Ugh 🤦‍♀ Quality is a joke in many mid level and luxury brands. Doesn’t matter if it’s construction, fabric, notions …. It’s sad. I have some clothes in my wardrobe I’ve worn for over 30 years - classic and well made with quality materials. I take care of my clothes properly and they last. I buy secondhand because it’s more affordable and I can pick my fabrics and know the construction of certain brands. Luxury items for me are very rarely bought and even those are secondhand - such as a Temperley London dress. I don’t buy luxury bags, not interested in them. 🤷‍♀

I literally have none of these things except maybe the white tshirt which I never wear coz your girl's clumsy and would absolutely stain it. For me essentials are cargo pants and jeans which can go with different fun tops, shirts, kurtis and graphic tshirts. I have a few dresses that I love and some nice Indian ethnic wear for special occasions. No longer buy high heels. And I have no basic jewellery, mostly statement pieces. And I love what I have, staple is just what you naturally feel like wearing.

There is no such thing as an essential item for your wardrobe that would work universally for everyone 🤷‍♀️ The items these tik toks show are almost only things I don't wear, and it's always black and white and grey, it's sad to see loads of these everywhere. For me, a yellow shirt is an essential, because I love yellow. I wouldn't advise thousands of people to have a yellow shirt. But I still like the capsule wardrobe idea, you just have to make ot fit yourself, your style, your personality, your way of life... Mine is full of greens and yellows, it works for me. But I lacked some basics to make it all work together, and these videos enabled me to realize that, so now I have a beige t-shirt and a beige shirt 🤷‍♀️ Really, just take what works for you

I also think the we need to understand liking things on Pinterest or influencers doesn't mean you may be comfortable wearing it out in the real world. Confidence is a key I think is missing in a lot of style advice. I may like "sexy office worker" or whatever the style name is at the time but I wouldn't be confident enough to wear it IRL. To me I've found the 3-word challenge worked the best to help narrow down my style. Example, I may like mint green "feminine" items on Pinterest but when I purchased I never wear it. Clearly not matching up to what I actually wear. So was it the feminine element or the color. In reflecting on my style and what I do actually wear in IRL and comparing searching those items on Pinterest I found several outfits that are close what I do wear and determined it was the fact that I like feminine/girly clothing but in darker earth shades instead of pastels.

Capsule wardrobes are different to "wardrobe essentials" . A capsule wardrobe is when you use what you already have to create multiple outfits. For Eg, 3 x tops, 2 x pants, 1 x outerwear, where they all work together. Then you can build on that. Wardrobe essentials are the current influence at the moment, giving capsule wardrobes a bad rap. Great video!

I think the problems is that 99% of people think that capsule wardrobe is a bunch of neutral stuff that everyone have to wear when its supposed to be just a certain AMOUNT of clothes and accessories built around your preferences, STYLE, lifestyle etc. You could have wardrobe of outrageous bold bright stuff ever and still make it be capsule. So I feel like title of the videl is a bit misleading

Sustainably made clothes *are* more expensive, but that does not imply that all expensive clothes are more sustainable. Sometimes people call brands “luxury brands” purely because they are more expensive. I am not talking about lvmh brands. What I am trying to say is that sustainable clothes *will* come at a higher price ( if they are new ) and we have to accept that. If someone can’t afford it that’s ok, it was a thing for all our history. We can buy used clothes, make our own, repair what we have or simply have smaller wardrobes.

Why steal the ones from tsa??? They’re disgusting. I understand it’s another plastic item but if it’s the main prop of the video you only would need one.

Asked once why I was dressed up (I had a cute dress on) and I said "I dress for me". If you want to dress up to brunch go for it. If you want to look like you girl bossing it just to get milk, go for it. That's the point of style. I just think people need to step back and think for themselves. "Am I dressing for me or what I'm trying to emulate / social media pushing at me?" To me that's the biggest hurdle of them all. Cause I'll put on a cute dress and matching little handbag to go to brunch or wear my skinny jeans and tall boots like the Millenial I am. I don't care what social media thinks because I'm comfortable in my clothing.

