The Sopranos was great because it worked on every level. It was funny, exciting, dramatic, tragic, deep, poetic etc. It could be enjoyed viscerally or analyzed closely because there was so much beneath the surface. Plus, it was unique in that it somehow used inarticulate characters to expertly explore themes that delved into philosophy (primarily existentialism and ethics), theology, psychology, sociology, literature etc. It just feels inspired from start to finish.
The story is ultimately a tragedy, a slowly sinking ship, where Tony Soprano along with many other mobster characters in the show ultimately fail in the battle of reconciling the brutality and evil of their professions with the yearning for a more wholesome human experience, perhaps even a desire to be good instead of just accepted as such, but only in sacrifice to their hubris. Because the life is revealed as a long running bastardization of what the mob set out originally to be as a means to contend with the yoke of oppression. Once recognition of humanity had already been attained however it served really only as a means for participants to bid for the role beyond peerr to master, tragically in sacrifice of the very dignity earned in collective struggle.
What was that last night's reading assignment? I actually agree. The mob was soaked up by corporations who we know use the same exact tactics under the guise of it being participatory rather than extortion. Like...they set the terms and if we don't kick up we get punished and I gotta say not being able to see your kids or being locked in a cage isn't much better than getting beaten up.
I'd say Sopranos is definitely the best acted show of all time and has probably the most complicated and greatest character of all time. James Gandolfini puts that show on another level. Story wise, it's kind of uneven the last few seasons. They should have ended it in 5 tight seasons like originally planned. Then it most definitely could be called the greatest show of all time. Without James Gandolfini, though, it might just barely be Top 10. He really made that show and I think it's the greatest television actor of all time.
