Damn...You got me. As an old US military guy thats deployed to South Korea a few times over the years, seeing this brought tears to my eyes. My heart goes out to the NK people. Hope one day we can all eat wings together. Big thumbs up!

I've been trying to tell people this for years. A lot of Americans are trying to be so woke, they end up trying to fit in by hating their own race. All of my white friends are chill, not racist, good people. But because of the few bad ones they hear in the media, they talk shit about themselves. 🤦 It just comes off really stupid to me 🤷♀️ I'm half korean, doesn't mean I should hate a part of me because Kim jung il is one of the most terrible people in history.

I was raised to be kind to everyone, everyone is the same, judge people by their treatment of others, and always help people who need it when you can.

With an American guy. This is some fantastic video. And Sky's Korean is very impressive. This guy interacted with more North Koreans than I ever will and my grandfather was born in Pyongyang before the divide. These kinds of videos open your eyes to what life in North Korea and what lifestyles these guys lived far better than any documentary that talks about the Korean War and then the oppressive regime; things we already know to a degree. In the other video, they talked about how eating beef was illegal because a cow/ox can do the work of several people and you can get executed for doing so. What an eye opener.

When the N Korean guy said " I wouldn't know what chicken tastes like because i only ate rice my whole life " i like to shit myself laughing & remembering my 1st experience with american food as a boy,i was born in African Libya,when i was a boy & my parents still refugees we were taken in by the US Embassy where a black US Marine gave us Cheese Burgers for the 1st time in 1952,none of us knew how to eat them but we managed to figure it out,i could only eatba small portion because it felt like lead in my belly but my energy level was through the roof ,ill never forget my parents talking and saying they now understand why American's are so strong from a diet of meat,America & western world are the only places where beef pork or chicken is ate everyday,for half the world if we eat all 3 meats once a year it's alot.
I love hamburgers. But as an American I can't even understand why we need meat so often. A bowl of rice with some veggies and seasoning in it is a meal to me. But when I started cooking for my boyfriend, if I served him anything without meat for dinner he acted like it was a side dish and I was crazy. I also know what you mean by lead in your belly feeling (not sure what your situation was and im not referring to hunger) but often getting certain dishes that are too greasy or have too much meat, fat, dairy just hit your stomach and make you feel bad for a bit. Glad you get to enjoy hamburgers! Mmmmmm.... 🍔
Man, there's nothing like watching people who escaped from totalitarianism experiencing new things to make me appreciate my good fortune in having been born in a developed country. I'm so happy for their freedom and new found zest for life, but sad for their countrymen who remain confined in the world's largest prison.

Well, before she escaped, she had access to better foods than the average North Korean, and learned to appreciate the different varieties. She's open to new experiences, but also can decide quickly what she does and doesn't like, and explain why. That's a good attribute in a person who gives lectures about NoKo life and the differences with the outside world.
You're right. The imperialist forces put on N Korea have made it less than ideal, while making it more ideal for yourself. The key isn't to somehow change N Korea, it is changing your own imperialist and exploitative country you live in.

When the older lady was talking about her first interaction with an American being a soldier, and that he had the fortitude to be able to emote that way was so encouraging to me. It seems like there’s a negative perception of Americans in most cultures, and hearing a story of a soldier crying and smiling when hearing stories about N Korea was truly heartwarming.
I grew up in South Korea In the 80s... we used to draw anti-communist posters and had emergency war drills. Today I'm in Canada watching an African American showing North Koreans about different kinds of wings in an open restaurant.... Times have changed is an understatement. Love it

I love Jarritos. We used to go to Juarez once or twice a year. That was back in the late 80's & 90's, when it was safe. We would pick up a few cases to take home with us. I love the orange and to be honest, I am not sure if it's the soda I like or the fact that it's in a glass bottle. Nothing like an ice cold soda in a glass bottle. It just isn't the same in plastic. Soda in a plastic bottle is like Mexican food made in Oklahoma. It just aint right. lol Thumbs up for the red chili. As hot as possible of course. :) Good Day!!
Honestly the best part about this is just seeing North Koreans truly enjoying themselves. They also have a very different perspective on food we consider "normal"

