Probably one of the most insane Cinderella stories in this insane league’s history. Going from a record-setting loss total to coming one win away from the conference finals is nothing short of remarkable.
I didn't make it explicit in the video, but I thought it showed a lot of insightfulness and maturity from Kevin Constantine to put Makarov/Larionov/Garpenlov/Ozolinsh/Norton together, and trust them with playing their own decidedly un-Constantinely hockey. For a first-year coach to be open to their style of play working despite how much it clashed with its own, I thought that was an A+ move. I mean, how many times have we heard of coaches and players having irreparable friction due to clashing coaching/playing styles?
The best ones usually do. Joel Quennville was always tolerant of Patrick Kane doing his thing. Scotty Bowman let Lemieux do whatever he wanted so long as he was producing. Good coaches get teams to buy into their system. Great coaches mold their systems to the shape of the team they’re coaching. In the latter case, the buy-in becomes difficult to discern from the players just going out and playing.

As a Sharks fan, this run is weirdly painful for me, maybe because I wasn't a fan of hockey till 97, but it's just every single Sharks playoff run in a nutshell. Right as you can see the mountain top, right as you start thinking "oh my god, this might actually happen!" At the last second the rug gets pulled out from under you in the most gutwrenching way possible. Saying that that though, I still look at this run fondly, that OV line in particular was special.
If I remember correctly the Sharks did well against the Canucks that year and might have had a shot for the finals - but Vancouver also started to get hot at the end of the year.....
It's still the Cow Palace. It was originally called...what it was, the Livestock Pavilion . Which is kind of a Robin Hood Men In Tights "good change" situation. Tom Pederson! The man who appeared in every single pack of hockey cards for the next three seasons.
Thank you so much for the Arturs Irbe love. I've been such a fan of that guy since I can remember for so many reasons, and this is just another one of them. Also thoughts: those Sharks uniforms are so sharp and I never really thought about how long Osgood was in the league, so it was strange seeing him look so young.
93-94 was my first year as a hockey season ticket holder and my first full year following the Sharks - I will always have amazing memories of that year. By far (and its not even close) the loudest sporting event I every went to was game 5 vs Detroit - my ears were still ringing the next morning. It was really super kind of you to release a Red Wing fan exclusive version of this video that's only 33:45 long. I can't imagine what else there would be to tell in this story anyway. Great work!
Johan Garpenlöv hitting the post in game 6 in Toronto haunted us Sharks fans for years. I still think about it from time to time. Oh what could have been.
Another thing that also bothers me was the 3 times they fell to Dallas (none of which even made it to game 7). Plus the 01-02 series was the time they got their first playoff series win in less than seven games (Since their last game 7 win at that time was against St. Louis in the 00 series) against the Coyotes but lost game 7 to Colorado (a few years after losing to them in 99).
Best hockey channel on all of TH-cam. I legitimately look forward to new ones after watching the latest ones. The quality of these are so damn good man!
What’s also incredibly painful in that game 6 between the Sharks and the Leafs is that shortly after Garpenlov hit the crossbar, Sandis Ozolinsh had a perfectly clear view right in the slot to shoot the puck on a 3-on-2 rush, but instead of shooting it, he inexplicably decided to pass it to Larionov at the side of the net who was in no position to shoot. If Ozolinsh had just shot the puck, he would’ve scored and the Sharks would’ve advanced to the WCF.
I absolutely love seeing old footage from the 90's NHL playoffs. They have so much otherworldy charm and wonder to them. Thank you for another great video PHG.
If the Sharks beat Toronto in Game 7, it would have been a #7 and #8 seed Western Conference Final against Vancouver, something that has only happened once in 2010 in the Eastern Conference Final with #7 Philadelphia taking down #8 Montreal.
I doesn’t matter what you decide to show us. Whatever you decide to show us is golden! As a huge fan of everything from the 90’s this was awesome. I even dusted off my hockey cards from that era and put together this team in front of me.
The 3/31/94 game vs Toronto (5-3 win) was the first sporting even I'd ever attended in my life. It was a magical season that no one will ever forget. Thank you for this video. Brought back so many memories!

