Nice video and lovely shots. One point, though. I am a professional lighting camera operator and DOP, working largely for the BBC in the UK. If we shoot a night scene, indeed we do light it to get the right mood and aesthetics and to get to an acceptable illumination level. We do not expose it bright and then bring it down in post. It's almost impossible to judge the look of a scene that way. We light it and expose it to look right, with a LUT if shooting log. Of course, lot's of refinement can be done in grading, but exposure wise, we nail it at the shooting stage. The extra lighting means we can shoot at reasonably low ISO's and shadow noise is not a problem. If matching to ambient light, then of course we light only to a level to get the subject balanced to the background. At home I have both an FX30 and an A6700. They are remarkable cameras and lift APS-C to a new level.
Thank you and thanks for sharing! This is good industry insight! I’d love to learn how to do it with hitting the right exposure at the shooting stage! I’ve tried numerous exposure levels even shooting at middle grey and couldn’t get a good clean shot with the fx30 / a6700. With the fx3, I definitely could but struggling still with the fx30 :(
One key asset is to have an ok monitor, but crucially with a luminence waveform display. That way you know exactly what levels you are recording. Histogram doesn't cut it. Zebras are a pretty reliable way of knowing when you are hitting burn out and really good at getting face tones exposed correctly.
Although the waveform is a great tool, on a small monitors it isvery difficult to read it. Maybe the best exposure tool is the false color or ei color, recently. Nevertheless, in the absence of those tools, since the zebras can be manually set to whatever level you desire, they can be quite a qood asset to know the signal level, albeit partially. And, on the fast run and gun shoots I found them, and maybe false color if I have the time to switch it on and off, more useful then waveform... and quite easier to read.

In an earlier video posted around a year ago you said that in low light you should set the metering tool to highlights only, and then keep the exposure within 0 to +1. Here you set it to +1.7. Hi. Bro id like to know. Ill be new to slog3. Ive seen your video about cine ei but that's a year ago. I wanted to ask about the rec 709. Is it passable to just use the rec 709 and be done with it. Not using the footage for professional work but only for my own. I'll be using it run and gun so i don't want to take time to color grade. And also i want a more filmic look so what can you recommend rec709 or the rec709(800)?
If you’re not colour grading, you can just use PP11 which is S-Cinetone. You just film as you see fit on screen and that’s it! It’s got some great colours off the bat.
i might be one of the specific usecases that needs full frame - what do you think? im filming a lot of raves/ club events with barely any light except for coloured lighting or strobes. do you think the a6700 would handle it well enough or should I go with full frame? (also: the only lenses available for my use case are f2.8 - so I can‘t improve my lenses, meaning I got to improve my body)
I don't have experience with raves or clubs but I assume the FX3 or the a7s3 would be the best cameras for it. 12800 ISO and still get clean footage at f4 is great. I've shot events that did not have that much light and it did quite well.
About the noise reduction, what program did u use for noise? The free davinci noise reduction seems quite bad. Do i need to buy the studio one for it? Thanks
The footage looks so clean in these shots even with an apsc sensor. Other than that, do you have any recommendations on how to edit on Davinci Resolve for someone who hasn't used a professional video editing software
Thank you!! Try to go through blackmagic's free editing and colouring training on their website! It'll give you a solid foundation on the program's capabilities :)
If I want to replace my Sony AX700 with the A6700 when it comes to casual filming of family and travel, basic editing, is it as easy to do or is it better to stick with the camcorder itself?
I have the Sony Fx30 & Sigma 30mm 1.4, how do I get clean image?? I add lights or use natural light mostly with windows, but the background is still noisy, I expose at 1.7 2.0 on m.m
Hi Victor, great video! During your example 1, I saw you make a node for a CST, but it didn't look like you put the CST effect over the node, but just applied a LUT. Am I right about this? I have always dragged the CST effect on to the node, but should I only be applying a LUT instead? Thanks so much.
It has a similar output since I used the official sony lut. Both works using the CST effect or Conversion LUTs (i.e. the Sony REC.709 conversion LUT). So really, it's up to you which one you want to use! CST effect is always neutral but some conversion luts can make your footage look like a certain camera.
Agree with everyone else on here, you're too good at this bro! Lol at the 89.3%. But yes, low light on the FX30 has been good enough for my workflow. You know what I'd like to see a video of? How you nail your white balance in run and gun situations. I know you said you were leaving it at 5600k for travel situations. But are there other instances where you dial in your WB by eye? If so, do you have any tips? Been using AWB for the longest time and have recently been dabbling in setting it myself, but I still need more practice!
