I see a lot of people, both in game and creators, that have this idea that you have to be "taught" how to actually enjoy the game. I think this is a big disservice to the game. The game itself will suck you in and the community will naturally keep most people coming back. In any other game, the devs could not imagine a world where they are able to put a "Hi, Im new here!" label on every newcomer and the player base treats them better for it. Load into an OW lobby with a sprout icon and half the people will scream at you, while the other half will just immediately leave the lobby. There is something very special about ff14

I think it's more like, deprogramming from treating it like most MMOs and blitzing through the MSQ to get to endgame since in other MMOs, only the most recent expansion's content is relevant. It's not like that here and people often need this pointed out to recognize that there's no need to rush, since you can start doing challenging content as low as level 50 and content is evergreen.
People who are newer to MMO genre tend to start having fun in ARR a lot sooner than old MMO vets, I've found. Sure there may be times where they get frustrated at how wordy stuff can get but they typically don't have that sense of FOMO urgency ingrained that they need to overcome. They just enjoy it for what it is, instead of being frustrated at it not fitting their expectations of what an MMO is "supposed" to be like.

Honestly the number of quests feels like a misnomer. Many of them follow the structure of: Talk to someone > Teleport > Talk to someone else > Teleport again > Talk to someone else > Quest done. They take 5 minutes to complete, if not faster!
This kind of quest design is definitely the low point of FF14 for me, but at the same time I suspect it's also the reason people stick with ARR, as the game wants you to feel rewarded every 5 minutes or so when doing an MSQ. The little hit of dopamine from seeing "QUEST COMPLETE" on screen does a lot of heavy lifting.
The story and pacing get a lot stronger from Heavensward onwards, with chunky cutscenes that make individual quests feel like they're taking longer to complete.

My brother and I started around the time your sister started. We played WoW Classic the years before and it became a real vaccation. We are not too community focused and do usually our own stuff, but I really appreciate the lively world. I also didn't like ARR and even now with even more cuts into the mainstory of ARR and reworks of dungeons etc., I still think they put even more focus in making ARR enjoyable from the start for new players.
I think the most important thing to really enjoy the game is to go out and do stuff you don't need to do, but want to experience and put a halt on the things you "must do" (MSQ) but don't want to do. The game has so much sidecontent that ranges from casual to hardcore, from social to mindlessly grindy and this already at level 50. When I got level 50, I started doing all the extremes with my brother and start unlocking side content that gives us a break from the endless dialogs in the MSQ. While I really love the story overall and as your sister says, it is really worth it to sit through the low points, because it makes those highs even more meaningful. I really started to connect with the character I was playing and become one of the world through the story telling and involvement and interactions that the NPCs have with my character. This is something that no other MMO i played did to this degree. And I think this also connects the player base in general much better, that went through the same emotions. The games story revolves around making connections and helping others, which is a very positive message that I feel people carry over and try to help new players to feel the same enjoyment as them. I didn't feel this in WoW for example, where most of the game was compressed on performance and dedication. We can now just go offline for months, let the story build up and come back without ever feeling like we missed something. The game preserves it's content over the years and I am glad that I always can go back and play something, that is technically irrelevant for progression. MSQ is important, it is the only thing that is mandatory to unlock the majority of content in the game. But I can really recommend to make a stop once in a while and check out the raids, optional trials or extremes and find likeminded people or a free company to do this activities. It really enhances the experience, makes you a better and more prepared player for future content and helps further with building the world and story. Even different job quests can have exclusive storys that give more insight about locations or special NPCs that can be easily missed, when staying on one job.
Sorry about all the brambling, I couldn't help myself. I had friends who also started the game, but most stopped in ARR before being able to experience some of the content, because of how dreadful the MSQ can be. I think most of them would enjoy the game if they pushed through ARR and be able to see all the rest the game has to offer. But I can really encourage people to slowly make your way through and give it a fair chance, if you have interest in a good fulfilling story. If you are a veteran MMO player like me, I can tell you that most jobs don't feel too good until at least level 70, but the combat becomes more fun with every expansion, even with dawntrail.

      100% this!!
Highly recommend doing at minimum, the 8-man raid series, alliance raids, and trial series, because the stories all tie back in to the MSQ and really round out the world. There are soooo many fun fights and dungeons that aren't in the MSQ that are so much fun.

4:30 “…I’m playing through the patches [right now]”
I was flabbergasted hearing this because I would not expect someone in that time to be making this kind of video. I also only recently got into FFXIV and I wasn’t feeling anything like this until I got to Shadowbringers. I did like it by the time I got to the end of base ARR, but was certainly not “I need to tell everyone about this” kind of fervent back then.

