Exhausted But Relieved After a Brutal 700NM (Raw & Real Sailing)

- For the last 700 nautical miles, we have been bashing our way south into strong headwinds on our way towards the Southern Ocean. The last couple of months of sailing to windward has taken a toll on the boat but probably more so on us. So, as we approach the civilisation of Perth, we’re looking forward to recharging our batteries as well as making a few upgrades to better prepare Nakama for the next leg of our circumnavigation of Australia, where we will be taking our 34-foot sailboat around the bottom of Australia and into the Southern Ocean.

On a larger motor boat in that sort of situation , single screw, no bow thruster we would drop an anchor with just enough chain to swing the ship into the wind then weigh the anchor and berth .
Winning ticket. That is called club hauling. Pretty sketchy under sail.

We did exactly the same thing in Hamilton Island marina in our mono a few years back. Still to this day we have no idea how we didn't right our boat off on the rocks. Got shivers down our spine hearing you guys did the same thing...but I think it happens to most after seeing another couple of boats do the same thing. You did well to try again the next day....I still have panic attacks coming into marinas, 4 years later on a cat after that experience.
Love the authenticity of your channel - it comes across really well. You both looked exhausted when you got to Rottnest. Definitely time for much-needed R&R.
Understanding when to get the f is the sign of a good crew. A beer or five or ten after that is needed.
That was so cool seeing to speaking to college students about your life. I bet that inspired a bunch of people! And question - was Jonah aboard for the "terrifying turnabout?" What did he think of all that?

Wow, I'll bet all those cute nurses at his ER department are checking out the new sailor ! Wow, I'll bet there were a lot of boat parts there ! We had bars in my seaport of Eureka, Humboldt Bay, California where you threw peanut shells on the floor, but I did not know that started with maritime bars.
😂they're in trouble, yeah we will be able to find everything we need without to much drama, wich is a huge bonus, yeah wow! it was a first for us but certainly added to the novelty 😁

Watching that aborted docking I was reminded of a very very old sailing technique called club hauling. Sketchy AF but just the thing in the circumstance. Also, I've tried to get a copy of the book Batavia and they seem to be rare as hen's teeth. I found one used copy that would have cost $110AUD by the time I got it.

110 bucks is a lot for a novel, if you're in Aus, then a second-hand bookshop would often have a copy cheap as chips, or his books would generally be in the public library and they would lend it to you for free?

Goodness it just goes to show even the best sailors have bad days in harbours. We exited our pen once and did a 360 infront of everyone because our rudder and wind didnt like each other and it was a cringe moment hahah

Freeo is such a nice spot, have you come across any big whites sailing that coast? They used to be on the radio every day saying what beach's had sharks when I was living over there.if you are a acdc fan,bon scott grew up in freeo 🤘
