gotta be honest, I never read the whole plot twist with Rex as a criticism of masculinity, but of maturity. Rex is the "edgy mature" while Emmett is the "real mature". Both me and my sister independently guessed that Rex was evil Emmet from the future and Lego fiends were secretly the “good guys” but dismissed it thinking it would be a dumb plot twist
I never got the message of masculinity in this literally just thought it was about letting a younger sibling play with you even if it's the most annoying thing in your childhood.
It’s genuinely sad that these films basically went the way of image movers digital after their last film, Lego movie 2 couldn’t make bank at the box office, maybe if they had spread them out better people would’ve felt less fatigued with them, but regardless the fond memories these films I will forever cherish, and I hope the films made at universal can work out just as well.
9:59 wildstyle saying “I hope we aren’t in a musical as a terrible number plays has the same energy as “you can’t hurt my feelings if Im in on the joke” Sonic
I feel like this movie is what a child thinks the original movie was. Also, what I realized about Phineas and Ferb as an adult is that I didn’t hate the first couple songs in the show…later seasons were when they started cramming them in.
For the political side i didn't even know there was a political message about gender biases and toxic masculinety, I just saw Rex as holding a grudge on his friends which in the real life would be his sister 💀
I dont even believe in toxic mascuIinity as they're just talking about bad behaviour since if a woman behaved like this and yes theres plenty who do, no one screams toxic femininity do they. This is coming from a group who says you should express yourself as you are but hate men expressing themselves as mascuIine but are fine with feminine men (sometimes women) and mascuIine women smh
Fun fact: Part of the marketing for this movie was putting adds on random videos, where they would show a voice actor from the movie begging people not to skip it, and then they would just show the first movie again. Not only does the average person not like adds, making adds where people in them beg you not to skip even more annoying than normal (especially since these adds were over an hour long), but just showing the first movie again I imagine created this feeling of "They don't have any faith in this movie to do well on its own, so they're just showing the first movie again to get us into theaters" which I imagine didn't give people confidence about the sequel's quality. Also, this movie was released during either January or February (I forget exactly when), and those times are the worst for movies to try and be successful because less people are in the theaters. Studios purposely release movies that they have no faith in during those months because they don't think that anyone will see them. I really liked this movie when I first watched it, and while it's message of "Maturity is not derived from the content of your work, but the themes and messages that you put into it" still resonates with me, you brought up a lot of really good points here. Great video!
The lego Ninjago movie is really strange. It spoils just about every major plot twist in the original show like it's nothing, sometimes to an insensitive degree, despite the final product being meant for an audience that has likely never seen the show. It also reduces most of the characters to their basic personality traits, and sometimes just turns them into new characters that share a name with the original.
@Niyaz Kaan Dağçınar wait how is Garmadon's four arms spoilers? I recall even in the beginning of the franchise there was a lego figure that showed him with four arms.
The only thing I like about the LEGO Movie 2 is that Rex’s job description is a combination of Chris Pratt’s other prior major movie roles such as Star Lord and Owen Grady.
I wish that there were Lego Sets of Darth Talon, Jaina Solo, and Mara Jade Skywalker in Lego Film 2 and the newest Lego Star Wars video game because those female Star Wars characters are my most favorite female Star Wars characters.
I regret not buying red Unikitty (or whatever that version of the character is called, I don't recall the set number either) as it was on store shelves 4 years ago.
The first movie's fourth wall break was good, because it's the twist at the end where you realize the world is just some kid playing with his dad's legos, with Emmet moving around as a bit of humor, but in the sequel, the idea of "oh look it's kids playing with legos" is shoved in your face to try and be super meta. It doesn't even feel like a lighthearted stop motion movie, it just feels like a family drama with computer generated Legos added in. Also, it's just dumb how they went from "the kids control the legos" to "they all have a mind of their own and can move without anyone knowing like in toy story", completely going against the logic established in the first movie.
I liked the real-world portions. I didn't feel there were too many as the ones shown were just progressing the story. Also we know from the first movie, that it takes place in the real world and everything is just Finns imagination, I liked that they incorporated that as you can't just ignore it until the end like they did in the first movie because it's not a twist anymore. They know we know this, so just use it.
they dont have a mind of their own, you didnt quite get the full plot, the story is told from the future kids, they were aware of times characters went "out of bounds" and both kids decided to make that event cannonical for the lego creatures, with them even experiencing some kind of time dilation if outside lego surfaces, implying that the lego creatures experience their own imaginary version of general relativity, and this is all shown in the movie throught the kids perspectives(imagination)
@@Saturno-h2m How do you explain Emmet moving around on his own on Will Ferrell's desk in the first film? You can write off other instances of the minifigs moving around as the kid's imaginations, but Will Ferrell hears Emmet trying to bounce off the table a couple of times. My theory is that imagination is so strong, it can create parallel universes where the Lego minifigs live kind-of real lives that are directly influenced by our world and the kids that made it. If the kids decide that a character travels/is transported to the "real world", then they will actually get transported there and can move around, but with great difficulty that requires practice. They can only go back to their universe if the kids decide they will return as part of the story through the power of imagination.
