As I grow older, I'm starting to realize that America really has some fantastic cuisine... I used to think of American food as pizza and hot dogs, but our Thanksgiving food, Southern food, BBQ, and Seafood are world class.
Yeah and just a pork chop or something and sides, or roast and potatoes. We don't think of it as "American cuisine" because it's just regular home cooked food to us

Minho, the blonde guy sort of makes my heart hurt. he has a bit of melancholy in his eyes and you can see the sincere gentleness of him, and only imagine what he has been through.
The chef in this was adorable, I love how excited and touched he is to share a cultural tradition with people who have never been able to do something like this.
That guy is loving life over in South Korea as a specialty chef Here in Georgia there are 8 BBQ places within 10 miles of my house but korean BBQ is $25 a person
This whole segment just touches your heart ❤ to see friends gathered around giving thanks for such small things that some take for granted. Every time I watch an interview with a North Korean defector, although they have their freedom now they don’t seem 100% happy and I was always confused. When that guy said although he has a good life in South Korea but still enjoyed his life in North Korea I finally realized it’s because their whole life they lived a very simple (unfortunate to us) one. They didn’t have any views on the outside world and they all lived pretty much the same. No competitions, no social media, no insecurities. just very simple lives. I could see why they might miss that old life. I’m glad they were able to expose themselves to the outside world though.
It is hard for North Korean defectors to have "freedom". They spent their lives in North Korea being told how to live and think from birth. It's a huge adjustment for many.
THEY DONT MISS THEIR OLD LIVES... WTF? WHEN YOU'VE BEEN STARVED AND OPPRESSED AND YOUR PEOPLE REMAIN STARVED AND OPPRESSED HOW CAN YOU EVER BE THE SAME PERSON AS SOMEONE WHOS NEVER LIVED THAT LIFE. HOW INSULTING OF A COMMENT. ALSO ASIAN CULTURAL EXPRESSION IS MUCH DIFFERENT THEN WESTERN ONES, YOU MAY INTERPRET THAT AS "NOT HAPPY"

We Americans take most everything for granted. We've had it so easy in comparison. Perspective is ALWAYS a good thing. It helps us grow as human beings.
Freedom is NOT free. The Service members of the U.S Military have been paying the price all these years. As a Korean American I also had an opportunity to serve In the U.S Army for 7 years going thru the 911 tragedy. It was a very meaning thing to do. God Bless America.
It's really incredible when you realize just how lucky we are to be American. There are other great countries to live in, sure, but the default is to live in poverty under an oppressive government. For all this country's faults, we have genuinely tried to go against the grain towards freedom. Pretty awesome when you consider that.
I really love seeing other cultures react to American traditions like this. It's so fascinating. And the North Korean stories definitely help me feel more thankful to have lived in the US all my life.
Right?! It always make cry happy tears to see them partake in an American tradition. Their faces when they see the veritable bounty of food Americans enjoy on one of our most sacred holidays, compared to what they grew up used to, makes me so happy that they were able to escape that awful dictatorship they once called home.
@Woiller- Relic/videos Um, American = citizen of the United States of America. Yes, the country was founded by Europeans and populated by immigrants (primarily from Europe), but once they obtained citizenship and/or were born here they were no longer Europeans but instead Americans. You are what your passport says you are. ;)
@Woiller- Relic/videos Nationality (citizenship) and ethnicity (race) are two different things. You can be an American with French ancestry, or an African-American, or Native American. All are Americans, regardless of genes.

It's so awesome seeing the yellow hair guy evolve through your videos!! He was so shy and probably scared when he first escaped and I think that showed when you first included him, and now he is more confident and even dying his hair! It's heartwarming to see him embracing his freedom, and he looks good with it too! ;)
Who else is crying? I was really struck when she talked about “American bastards” then they became angels. Think about how close this world could be if we spent time with people who are different than us and showed them kindness.
With all the yuckiness we Americans are inundated by the news, Its refreshing to see the human spirit shine with such beauty and humility! **wipes tear**
I’m really happy for these people and all, but can we talk about how awesome that chef is for a moment? He so humble and looks just so damn happy to be doing this!

