Yes, Beyoncé's growl is something she's clearly spent some time perfecting. Its among the healthiest sounding distortion I've ever heard. It's like a filter she can put on and take off at will to color her voice and she can do it for days. If you're going to do a 'versus' video, you should bear in mind that pitting female performers against each other has long been a rich seam of mindless filler for lazy journalists and avaricious media executives, who perceive in the public a general craving for 'bitch fights'; and ask whether that is a tradition to which you want to contribute, or critique? Taylor has won four AOTY while Beyonce is yet to win her first, that is true, but it is not Taylor's fault. In terms of head-to-heads, I think there has only been one year that they were both in contention, which was when Taylor's Fearless beat out Beyonce IV. What we saw there, I believe, was a general enthusiasm for a young female singer-songwriter emerging from the country stable and making the jump into the pop mainstream, in terms of appeal, if not yet in style. The other times when Beyonce was widely tipped for the win were 2017, when Lemonade was beaten by Adele's 25, and last year, when Renaissance lost out to Harry's House. These were arguably much more egregious losses than the one to Taylor. In general terms, the Grammy voters are seen by many to be reluctant to give the marquee prizes to black musicians. If so, that is a systemic problem within the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and also nationally, one might argue, in America. On the other hand, both albums were handily outsold by the victors, and the Grammys often follow the money rather than the critics. Jayzee pointed out that Beyonce is the most awarded artist in Grammy history, having 32 wins from 88 nominations (he ties his wife in terms of nominations btw). He sees this as a problem, but if so, there are worse problems to have. Perhaps it's a problem of genre? Beyonce has stuck to her R&B guns, artistically, and all credit to her for that; but half of the time my cloth British ears have no idea wtf she's singing about, and I'm not really a fan of rap / hip-hop (for much the same reason). So I tend to get much more out of watching Beyonce perform rather than just listening to her. Seeing her on stage is an overwhelming experience, and even her videos are so exquisitely made that often they take my breath away. But would I sit and listen to a whole album? It's like the difference between listening to an entire opera on record, and experiencing it live in the theatre - same singers, same musicians, same conductor, same production even, but the lstter is so much more engaging than the former. By comparison, few Taylor Swift videos have added a great deal to my appreciation of her songs; in fact, I often find them a bit cringe. And although I can see that she puts on a good show in her concerts, and has improved greatly as a live performer, that has come about through graft rather than her innate gifts as a performer. To this day, there is something stiff and studied about her on stage, which is charming in its way, and props to her for putting in the work - but she is not Beyonce. However, her apparent ordinariness is one of her superpowers, when allied to her gifts for storytelling, and her lyricism. She is a great songwriter, telling stories that are very personal and specific, while being almost universally accessible, engaging and relatable. There is a kind of simplicitty to her music, a directness perhaps that is in fact very dificult to achieve, the art that conceals art. They are very different artists, and if there is anything to be learnt from comparing them, it is not that one is better than the other.
