  • Welcome to the Retro Tech Loft, thanks for stopping by, it is much appreciated!
As part of a new Hot Wheels video series of iconic cars from TV and film, I am wanting to complete some customisations of existing car models to meet my collecting requirements.
    Here is my first attempt.
Magnum PI was on TV in the early 80s when I was a nipper, and I remember it was the first time I had seen a Ferrari here in the UK. It looks quite dated by today's designs, but in the mid to late 1970s, it was top notch and very impressive.
As the genuine Hot Wheels 308 GTS QV (Cabriole) models are quite expensive on the S/H market (Upwards of £30 + p&p on eBay in the UK) I had the idea of converting a racebait 308GTB (Hard Top) into a GTS. They are virtually identical, but range from 99p to £3.99.
During the filming of this conversion video I did happen across a real Hot Wheels 308 GTS in the UK for less than £10. It was listed incorrectly as a 308 GYS, so no one bid on it except me :)
The real GTS model is in yellow which does not match anything seen on TV, so that will be a future conversion video to add proper 5 spoke wheels with real rubber tyres, and paint it red. Then it will be the Magnum PI car.
With this being my first attempt, I do not have an airbrush, so painting is the old fashined way with a brush and thinners. As I get more confident with the Hot Wheels stuff, I will buy a portable airbrush and hopefully my conversions will look more professional.
I have at least 10 conversions that I need to complete. These being the stock/retail versions of Hot Wheels model vehicles seen in TV and film to their actual TV and film counterparts (As an example, I have a racing spec Saleen S7 in the wrong colour and full of decals, that matches the' 'GOD' car driven by Jim Carey in Bruce Almightly, but this needs to be paint stripped and re-painted the correct silver colour)
All vehicles will be displayed in the wall mount case you can see on the video thumbnail. I do have some vehicles that do not fit into the diplay case, so the last video in this series will be a showcase video detailing all the model vehicles I have, their make and model and which TV/Film they were from.
Keep an eye out for future Hot Wheels conversions and refurb videos!
    Thanks for watching
    See you all next week!