Ouuuuu this will be a video on it's own for sure! Three things I look for with white balance are skin tones, white lights, or grey objects. I would suggest filming these on actual 5600k first and then familiarizing yourself with the camera screen and how they project proper colours. Once you know, it's a good reference as to what you should be seeing with adjusted white balance in post. You'll get a good sense of what needs to be cool or warm or what you can push and pull in post! I always recommend the color passport or a grey card but in run and gun, we simply dont have time especially if it's a time constrained documentary!
Would you be able to test out a6700's competitor Fujifilm X-s20, please. Your opinions and matter to me the most. I want to become hobbyist filmmaker in future and that too good at it. I understand fujifilm doesn't bring a lot of views. I'll be buying my first camera in a few months and too much confused between these two. If you can make a video on xs20 it would be great, if not i'll still follow you and be learning from you. 😊
Hey, I'm a fan of your colourgrading videos. Do you think prores 422hq 10bit gives much more options in colourgrading than h264 10bit 422 ~ 200mbps. Like I'm a newbie to all this, have some practise but not much, and I want to know is this really a gamechanger (added to many cameras for last years, fuji xh2/s, lumix s5iix) or the difference is not that big and there is no big point in paying additional hundreds of bucks for it
Two main considerations for it. First is that prores will give you smoother editing experience. Second is that it will be better but not by much especially if your deliverables are only for online!
Honestly ive found at night when shooting weddings its better to just shoot in natural mode and not log as its hard to color footage from night shots and the natural color mode just always looks better
Hi victor! I noticed that on the two sides of the footage the image is a little distorted, did you made it in post to emulate an anamorphic lens, or it is a normal distortion of the sigma 16mm? p.s. I love your work!

And also i want a more filmic look so what can you recommend rec709 or the rec709(800)?
If you’re not colour grading, you can just use PP11 which is S-Cinetone. You just film as you see fit on screen and that’s it! It’s got some great colours off the bat.
@@VictorLaforteza thanks! You deserve more subs!
i might be one of the specific usecases that needs full frame - what do you think?
im filming a lot of raves/ club events with barely any light except for coloured lighting or strobes. do you think the a6700 would handle it well enough or should I go with full frame?
(also: the only lenses available for my use case are f2.8 - so I can‘t improve my lenses, meaning I got to improve my body)
I don't have experience with raves or clubs but I assume the FX3 or the a7s3 would be the best cameras for it. 12800 ISO and still get clean footage at f4 is great. I've shot events that did not have that much light and it did quite well.
Can you tell me what you have your in camera detail level to far as 4k/HD?
-7 if i remember correctly!
@ thanks man so for 4k -7 and HD -7 as well is that what you’re saying?
Awesome work! Love it!
Another masterpiece ! Good job bro !!!
Thanks bro 🙏🏽 much appreciated!
About the noise reduction, what program did u use for noise? The free davinci noise reduction seems quite bad. Do i need to buy the studio one for it? Thanks
It's the same one in the free version I think
The footage looks so clean in these shots even with an apsc sensor.
Other than that, do you have any recommendations on how to edit on Davinci Resolve for someone who hasn't used a professional video editing software
Thank you!! Try to go through blackmagic's free editing and colouring training on their website! It'll give you a solid foundation on the program's capabilities :)
@@VictorLaforteza It was more than helpful
Thank you so much.
hi can you make a video how to colorgrade it? are you using Slog-2?
There’s a few on my channel already! And I shoot slog3
Hi everyone, How is zoom lens compared to prime in sony in aspect of low light videography such as this
Is the 16mm lens your using good for vlogging?
Yep! You can see it in my sigma 16mm video or the a6700 review
If I want to replace my Sony AX700 with the A6700 when it comes to casual filming of family and travel, basic editing, is it as easy to do or is it better to stick with the camcorder itself?
it's easy on this one as well!
I have the Sony Fx30 & Sigma 30mm 1.4, how do I get clean image?? I add lights or use natural light mostly with windows, but the background is still noisy, I expose at 1.7 2.0 on m.m
You can add ambient lighting to fill the shadows / background and bring it down in post
@@VictorLaforteza I have window light coming in to fill shadows, & there lifted, but I still get noisy footage, I shot at 800 & 2500 iso
Do u know if I can get a very similar result with the zv e10? The 10-8 bit diff its really notorious?
Yes but it’ll be hard to get there. Super noisy with slog3 and maybe cine4 or HLG would work but again it’ll be hard to get there
What lens would you recommend for vlogging? I want an ultra wide lens but I can’t find a good one with a low focal length for low light and vlogging.
sigma 16mm 1.4 or viltrox 13mm 1.4
@@VictorLaforteza are there any smaller ones? Just so its more portable for travelling
@@NH-st2uh if you want a fast aperture for low light, it'll always be that size due to the iris needing to be that big.
