotonin carries messages between nerve cells in your brain (your central nervous system) and throughout your body (your peripheral nervous system). These chemical messages tell your body how to work.
Most of the serotonin found in your body is in your gut (intestines). About 90% of serotonin is found in the cells lining your gastrointestinal tract. It’s released into your blood circulation and absorbed by platelets. Only about 10% is produced in your brain.
Serotonin is made from the essential amino acid tryptophan. An essential amino acid means it can’t be made by your body. It has to be obtained from the foods you eat.
A low serotonin level usually has more than one cause. Technically, serotonin levels are low because:
Your body isn’t producing enough serotonin.
Your body isn’t effectively using serotonin. This can happen if you don’t have enough serotonin receptors or the receptors aren’t working as they should.

In January I went to a psychiatrist because I was very depressed from a traumatic event. She switched my meds, so I ended up being on Wellbutrin, zoloft, and Seroquel all at once. Five days into this I had what is believed to be Serotonin syndrome. After this I was scared to take my one medication and stopped taking it for four months. In those four months I became severely depleted in Serotonin, not realizing it till two weeks ago.
I almost lost my job, I had to take FMLA leave. I was getting depersonalization and so much more I almost went to a psychiatric ward. But I made myself take my medicine and not be scared. I literally felt my body come back into my brain the first three days. I was dizzy and felt like I was back inside myself. I hope one day I can be successfully off of them and back to my old self beforeJanuary. I have had a headache since March, lost 30lbs, no appetite, first slept alot then didn’t sleep for a week, cried 24/7, couldn’t drive I was scared, could Not show up at work, constipated, not digesting food, no bladder feeling, fatigue like death, pins and needles everywhere, suicidal thoughts. Just overall It felt like nothing I’ve ever experienced my body was shutting down waiting for death. It was a scary feeling. None of my automatic nervous system functions were working “automatically” like it should. I knew it was time to take it.

It keeps the receptors open so more serotonin (or dopamin or gaba or whatever) can stay in the receptors. It forces the brain into an unnatural state. Hence the horrific side effecrs of all these drugs.

A year ago my SSRI crapped out. Tried 14 different meds and none worked - then I learned my body isn't barely making any serotonin through lab work. I now understand production in the gut. Holistic NP put me on 5-HTP and I had a bad response (much like a bad ssri response). I am now taking GMP certified supplements (D, iron, omega 3) and have made drastic changes in diet. I have daily diarrhea. The only med I take is a benzo once a day to help me sleep, but I have such bad anxiety and told my cortisol runs in a normal circadian rhythm but runs high. I have bad dreams nightly. I was tested for negative for mthfr gene. Advice please as I'm at the end of my rope.

TheJDocRealMinute it’s been 4 weeks, I had to ween myself off of sleeping pills due to tolerance, supplementing tryptophan (500 mg) kind of gave me a headache and made me feel stiff in my joints and muscles, might have been the brand cause I took a tryptophan containing supplements before without that happening.
I’ve been turning to prayer for help and eventually to God and have made it 10 days past my last dose of Lunesta and have slept better on most of those days since I had been on Lunesta. Anhedonia and irritability is still a challenge. I only supplemented tryptophan for one night though. Coming out of a 2 year old episode of hearing voices, depression, insomnia etc I thank God for every day he’s stayed with me and every day he’s helped me.

A simple way to raise serotonin and feel great is with carbohydrates ! one of the best meals to achieve this is a bowl of Porridge oats with a banana or sultanas and finish off with a drizzle of honey... a protein dominant meal / diet is not effective at raising serotonin due to the blood brain barrier favouring the Amino acid "Leucine" in the protein and thus not allowing sufficient serotonin through, that's why a protein dominant diet on a regular basis can make you feel irritable and uptight. Also too much caffeine stimulates the Adrenal glands to produce adrenaline and contributes to a high state of mental alertness, tension, and racing thoughts as well as being in a state of panic / aggression with long term high regular intake. A normal state of relaxation, calmness and a positive mood is achieved with a combination of zero caffeine and quality carbohydrates.

My plan to address this problem looks like this:
1- fix gut/digestion dysfunctions first to increase absorbance efficiency levels.
2- target insulin/blood sugar levels stabilization.
3- attempt to supplement main building blocks first while maintaining serotonin-biased diet to aid process (in case absorbance levels increase from point 1)
4a- if plan worked then maintain exercise&meditate regularly + protein-rich diet (or other serotonin-biased diet)
4b- if deficiency persisted, supplement 5-HTP directly along necessary catalysts and wish for the best. (Or alternatively visit an awesome dr. Like ur self, although scarce overseas.)

When 5 HTP is combined with SSRIs, the combination may cause serotonin syndrome, a kind of serotonin toxicity.
While 5 HTP increases the production of serotonin in the brain, SSRIs will increase the time serotonin spends at nerve endings. This can lead to dangerous amplification of signals in the serotonergic system.
Do not take 5 HTP and Theanine while you are taking the SSRI's.

Serotonin is created by an amino acid called tryptophan. Niacin is part of the metabolizing process of forming serotonin from tryptophan. Therefore, niacin deficiency can directly impact mood by affecting your production of serotonin

You cannot take supplements that increase Serotonin with SSRI's. I would recommend cleaning up your diet ---no Wheat, Gluten, Soy, Peanuts, and Sugar---first.

    How coffee effects serotonin production?

    • @thejdocrealminute4648
      @thejdocrealminute4648  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Chronic caffeine intake has been shown to increase the receptors of serotonin (26-30% increase), GABA (65% increase), and acetylcholine (40-50%). This may contribute to the elevated mood and perceived increase in energy we feel after a coffee (which makes espresso a handy pre-workout drink).