Kinda hard to be thankful for anything when he lived in freaking North Korea. But I'm glad they got out and are able to experience freedom and that we can share thanksgiving with them.
The guy with the blonde hair has an interesting perspective that I first encountered when I moved to Albania. Many of the older people would talk about how even though they were lied to and had zero real liberties, they didn't really understand that until after the collapse of the dictatorship. It allowed them to focus on a simple life and be happy just with their farming or fishing. After the collapse of the dictatorship they too would talk about how it is now easier to live well but it is more difficult to be happy.
When you control your life, You take responsibility for everything that happens. So your successes are all yours. And your failures are also all yours. You can’t blame some government for your failures. I think That’s why people take life more seriously in free countries.
@@bruce5868 My only points of reference are, as I mentioned, living in Albania and that of meeting kids my age during the collapse of the Soviet Union. I grew up in a part of Cleveland, Ohio. My Russian friends would tell me about how they couldn't even process the idea of our grocery stores... that they'd be dumbfounded just looking at the candy isle (or, that there even was a candy isle.) I do agree and take a very libertarian stance on things; however, I don't even know how that would work within such constrictive societies like North Korea or Albania under the reign of Envar Hoxha.
@@Sybaris_Rex eh, idk if I would call Albania easier to live well in now, maybe by a slight margin, but Albania's experiment with capitalism has been almost as big a failure as their experiment with socialism was. God bless Minho. I truly hope he find happiness and be able to see his home again as a free man. Iron is the man. He was on dessert with a drumstick in his hand.
Everyone in the west should watch videos like this. Sometimes people in the west forget how good they have it. Making this kind of video an annual thing is a great idea.
I agree, Americans have lost touch with their history, we need to remember how our ancestors fought many bloody wars to become independent and create our own nation from the ground up. Freedom wasn't handed to us, it was fought for and we need to remember that and instill more values to our kids, so they can appreciate the hard work and sacrifice it takes to a become free nation.
I feel like thanksgiving itself has lost its meaning because most people don't struggle to eat that much, financially. Some could eat like that everyday. Think about it right after we have this huge meal celebrating what we're thankful for, so many people just go out and buy more things on black friday as if they don't have enough already.
Thank you Sky, thank you Ryan, and thank you to the folks who came to the dinner. You said that this dinner was like being with family, and meeting new friends. Think about this, about a MILLION OF US, one at a time, were part of your family for a few minutes. Thank you.
Turkey, honey baked ham, candied yams w/ roasted marshmallows, collard greens, and Mac n' cheese with Bacon bits. For dessert, either pumpkin pie or sweet potato pie 😋
The chef didn't make candied yams with marshmallows on top and he didn't put those crunchy onions on top of the green bean casserole. Was there a problem getting ingredients since they're in a different country? I'm positive someone would be willing to have them shipped over.
@@Karen-pk3uv not everyone uses marshmallows with candied yams. traditional southern candied yams is baked for example. nor is french onions put on green bean casserole.
South Korean government keeps tabs on DPRK refugees after they cross over just in case they are actually DPRK spies and for other reasons. The SK government probably just told him where she was.
This was amazing. This definitely needs to be a yearly thing. It's really amazing seeing one of our holiday traditions through the eyes of someone from another culture. I will definitely be more thankful this year and will try harder not to take the feast we enjoy each year for granted after watching this video. And I'm so grateful to Minho, Yumi, Inha, and Eunhee for sharing their stories and their culture!
Some of the stories they have told throughout the series has really taught me what I need to be thankful for - and that is never to have been so hungry and malnourished to need to do that.
I had it done differently when I were kept in the isolation cell of Vietnamese communist prison back in the late 1970s to 1981, we were all starved because of being fed only a plain cup of rotten cooked bad rice twice a day plus haft a cup of water from boiled green vegetable and a little salt, so I drank close to a whole liter of water before eating, then slowly chew little by little cooked rice at a time, dragged it out a whole hour, it made me feel like so full and satisfied when finished. Until now almost 40 years later I would finish eating every thing I have or save for later, clean out my dish or bowl to the last pieces or drops, nothing left over or throw away (except bones, lol!).
My grandparents fled religious persecution and genocide. It was either flee or die and they were forced to live in caves for a while and some how were able to get out and come to the USA. It has been instilled in me since birth to be thankful for being born in a country where we get to celebrate AS A NATION why we are thankful in our own unique, individual ways. I was never allowed to forget that and it is something my wife and I have passed on to our children and they have embraced it in the same manner. Don't take what you have for granted. This video is incredibly touching because these people from a country being throttled by such an oppressive regime are sharing an American holiday to celebrate their thanks in the same unique individual ways we do as Americans and that is touching no matter who you are or where you are from. I am also thankful that these wonderful people have opened their hearts and minds because this American has always been empathetic and sympathetic to the people of North Korea and how tough their daily life must be. The fact that Minho can still be thankful for where he came from tells me he is a man of great character. I'd like to have a beer with that guy!!
Life was the same in the former Soviet Union and eastern Europe that was under Soviet rule. People had to forage for food in the woods. Oddly enough, that's why the eastern Europeans and Russians are healthier, stronger and hardier than the west and are predominantly heterosexual societies. It's due to the superior foods of nature rather than the factory junk from the West. Now that Russia and eastern Europe are no longer communist, they will catch up to the physical ailments of the West.
@@pollypurree1834 I'm pretty sure the LGBTQ community is still a minority here in the West dude. Due to the fact that half this country runs on Christianity (and probably some other factors as well), I think it's safe to say we are still a predominantly heterosexual society. Its just that thanks to Freedom of Speech/Expression and the anti-discrimination stuff going on, people are a lot more open about it, which _feels_ like the majority but in reality, only about 3% or 4% of the U.S. is LGBTQ. Idk much about the other stuff you said tho.
@@fakeituntilkingdomcome Try about an estimated 80% of the millenials are said to be gay. A normal society is supposed to be 20% gay to 80% straight. The numbers have slowly reversed since WW2. Most gays hide in the closet and only 9 to 10% are open.
I agree 100%. It was wonderful to see foreigners enjoying, rather than trashing, American food and customs. I think what we're accustomed to watching is privileged people.