@@matthewcarey5243 thats a pretty good theory, my theory is that the boy in the first movie "accidentally" dropped emmet to thicken emmets plot, and later on imagined emmet going back on its own with his new powers(which is just the boy being really good at building with legos) and in my theory the boy made it seem like emmet was doing that all by himself, like i said the story seems to be told from thr future in both movies, so it would make sense the kid would want to fit in the story that the characters had a mind of their own just so it is still cannon, despite all theories we know that this kid is a genius and hes got a really good imagination lol
My theater experience for Lego Movie 2 involved dozens of kids in the seats, with none of them interested and barely any laughs during the film. Even my kid was a tough crowd for the movie's bad jokes.
It’s so weird to me that the movie tried to make it seem like the side that literally invaded and destroyed their whole civilization are the good guys, and portrays them as a utopian society, and that anything that is darker, more mature, or masculine is actually bad for some reason. Like I would understand if it was just about sending a message about playing with younger siblings, but in that case shouldn’t they have made the younger sister more sympathetic instead of demonizing the brother.
That's not what the movie was trying to portray. Bianca regularly destroyed Finns playsets when they were younger, which is part of why he stopped playing with her. Then, as Bianca got older and understood what she did wrong, she tried again to play but isn't able to communicate that well (Not evil). It's not about toxic masculinity but on how you grow up doesn't have to be edgy and dark, but by being open and kind is what makes someone mature/tough.
The entire movie just comes across as pro imperialism, they even made them minidolls, a different race to come and pillage, destroy, and force them to adopt their culture, steal their land and force them all into tiny identical houses. An exact 180 on the original, which was about breaking free from conformity under lord Business.
You put my thoughts on the pacing and jokes into words when I couldn’t come up with a coherent sentence. And I didn’t realize how odd everyone was to just kick Emmet out when he saved them half a decade before. I get he put them in danger but that was legit a mistake and Lucy could’ve just easily covered the house up with spikes to look edgy if she didn’t like it so they won’t get caught. The characters aside from Lucy and Emmet felt so 1-2 dimensional. The first lego movie at least had something going on with characters like Unikitty and Benny even if it’s just minimal.
I love the sequel just as much as the first, the only problem I had with it was everyone blaming Emmet for everything that went bad, now sure it was kinda his fault for accidentally letting Sweet Mayhem in the bunker, but he had no idea his friends were going to get kidnapped, at least the cat lady didn´t entirely blame him though so credits to her, and yeah he also destroyed the cake and caused Armamagedon, but he was just trying to save his friends who he thought were brainwashed, plus he was manipulated by Rex into thinking it, so it´s hard to really fault him for that (looking at you Lucy), speaking of Lucy, she´s the reason why Rex exists in the first place and the duplo war starting, don´t get me wrong I liked her in this movie and how they showed more of her character, but it did bother me a bit how she blamed Emmet for Armamagedon happening, granted she did apologize for changing him so all is well, in conclusion and I have said this ¨planty¨ of times before in many comment sections, Emmet needs a therapist.
@@KaminoKatie That would have been interesting, if that was the case then she would have been trying to pass her own prejudiced views onto Emmet, who sees the Duplos as equals.
I just realized your lore is a deliberate parody of other reviewers who use lore. Instead of working the movie into the lore like the nostalgia critic does, yours is disconnected entirely. That's so funny. It makes me appreciate your humor more!
I recently rewatched the Lego Movie, and it was so good, I could never look at the 2nd one the same way again. It has that “we couldn’t get the same directors back so we tried to copy what they did last time” feel to it. Nothing can top the first movie.
I love this video not just pointing important point to the problem in lego movie 2, but also dumbvilles apologize directly to his sister because of Lego, that's very wholesome
For some reason this comment remind me of a review of Into the Spider-Verse, where the reviewer called it "it's like a The Lego Batman Movie, but better".
Personally I enjoyed it when I watched it even if it was a step down in quality. But when I rewatched the Lego Batman movie last year I had to stop watching it with my brother cause he said it was really boring and honestly I felt that way as well. I’m not sure if rewatching it would be in favor of this movie since you brought up some good points but I guess I’ll have see some day.
The fact that I genuinely didn’t even know there was a sequel until this review came out about it is both mind boggling and very fitting to the tone of this franchise.
Imagine how I felt when my parents asked if I wanted to see it, 20 minutes before a showing started. Very surreal hearing about Lego Batman and Ninjago for a couple months beforehand then just showing up to the sequel out of nowhere.
There's a part in this movie where they try to say Emmet didn't do shit in the first movie and stole all the credit from Wyldestyle and I felt so insulted. Like, bro I saw the first movie. I know what happened.
Si fue malo que dieran a entender que lucy hizo todo el trabajo además que todos culpaban a emmet cuando el fue el que los salvo en la primera película
I actually love how they made Rex literally just Owen Grady but absurdly over-the-top. We better see a plumber in the Lego Movie 3 voiced by Chris Pratt
This movie felt like it was going along being written by one guy then halfway through someone else with a totally different story idea took over and wrote his story
The first movie was and still in my top 5 best movies, of all time. Not only because of nostalgia, but because the pacing is great, characters: great, story: great. This was the first time, I could feel emotions for a toy brand. Despite what it was originally intended: a full-length commercial. Edit: I was 3 years old when this came out and I still cherish the original
I agree with this. Lego movie 1 is my favorite movie of all time, and 2 just took everything out of it, no charm, emotion, just a lackluster story with a basic plot
You can say what you want about LEGO Movie 2, but in my opinion, unlike the Chip and Dale movie, I thought it had a consistent story that somewhat made sense at least.
Even as a kid when I first saw the first one, I loved it so much that I pretty much memorize most of the dialogue back then. And I couldn’t remember a single thing about the 2nd one when I saw it.
Seriously though since my dad what's sometimes mention it just to annoy my younger sister and I definitely didn't remember it since I forgot this was the movie it came from.