While this is the greatest turnaround, the 2008 Flyers are definitely up there as well. They finished dead last the year prior and traded away Peter Forsberg during that year, which also saw Ken Hitchcock getting fired and Bobby Clarke resigning. Bringing in Jason Smith and making him captain was seen as laughable back then (as well as bringing in a lot of former Predators between the beginning of the 2006-07 season and the start of the 2007-08 season), but they ended up making it all the way to the conference Final in 2008, which was legit a big shocker, despite being a formidable opponent just 2 years prior. I love videos like this cuz this isn’t a team I would ever think of, and yet this whole video I felt excited and happy for them like I was experiencing it in real time. These are always just so well done
Those 1994 and 1995 teams and upsets of Detroit and Calgary were so memorable and moments that really got the franchise on the map early in their history. However, looking back, it really felt like lightning in a bottle before reality set in, and they had to really build themselves up as a solid, perennial playoff team in the Sutter years. The 2003-04 season had a bit of a similar feel. There was no more Nolan and Selanne. They picked up lesser known guys like Alyn McCauley and Wayne Primeau. They won 1 out of 1st 10 games before finding their groove in late Nov eventually earning the 2 seed and going to the WCF. Honestly, to this day, I feel like that Sharks team played better together as a team than in any other season so far. Excellent video. I was wondering if you were able to find footage of that G6 OT in Toronto of the Sharks having a 2 on 1 and being broken up after the puck carrier decided to pass. I've heard over the years that if he shot instead of passed, they might have won that game. I never saw it, and I'd like to see what happened
@INDLIS What I meant was they earned 1st round upsets beating Detroit in 1994 and then Calgary in 1995. That 1995 schellacking vs Detroit in the 2nd round is what Dan Rusnowsky referred to as the tennis series since the Sharks lost 6-0, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. I remember KTVU, the Fox affiliate in the Bay, didn't even show G1 because they had to show the Cardinals vs Giants game instead handing it off to Sports Channel Pacific and would show their own tape delayed broadcast later in the day (so terrible). I had no idea the live feed was on SC until I was flipping channels. By then Detroit had already scored their 4th or 5th goal.
@INDLIS No, G1 was on a Sunday and was nationally televised on Fox. Hence, KTVU was in charge of bringing the game to the Bay Area. They were notorious for prioritizing their commitments to carry the Giants over the nationally televised NHL games. The ones I remember: 1995 Sharks vs Detroit G1 as mentioned, 1995 SCF G4 (they cut out right after the game so they could show Giants vs Dodgers instead of the Cup celebration by NJ), and they showed Giants vs Arizona instead of Wayne Gretzky's last game in 1999.
I love these, I'm eager to see what team and what year you do the next one of these. Also, there's just something about that old analog footage that really helps the jersey colors pop, especially that Sharks teal.
Thank you for making such a well-done video. I feel the Sharks would have done well against Vancouver in the next round if they would’ve made it; but would’ve struggled against the Rangers in the finals.
As a Brit who loves an underdog San Jose were great to root for, we knew more about the Russian players back then from the Olympics. Plus that look was gold. I loved Irbe but he was frustratingly inconsistent at times, either feast or famine. Great nostalgic video with a minor correction Toronto had traded Glenn Anderson to the Rangers for Gartner that season where he was yet another east coast Oiler to win another cup. 😊
Oh sweet another recap series! 👌 I remember this being the second NHL season I followed through weekly recaps they aired here in Finland. Sharks were never really my favorite team but I remember this year's team well. Irbe with his ugly ass hencoop helmet and the Soviets were always fun to watch. Irbe was basically a poor man's Dominik Hasek but way more of a vibe goalie. If he was in the zone he could shut out anyone, but when he was having a bad spell he was pretty painful to watch. Not so fun fact: Jaroslav Otevrel, the guy who put an end to the losing streak by scoring two goals moved to play in Finland after his short NHL career and got paralyzed after a freak accident where he collided head first with an opponents knee.
22:06- Sabres 4, Islanders 1 Dale Hawerchuk (on the Sabres) scored two power play goals, allowing New York (??) to extend its winning streak to three games- lol nice proofread newspaper editor man
"The Wall" Artūrs Irbe was my man of all underdog goalies! Irbe was mabey never a Ed Belfour, Patrick Roy or Dominik Hasek in the NHL but he was non the less a fine goalie who was a well-known hard worker on- and off the ice that earned him enough respect for his position, but sadly a lot of North Americans just never gave him more credit. 11 goalies was selected before the 2x IIHF World Championship gold medalist (1989 & 1990) in the 1989 NHL draft, with only 2 of them, Olof Kolzig and Byron Dafoe would have real careers in the league allong with Irbe. Bonus was that Irbe was honoured as the best goalkeeper of the 1990 WC tournament and a big reason they won that gold medal. Often if his team(s) lost a game, Irbe not uncommonly was given the blame despite that it was many times not his fault. Heck, even when Artūrs Irbe signed to the Dallas Stars, he was a backup goaltender to Andy Moog and despite having the 2nd best record in entire NHL with 104pts they had no faith in keeping him around. And when he signed to the Vancouver Canucks for the 1997-98 season, Mike Keenan shafted him quickly despite him presenting good numbers as the problem was not the goaltending but a tallent-filled team who played terrible hockey (!) Sean Burke suffered same faith that season. It was not until he became the starter for the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1998-99 season Artūrs Irbe would get his time to shine again and was awarded a spot on the NHL All-Stars roster for 2nd career time where he became the 1st goalie ever to record an assist point in an NHL All-Star game. But his highest point of his career came when Irbe was instrumental in leading the Hurricanes to the 2002 Stanley Cup finals where they fell to the mighty Detroit Red Wings. Artūrs Irbe participated in 11 IIHF World Championship tournaments (1989-1990, 1996-2001 & 2003-2005) for his native Soviet/Latvia and also 2 Olympic games (2002 & 2006). Or his time in the farm league, the IHL where Irbe was a cruzial part of helping the Kansas City Blades win the 1992 Turner Cup championship for 1st- and only time that also awarded him the 1992 James Norris Memorial Trophy as league best goalie + IHL First All-Star Team.
