    I have a question is animation the same as stop motion like can I make a flipaclip animation would it be the same as stop motion ?

    • @StopEverything
      @StopEverything  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's a very good question!
      The answer though might be a little complicated as I don't think there's any sort of "industry standard" for what stop motion is. Some may argue that flipaclip wouldn't be considered stopmotion as it's all digital, but many consider a normal flipbook (done on something physical like a stack of post it notes or the corner of a textbook) as a real stopmotion. The idea I guess being that SM shouldn't be digital? There's a whole argument to be made for both sides of this question and I don't think there really is an answer sadly.
      I will personally say that in my belief, flipaclip should be considered a kind of SM. I don't see why not. There's enough digital overlap into this style of animation now, the only real difference between flipaclip and a stack of post-it notes is the convenience.
      Just for fun, I'm gonna argue it. I really liked your question, haha, don't mind me.
      Saying that anything digital shouldn't be considered SM is a bit brass, considering how much modern animators rely on it. From the programs used to take each photo, to the image manipulation to remove unwanted rigs and elements of puppets (like in Coraline, the puppets all had a seam across the face where the mouth would be changed, which was digitally removed later) and even to the puppet creation themselves. Many SM movies now use 3D printed faces and heads that they replace on the set, which means every scene has been animated fully in 3D first in typical modeling software, and then is 3D printed and added to the puppets. Show's such as South Park started as SM, but are now made digitally to have the same look while saving production time. In the past these all would have just been done differently, such as clay heads would be made by hand instead of on computers, painted backgrounds instead of greenscreens, South Park still uses a similar workflow but is now expedited by the use of computers.
      Before I had a good camera, I made what I considered SM's on my computer, taking screenshots of my desktop or using microsoft powerpoint; it had the same workflow, just digitally instead of physically. Even now I often blend the two. Any lip-syncing I've done has been added in post production because I wanted to make sure it was timed correctly and perfectly visible to the camera.
      In conclusion, to rule out modern technology from the standard of "Stop Motion Animation" is simply to remove one of the many tools in the toolbox that makes up the art form. This has been my TED talk.

    • @StopEverything
      @StopEverything  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That actually makes perfect sense! If it's something as intricate as a logo I'll usually animate in reverse, this way you can take all the time you need to make it perfect, right at the beginning. It does make movements a little tough, seeing as you have to do all the rules of animation backwards, but you'll get the hang of it

      When I animated everything, I had the heads flipped around so that the face was solid yellow. Then using a combination of Adobe flash and after effects, I drew the faces myself and composited them in.

    Can you just shoot video and clip frames in an editor? The post editing would take longer but it seems like the filming would take much longer. I’m asking because I’ve never attempted stop motion so there might be something I’m unaware of that makes this a bad idea. I’m considering starting a diy maker/building channel and I can’t find anyone else that has that style

    • @StopEverything
      @StopEverything  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're saying what I think you're saying, the main problem would be file size, and that some cameras have a limit of how long you can record, but if you don't have a remote, this is one way you can help avoid camera shake! You are right though, this would take quite a bit longer to do, but feel free to give it a try! If you look up Rhett and Link's "T-shirt battle" I believe the first one was done with this method

    • @StopEverything
      @StopEverything  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just realized, I did this some time back for a project. It's really good for short animation shots when you can't conveniently take the picture. So if your camera is mounted in an odd place, or if you're trying to mix animation with live action, this method helps it blend better

    • @StopEverything
      @StopEverything  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha, so since I was trying to do this as a sort of "lesson" I wanted to cover a lot of options for starting out. For this shot I probably wouldn't have done any of them, but thought it best to show how to do the storyboard, scripting, and yes, the previz. For more complex shots it can help to draw something up like that in adobe flash (now adobe animate) or a similar program. It's just a faster form of animation so it helps to iron out the look you might want before putting the time and effort into stop motion.