Actually, I can defend the Queen's musical number (not the dialogue preceding it, but the song itself and why its in the movie.): IIRC, this song is meant to make the queen seem like the bad guy, being in line with a villain song, but for a twist non-villain. It also was meant to push the idea Rex was going to help Emmet, rather than betray everyone. The song was meant to push the red herring antagonist, which I personally think is a neat plot device, despite the obvious flaws you mentioned.
I thought the point of the song was "The song is from a smaller child (the little sister) trying to convey sincerity to a the older brother that has become aware of, well, the world that is a far less ideal place that it ought to be, so in both of their heads, the same song plays, and to a literallist idealistic person, somewhat naive, it sincerely tries to connect and convey sincerity, while the other more jaded person sees these awkward but sincere attempts at sincerity as blatant lying." Copied this from someone.
If you're not a fan of musicals, I don't know if you can judge it, but as one I'd say the numbers (song sequences) are pretty good in this. I especially love the queens first song, it's so dumb in concept and so funny in execution, especially once she turns out to be good in the end. It's the most needlessly suspicious song ever, and it just works for me. Heck, the songs were the best part, because this movie certainly lost a lot of important stuff from the original in other respects.
I like how you’ve been referring to the klonoa series when it comes to how stories talking about loss, change, acceptance, or even friendships can be done especially in a well meaning and well written way for children that can rival more Mature media talking about the same things.
i'll be real. i absolutely LOVE the first movie. i COMPLETELY even forgot there was a sequel until right now, finding this video, and i saw it in theaters when i was 27. that's how much of an impression it left on me