Probably one of the most insane Cinderella stories in this insane league’s history. Going from a record-setting loss total to coming one win away from the conference finals is nothing short of remarkable.

@@dcfog81 But what about the 2000 series win against St. Louis (the same series where Marc Bergavin threw the puck in his own net in game 2)?
Amazing video as always, also Ulf Dahlen had incredible 90s drip
He got a hat trick win in game three against Toronto and a big power play goal in OT in game two against Calgary
I'm a simple man, i see Irbe i like
Yay sharks!
These videos are so entertaining to watch! That one lady screaming after every sharks goal in the leafs series was so annoying to hear lol.
Nice whatever you post I’m still gonna watch 👍
I love these, I'm eager to see what team and what year you do the next one of these.
Also, there's just something about that old analog footage that really helps the jersey colors pop, especially that Sharks teal.
Thank you for making such a well-done video. I feel the Sharks would have done well against Vancouver in the next round if they would’ve made it; but would’ve struggled against the Rangers in the finals.
Thanks Graham, another deep dive video for me to devour. Love these!
Nourishment for the soul. Thank you grahammerman
I remember this being the second NHL season I followed through weekly recaps they aired here in Finland.
Arturs Irbe = “Like Wall”. That was the catchphrase in San Jose at the time
I loathe the Sharks above all others, but your content is so good, I'm here for it---Kings fan since 73
lets fucking go new pinholes graham video
5:11 Wait, Arturs batted that out of mid-air?? Fuckin’ nice.
53:10 That was a gorgeous pass
TY so much! Great story!:) Ozo is the legend:)
It looked like Jamie Macoun was out there for every goal the Sharks scored against the Leafs. Wow, I remembered him as an absolute rock on defence.
To have to play a game on the 38th of December, that was long and difficult month for the Sharks
this channel is awesome, love all the videos you've made so far
Sharks have always been a fascinating team throughout the years. So great in the regular season, but heart breaking in the playoffs.
Another disappointing moment for the Sharks 🦈 were the 3 times they fell to Dallas (all three lost in less than seven games).
Babe wake up, Pinholes Graham did a video about the San Jose Sharks
absolutely incredible video.
I didn’t expect one of my new favorite players to be a Latvian netminder that played 30 years ago and yet here I am…
I remember that run well. I almost forgot that Toronto was in the Western Conference.
Incredible. Absolutely incredible.
22:06- Sabres 4, Islanders 1
Dale Hawerchuk (on the Sabres) scored two power play goals, allowing New York (??) to extend its winning streak to three games- lol nice proofread newspaper editor man
"The Wall" Artūrs Irbe was my man of all underdog goalies!
Artūrs Irbe participated in 11 IIHF World Championship tournaments (1989-1990, 1996-2001 & 2003-2005) for his native Soviet/Latvia and also
2 Olympic games (2002 & 2006).
Or his time in the farm league, the IHL where Irbe was a cruzial part of helping the Kansas City Blades win the 1992 Turner Cup championship for 1st- and only time that also awarded him the 1992 James Norris Memorial Trophy as league best goalie + IHL First All-Star Team.
why did it seem like the same woman kept screaming into the mic every time the sharks scored at home?
It was the mythical San Jose Screecher. Legend has it that after every goal you'll never see her, but she'll always be heard.
@@PinholesGraham Ah! An incredible tale. One to rival that of Bigfoot, or a Stanly Cup Parade in Toronto. Truly magnificent!
New Pinholes Graham video. Time to drop everything for the next hour
Terrific storytelling as usual. Would love to see a video on a past canucks season.
Loved this video, I think k the sharks 1995 first round vs CGY or their 2002 second round vs COL would make for good play past videos
Slapshots, no gap control, random violence. Crazy times
Woooooh new video, I was just watching the Dallas anaheim series again when this dropped
wake up babe, new pinholes graham video
Beauty of a vid. Love ur stuff.
I love the Sharks old logo, looks magnificent. LGRW 🐙 🏒 🤘
I wish they’d just go back to it I mean cmon it’s iconic
44:19 might be the craziest cross check ive ever seen
NHL upsets in this era hit way harder than modern day ones ..league has come a long way
That same lady screaming for every Sharks home goal against the Leafs.
Sharks, Jaguars, Marlins and Hornets - the Mount Rushmore of 90s-era teal
