Over 20 yrs of experience, multiple medals multiple disciplines of bmx, plus this is the guy who can put it together with one chance to do it on his last run and win multiple times. USA couldn't have picked a better Coach for the freestyle team.
True, but Nick got injured during practice and idk what the f happened with Justin, but we got our asses handed to us. Admittedly, Logan is one of the best in the business, and he earned his gold, but if Nick hadn't gotten injured, we may have stood a chance of not placing subterranean type low. I was hoping Sandoval would have gone because him and Nick are top of the game here, but Justin is super talented and earned his spot. He went because he deserved to. I just wish at least one of our riders would have had a good showing. We showed up with a top of the line red-headed coach and got beat like the red-headed step child. X.x
Anyone else remember the Keith Terra / Nyquist drama? I wanna say 97-98 era. Hilarious, they even made "i hate Terra/Nyquist" t-shirts! Pre social media life was awesome, i mostly miss magazines. Ride was my bible as a kid.
Loved seeing Ryan re-create that vintage Jason Enns clip. Would love to see more of that. So fun to see riders looking back at the past and playing around with those tricks.
I don't think anyone has been better for BMX. Always so interesting to here "stories from ryan". You could make that a weekly clip. Dude could tell endless stories. So good
This was absolutely fascinating. Loved hearing about Miracle Boy and Nyquist and the Mirra stuff was really enlightening too. Ryan is so articulate and honest and I can’t wait for part II. Amazing job Dennis and Fudger
Ryan is my idol..... i'm a 83 kid..... i have never been so emotional watching a youtube vid...... the love of just riding made me ball my eye's out.... reprezent..... i wish my boy had the passion you do i cant even deal.... or whatever the kids these days say.... so much old skool cool..............
My grandpa taught at Cal Poly for 35 years he was department head of Agriculture Engineering in a teacher that's so cool that you went there my mom went there too
If there's a part 2 you gotta talk about that period back when it seemed like every kid had a Haro Mirra or Backtrail complete... That had to be some serious money.
Nyquist is the man and I am so glad he has been around the sport as long as he has. Really enjoyed his stories and insights to the Miracle Boy & Nyquist era. Great podcast guys, keep it up! This shit gets me through work
My friends and I watched Miracle Boy & Nyquist dozens of times. I think I was 12 or 13. Then we got to see Nyquist at a dirt jumping demo in Virginia Beach during ECSC in the early 00s. Epic days
Pretty sure he has been on since you made that original comment almost a year ago. Actually I'm positive because I remember it was insane to hear his stories.
Matty Cranmer just called Ryan out for a game of no hander as part of a Legends game of bike on Scottys channel. I'd love to see that cause Ryan's the man :-)
Since Justin Dowel is on the podium I think Spencer Foresman should be be somewhere in the camp especially since Nick Bruce is in the podium as well. He's very familiar with both and he has been a camp Woodward teacher for years. I think he'd be the best if someone would allow him in the camp. Not only that he's hilarious so everyone would enjoy him. I really don't see why more people in bmx don't recognize him.
The discussion around guys like Mirra and Nyquist not being accepted by other pros who shunned contests and focused mostly on street riding for video parts is super interesting. I had the opportunity to ride street with a couple of pros back in the day, neither of which were ever anywhere close to Mirra's level, and honestly in those sessions all we could was sit back and watch. There was something exhilarating about watching them, but also something that made the rest of us super self conscious because we weren't pulling anything close to what they could pull. I have to assume the other pros watching Mirra during a Road Fools trip had to feel something like that - psyched but also self conscious because Mirra was someone who could crush any street spot and then go win X Games gold, and not many guys have ever ridden at that level (or even close to it). And I can only imagine young, immature BMXers who are usually the best riders around don't do well with insecurity when a guy like Mirra shows up.
I love Nyquist and know him and have ridden with him several times, but damn he and Mirra were petty with each other. That's what's so lame about being so competitive in the bmx world. Happy for Nyquist's success and longevity in the sport and have followed him since his few clips in Barspinner's Soil video . ha. Haven't touched my bike in years but the memories will never die!
Amazing interview. So cool to hear some Miron stuff. On the desk at Hoffman's one day, Miron said to me, "Never be afraid to suck" I thought, well said. I dropped in and did my tiny go trick. A disaster.
I remember buying Miracle Boy & Nyquist from the Skate shop at A.S.S. skatepark in Toms River, NJ during a 2-Hip jam. I bought that & 2 pairs of UGP Kung Fu grips. lol.
I remember seeing Ryan at Scrap in 95 96?. Orange Bontranger? I was on a family trip from Ohio and begged my dad to take me to see the saketpark I had seen in all the videos. He was already ripping back then. Picked up a sweet Standard Bykes beanie if anyone remembers those from 95.
I did an audio-only (podcast) Unclicked back in 2019. Most of it is focused on the death-of-RideBMX news at the time, but there's some other stuff in there for sure.
whoooooo yeah baby I've been waiting for this one. thank you for bringing light to Dave. The road fools thing was jim celinski talking shit but i thought at the end they all changed their mind on dave. Im 35, im prime age for the boom, my wall was all posters of these guys. Thank you for this
It takes someone’s death for others to realize their shit is petty. What was the beef? He was better than everyone on transitions and made $ outside BMX specific companies?
Crazy to look up some of the stuff y'all are talking about. Vital BMX has a video of "King of Animal House' from 2016 where Dennis gets 1st and Ryan gets 2nd on Mirra's ramp. Also winning with a whip to a huge wall like in is Homecoming edit. Sick.
Just want to correct what was said regarding who participates at the Olympic Games. In Track and field - which you used as an example in the interview - the best athletes in the world compete. The Olympic Games is in many sports the most important competition in their career. How the qualify or get selected to the Games depends on the International Federation, the National Governing Body and in some countries the National Olympic Committee. In Norway for instance the National Governing body sets the criteria. It could be that for an athlete who want to compete in the 800 meter (or javelin) must run faster than a certain time or throw the javelin over a certain distance. In many countries neither the athlete nor the governing body (or the government) want to see their athlete just filling up the results table, they want to bring the medal(s) home. In other sports - like wrestling - there are Olympic Games qualifying events where athletes must be in the top 5 or something to compete at the Olympic Games. Same goes for team sports. Some International federations look at the ranking of each nation on the different continents, other have qualification events and some look at where they ended up in the continent championship (like European Championships) or a combination of both. In BMX Freestyle there are some other criteria and Nyquist explained those in the video.
It's called Curling because the stones make a curl, an arc, when you throw them. They don't move in a straight line. Great sport, you should find a club and try it sometime. There are a couple in the bay area.
You guys need to do a Nic Long episode. I would love to see a closer connection between racing and freestyle. So many started in racing and I think Nic could bridge the gap!! #allbmxisgoodbmx
Mirra did what Tiger Woods did to golf. Only a few years after Tiger was pro, the average salary in the PGA nearly tripled. The average pro got sponsors much easier. Everyone benefits.