@@VictorLaforteza Ahh that makes sense, thank you for the help!
no prob! any other questions, just message me on insta!@@NH-st2uh
You're too good at this bro!! Another great vid 👊
Aw shucks man I'm flattered! Thank you. hope this can be useful somehow!
Beautiful footage!!
Another banger🔥
I’m waiting for my a6700 to arrive atm, super excited to put these techniques to the test!!
Thanks man! I'm excited for you to try these!! I hope you'll love the a6700!
There’s plenty in the secondhand market now at a really good price I got mine at $1650 AUD 🙌🏽
Brilliant stuff! Thanks!
what is the font of the two beginning titles "one night... japan," and "shot on... a6700"?
nt wagner
Just got an a6700!! I really can’t wait to start film making But what software are you using to edit? I haven’t edited videos yet and i just need help
DaVinci resolve
Does a6700 also have dual Iso of 2500 as fx30 does?
yes!
what are you using for screen recording sir
Quicktime screen recording
hi can you please tell me what piano piece you used in intro i remember the notes but can't recollect the name.
Traditionally for film interior lights were balanced to 3200k and exterior to 5600.
These are good starting points. Then adjust from there.
@@ChurchWorshipandvideo Thank you! 🙌
man, this is really good advice!
Man! your just amazing! Thank you for always inspiring us!
I appreciate that! Always nice to hear people get inspired by these little videos!!!
Is a good idea to upgrade to a6700 for video?
Im using a6400 right now.
If you have the budget, yes! good upgrade with that 10 bit!
Can I ask why is there blur on the left and right side?
Could be an anamorphic lens effect.
The colours are stunning but what is with side scenes? They are so unsharp and blurry?
Added it in post :)
How did you made the blurry vignette. Looks like the "Sabrina" netflix series
Prism blur on DaVinci resolve !
Agree, but the a6700 costs double the A7C here
That said, you're footage looks soo good. Great work, nice story telling
Yeah, these new cameras are getting more expensive.. inflation and just pricing overall :( thank you for watching! appreciate the comment.
A7c still a great camera for photos but a6700 with that 10 bits we can do miracles in video .
What camera you used for this? ?
A6700
It's literally in the title of the video,
amazing work as always man!!
thank you my dude!! 🙏🏼
Great tips 🙏🏼 definitely gonna try shooting low light with my zve-10 too
try HLG3 and +1 to +1.3 exposure on the zv-e10! works better than slog since it's only 8bit :)
@@VictorLaforteza it is work on A6400 too?
@@ArdanaMindFilms I got the same question :(
@@LaloLalinLalote its work bro, I've tried it
@@ArdanaMindFilms Thank you! I saw your videos and its just what im looking for! Thanks!
would this be similae for the sony a7iv?
yup ! And the a7iv is easier to get low light exposure too
@VictorLaforteza thank you!! is this for slog3? I cannot remember if that was mentioned
@@_rvhi_ yep!
I'll see if I can rent one out! My friend Iamtongue has great videos about it!
Did you shoot on a gimbal or tripod? Or all hand held ?
all hand held for this one! added post stabilization
whats the song you used in the beginning?
I cant remember sorry it's been a while!
Your cinematic video is miles better than most of other youtuber using full frame.
Fx30 also a small beast!
Thank you! That’s a big compliment 🙌🏽
can i achieve the same result with my sony zve10 with the kit lens?
you can but it'll be tough in low light
Honestly ive found at night when shooting weddings its better to just shoot in natural mode and not log as its hard to color footage from night shots and the natural color mode just always looks better
do you shoot in dci resolution?
Sometimes!
This is perfect - thanks
Epic color..... good job
Which luts of yours did you use in the intro??
Film base LUT but this one was graded extensively
Hi victor! I noticed that on the two sides of the footage the image is a little distorted, did you made it in post to emulate an anamorphic lens, or it is a normal distortion of the sigma 16mm? p.s. I love your work!
It’s added in post! The sigma is really clean lens. Sharp too so I wanted that softer anamorphic look!
@@VictorLaforteza Hi Victor!
Can you make a video of how you add the anamorphic look in post? It looks dope!
@@Wherzmario It's just prism blur on davinci resolve!
which one is better in low light? A6700 or Fx30?
both are good. They have the same sensor.
Agreed. I’m good to film at night with my fx30 too.
Both are enough for low light!! I love em!!
Jeez.... What lens did you use for this?
Mostly the sigma 16mm 1.4 and the laowa nano morph 65mm
Love it💡
