Crayster My name is David and I was wondering, why don't stock the Creeks with shellcracker bream and large or smallmouth Bass or even spotted bass? And any type of fish to feed on crawfish.
I remember going down to the muddy creek as a kid and spending the whole day catching crayfish and then going home in the evening and having a feast.....I loved those days
Go to KFC get a family bucket of chicken original season the night before. Eat all the chicken but save some skin and all the bones use this and watch them run in your traps. P.S. it don't hurt ta leave a little meat on them bones... have fun
I go to a bridge over Fossil Creek and free dive in about 20 feet of clear water at night with a flash light. Me and another guy can pull up a couple hundred craw fish, caught by hand in about an hour or so. We boil em up at camp and dip there tail in butter. That is some good eating. I know the lakes on the rim have a fair population of crawfish but the never seem like a problem, the stream they were at has more than I have ever seen up there. I wouldnt mind heading up and doing my part to help remove them.

Those minnows that they’re concerned about staying in the water are most likely the more invasive carp! Every single minnow that works it’s way into my traps are carp. Very rarely do I see Frye from native or sport fish guess it depends on time of year and location.. I’m also in south eastern AZ so I could be wrong about their minnow species but that’s what I usually get in mine. And I absolutely do not release them. They’re equally as bad as the crawfish and at least we can harvest the Crays! 😋
This is good to know that all species of Crayfish are Non Native to Arizona. Where,I live in Europe and the USA Crawfish are considered a good part of the eco system. In Arizona crawfish are considered a detriment. Such a state is a place I would not consider moving to. Thanks for the information Mike, it's good to know.

if your in the united states they are ANYWHERE in just about any waterway....look up ways to catch on youtube and get busy , its simple and very easy....make some wire traps , use dead fish and guts and haul em in...from april til june or july depending on where you live .

yooper, I grew up Texas country and the crawdads came out after a heavy rain or flood. We caught them with a strip of bacon. We just dangled it over the water and the crawdads caught the bacon and we took them off the bacon and plunked them in a deep bucket. You have to be careful after you catch them. They can crawl out of nearly everything. We never used a trap and never heard of a crawdad trap. They are good eating.
you need a righteous trap to catch those bugs. we made traps from PVC well casing material. schedule 80. very durable hard use traps we fished in the Willamette watershed in Oregon. about two feet long, a tunnel at each end, and a little door on the side held closed with a rubber band and a hook. the tunnels were attached with stainless hog rings. if you put a few in that creek those girls were playing in they'd likely come up stuffed the next day. we baited with cooked oatmeal. i figure a piece of bacon added where you are at there would help too. we never tried it as the oatmeal worked really good on its own.
"Invasive Species"?! Huh? That's like saying gold on your land is a toxic heavy metal. Maybe the problem is that they don't offer Cajun seafood boil at supermarkets there in AZ. (Here in Houston, grocery stores are charging as much as $5 a pound for those little boogers, and customers are waiting in line to buy them.) Do people in AZ even know about adding red potatoes, onions, corn on the cob, and sausage links to the boil? I think with a little edible eating education (e.g., suck the head and pinch the tail), AZ's invasive species "problem" could be solved in a few weekends, even sooner with several local "Crawfish Festivals". However, AZ may run into another problem. With a trend toward everyone now wanting to dip spicy Cajun crawdads in melted butter, some may reseed their waterways with the tasty culinary crustacean critters, and the state of AZ all of sudden becomes the southwest's version of the Louisiana Atchafalaya Bayou.
Dragon, all you need is a piece of bacon tied on a string, hold it over the water and the crawdads grab and hold on to the bacon. You can catch a bucket full of crawdads on one piece of bacon and one string.

There is a group that does a crawfish boil here in Arizona once in a while. They get together and fish some of the reservoirs. I would love to volunteer with them sometime, but I don't have a boat, and I don't catch many from the shore. I'm looking forward to Mike cooking some this summer.

