Well contrary to popular opinion I always liked Brett, lol, I watched the show after school in the 70’s and her laugh/cackle was something I remembered distinctly from the show so just reminds me of the old show.
I always liked her a lot too! I must have started watching in about '75 or so and by then she and Charles had formed quite an amusing relationship on the show-they really were much funnier together! So I think people will take to Brett more once Charles takes that permanent seat next to her.
My now deceased older brother was good friends with his younger brother Thomas Evans, who was the star of ABC's Movie Of The Week's "Trouble Comes To Town" (1973) with Lloyd Bridges
The 6th seat was a thankless position to be in because many, many times the final fate of the contestant rested on that panelist's answer. Betty White frequently commented on it.
Like 3rd base at the black jack table. You make a great decision, no one says boo. But if you screw it up for the entire table, watch yourself on the way to the parking lot!
re: the Judy/Fanny seat switch --- Brett Somers (among others) pointed out that the 4th seat (lower left) was the dummy seat, (often occupied by a "dizzy blonde" type), and that the 6th seat had to have a sharp-witted panelist it in because, being last, it was the hardest position in which to come up with a fresh quip. Fanny Flagg had already sat in the 4th seat for at least two previous weeks, and she started this week in that seat. The 6th seat was filled by the presumed-to-be sophisticated English lady, Judy Carne. After two days of gameplay, they realized that Fanny looked like a Rhodes scholar compared to Judy. So, they switched seats.
Judy had also stated in her first episode that she hated being last and specifically asked Gene if they could change her seat. Rayburn didn't give any response, but clearly the switch was made later on in the filming. Fannie may have never gone back to the fourth position following this swap. It just worked.
Now I know why they started the MG wheel because they had to give the other celebrities a chance to help the contestants!! Richard Dawson was a POPULAR PICK!!! R.I.P
Adding the star wheel wasnt about fairness. They didn't have to give other celebrities a chance that's just silly. For context the show started off slowly and was cancelled after 6 months. They had 6 months left on the contract so they went for broke, new writers and risqué question became standard. The show took off and was soon the #1 rated daytime showvfor several years. A network exec moved the show from late afternoon to early morning and the ratings catered. After a year the show was moved back to mid afternoon to try to move up in the ratings it help but not like the old days. The star wheel was one of the changes to try to boost the ratings. It alienated Richard and after a year he left to do Family Fued exclusively. The show continued for two more years but was never as successful as it originally was.
In the 48 years since this episode was aired, Gene Rayburn, Bill Daily, Brett Somers, Jack Carter, Judy Carne, and Richard Dawson all have passed away. Kinda makes you wonder if any of the contestants are still around.
Pocketbook was THE answer! That is why the audience booed when Richard said “Pocket Money”. He cost Brian $2,500! Of course, Richard eventually got much better. Now I wonder what was Richard’s winning percentage in the head-to-head matches? I would guess maybe 75% or more.
Lol - "Sterile, which is never having to say you're sorry." If I could go back in time, I'd give Richard Dawson nothing to apologize for ... repeatedly. 😉
Regarding the Judy/Fannie seat switch, Ira Skutch in a 1975 interview for Broadcast Programming and Production magazine said the seating arrangement was casting with Brett, Charles (to come) and Richard performing specific roles. The sixth seat was cast for someone with a strong personality rather than ability to match (like Patty Deutch) because all the good answers and jokes were usually given by then. Ira obviously didn't have the cast concept for that seat by the time of this episode and I think Judy didn't work there (or anywhere for that matter). She had no personality and gave horrible answers...a wildcard role often performed by the fourth seat. I think this may be the episode where Ira settled on Fannie being in that last seat for the remainder of the episodes.
Brian resembles a nice coworker of mine. Brian looks in his mid-20s. My coworker was in his early 20s when we 1st started working together. He was in his late 20s when he left. What's weird is: I was 5 at this time. Brian is around 72. My coworker is around 29-32. (I'm 52, but not about me.) I hope Brian is doing very well. He should be mid-70s now. My parents are early 80s with health problems, but without symptoms. Brian should have AT LEAST 15-25 years of happiness. I said AT LEAST!
Leave it to Bill and Fannie to RUIN it for the contestants with their STUPID responses of Wong and Won Ton. I love this game show, but if I was old enough back then, you wouldn't catch ME on it. The contestants are there to make MONEY and all the panelist do is answer the questions for THEMSELVES! Why in the world did Brett find it necessary to grab the others' cards and rip them up while forcing herself in the picture while she was doing the ripping? How annoyingly stupid and lame.
It had to be all about Brett, as far as she was concerned. The card ripping routine was a ploy to get more attention and time on camera... Thus taking it away from other celebs.
Nice personality, too. He should be 72 to 78 years old, just guessing. That's pretty young, nowadays. He probably retired and kept working (if u know what I mean). He prob retired at 62 or 66 or 70, but kept working half-time. That's what everyone does now.

unusual for a seat change between Judy Carne and Fannie.