I completely agree. Minimalist clothing groups and content often focus on capsule wardrobes and wardrobe apps. I do feel, for me personally, it can create more urges to consume, to try and find the perfect coat, t, etc. Also to have this highly functioning all pieces go together is a bar I don’t think I will ever achieve so it will keep me purchasing. It makes me focus way too much on clothes. A person could wear five to ten fantastic unique dresses or outfits to work and that works too. In fact in the 90s (I’m in my 50s), most of us probably didn’t have more than ten work outfits. Then we had weekend clothes and event clothes. Being unafraid to wear things or outfits you love is more the key for me than a perfect interchangeable capsule.

As a long-time reader of r/capsulewardrobe , I think this video conflates "capsule wardrobe" with the idea of "wardrobe staples/essentials." I think when retailers and influencers are selling trends/encouraging consumption, they are going to frame it as a "you need this," "it's a staple," etc. These sorts of selling points far predate the modern contextualization within "capsule wardrobes." Capsule wardrobes come from a place of thinking about your wardrobe as a contained system-a capsule-and trying to maximize the use of each piece by optimizing the number of different workable outfit combinations. It's a win for the consumer's wallet, an answer to decision fatigue, a path to personal style, and a win for sustainability. Plenty of capsule wardrobe "guides" spend the bulk of the time encouraging the reader to find out what are essentials *to them* through various methods (turning around the hanger of something you've worn, generally tracking outfits to see what items and silhouettes you gravitate towards, etc) and suggesting to "build" the capsule by carving it out of their existing wardrobe (e.g., 3x3x3 challenge). With the rise in popularity of capsule wardrobes that undercut consumption, sellers have co-opted the language of the capsule wardrobe to try to position their products to still sell. But it's the "wardrobe essentials" that are the culprit, not the capsule wardrobe. At 6:03, the Vogue article is even titled "wardrobe essentials," not "capsule wardrobe." Most of this video talks about wardrobe essentials, not capsule wardrobe. 🤷‍♀

I find it funny when brands put all those tags on their clothes when being sold when you’re using a lot of paper now. Let’s also talk about out how the little plastic that attaches the garment to the the tags can also be cut out. Patagonia cut out the plastic tag and uses string instead. They also cut down the amount of labels. Some of their pieces actually have the environment impact on the clothes on the inside of the garment. Plus their stores usually use reclaimed architecture materials as well as buying out historical buildings so they’re not torn down. So when H&M prances in about sustainability…yea no thanks sis.

I outfit repeat. I always have. It probably helped that I grew up poor. If I buy something, it's because I love it, so I will wear it as much as I can. Also, I was already being horrendously bullied at school, so any ridicule for wearing the same outfits for non uniform days or trips went unnoticed. I'm 40 now. I have my favourite pieces which get worn in almost exactly the same combinations, most days. I still have garments which I have owned for 20 years. My favourite knee high boots and my favourite backpack, I've owned since I was 19. I take care of the leather and have my cobbler resole and spruce them up when needed. I've never really grasped this idea of not repeating clothes, even for special occasions. I still feel awful that my wedding dress was only worn twice (wedding day and a photoshoot later on). I wore the lengha for my reception numerous times. I'm divorced now and if I ever remarry, I will be getting a dress I can re-wear over and over again, like my mum did(she made clothes for my sister and I, with it, when it wore out). I wholeheartedly welcome this shift in attitudes.

Knowing how planned out these shows are and how they want to invoke feelings to get you to buy, I'm immediately suspect, I don't trust any of them. They have spent too many years telling us what we wanted or thought we wanted to hear and they've been pulling the wool over our eyes instead of worrying about what was important.

I love your content. I also agree with the hypocrisy in the fashion industry. The truth is democracy often feels like an illusion. You’re given the choice between two parties, yet both ultimately back the same agenda.
