1992 Winter Olympic Hockey shootout

The first ever shoot out to decide a playoff game in Winter Olympic history, pitting Canada and Germany. NO ONE seemed to know exactly how to go about staging this first shoot out, especially Jiggs and Clement. And the director that picked the awful overhead angle.....YOU CAN'T SEE! But here it is none the less!

I'm grateful for the person who posted this historic moment [2/18/92]. I've told this story many times and I'm glad I can post it here. I moved to central Kentucky five years earlier and was astounded at the veneration Kentuckians have for University of Kentucky basketball! So, I watched this game and saw the first 11 shots and as Brockmann of Germany was skating toward the puck, our local CBS affiliate went to the coach Rick Pitino Show - a pregame show before a regular-season b-ball game [2/19/92 MS State]. I WAS LIVID!!! I immediately called to chew their butts out but it was busy for hours. I wrote them: I know there wasn't a "Kentucky connection" meaning, nobody from Kentucky was playing in this match but you guys got to get a broader perspective on the world of sports! I hope Kentucky loses in the first round of the playoffs. The local affiliate replied with a letter stating while they need to remain loyal to their local market, they did regret not broadcasting to the end. UK lost to Duke in overtime in the East regional finals 104 to 103 with a pass thrown from Grant Hill to Christian Laettner. Oddly, I became an even keeled UK fan because of this game.

I recorded all these games on my parents VCR . A great tournament indeed with some of the best hockey I ever saw played. The gold medal was won by the Unified Team(The name given to Russia when their democracy collapsed)
