Tips for non-smokers in a survival-type situation: if you are offered cigarettes or are allotted them, don't just say "I don't smoke, so I don't want them!" - you'd be giving up valuable currency right away. Just because you won't smoke 'em doesn't mean you can't use 'em.
Not gonna lie, if I had to be stranded out at sea, I would want Steve as my raft mate. He has a way of looking at the positive side of everything. Plus he just screams survivor-type. Well brother, you made lemonade out of some crappy lemons so....right on.

Pall Mall. Wherever particular people congregate...on a life raft. I don't smoke, but packages like the ones you find in your rations are really visually appealing. Even the mini-packs of 4 or so hold the same design of their full-size cousins. (And, of course, no health warnings.) Little reminders of a bygone era.
I stumbled upon these videos from reddit where your 61 year old peanut butter MRE video was posted. Fascinating stuff. My grandfather and uncle and brother are all veterans and have shared their experiences with me about eating MREs. Thanks and keep making these awesome videos!

It's hilarious that they switched the old charms out with new charms. If you're going to screw with it, why not just take it? Why try and pass off some obviously modern pieces?
If you look carefully, the silver packaging he took the Charms from says August 1992. They didn't exchange the Charms, they exchanged the whole 1 day ration pack.
It's a petty that it got all messed up, if the guy at least sold it to you as a open ration... Long gone is the time when we were scammed just on pawn shops, face to face. Now they do it through the internet. This video just got me wondering if somewhere in the US of A there is a secret bunker from the old days filled with rare rations just waiting someone to find them and send your way to be reviewed. I never saw a box like that, but I'm not surprised that it was opened and resealed. In the early eighties while aboard an LST, I repacked self-inflating life rafts with whatever was old. We ended up with half a garbage bag full of couple-year-old odd-brand cigarettes that were distributed among deck department. Same with pocket knives, P-38s, signal mirrors, etc...A lot of the stuff was just inspected, but a lot of stuff got switched out. For example, all canned water and cigarettes. I still use my last P-38 that I got then, though they were easily available until the Marines switched to MREs. We would sleep at lunch time and eat C-Rats or MREs during working hours. I have a more than 37-year-old pack of the water-resistant matches in a small survival kit, among other items.
Great stuff there Steve! So good to see a super rare ration in detail like that. What a disappointment about it already being opened up though. I hate when things like that happen, but at least this can act as a reminder to people to be as careful as possible when buying interesting stuff that might be tampered with (whether old rations, packs of old sports cards or whatever...). About the cigarettes, Steve: American Indians and First Nations groups allowed to sell tobacco are tax exempt, as well, and are allowed to bring in brand names (Pall Mall, Salem's, Camel's.) Not sure how you would date a pack of smokes, but I'd be surprised if those packs were the real McCoy.
I had a really strange dream 2 days ago that I ate a can of Spaghetti'Os out of the can in the present day, and they were clearanced, but the date of manufacture on the can was 1973. They were soggy, but still good. This was a dream. I'll have to try this in real life. I researched and found out that 43-year-old food can really still be good.
So basically this survival package is like a large accessory pack from a standard MRE. I mean, no food? Only candy? Mind you, I wouldn't mind having to subsist on this if it was the only edible thing I had while adrift.
Talk about rare rations! I didn't even know these abandon ship rats existed. Definitely a bummer that the box was previously opened, I know you had your heart set on a pack of Luckys. Maybe next time!

Non filtered cigarettes feel smoother because the air flow isnt disturbed, so that the particles do not come into as much contact with the surface area of the throat or trachea. while filters catch some particles, they also inhibit the fluidity of the pull, or puff.
Sounds like we need more advanced filters. It's causing turbulent flow is what you are saying. If we had a 2 stage filter that changes the flow back to laminer flow then it would possibly be smooth again.

I must agree with you cigarettes should be put in all survival packs, moral plays a massive part in survival. Having something to look forward to during a very stressful or very boaring day could make all the difference.
My Grandfather was in the Navy most of his life he worked in the ship yard in Alameda CA..when I was a kid he would bring these home take the cigs. Out and matches then give me the candy ,this brought back memories, thanks for sharing Awesome oh and btw the Cigs. Were Lucky Strikes
The new cigarettes add ammonia and other chemicals to "Freebase" the Nicotine due to the lower nicotine levels in modern cigarettes. The older ones had enough nicotine that they did not have to add the boosting agents.
Steve one of the guys in my office was a swabbie and he told me they would break into the life raft supplies to get the smokes out and then reseal them as their life was on the line if they needed them. A court marshall affair but when you are what 18 you do stupid things so what you saw doesn't surprise me at all except they actually had the smokes left in them....

Maybe they were stolen over the years, or civil defence moved them to other places...
Its interesting that Pall Mall (pronounced differently in the UK) was a cigarette produced for the UK's ultra rich clique as a table or after dinner ciggy and through acquisitions ended up as an American best seller with the UK not seeing them for many long years except as a budget tobacco brand but now here in Britain all smokes are sold in infected earwax coloured packets with lots of huge warnings about death and nastiness on the packet.

What I love about these older rations is that when they packed these things with limited space in mind they included cigarettes.
This channel is just unbox therapy but with MREs and taste testing.
