2009 may have been the best 2nd round ever In addition to this there was Crosby vs Ovechkin, Carolina/Boston, Chicago/Vancouver 27 of a possible 28 games and the one series that didn’t go 7 had a series closing hat trick
This series was the perfect combination of History, entertainment, and pure nasty. This is gonna be a great watch for fans who haven't seen this series ^^
11:21 fun, random fact, when I was watching this game with my dad and his friends one of his friends randomly yelled out Johan Franzen name “ Franzen!!” And then like three seconds later, he scores a goal
Being in the crowd for Game 1 of this series, on the blueline where Brown hit Hudler... that's an experience I've been chasing the 14.5 years. Wings fans were excited, after that we were mad.
Ducks fan since '93, it's a shame that newer hockey fans might be unaware of how deep this rivalry went before realignment. I used to hate the Wings the most because they'd always crush the Ducks in the playoffs. That's what made 2003 so sweet, with subsequent series only making the rivalry grow.
Wings fan chiming in. Totally agree that this rivalry was so outstanding, so underrated! Ducks ruined our year more than once, it went back and forth a lot! So fun to watch. I was always thinking it would be fun to watch Detroit play in the East, and for the west coast game times as a fan it was rough! But as soon as we moved over, the rivalries (Ducks, Avs, Hawks, Stars) all disappeared. It was sad. And the game wasn't the same after. Probably had some to do with the end of the Wings era soon following our move to East but I digress. Fun series for ME to relive! LGRW!
100% agree. I always say the ducks were a nasty rival. Sure it wasn’t as good as some of our other ones, but still criminally underrated. I miss the western rivalries
Yep, I remember being young and my dad always complaining about the ducks, hes always been a huge wings fan and I dont think theres a team he hates more hahaha
Just wanted to say thank you for your videos. Back in 2018 I went to rehab for the first time and tried to get clean from heroin. I was 22 years old and had spent my whole life high so really only had a few interests/hobbies to take up my time and try to figure out who I am. Long story short my whole family grew up a caps fan, I’m from Maryland where nobody at all is into hockey. So in 2018 of course the caps go on that cup run and become champions and I was sober watching every single game on tv, my parents and brother went to the parade in DC. It was just amazing. And now these last couple years ever since the pandemic I’ve been getting into hockey as a whole. Every team. Every player. Idk why but hockey just brings me so much joy. So thank you for these videos, it’s hard to find quality hockey content anywhere these days
I'm so glad to hear that you and yours are doing well, Brian! Before too long, I'll be sure to have a video about the Capitals...maybe even on 2018 👀 Stay tuned! :)
Great video! As a lifelong Wings fan I’ll never forget watching this series my junior year of college. My roommate and best friend was a huge Pens fan and we both knew our teams were destined for a SCFs rematch. It was even more bitter for Pens fans due to the whole Hossa situation. Great memories and unforgettable series in both ‘08/‘09.
Oh man as a wings fan this series had me on the edge of my fckn seat! That game 3 hossa goal being called off made me lose my mind at 1 AM am on a school night. I couldn’t sleep lol this whole series was really tight besides games 4 and 5. Game 7 I couldn’t breathe. This was one of the best tight series I’ve ever seen the wings play where they came out on top the winner. It was a 7 game war between these 2. The ducks and wings go way back and have a huge history against each other. As a kid I loved the ducks because of the movies and loved Selanne and Kariya. This era ducks team with Chris Pronger were such a pain in the ass. They beat us in 07 and this just felt good to get revenge. Unfortunately the wings couldn’t repeat 😔
That no goal call was so bad. IIRC, the ref didn't blow till after the puck was in the net but it was still disallowed under the "intent to blow" rule, which made it even worse. HATED that Ducks team.
Crazy to see how good the mule was even with Babcock fucking with his mental health. Dan Cleary is a local of my home province here in Canada, he brought the cup here the year prior and was the most popular person from NL for a long period of time.
Chris Osgood belongs in the Hall of Fame. Especially now since last year FINALLY lowered the bar for goalies, which was always way too high, and let Barrasso and Vernon in. If Mike Vernon's a Hall of Famer, so is Osgood.
All the Wings veterans said this was the toughest series they ever played in. Lots of players got injuries they played through the rest of the playoffs. Like you say, they were running on fumes in the finals.
An excellent series by two star-powered and physical teams, put together in the style of Pinholes Graham. This was an excellent retrospective, and I'm pleased to see the return of the Playoff Past series!
Wow… just wow… what can I say? I have harassed you for a video on this series for months on end now, and you delivered something even better than what I had anticipated. Everything about this series was nothing but war. Seeing the dueling star power of Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Franzen on one side, and Pronger, Getslaf, Perry, and Selanne on the other is something you don’t see that often in today’s game. Both of their rosters were LOADED. Pinholes Graham, I can’t even begin to thank you enough for this video. Over the past few months you’ve easily become my favorite creator on this entire website, and content like this is exactly why. These Ducks were so easily despised and they seemed to relish it. The release I felt when Dan Cleary scored was so epic. Go Wings!
It's interesting how Anaheim went from a team that almost always clutched up in the playoffs for one decade, and then has a 4 year run of blowing 3-2 series leads with home ice the next.
Pinholes, id love for you to go back and re watch the 2008 Red wings vs Colorado Avalanche series in witch Johan Franzen quietly had one of the greatest playoff performances in recent history. On the NHL records page amid many NHL legends, At number 4, Sits Johan Franzen for the 4th most goals in a single playoff series with 9 in 4 games. The next closest modern era player is Sidney Crosby 08-09 vs the caps where he scored 8 goals..... in 7 games.

Hiller almost pulled an 03 Giggy but those 08 and 09 Wings were just insane with their play driving perfection, ive never seen such suffocating dominance except maybe the 22 Avs. Really no other post lockout team comes close. Ps young Helm was SO FAST! that game 7 goal looked like Bure

1989 LA vs EDM (Gretzky's revenge, Oilers blow a 3-1 series lead)
1986 CGY vs EDM (the only time Flames won the BoA in the playoffs and it went seven)
Imagine what Pinnoles could do with the pathos of poor Steve Smith 💀
need one of these on 2011 BOS-MTL or BOS-TBL. some electric series. great work!
You should cover the 1997 series between the Ducks and Detroit or the 1998 series between Detroit and Dallas.
Need a video on the 2014 WCF Kings vs Blackhawks
Hiller almost pulled an 03 Giggy but those 08 and 09 Wings were just insane with their play driving perfection, ive never seen such suffocating dominance except maybe the 22 Avs. Really no other post lockout team comes close.
Ps young Helm was SO FAST! that game 7 goal looked like Bure
Helm > Bure
The 2008 and 2009 Stanley Cup finals were legendary.
could you go over the 2011 finals with VAN and BOS? I'm a bbruins fan and I was a kid but I just remember so much bad blood from the second the puck was dropped and with the huge moments and bad injures I feel like u could do well over an hour vid on that.
credit to osgood for learning a totally different style of play to stay in the league. its still weird to me seeing him as butterfly goalie
Ducks Redwings was a special rivalry. As a Ducks fan you could say the wings were the most important and memorable opponent for the Ducks in their history.
Extremely common pinholes W. 2004 Flyers vs Lightning ECF could be a great series to cover.
Babe wake up, new Pinholes Graham
2010 Flyers/Bruins when?
