Good effort! Nails the upper register bits perfectly. Probably wisely, she doesn’t attempt the jumps between lower and upper register on “Wuthering” in the lead in to the chorus, that were such a feature of Kate Bush’s earlier work, and are so difficult to hit accurately. Her voice also doesn’t quite get that eerie, other-worldly quality that made the original track dig into your brain and stay there. Perfectly in tune, although my hearing is no longer good enough to pick up autotune without the use of an oscilloscope - so I will err on the side of generosity, and assume that the accurate pitching was all her own work 😊
Quite amazing how video quality got to a point 20 years ago where we can look at performance like this and not immediately realise that it's 20 years old just from the quality of the video.
@@OngoGablogian185 Westenra is perhaps the most competent soprano out there and has said that she knew that she would become a singer since she was 6, has been receiving professional vocal training since her early teenage years and singed a deal with the Univeral Music at 13 and with Decca at 16. Her vibrato and vocal control is quite impressive and she has collaborated with the VIPs of the industry. I suggest you do some research and delve a bit more into her discography.
Excellent performance. A professional opera singer who respects written music to the extreme. "I'm so COLD" (three notes downwards), "Let me in your WINDOW" (three notes upwards). Incredible work. Brava!!!
A lovely young woman and a fantastic voice, tackling a very challenging song (also made daunting by having such a distinctive and iconic original). My only slight quibble is that she speeds through this without quite the emotional expression that the lyrics are supposed to convey and that Kate Bush put into the lines, but still this is really great, and few singers could do it even half as well as this, even ones with years more experience than Hayley had at this time.
Singing this song isn't about "emotional expressions " or other petty excuses or atttempts to compensate for one's vocal shortcomings. In fact, it doesn't allow even the slightest improvisation, as I hear it and feel it. This song is about being a pitch perfect and patient singer . And if you are such a singer- the "magic" will be created along the way, because the composition is also a perfection on its own. Having this in mind, it is almost needless to stress that Hayley Westenra is by far the best concert interpreter of this song , with Kate Bush herself being only in the second place. And needless to say that Kate Bush is a genius as a composer.

I think it’s kind of similar to being an actor in a musical - the performance is more than just the sounds themselves with Kate’s music. The quality and the emotion of the singing is both necessary for it to be good. Also this performance is just faster, which I think takes away from the song.

I have to admit that for years, I couldn’t grasp the meaning of some words unless I looked at the lyrics. I loved the haunting and wicked high-pitched voice of Kate in the original. However, this particular live rendition by Hayley struck me because I could clearly understand the lyrics due to the difference in her vocal quality. It’s a beautiful cover, with the only imperfection being the sound mixing, which dulls the beautiful arrangement, deep bass rhythm, and the ending guitar sweep of the original.

I love and absolutely revere Kate Bush and if this cover was in any way inferior or disrespectful of the original version I would be all over it in criticism but I am not. This was a very worthy and respectful cover. The singer is very talented. This is not an easy song to sing. Well done!

Hardly anybody tries to sing this, because Kate had such a high and unique voice , i think she did a really good cover.
I have to admit that for years, I couldn’t grasp the meaning of some words unless I looked at the lyrics. I loved the haunting and wicked high-pitched voice of Kate in the original. However, this particular live rendition by Hayley struck me because I could clearly understand the lyrics due to the difference in her vocal quality. It’s a beautiful cover, with the only imperfection being the sound mixing, which dulls the beautiful arrangement, deep bass rhythm, and the ending guitar sweep of the original.