I really like Sky’s participation in this video. Not only is he an American, if you didn’t read the description you wouldn’t have known that he’s actually a 10 year military veteran. Since males and females are required to be in-listed in North Korea, if America and North Korea had an actual war, these people,who are face-to-face over table of food, could have very well been face-to-face over the barrel of a gun. Sky was very respectful and I’m glad to see that. I would love to see more content with him in it.
I am so happy for these young people. But I am also so sad for the ones they left behind who may never share in this exchange of friendship. I am glad Digitalsouju has done this for them
It is my sincerest hope that north korea can finally be free. Not controlled by a foreign power, but truly free of their repressive, tyrannical government and can partake in the wonder and joy that is cultural exchange.
The more I watch these videos, the more I believe that good food, sharing culture and friendly company is the path to tolerance and peace. "It's difficult to hate someone after you've broken bread with him." Live long and prosper.
It's surprising that breaking bread with others to understand them is such an ancient custom, yet ignored so heavily nowadays despite being one of the few ancient customs shown to have merit.
joshua kim I think it’s because when humans see eating or are eating it makes you calmer because in the wild the only time we would eat is when we feel safe, I think there is definitely something to it

I think a lot of these types of channels make the mistake of patronizing the guests that they interview but all I’ve seen from these guys so far is high quality content with a ton of respect. Love it
It is true that a lot of "interview with North Korean" videos online just want to focus on the darkness, their worst experiences, etc. These videos go a very different way by asking open-ended questions and not assuming that their lives were horrible drudgery from sunrise to sunset in North Korea. And of course the focus of the video is showing their reactions to new experiences, which is very addictive to watch.
I started tearing up when they spoke about their first impressions of Americans vs the anti-American propaganda that was fed to them. I really hope someday all North Korea can be unified with South Korea. So we can all sit down and have wings together. -From a New Yorker
She has been in a number of their videos. I also believe she does a lot of public speaking on her experiences in North Korea and tours around. She definitely has a very vibrant personality compared to the somewhat more constrained manner of the others.

I’ve been eating wings for 30 years and this is the first time I’ve ever seen those three finger gloves. Also the chef is great. An abundance of spot-on information regarding the wings and they look great! I’d be impressed if a local wing spot knew all of that and this guy is halfway around the world. I appreciate the extra effort to thoroughly research and prepare for this dish.
I was in a bar/restaurant in Denmark called "Tex_Mex". and the bartender was Russian, the waiter Romanian and the guy sitting next to me was Lithuanian!
It really Brings a smile to my face to see them free. Freedom and food is something us Americans take for granted, and these lovely people had to fight for it. Much love from America 🇺🇸
They did.. And they deserve every bit they get. These are good people who suffered through a lot. I can't help but smile and feel happy for them, yet saddened that so many more are trapped, including, most likely, their families.
I gave an Asian couple (Northern Chinese man, South Korean woman) hot peppers, such as fatalii, scorpion, ghost, and reaper, and they couldn't handle them. I love them, yet I had avoided spicy foods all my life until I tasted the fatalii -- has a great flavor, so I put up with the heat, just for the taste. I dislike lots of other peppers that have some heat, but barely any flavor, as I don't go for heat for the sake of heat -- there's no endorphin rush for me.
When I heard that I was like nah you mean white people any Latin American, Asian American, middle eastern American and Louisiana American (they are a different breed) would agree lol
Mexican soda, even of American products like coke usually tastes better because it uses Sugar instead of Corn Syrup(which is only cheaper in the US do to corn subsidies). I prefer Coke made in Mexico over Coke made in the US.