Seriously though it says it was released in 2019 so depending on the time I would have been either 13 or 14 and I'm 18 now and obviously I've changed since then but I remember sitting in the theater not liking it all that much and being disappointed and considering I've basically forgot about it until I saw this video I could definitely tell I didn't like it.

Unlike Ralph 2 though Lego Movie 2 is a way better movie. Ralph 2 is one of the worst Disney films ever made especially compared to Spider-Verse released in the same short lived era of mediocrity and sequelitis.
Nah, Ralph breaks the internet completely assassinated Ralph's character and turned him into a bumbling man child who is obsessed with a little candy girl and throws a tantrum when he has no money for a part on ebay, not to mention how sugar rush was 2 player in the first movie but it was turned into a one player game in Ralph breaks the internet because the plot wouldn't make any sense if they didn't retcon such a minor important detail That movie is just... Let's just pretend it never existed, I'll commend the Lego movie 2 for being actually fun to watch and having a plot that is while dumb, makes total sense if you remember that it's one giant argument between edgy tween and a six year old
I've waited five years for a sequel, as a fan of the first film I was certainty disappointed, and now four years later I still wonder how much they messed up. At least the film gave us more of Annie as Unikitty and Betty Brant as Wyldstyle. (A plus for any fan of Community and Raimi Spider-Man)
I feel like if they had made WyldStyle to be bigoted towards other types of LEGO, it could've been a pretty atp metaphor for the edgy to alt-right pipeline
Dude, this movie came out on my birthday, and when it came out on DVD I watched it religiously literally every goddamn day with my nephew the first one was so baller the first movie holds a huge place in my memory to this day, but the second one was not so good.
I used to really dislike the lego movie when it first came out (i was 5/6 and my little brother constantly sang the theme song and it drove me me mad) but i rewatched it recently and realized its a pretty good movie!! So imagine my surprise when the 2nd one was. . Not really good
The Lego Movie was one of several movies that really did not need a sequel. As a kid I never gave two craps about the duplo characters at the end, they went completely over my head, the only reason I remember them now is because they lead to the tragedy that was the 2nd movie. I honestly would’ve never thought about those duplo characters ever again until later on in my life, but even then I would’ve thought “Oh it has an open end, that’s pretty cool” not “I think we need to have a second movie to explain this” Also the 1st movie had a better video game, the 2nd lego movie video game sucks absolute booty, argue with the wall.
Seriously though the duplo invasion at the end was a joke and there wasn't a need for a sequel and we're all tired of getting low quality cash grab sequels for everything and probably would just like to see more stand-alone good movies instead of getting low quality sequels that affect the quality of the original movie.
17:15 I am free to take criticism but I kind of disagree with your point here. The whole point of the Systar Sytstem characters is that they are being protrayed through the eyes of the younger sister who was probably a toddler when she first started destroying the brother's stuff. It's an allegory for the conflict between siblings and how they usually aren't good at communicating with each other. I don't have a problem with their idea being stupid because these are decisions being made by a literal 8 year old.
I remember seeing the original in theraters as a kid and it blew my mind, and had such an impact on me. With the sequel I pretty much forgot the plot in 2 weeks XD!
2 weeks is pretty quick and dear God The Lego movie 2 has basically been forgotten about in my mind for at least 3 years until I saw this video and then remembered it again and it all just proves how forgettable it is.
It's also shocking since my sister who's 6 years younger than me who would constantly re-watch movies I don't think ever re-watched The Lego movie 2 and heck we have the DVD but I swear I only watched it once and that was in theaters.
I feel like your thoughts on stories approaching morals are something I can learn from. What if you have a clear idea for a moral, but it’s simple, so you don’t need to harp on it too much? For instance, let’s say that you want to make a movie that says “something about you that you see as a weakness can be a strength”, and this can be demonstrated by having a character with a “lame power” who uses it creatively to come out on top, the whole film doesn’t have to be people talking about, you don’t even have to bring it up in dialogue. What might you say about that? Sorry about this lengthy comment!
At first, I thought The LEGO Movie 2 was an enjoyable movie that just so happened to not be as enjoyable as the first movie, but that one plot twist that stated that the bad guys aren’t actually the bad guys the whole time, in spite of the Duplo aliens destroying the entirety of Bricksburg just left an extremely sour taste in my mouth, and had actually got me rethinking some things about the second film as a whole.
The bomb hearts saying things like "Hello", "I love you" and genuinely being nice and giving compliments is because Bianca just wants to play with Finn. But from Finns perspective, Bianca is destroying everything and shes not trying too, but Finn sees it as an attack. The Queens song "Not Evil" is essentially the sister saying, "Please let me play with you. I promise I won't mess anything up" and giving Finns lego some stuff as an apology and gesture of peace, and Finn not trusting her or giving her a chance. Emmet's world is a representation of the brother's imagination, and to him, his annoying sister is the embodiment of evil, but all she wants to do is play.
It's always gonna be quite a day when Dumbsville uploads. But The Lego Movie 2 truly was one of the movies of all time, it even had "some moments I guess."
I saw this in theaters with my 100 family members when it come out, and there was this kid sitting a couple chairs to the left and I KID YOU NOT when the women Legos were revealed to not be evil he was ON HIS KNEES CRYING AND SHAKING HE. WAS. DEFEATED. at women NOT being the evil in this movie. R.I.P L'il homie.
8:35 I see you like Holy musical Batman from Starkid. Good choice! It is a funny and excellent story with creative songs and a cool villain. Sweet tooth is the joker if he loved candy plus he always make puns; it's hilarious 😂
at first I was worried this video would make me a bit sad (given that while I do think the first movie was better, I also got attached to this one) but I think you made me realize that Emmet is literally the one thing I loved about the movie - and by extension, Rex 😭 it's definitely upsetting how he's just treated like shit throughout the entirety of it with barely any pay-off??? Not to mention the evil traumatized version of him just kinda dies instead of getting a second chance, which Business somehow got instead, even less rightfully so. And speaking of Business, his and the Cops' complete and utter absence in this movie were definitely strange...
Emmet being treated badly kinda makes sense as Emmet and Rex represent Finn, and he wants to grow up and sees his tounger self aka Emmet as someone weak and needs to change as he's "grown up". They did say in the movie for the time travel thing to work. Rex had to disappear as Finn is now choosing to be Emmet and Rex existing would be a paradox. Lord Business is the dad. He said, "Everyone get along, boom fixed it, I'm going golfing. You guys can fix this among yourselves. " Leaving as soon as the kids were fighting and returning as soon as they calmed down is such a Dad move.
I watched and liked the first film but did not know about the sequel till seing a youtube video covering its lego game and mostly forgot about the existance of it until this vid
Tbh i don't think the second movie was that bad, it definitely wasn't great compared to the original, but i feel like Phil Lord and Chris Miller still can make me have a good time watching things they work on despite the quality. To me i think there are some better qualities that this had more that the Ninjago Movie since that movie felt way to fast paced and mean spirited from what i remember and that this one still had that heart the other Lego movies did. Also i think the Lego Batman movie is one of the best Lego movie spinoffs ever, it is genuinely a heartfelt movie that deserves more praise that what tik tok is giving it.