    • @hugblob8753

@@Beaniboi Lol! Yeah, I totally get where you're coming from. But if there's one thing to know about me, it's that when I come to love things, I love them intensely. I know my video certainly isn't anything new when it comes to FFXIV commentary but I wanted to make something from the perspective of a player who is still a sprout. Mainly to reach any other sprouts out there who might be feeling any of the same frustrations I'm feeling.
There's also the fact that- I kinda just like playing through the patches? Idk- maybe it's because I actually started to slow down and not just click through the dialogue but the story told in the patches generally engages me more than the main Realm Reborn story did.

@@hugblob8753 This is the same time that I fell in love with the story too. Around halfway through the patch cycle, I wrote a long rant to an acquaintance who also plays the game about how awful this was and that the only reasons I stuck around were the free trial and the nice community. By the time the patches finished, I was HYPED for HW. I think the stretch of post-ARR thru post-SB (I'm the only person in the world that doesn't especially like ShB) has some of the richest writing in video games, especially if you're into political machinations and economics and such.

I'm always a little torn on that. On one hand, yes, it would make things more consistent and increase the quality of ARR. But on the other hand, the actors were working with a rushed production schedule and did their best with the direction they had. I would feel bad if they thought it was disrespectful to their efforts.

Day 2: _"Who cares about freaking Stonehenge, I need to get to Bath!"_
Day 3: _"The fudge is with this amazing fish and chips?! It's not Bath!"_
Counting the journey in steps towards your destination is never fun, I strongly advice AGAINST it. Take the story as it comes. Whatever approach you take, you have to get through it. Take the steps one by one, rather than counting the steps yet to take. It's never going to be fun otherwise.

    • @Cellybeans
      @Cellybeans 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I was about to say the same thing. Treating the MSQ as a series of hurdles to jump over to "get to the good stuff" is gonna guarantee you're not gonna have a good time. Take breaks as needed, don't force MSQ if you're not up for reading and absorbing.
I realize it's hard to trust the writers when you're new to the game, but everything in ARR ties back in, and it may help more to stay present in what's currently happening in the story, and think about how these details might tie-in in the future since this game is Chekov's Gun Simulator.
I also recommend talking to random nearby NPCs as you do quests, and those at the Rising Stones or Waking Sands periodically. Their dialogue updates pretty regularly and there is a lot of unique dialogue that helps make the world feel alive because the characters change and react to your actions in MSQ and side quests. It helped my bf a lot to stop thinking in terms of "progressing the story" and it instead became a treasure hunt to find nuggets of lore and dialogue that most people will never see but gives insight on future events, that those who have been paying attention will be rewarded for noticing. :D

I too was hesitant on playing FF14. My buddy tried getting me to switch from WoW for years. What got me to even try it is he said "Bro theres Glam, Cat Girls and a Boob slider. Being the Transmog fiend that i am i Immediately looked it up and was like OOOOOOOOOO lol. So I started playing when Heavens ward first released and things were VERY different back then. The Story was an EXTREME slog in the beginning i was very much not engaged and could careless. Then i got to prepatch ARR and shit REALLY picked up. Its like the story went from a slogging 5 straight up to 100. Things got insane really fast. But then i got through the patches and lost interest for MANY MANY years. I came back every so often to get a little progression but didnt really get hooked until Shadowbringers.. OMFG Shadowbringers not gonna say much incase you havent made it that far but buckle up because from that point on its a WiLD ass ride. The English voice acting company got replaced for Heavensward onwards, and the acting gets A LOT better. Until Dawntrail, anyway, in which several voice actors are ARR levels of bad - all of them NA voice actors, which makes me think the NA voice director was terrible - but everyone else is good.
That story of going with your friends to Gong Cha really fits well with the game's community - it is a game that encourages people to connect with others and try to work with them. I remember going to Lunarcon last year - an in-game fan "convention" with various TH-camrs and Twitch streamers giving panels and such - and it was a great experience. I went to see Synodic Scribe's lore game show and then went to his meet and greet... well, me and around two dozen other people went to the wrong place (he shouted out the wrong location in chat) and were chatting for twenty minutes before realizing something was wrong. So we all ran over to the correct location and waited in line for 3-4 hours (we were the very back) and just chatted about all sorts of stuff. By the time I met Scribe (he just waved in the last half dozen or so people together) it was nearly 2:00 in the morning and I had to work the next day, but even though I didn't really speak with him (not that I had anything to say), it was fun to be with other people who enjoyed the game.
Even when I'm feeling frustrated with the game (I was not a fan of the Dawntrail MSQ, to make the understatement of the century), the community and people keep me going. (The gameplay is also great fun much of the time.)
I could go on about other stories as well - meeting some of my best friends in the game, etc. - but they all illustrate the same key point: the community is very often a balm for the soul, and it's nice to be around them.