i can't stop watching pilju. every time he smiles or laughs, it makes my heart so warm. he has such a special energy, and it's so inspiring to see that he feels and expresses emotion so genuinely even after all he's been through. my life isn't going that great right now, but knowing that someone like pilju has been through hell and back but can still find it in him to smile and express so much joy at something as simple as chicken wings gives me hope.
As an American I know we are spoiled. After hearing stories of North Korean defectors and seeing their reactions and great appreciation for something that me and fellow Americans take for granted it is a reminder of how grateful we must be even for things as common as wings. I've been watching a lot of videos like these lately and they make me want to hug every North Korean and throw them a pizza party. These videos inspire me to try to appreciate the things I have more and to do more for others.
The subtitles has me dying sometimes. “Laughing in American” 😂. But in all seriousness though, it’s great that they get to do things like this to demonstrate how humbling it is to have this type of life where we don’t have to worry about our next meal, whether someone is spying on us, etc. Pil Ju has got to be the cutest thing I’ve ever seen though. ☺️
For wings maybe...but they do get hella messy so it makes sense. It's common in the US for gloves when you eat out at certain seafood places that serve lobster or crabs.
My grandpa was a soldier in Korea during the war . He drove a truck carrying supplies and soldiers to the front lines . Sometimes he drove back to base with an empty truck , sometimes he carried troops back to base after they had been in battle for some time . Some of those men had been wounded in the fighting . One of his duties was to guard his base , carrying a carbine , with orders to shoot anyone who tried to enter the base without permission. Outside their perimeter fence they had created a trash dump . The locals began to come out in numbers to pick through the refuse . Grandpa had been ordered to shoot those who got too close to their base . Sometimes they would fire their weapons over the heads of the trash pickers to scare them off and show their sergeants that they were doing their job . The locals would return after a while and continue to search through the waste . My grandpa and his fellow soldiers were born during the American Depression and knew what it was like to be poor and hungry . He told me that they couldn't shoot people who were worse off than they had been . They had no problem with shooting at enemy soldiers , but poor civilians , No .
My dad was 8-11 during that time and said the stuff the American soldiers used to throw away was astonishing. Alot of small korean businesses got their start and many fed their families from that stuff including mine (they made those sieves for food from discarded metal mesh). It's definitely a big part of Korean lore.
His facial features looks like he's mixed black and korean to me. Speech also seems like his mother was on the asian side and spoke to him in korean growing up to keep her culture also .Probably a military baby. Great vid. Now it's almost time to get off work, go home to eat homemade garlic and bbq hot wings which we eat every Friday night.

Can I just say that the way the owners' describe each flavor of their wings is almost poetic? Like passion seeps out when they talk and explain their food and I appreciate that. Making my mouth water even when I know what they taste like but to read how they explain each flavor is omg foodgasm.
I also went to your second channel but i couldn't figure out the titles of the videos, just an idea but maybe put some titles in both Korean and English so we can watch too. I did notice that you had subtitles in English but i just didnt know what the videos were about until 5 or 10 min in. Cheers!!
As someone who spent a majority of his adult life in a foreign country, I have to say: Sky has managed to integrate himself in SK culture while keeping true to himself. This is not an easy task, it takes a true understanding of what the important values of a culture is and what the cultural tendencies (that can be ignored without offending) are. I spent 12 years in China, during which I saw people who had been in the country for 40 years and could barely say Hello in mandarin (more than a few). In short, it's awesome to see someone reach that level. Also, thanks for representing America in such an awesome fashion.
RIP Tony Bourdain. Nobody among the celebrity chefs understood culture and people as well as he did. To me, Alton Brown has the most expertise and technical knowledge about food, Andrew Zimmern has the raw childlike enthusiasm and eagerness, but Tony understood food culture and *people* the most.
It's true but only when the meal is good. When the meal is tasty, you both have a common ground - the enjoyment of the food being served. When you have that you begin to talk more openly. If you can cook like Bourdain, then I'm guessing you have lots of opportunities to talk and make friends.
I really enjoy watching the sharing of culture to people who were not exposed to other cultures. That is percisely what you guys have achieved with this channel, and I am glad to be able to watch such reactions thanks to you producers at Digital Soju. Thank you!

Kind of like how other countries look at us as citizens because of our leader. We're all just regular people trying to get by, no matter what our government does.
Truth. A country can be terrible, but once you see them as individuals, and get to know them... everyone is generally good, once you can relate to them. It's so heartening to see stuff like this.

Carter Um- most North Koreans don't eat dog. A lot of NKs didn't have any meat other than chicken and pig. They have noodles and vegetables and flavor. It's the same as many other countries.
Kat Everlasting Well why did they mention it in the video? Were the North Koreans lying? Before you get the wrong impression, no not every country in Asia is full of people eating dogs. Only a few have that issue and it is ussually due to poverty and packs of wild dogs that are violent, so can't really blame them.