Well it was real and not, Emmet was moving on his own at the end without the kid, it’s just that they’re seperated by reality
Both me and my sister independently guessed that Rex was evil Emmet from the future and Lego fiends were secretly the “good guys” but dismissed it thinking it would be a dumb plot twist

I know you’re talking about things like Zane being a robot, nya having water powers, etc, but what else?
@Niyaz Kaan Dağçınar wait how is Garmadon's four arms spoilers? I recall even in the beginning of the franchise there was a lego figure that showed him with four arms.
@Niyaz Kaan Dağçınar Oooooooo I remember now. Yeah I guess that counts. Although it always just felt right you know?
I mean it does not really turn them into completely new characters but it is a odd movie.
@niyazkaandagcnar8863 Nah it was already really fun.
The only thing I like about the LEGO Movie 2 is that Rex’s job description is a combination of Chris Pratt’s other prior major movie roles such as Star Lord and Owen Grady.
kinda bad that they didn't make more sets for lego movie 2 because some of the character designs were actually cool looking

Chris Miller and Phil Lord didn't direct this film, only produced it, and it very clearly shows.
The Lego Movie 2 - How To Kill A Franchise
Didn't know the Lego Movie 2 was about the god damn Iraq War.
@@gtd5626 So Bianca was a psychopath?
@attackerangel2951 What? No. How? All she wanted to do was play with her brother.
I think in a way them kicking Emmet out makes sense. Finn=Emmet and he wants to try and "grow up" by being tough/mature.
I feel like they should've made Lucy be bigoted towards other types of LEGO
@@KaminoKatie That would have been interesting, if that was the case then she would have been trying to pass her own prejudiced views onto Emmet, who sees the Duplos as equals.

