As far as the Met Gala goes I find it so interesting too that the theme is actually based off of a short story The Garden of Time by JG Ballard which actually explores the unsustainable nature of the upper class and their display of wealth. Just so ironic.
One thing I think has been missing from the met gala is that it is a fundraiser for the met costuming department which does not receive outside funding. Funding the arts is still so important and I wish that the event would emphasize that vs. just seemingly being a publicity stunt. Art institutions are of course problematic too, but many people rely on the arts for income. Maybe in future years instead of just designers they could actually collaborate with the met costumers or something idk! The whole thing is really just weird to me that only the celeb side is getting emphasized while the entire point of the gala is erased 🤔
really loving your series so far! great way for me to keep up with the news i’m not seeing. wool usage being so low also has massive implications in New Zealand as it used to be a major industry here but has since diminished somewhat, and in its place even LESS sustainable production industry has cropped up… such as dairy farming (especially in dry areas of the country which have to be irrigated.) i would love to see you cover maybe in more depth the origins of a lot of clothing materials like wool, linen, cotton, silk, and of course polyester and other such synthetic fibers!
oooh i had no idea this was happening in New Zealand, i'd love to do a video talking about this!! have just put out a video on supply chains actually but not the origin of clothing, could be a really cool topic 🫶
Such a missed opportunity with the MET gala. I can think of so many ways of incorporating sustainability with this particular theme. Looking forward to your deep dive on Shein. And how ironic is it, that I thrifted an actual tennis skirt, a couple days ago. I just like, that they have inbuilt pants, so I can move and sit however I want without exposing myself. Or ride my bicycle. I had no idea, they were a literal trend atm. What a stupid idea 😅
The cotton supply chain news is unfortunate. It is kind of frustrating that at a time when both consumers and producers need to be moving towards using natural materials again, it is made harder by terrible supply chains and other environmental issues with growing regular cotton. Of course, there are smaller brands out there with ethical supply chains but they are not as accessible or well known. I am looking forward to your video on supply chains!
i subscribe to free newsletters from a massive variety of sources from fashion media outlets, journalists on substack etc and follow lots of ppl in the industry, i’ve also been working in this space for a while so i know previous things that have happened and may still be happening/ need a check in! this is specifically for my headline roundup videos, for some of my own videos i come up with the subject and then do research, some are news based that i then pick apart and dissect with my own opinions. i could do a whole video on this topic actually if you guys think it would be interesting!!

The garden of time is a book about death and the disconnect of class, so the theme was very odd to use as a met gala theme