Well if you think about it, the way humanity works is they slowly solve big problems that we face as a society. War was not a priority because not more than a few thousand people could die from it at any moment. How to have food on demand to eliminate hunting, creating societal rulerships, money, these were all problems that we solved because they had stronger benefits than world peace.In recent years tho, war casualties started being over 10 million and today in the event of ww3 billions could potentially die, so this is now a primary issue. All wars happen because of either lack of or bad communication, all conflict in fact, so the first step to peace is having a free information flow for every person, people and government, an open dialogue. The birth of the internet is the first step towards that if the net stays free.(FIGHT FOR NET NUTRALITY!!) And yes I've read War and Peace and I am aware of the fact that some say that war is the natural state of humankind, but there is something stronger than that, and thats evolution. If war can wipe us all out, then I believe humanity can evolve in order to preserve the species. Out of the two "primal" impulses(if we say that war is natural and primal), I think everyone would rather have sex than kill each other ;) We will solve War, Poverty, Disease, Pollution, but we tend to do it like studying, the night before the big exam.
Egh, this lovey-dovey philosophical stuff makes me wanna gag. Maybe even purposely stick my fingers in my throat just to do it. Hate isn't taught, it is natural. The way it manifests, differs. Communication and Love doesn't overcome anything outside of itself. Love doesn't insist on its own way, people are just not going to want love or, at the very least, not going to reciprocate it. I'm all for love and peace, but lets not put our heads in the clouds, it can't be achieved in this earthly life. There will always be conflict. Reduced perhaps, but you can't win everything by hugging everything. The only way to solve the worlds problems is Jesus, otherwise, it'll never work. You have to change humans from the inside out, not from the outside in(which can't work). It requires a heart change. The default human heart is wicked and unmerciful, a pretty easy observation if you seen the world.

As an American all I can do is smile when I watch people from other cultures eat our foods and enjoy them. We would be happy if everyone sat down with us for dinner and enjoyed a meal . Good food makes everyone smile and because of the people in our country we have so many amazing flavors and varieties of foods. So happy to see people smile and enjoy my favorite food chicken wings :)
I like that this shows the world that we have a very diverse diet, which isn’t reflected in the stereotypes. The idea that America has no culture is ridiculous. It’s a conglomerate of cultures around the world coming together and synthesizing something completely different. As well as contributing foods that you can’t find anywhere else.
@U Q I prefer it to some old stale tradition bound culture any day. We are creating our own culture and not stuck with a hand me down worn out culture. I still enjoy other cultures and find the whole world fascinating or I wouldn't be watching this channel in the first place. I almost feel sad for you.

Across the world, it's a good idea to relax and enjoy a good meal with people you want to be around, and not be intentionally criticized for unintentional behavior. I'd rather have someone who (maybe?) smacks while they eat than someone who talks smack after I eat....
I always rewatch these videos around Thanksgiving. These are beautiful, sweet people with interesting stories, and it's always fascinating to me to see how differently they react to various American foods. People truly do have a variety of palates.

With an American guy. This is some fantastic video. And Sky's Korean is very impressive. This guy interacted with more North Koreans than I ever will and my grandfather was born in Pyongyang before the divide. These kinds of videos open your eyes to what life in North Korea and what lifestyles these guys lived far better than any documentary that talks about the Korean War and then the oppressive regime; things we already know to a degree.
In the other video, they talked about how eating beef was illegal because a cow/ox can do the work of several people and you can get executed for doing so. What an eye opener.

A bowl of rice with some veggies and seasoning in it is a meal to me. But when I started cooking for my boyfriend, if I served him anything without meat for dinner he acted like it was a side dish and I was crazy.
I also know what you mean by lead in your belly feeling (not sure what your situation was and im not referring to hunger) but often getting certain dishes that are too greasy or have too much meat, fat, dairy just hit your stomach and make you feel bad for a bit.

Well, before she escaped, she had access to better foods than the average North Korean, and learned to appreciate the different varieties. She's open to new experiences, but also can decide quickly what she does and doesn't like, and explain why. That's a good attribute in a person who gives lectures about NoKo life and the differences with the outside world.