An invasive species is an introduced species, one that has few or no predators and upsets the natural balance and overwhelms the environment at the cost of, or eliminating the native species. I cooked them once and no one ate them. My camp stove can't really get hot enough to boil water. So we donate them instead of just killing them on site. I often give away the big ones to other folks in exchange for their small ones.

Honey child give me them there Crayfish and I will cook them in some beer and lemon juice with garlic and scallions and sausages with corn and have a FEAST. I introduced some Crayfish to my friends in Puerto Rico during the aftermath of Hurricane Maria and we had a Field Day eating them. Great with some Snow CRABS legs. You can catch the big ones at night. We I was in the States we would leave our nets in the river overnight and catch some Colossal size Crayfish. But we call them CRAWFISH. I'll bring the kids from my neighborhood down there and clean out the river of the Crayfish and then we will most DEFINITELY eat them all!
This spot where we filmed is now the location of the "Tinder Fire." Most of the forest leading down to the the stream has been burned. Someone left an unattended campfire.
Wait tell next July when our team of Field Researchers get there. We are going to put the hurt on that crawfish population. Hey, and at least we are putting in an effort. And it is great for the animals at the conservation center.
Don't think you guys will ever do any real damage to the crawfish population there...I'm from Louisiana and even with as much crawfish as we eat down here.we don't do that much damage to them...also we have plenty of fish in our rivers and lakes..crawfish are good for the fish to eat too..only downfall to crawfish is they did tunnels in the ground to live durring winter months doing damage to shorelines causing erosion..but hey we are Louisiana and erosion is someting we are used to dealing with ..crawfish are great to eat and would make for a wonderful seasonal income for some folks.
LA Shooter not entirely true. Non native crawfish where they don't belong have a tendency to overtake the native crawfish species and displace them. UK has this problem. They have almost no native crawfish and flooded with the American ones.
I fish the Rim all the time, when you have no luck catching fish you boil up some crawfish... sorry to say but these chicks aren't putting much of a dent in anything... it would have to be on a muuuuch grander scale and much higher production than a few traps...

Raccoons love emm they love my huge trophy bass pond that I throw 5 30 lb sacks in every year to feed all the bass and fish I got not invasive in my pond bit wow didn't know they are tearing up the water ways

Let me see if I got this straight, you catch crawdads, trying to make them extinct in your state, then feed the crayfish to the raccoons to train them to eat natural food, while still trying to exterminate the crayfish, and if you successfully do that then the raccoons starve in the wild? does that about sum it up?
We are trying put a dent in the crawfish population, it would be impossible to make them extinct now they are in the water ways. And yes, Laura and Ariel do take some of the crawfish to the wildlife rehabilitation center. The rehabilitation center is very happy to get the wild food. Well, for one thing, we will never make them extinct in our state, as much as we would like to. There will always be plenty of food in the wild for the raccoons. They got along before the crayfish were introduced in the 1940s.

Oh, we know we won't get rid of them. We are just trying to reduce the population in the stream so the native fish can survive. There are several thousand fewer females laying eggs in there now.
They are not a blessing in Arizona. Louisiana fish evolved with crayfish. We have different species of fish here that did not evolve with crayfish. The crayfish have had a big part in damaging the native fish population in Arizona.
Ari Lauriel, our crawdads out on the mesa never damaged the native fish, I suppose because everyone ate the crawdads. I was surprised, very surprised to learn crawdads are considered "bad"!

what do you use for bait? I found that minnow traps with a few dead minnows work amazing to catch crayfish

Its not a zoo, they allow almost no human contact. They do allow them the best chances to go back into the wild.
But if some Arizona streams and rivers crossover into other states, how in the heck can you keep them out?

They are fed to these animals as a method of teaching the animals how to catch and consume prey in the wild.

Hey guys, I've been in AZ for 6 years now and haven't done much fishing. I'm wondering if you need a fishing license to harvest crawfish?

Yes, you do. But there is no limit on your catch. They need to be dead or covered in ice to be transported.