Actually, I can defend the Queen's musical number (not the dialogue preceding it, but the song itself and why its in the movie.):
IIRC, this song is meant to make the queen seem like the bad guy, being in line with a villain song, but for a twist non-villain. It also was meant to push the idea Rex was going to help Emmet, rather than betray everyone. The song was meant to push the red herring antagonist, which I personally think is a neat plot device, despite the obvious flaws you mentioned.
Did you like the song tho
@@viewused4116 I liked it lol
@@viewused4116 Its ok. Not the best villain song out there, not the worst.
I thought the point of the song was "The song is from a smaller child (the little sister) trying to convey sincerity to a the older brother that has become aware of, well, the world that is a far less ideal place that it ought to be, so in both of their heads, the same song plays, and to a literallist idealistic person, somewhat naive, it sincerely tries to connect and convey sincerity, while the other more jaded person sees these awkward but sincere attempts at sincerity as blatant lying." If you're not a fan of musicals, I don't know if you can judge it, but as one I'd say the numbers (song sequences) are pretty good in this.

This movie is like Ralph Breaks the Internet where I just pretend it doesn’t exist
Unlike Ralph 2 though Lego Movie 2 is a way better movie. Ralph 2 is one of the worst Disney films ever made especially compared to Spider-Verse released in the same short lived era of mediocrity and sequelitis.
The only thing that should be considered cannon are Felix and Calhoun adopting the sugar rush racers.
Nah, Ralph breaks the internet completely assassinated Ralph's character and turned him into a bumbling man child who is obsessed with a little candy girl and throws a tantrum when he has no money for a part on ebay, not to mention how sugar rush was 2 player in the first movie but it was turned into a one player game in Ralph breaks the internet because the plot wouldn't make any sense if they didn't retcon such a minor important detail
That movie is just... Let's just pretend it never existed, I'll commend the Lego movie 2 for being actually fun to watch and having a plot that is while dumb, makes total sense if you remember that it's one giant argument between edgy tween and a six year old

I used to really dislike the lego movie when it first came out (i was 5/6 and my little brother constantly sang the theme song and it drove me me mad) but i rewatched it recently and realized its a pretty good movie!! So imagine my surprise when the 2nd one was. . Not really good
20:24 Dumbs PLEASE bring your sister for a review video PLEASE LOL.
The Lego Movie was one of several movies that really did not need a sequel. As a kid I never gave two craps about the duplo characters at the end, they went completely over my head, the only reason I remember them now is because they lead to the tragedy that was the 2nd movie. I honestly would’ve never thought about those duplo characters ever again until later on in my life, but even then I would’ve thought “Oh it has an open end, that’s pretty cool” not “I think we need to have a second movie to explain this”
Also the 1st movie had a better video game, the 2nd lego movie video game sucks absolute booty, argue with the wall.
Only good thing is the moral lesson it's rare those days

Is that supposed to make it good??? It doesn't matter what the point was, it is still shit.

Thanks!

15:47 Dumbsville spitting bars.
I watched and liked the first film but did not know about the sequel till seing a youtube video covering its lego game and mostly forgot about the existance of it until this vid
9:30 heartbreak, heartbreak, from persona 4 plays. Is Dumbsville a persona fan confirmed???
We're never going to forget about the lore in these videos
Lego movie one was avtually a masterpiece.the second one feels like the kind of movie Disney would port straight to DVD/home movie like lion king 2
So in other words, good.
At least the Lion King 2 is actually good.
@@traviscunningham7062 Actually, Lego Movie 2 is perfect, Lion King 2 was just decent.
I remember I really wanted emmet to succeed in destroing that world and was really dissapointed when he failed to do that.
I asked my family to go see the LEGO Movie 2 when it came out, and I felt embarrassed because of how bad it was
Tbh i don't think the second movie was that bad, it definitely wasn't great compared to the original, but i feel like Phil Lord and Chris Miller still can make me have a good time watching things they work on despite the quality.
I can’t believe Dumbsville, Mr. Lego ObiWan, is FINALLY talking about Lego.
This editing is so fast paced it legitimately hurt to sit through
I find it absolutely hilarious Lego would be the one to shame their core audience for liking broody things.