When the older lady was talking about her first interaction with an American being a soldier, and that he had the fortitude to be able to emote that way was so encouraging to me. It seems like there’s a negative perception of Americans in most cultures, and hearing a story of a soldier crying and smiling when hearing stories about N Korea was truly heartwarming.
I grew up in South Korea In the 80s... we used to draw anti-communist posters and had emergency war drills. Today I'm in Canada watching an African American showing North Koreans about different kinds of wings in an open restaurant.... Times have changed is an understatement. Love it

I love Jarritos. We used to go to Juarez once or twice a year. That was back in the late 80's & 90's, when it was safe. We would pick up a few cases to take home with us. I love the orange and to be honest, I am not sure if it's the soda I like or the fact that it's in a glass bottle. Nothing like an ice cold soda in a glass bottle. It just isn't the same in plastic.

I really like Sky’s participation in this video. Not only is he an American, if you didn’t read the description you wouldn’t have known that he’s actually a 10 year military veteran. Since males and females are required to be in-listed in North Korea, if America and North Korea had an actual war, these people,who are face-to-face over table of food, could have very well been face-to-face over the barrel of a gun. I think a lot of these types of channels make the mistake of patronizing the guests that they interview but all I’ve seen from these guys so far is high quality content with a ton of respect. Love it
It is true that a lot of "interview with North Korean" videos online just want to focus on the darkness, their worst experiences, etc. These videos go a very different way by asking open-ended questions and not assuming that their lives were horrible drudgery from sunrise to sunset in North Korea. And of course the focus of the video is showing their reactions to new experiences, which is very addictive to watch.
This video made me smile for 18 minutes straight.
I started tearing up when they spoke about their first impressions of Americans vs the anti-American propaganda that was fed to them. I really hope someday all North Korea can be unified with South Korea. So we can all sit down and have wings together. -From a New Yorker

I gave an Asian couple (Northern Chinese man, South Korean woman) hot peppers, such as fatalii, scorpion, ghost, and reaper, and they couldn't handle them.
I love them, yet I had avoided spicy foods all my life until I tasted the fatalii -- has a great flavor, so I put up with the heat, just for the taste. I dislike lots of other peppers that have some heat, but barely any flavor, as I don't go for heat for the sake of heat -- there's no endorphin rush for me.
I live in Florida so we have all them Jamaican, Trini and Guyana spices, my tongue is basically iron at this point

i can't stop watching pilju. every time he smiles or laughs, it makes my heart so warm. he has such a special energy, and it's so inspiring to see that he feels and expresses emotion so genuinely even after all he's been through. my life isn't going that great right now, but knowing that someone like pilju has been through hell and back but can still find it in him to smile and express so much joy at something as simple as chicken wings gives me hope.

As an American I know we are spoiled. After hearing stories of North Korean defectors and seeing their reactions and great appreciation for something that me and fellow Americans take for granted it is a reminder of how grateful we must be even for things as common as wings. I've been watching a lot of videos like these lately and they make me want to hug every North Korean and throw them a pizza party. These videos inspire me to try to appreciate the things I have more and to do more for others.

But in all seriousness though, it’s great that they get to do things like this to demonstrate how humbling it is to have this type of life where we don’t have to worry about our next meal, whether someone is spying on us, etc.

For wings maybe...but they do get hella messy so it makes sense. It's common in the US for gloves when you eat out at certain seafood places that serve lobster or crabs.

My grandpa was a soldier in Korea during the war . He drove a truck carrying supplies and soldiers to the front lines . Sometimes he drove back to base with an empty truck , sometimes he carried troops back to base after they had been in battle for some time . Some of those men had been wounded in the fighting . One of his duties was to guard his base , carrying a carbine , with orders to shoot anyone who tried to enter the base without permission. Outside their perimeter fence they had created a trash dump . The locals began to come out in numbers to pick through the refuse . Grandpa had been ordered to shoot those who got too close to their base . Sometimes they would fire their weapons over the heads of the trash pickers to scare them off and show their sergeants that they were doing their job . The locals would return after a while and continue to search through the waste . My grandpa and his fellow soldiers were born during the American Depression and knew what it was like to be poor and hungry . He told me that they couldn't shoot people who were worse off than they had been . They had no problem with shooting at enemy soldiers , but poor civilians , No .
My dad was 8-11 during that time and said the stuff the American soldiers used to throw away was astonishing. Alot of small korean businesses got their start and many fed their families from that stuff including mine (they made those sieves for food from discarded metal mesh). It's definitely a big part of Korean lore.