Wow, I don’t know this channel, but you gave them a real American Thanksgiving. Much like every thanksgiving dinner I’ve had with my family. Long tables, passing around the food, the different things to eat. At my thanksgivings we had cranberry, turkey, stuffing/dressing, mashed potatoes with gravy, casserole, biscuits, pies, etc. I’m so happy you guys gave them an authentic American experience. I feel like a lot of videos where North Koreans try American food it doesn’t feel authentic, but you did it right. You and Ryan gave them an authentic experience.
I have seen several videos of people having food that is new to them and they are interesting and often amusing. This is far more meaningful simply because of the context of Thanksgiving and a table of Koreans who have found a new life and new freedoms and are truly thankful. A great video. Thanks for posting.
I'm so happy my family first came here in 1630. I can't believe that most of the world live in homeless conditions and have no money. Actually they live in worse that homeless conditions they poop where ever, the water is contaminated. Its horrible. It was really cool that these people got to experience another part of the greatest country in the world. I think it would be awesome to give them a Thanksgiving meal while they are still fresh out of the country. Just to see the surprise and happiness of so much food sitting on a table
Well, you can't generalize. Individuals certainly have suffered in their own way even while living in America. It's not fair to try and compare different kinds of loss or hardship.

I've been fascinated with North Korea ever since I found out about the country in middle school. In college a few years ago I even wrote a paper over some of the problems they were facing within their own country as well as problems on the international level. I just wanna say thank you so much for these videos. They shed light on a lot of things most people take for granted today. I really hope that one day the people of North Korea gain their freedom and their basic human rights. Most of them have been suffering far too long. Thanks again for the awesome video!
North koreans are not so suffering as you may think. Most have decent lives. Only when the country is unable to produce enough food due to natural disasters is when they suffer. Thats when north koreans decide to leave their country. Otherwise plenty of food is given to them when theres enough food to go around. Other points that the defectors make about north korea is that people there do not chase money unlike capitalist countries like the US. Its unfortunate that some defectors have "homeless mentality", seems very ungreateful and would rather go back than to work hard for the money.

The guy with the blonde hair has an interesting perspective that I first encountered when I moved to Albania. Many of the older people would talk about how even though they were lied to and had zero real liberties, they didn't really understand that until after the collapse of the dictatorship. After the collapse of the dictatorship they too would talk about how it is now easier to live well but it is more difficult to be happy.

And I am thankful for you.
Amen.
Homie on the left seems to be getting more and more "South Korean-ized" every video. That hair tho. lol

@@gholland5840 especially the Rattlers 😁, just make sure they don't bite themselves first (yes, that is a thing they do).
I was expecting a typical foreign people try American food video. This brought tears of joy to my eyes. This was amazing to see. Thank you.
I agree 100%. It was wonderful to see foreigners enjoying, rather than trashing, American food and customs. I think what we're accustomed to watching is privileged people.
I'm a Full-blooded Native American man who just enjoys seeing people enjoy good food and good conversation.
You are an awesome individual and I truly appreciate your comment. The history is so important bc it gives rise to our present circumstances and yet there is always something transcendant and relatable like this to show some beauty.

Sorry our forefathers' scumbag elected officials screwed over your entire civilization.
"Full-blooded Native American" I don't tell people that, I tell them i'm a Mohawk of Akwesasne. You know, my TRIBE and WHERE FROM. Saying you're full blood native usually means you're like elizibeth warren, with one grandparent that only saw a native american a hundred years ago.
It really warmed my heart when they talked about learning what it meant to feel thankful.
Are not us Americans very very lucky and very very blessed? Great video with great people.
@discorperted you're an idiot
@discorperted If it's so bad then why don't you leave??? You poor victim...
I wish I was american, not saying I live in locked country
Well, you can't generalize. Individuals certainly have suffered in their own way even while living in America. It's not fair to try and compare different kinds of loss or hardship.
Hi, I glad that they got the chance to fellowship over a great meal with a superb host and wonderful restauranteer. The Chefs manners were that of a host in his own home. Great job to you both. To the North Korean guests wishing you all a beautiful Holiday season and I hope you all find it covered with abundant love.
HAHA, the explosion and screaming falcon sound after the "freedom is great" scared the crap outta me. totally and hilariously unexpected.
Dan you’re not alone
Try the freedom intensifies joke when the camera effect was the USA flag and the eagle noise XD
When I saw that eagle come out after she said "freedom is great" I laughed so hard lol! Ugh I miss my freedom.. but it's ok. I'm fighting for everyone else's freedom! (Marine) -.-

I loved this whole video!! Everyone was so charming and sweet. Ryan and his compassionate and caring nature had me in tears. He was so happy to have them enjoy his food. What a sweet heart with a gorgeous smile. I could cry, everyone was so nice and most of all, thankful.

Minho looks even healthier than in the bbq video, it makes me happy to see that he's acclimated so well to South Korea :)
