  • This is my feature review of the Gigabyte Z790 Elite AX motherboard. A surprisingly affordable motherboard that packs in some really decent specs with four NVMe ports, PCIe gen 5 GPU support, WiFi 6E and much more besides, all for a very affordable price frankly.
    In this video I'm unboxing it and showing the setup process for the motherboard as I went about building it in the Lian Li Lancool 216 • Lian Li LanCool 216 RG...
    I was surprised to see just how well this motherboard performed considering it's price.
    Highlights include:
    - The potential to RAID multiple PCIe gen 4 drives at x4 speeds
    - Support for DDR5 RAM upto 76000 MT/s
    - Multiple 5V and 12V RGB headers (perfect for my RGB build)
    - understated design aesthetic but not understated features
    - Decent bios settings options
    Lowlights:
    - Some problems with XMP causing boot loops
    - RGB complaints

    I just finished a build with this MB. The M.2 heatsink is huge! Unfortunately it lost out to my Thermaltake Silent 12 cooler for space because it was so tall. It wouldn't allow the locking latch to clip down the cooler. Thankfully I had purchased a 1TB Crucial P5 Plus M.2 w/ a heatsink. I'm still tweaking but I'm really happy with this "work" computer. I've been "testing" with Starfield and Metro for the past week.
    I went with TeamForce (2x16Gb) DDR5 6000Mhz. The XMP profile had no issues with these and overclocked correctly with no issues other than I have no control over the RGB. 1 is stuck on wave and the other is pink.
    I did have a strange issue in Metro when I would walk away or looked away from a NPC I lost their audio. I had also lost the audio on the firearms. So it was like having a suppressor installed. Turns out it was from the Realtek audio driver updates. I had to switch the audio output from 5.1 surround sound back to stereo in order to correct it.

    Just built a photo editing rig with this board; the docs say it has 1-2x2, and 1 2x4 cpu 12v connectors. No, 2-2x4; my PSU had the right plugs, but wish the official docs had it accurate. Nice board, the on-board audio is good, I'm running an 8gb v-board, getting good results after 2 days on line. As another poster, running it with i7 13700k; Noctua CPU cooler; had a bit of issue getting the fans to re-attach, but improvised and got them tight. Built into a Fractal Define 7 case.

    At the end of the month, i will be ordering this board as well but the Elite AX ICE (white) version. I suppose there is no other difference besides the color right?
    Going for a white build with the Lancool III rgb, Corsair dominator,corsair white psu with white cable and the corsair h150i though i am debating myself if it´s worth it to pay 90 euros more to get the one with an LCD.
    I have to agree tho, placing the pump header at the bottom, was a dumb move. Wonder what they were thinking.
    Other than that, i do not see any downside to this board tho i am thankful for the bios reset tip in case i might need it !

    Hey TPP, nice video, what do you think about these contact frames for the socket 1700 platform, I was given one with my motherboard so fitted it but not sure if it makes a difference, also I see you peeled the label off your SSD before putting it in your motherboard, I've read these are special thermally conductive labels, have you done testing and found they a detrimental to the temps staying lower or something? Thanks

    • @TheProvokedPrawn
      @TheProvokedPrawn  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't used a contact frame yet, but do plan to see how well they work and what difference they make. I have heard it can be significant but I believe that's a long term experience because the whole point is the CPU bends over time on the standard setup so cooling becomes worse long term but the contact frame stops that. Which is interesting.
      As for peeling the sticker, I actually did that for an experiment into whether you should. th-cam.com/video/YUJKyA-q7Zs/w-d-xo.html

    So I have a set of precision Phillips head screwdrivers and the 9/64ths seems to fit very well into the M2 heatsink screws, but they won't budge except for one. Seems like they were put on carelessly with a powered screwdriver during manufacturing. The handles on my screwdriver set are made for delicate work, not like the one you are using. What screwdriver do you use for the M2 heatsinks?

I forgot to remove the plastick sticker on the ssd itself, and just placed on its heatsink case (it came with its own heatsink. why risk anything? You placed plastic into something that was made to dissipate heat...which infers there will be heat in that location...plastic melts. Just take it out.

    • @user-zo4ne1lp3d
      @user-zo4ne1lp3d ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello. I have the same board, and I also could not find information about the bottleneck in the very first top slot under the m2 ssd. I assembled a completely new computer, as a result I installed one disk in the first slot, the video card does not cut the lines, the RTX 4070Ti video card works in PCIe 16x 4.0 mode in full mode. So, you can safely install the most hot disks in the topmost slot. And it cuts down the speed, as I understand it on motherboards for AMD

    • @shattla
      @shattla ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-zo4ne1lp3d Thank you! So it only cuts down speed on AMD cpu's? That's interesting, I'll be sure to spread the word to some friends. Seems I'll have to open up my PC and put my m.2 in the top most slot. Hopefully I see some performance improvements :).

Someone told me the less power you're putting through your PCI-E pathways, which has little to do with Sata and more to do with Graphics card bandwidths.
      Anything past the first slot, and you're taking power from your PCI-E slots, so where you put your 4090Ti, you won't get full power to that.
