  • CEOs from five of the biggest technology companies, including Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Linda Yaccarino of X and Shou Zi Chew of TikTok, testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee about children’s safety online. Yaccarino, as well as the CEOs of Discord and Snap, are appearing before lawmakers after being subpoenaed by the committee. Senators are expected to grill the tech leaders about the spread of sexual content of children online and their companies’ respective efforts to combat child sexual abuse material, known as CSAM.
Young people’s safety on the internet has been a major focus for lawmakers over the last year. The issue was front and center at a congressional hearing 10 months ago, where lawmakers grilled TikTok’s CEO about potential online dangers to young people.
Libby Casey anchors live coverage from The Washington Post newsroom with analysis from James Hohmann, Geoffrey Fowler, Drew Harwell and Cat Zakrzewski. Rhonda Colvin is live on Capitol Hill. Read more: wapo.st/3u4a2sd. Subscribe to The Washington Post on TH-cam: wapo.st/2QOdcqK

I’m a parent and my son is not allowed on social during weekdays; restricted TH-cam and Minecraft on weekend. I also take the time to audit his iPad and TH-cam videos. This is on the parents, not the companies. But we all know parents are lazy and want the computer and phones to raise their kids. So big daddy government has to save us from ourselves.

I think there was much more going on there before it got to that point, and it starts with the parents. They don’t have free rein to do what they want, and they DO abide by the current law. Oh great, another useless hearing about something parents should be doing and not government.
As far as I know, social media is not a utility so it's not a necessity for everyday living.
It is a parent's job to supervise their children, not someone else.
If they are too lazy or too busy, then don't give them access to social media.
Socal media is not something you stumble into like a newspaper or magazine left on a table.
It requires more time and effort to access and interact with social media. So parents have only themselves to blame for not supervising their own children.

Where are the parents while their kids surf social media? Why are those parent letting their kids surf social media in the first place? It make me wonder if those parent would also let their kids into adult book stores and video stores. I don't' think so. So why are they letting them surf on social media. It's not up to the Government to control their kid's internet activities. It's up to those parent to account for their kids activities, not the other way around. Our hypocritical Congress needs to tell those parent to do a better job in raising their kids and maybe there wouldn't be as much child bullying and child molestation if parent played a more active role in their kid's activities. Stop blaming somebody else for things you can control.

I'm disappointed and I feel like this was a lot of grandstanding with nothing productive being done. I believe all parties are responsible, the government, the corporations, and the parents. I'm hoping that smart, meaningful regulation will be thought through, but probably not. The CEOs got a break all they had to do was get grilled and be interrupted. It is congress job to pass laws to ban children from computers, have then learn to read and write and to use math not a computer.

I respectfully disagree. The computer is not the problem in my opinion. Banning books and public education, not having a wholesome education where children learn critical thinking and common sense is part of it. A MAGA presidential candidate and his MAGA party as role models, a convicted rapist and serial fraudster , grifters, Insurrectionists, traitors as role models is part of the problem. These MAGA grifters lead by the convicted rapist Trump, who are using Social media to terrorize, bully, defame, harass, threaten and hurt anyone they feel threatened by..this is seen by children. Children often copy what they watch at home..Daddy hurting Mommy, by word or physical. They take all this in .. Social media is only a mirror of a society where rape and assault have become normal. The rhetoric of people of power and their role models is what influences children. The moral decline of an civilized society is not Social medias fault. It starts at home. Religion being used as a weapon is also a big factor. Christian Nationalists f.e., they are fascists, they are Nazis, but because of the word Christian people automatically assume it's a "good" religion. This MAGA religion teaches, racism and violence and hate. Children are victims of their environment, whether it's home, or church. Social media is only a mirror, a tool. 😢
