I grew up watching this movie. It was something my dad and I would watch all the time. And sometimes we would randomly just say “toe pick.” To each other as a joke between us. My dad passed away three days ago. And I was searching through my DVD collection and found this movie, and watched it. One of my best childhood memories comes with this movie.
In high school we did ice skating for phy ed. My best friend and I both bought skates, they only had figure skates in his size. He would constantly fall down, often tripping because he caught the toepick. Every time he fell K would call out " toepick" good times, I miss him.
I don't think it's under rated, it's a hugely popular movie. On TV, there are always repeats and airings of it. People love this movie. It's a classic. They even made many spin off movies from this film.
I met and talked with director Paul Michael Glasser who shared some interesting things about this movie... 1. Moira Kelly got the part because she went to the audition with her brother and they were fighting and everyone thought "this girl is tough enough to play the part" 2. Moira Kelly shot most of the movie with a broken leg... they shot her mostly above the waist to hide it. PMG specifically mentioned the scene where she was crawling around looking for her erring 3. PMG wanted to put in a scene where DB Sweeney was playing pond hockey at night with a bunch of cars pulled up along the sides of the banks with their lights on to show his love for the game
I was saying that while watching the movie. I thought there shoulda been a pond hockey scene since Kate was chastising him for the brutish hockey culture he comes from. Would’ve been nice to see her go out to talk with him while he’s on the pond and maybe that’s where they play the game of hockey they played. Would’ve represented her getting away from the structure and pristine condition of the rink and learning to embrace the rough but humble background of his
I knew she had a broken leg part of the movie, specifically the scene where Doug carries drunk Kate into her room and sets her down. I didn't think it was most of the movie. That would make skating a challenge.
Here we can see that love compliments each other completely.... The guy being the macho ego of it all... Stands out in front of the girl he loves... And demands an answer... That being strong physically needs her in an opposite way... The girl meanwhile is caught up... And now must stand up in her own way and meet the challenge the guy offers... The not only the guy is prepared to embrace the love but she herself must also... By doing the impossible (the pavchenko) she proves to the guy that the love is not one sided that the girl also shall brave the consequences (and even surpass it)... Deeply moved on the line: Why did you do it? Because I love you, Remember who said it first is definitely the signature of the movie... Well done!!!
cleverallan that’s why it pays for a lot of guys of try to be tough and hard of the time, to at least feel vulnerable with the woman they love. Love how the film demonstrates this.
This was the most inspirational movie ever for me. I saw this many times over recently when I discovered it online. It taught me that if you miss your first chance of an opportunity to suceed in your life take advantage of when the second opportunity comes to you or else you will regret it afterwards. The most important thing here is that love is powerful and can make people do things they never dreamed of doing. This was the best most emotional movie for me and in my life and I looked back at mine and said If I had a second chance I would make it better for myself in suceeding my dreams.
It's 2022 and I came across this 90's movie! ...I wonder what I've been watching these days ...why haven't I come across this movie earlier!!This movie was so realistic...it doesn't seem they were acting...how wonderfully executed ....What a cute love story!!...I can't get over it now ...
Learning how to figure skate TAKES YEARS of practice, big time commitment, to perfect, especially a couple!!! That's got to be the hardest thing to do in my opinion!!! I admire these figure skaters that they have to give up and sacrifice!!! The ones that make it to the Olympics, KUDOS TO THEM !!!
Best love declaration scene ever - bar none. I've seen all the famous ones but this is by far the most intense, the most 'real' I've seen in cinema. There's no music either between 0:01 and 1:32, aka something which works wonderfully because there's no audio distraction or 'manipulation' of the viewer's emotions via artificial means. The chemistry between the actors is 99% of the magic here.
Neither Moira Kelly nor D.B. Sweeney knew how to skate before making this movie. After auditioning and convincing the producers they were the right actors for the roles, they spent the next three months intensively learning how to skate.
She found out she had a whole other reason to skate: not for her father, not even for herself, but for the sake of love. Because she was finally ready to love and be loved.
I went to see this in college with some friends, and one was annoyed with the ending. He was all "But why didn't they show who won the gold medal?", and I said "Because that's not what the movie was about." This is a movie I've seen many times, and it never, ever gets old.
The ending reminds me of the first Rocky movie. In that case, Rocky lost the fight, but many people don't even notice, because the important thing has been Rocky and Adrian falling in love. When they tell each other , "I love you", it really doesn't matter who won the fight, or in this movie, who won the gold medal. They're both love stories that take place in a boxing world, or a skating one.
Love this movie. Can't tell you how many times I've watched it and still counting :) Would have loved if we saw the couple win gold and then celebrate back at his brother's pub! Moira was gorgeous in this movie:)

I love this movie so much! I cannot tell you how often I rewatched this specific scene over and over again on VHS. I about wore the tape out with the constant rewinding. lol
Great American movie ,beautiful ending, I have been skating all my life and I tell you movie is right to the bone. Love it great performance by Moria.should of won oscar
Apparently both Kelly and Sweeney were open to doing a sequel but Sweeney said the script was awful and they offered them terrible salaries. Too bad as it would have been great to see the original actors reprise these two characters.

Why is it so difficult to make this kind of good romcom nowadays? A good story with really good looking leads, with great chem
What's worse, is that a whole series of straight-to-DVD sequels followed this movie. Each as terrible and underwhelming as the last.
Good question.
Don't you know??? Because only MEN are allowed to be ToXIC nowadays..
Because Hollywood is to creatively bankrupt and too woke...the Kate character would never be allowed in a movie of today.