Honey child give me them there Crayfish and I will cook them in some beer and lemon juice with garlic and scallions and sausages with corn and have a FEAST. I introduced some Crayfish to my friends in Puerto Rico during the aftermath of Hurricane Maria and we had a Field Day eating them. Great with some Snow CRABS legs. You can catch the big ones at night. We I was in the States we would leave our nets in the river overnight and catch some Colossal size Crayfish. But we call them CRAWFISH.
I'll bring the kids from my neighborhood down there and clean out the river of the Crayfish and then we will most DEFINITELY eat them all!

There's no way this is an effective method of eradicating crawfish from a body of water.
Wait tell next July when our team of Field Researchers get there. We are going to put the hurt on that crawfish population. Hey, and at least we are putting in an effort. And it is great for the animals at the conservation center.
Don't think you guys will ever do any real damage to the crawfish population there...I'm from Louisiana and even with as much crawfish as we eat down here.we don't do that much damage to them...also we have plenty of fish in our rivers and lakes..crawfish are good for the fish to eat too..only downfall to crawfish is they did tunnels in the ground to live durring winter months doing damage to shorelines causing erosion..but hey we are Louisiana and erosion is someting we are used to dealing with ..crawfish are great to eat and would make for a wonderful seasonal income for some folks.
LA Shooter not entirely true. Non native crawfish where they don't belong have a tendency to overtake the native crawfish species and displace them.
UK has this problem. They have almost no native crawfish and flooded with the American ones.

I fish the Rim all the time, when you have no luck catching fish you boil up some crawfish... sorry to say but these chicks aren't putting much of a dent in anything... it would have to be on a muuuuch grander scale and much higher production than a few traps...

Raccoons love emm they love my huge trophy bass pond that I throw 5 30 lb sacks in every year to feed all the bass and fish I got not invasive in my pond bit wow didn't know they are tearing up the water ways

All the myriad of "real" problems in Arizona...and this is the best you can do? Crawdad "infestation"? With pesky, below-the-radar, insignificant societal problems like poverty, drug abuse, homelessness...I say crap on all those. You all should be commended for battling the scourge of the ages...the dreaded Arizona Crawdad Plague...mankind owes this group an eternal debt of gratitude!

Let me see if I got this straight, you catch crawdads, trying to make them extinct in your state, then feed the crayfish to the raccoons to train them to eat natural food, while still trying to exterminate the crayfish, and if you successfully do that then the raccoons starve in the wild? does that about sum it up?
We are trying put a dent in the crawfish population, it would be impossible to make them extinct now they are in the water ways. And yes, Laura and Ariel do take some of the crawfish to the wildlife rehabilitation center. The rehabilitation center is very happy to get the wild food. This summer we are planning on eating a bunch also. Thanks for your comment.
Well, for one thing, we will never make them extinct in our state, as much as we would like to. There will always be plenty of food in the wild for the raccoons. They got along before the crayfish were introduced in the 1940s.
I know a really good crayfish population management technique that involves a pot of boiling water

The summer rains will have started by July to put out the fires. This particular place has high enough banks that we won't flood.

Lol. That's funny that they are trying to empty the creek of crawfish considering one female will produce around 300 crawfish per year. Great for us down here in Louisiana but I guess not so great for you guys.
Oh, we know we won't get rid of them. We are just trying to reduce the population in the stream so the native fish can survive. There are several thousand fewer females laying eggs in there now.
heathrocksla, I don't think those people in Arizona know what a real blessing is. They think crawdads are "bad".
They are not a blessing in Arizona. Louisiana fish evolved with crayfish. We have different species of fish here that did not evolve with crayfish. The crayfish have had a big part in damaging the native fish population in Arizona.
Ari Lauriel, our crawdads out on the mesa never damaged the native fish, I suppose because everyone ate the crawdads. I was surprised, very surprised to learn crawdads are considered "bad"!

LaughTooHard Woods Canyon and Willow Springs lakes are plum full of crawdads, I had to modify my minnow traps to keep them out.

You are right, but every two we take out is 300 less next year!

I have not been there yet, but I have been told they have been identified as Rusty Crawfish.
Zack says they are northern crayfish, Orconectes virilis.