Can I just say that the way the owners' describe each flavor of their wings is almost poetic? Like passion seeps out when they talk and explain their food and I appreciate that. Making my mouth water even when I know what they taste like but to read how they explain each flavor is omg foodgasm.

As someone who spent a majority of his adult life in a foreign country, I have to say: Sky has managed to integrate himself in SK culture while keeping true to himself. This is not an easy task, it takes a true understanding of what the important values of a culture is and what the cultural tendencies (that can be ignored without offending) are. I spent 12 years in China, during which I saw people who had been in the country for 40 years and could barely say Hello in mandarin (more than a few). In short, it's awesome to see someone reach that level. Also, thanks for representing America in such an awesome fashion.

RIP Tony Bourdain. Nobody among the celebrity chefs understood culture and people as well as he did. To me, Alton Brown has the most expertise and technical knowledge about food, Andrew Zimmern has the raw childlike enthusiasm and eagerness, but Tony understood food culture and *people* the most.

It's true but only when the meal is good. When the meal is tasty, you both have a common ground - the enjoyment of the food being served. When you have that you begin to talk more openly.

Carter Um- most North Koreans don't eat dog. A lot of NKs didn't have any meat other than chicken and pig. They have noodles and vegetables and flavor. It's the same as many other countries.
Kat Everlasting Well why did they mention it in the video? Were the North Koreans lying? Before you get the wrong impression, no not every country in Asia is full of people eating dogs. Only a few have that issue and it is ussually due to poverty and packs of wild dogs that are violent, so can't really blame them.

Well if you think about it, the way humanity works is they slowly solve big problems that we face as a society. War was not a priority because not more than a few thousand people could die from it at any moment. How to have food on demand to eliminate hunting, creating societal rulerships, money, these were all problems that we solved because they had stronger benefits than world peace.In recent years tho, war casualties started being over 10 million and today in the event of ww3 billions could potentially die, so this is now a primary issue. All wars happen because of either lack of or bad communication, all conflict in fact, so the first step to peace is having a free information flow for every person, people and government, an open dialogue. The birth of the internet is the first step towards that if the net stays free.(FIGHT FOR NET NUTRALITY!!) And yes I've read War and Peace and I am aware of the fact that some say that war is the natural state of humankind, but there is something stronger than that, and thats evolution. If war can wipe us all out, then I believe humanity can evolve in order to preserve the species. Out of the two "primal" impulses(if we say that war is natural and primal), I think everyone would rather have sex than kill each other ;) We will solve War, Poverty, Disease, Pollution, but we tend to do it like studying, the night before the big exam.

I'm all for love and peace, but lets not put our heads in the clouds, it can't be achieved in this earthly life. There will always be conflict. Reduced perhaps, but you can't win everything by hugging everything.
The only way to solve the worlds problems is Jesus, otherwise, it'll never work. You have to change humans from the inside out, not from the outside in(which can't work). It requires a heart change. The default human heart is wicked and unmerciful, a pretty easy observation if you seen the world.

As an American all I can do is smile when I watch people from other cultures eat our foods and enjoy them. We would be happy if everyone sat down with us for dinner and enjoyed a meal . Good food makes everyone smile and because of the people in our country we have so many amazing flavors and varieties of foods. So happy to see people smile and enjoy my favorite food chicken wings :)

I like that this shows the world that we have a very diverse diet, which isn’t reflected in the stereotypes. The idea that America has no culture is ridiculous. It’s a conglomerate of cultures around the world coming together and synthesizing something completely different. As well as contributing foods that you can’t find anywhere else.

I always rewatch these videos around Thanksgiving. These are beautiful, sweet people with interesting stories, and it's always fascinating to me to see how differently they react to various American foods. People truly do have a variety of palates.
