If you are far in an animation and you accidentally bump the camera, just change the angle. Unless the cut to the angle is awkward, then just redo the animation. That way it doesn't make your animation choppy and you don't have to remake it. I bump my camera a lot and this helps me save some time.
The fact you mastered 8, 12, and 24 frames so easily, is like, honestly impressive. I adored the creativity you had for the scenes you made. That was the most interesting detail for me at least. And also, I appreciated those timelapses. Plus the sped up clock is always a treat to look at. Awesome vid and animation!
one thing i knew was gonna be annoying was the arm to keep the rig still so i did the easy thing by spray painting and taping the helping hands so i can chroma key the entire arm out. did that way before i even started my first stop motion so i wouldnt have to go through the tedious process of after effects and could worry about the rough touch ups to feel confident in my several dozen work and become more detailed in after effects before i worked on streamlining my blending in after effects
I’ve been animating for a while now, and considering this was your first time doing stop motion animation, I gotta say this was incredible! You learned everything so fast. The only thing I think you missed was light flicker. But other than that, it was awesome! Plus I loved the fact that Mando was still moving in the background!
Thanks so much! Yeah the first couple frames I shot were really bad cause I was just using a regular light bulb, but I switched to an led light I had laying around, but definitely could have used a better solution for that. Glad you enjoyed!
If you are shooting with the same background all the time, I would recommend wrapping the prosthetic that holds the model in green and basically create a mask for it in your software to replace it (green screen). Great job!
As a small stop motion animator, it's truly difficult yet rewarding. Personally, I like making lower FPS animations because I like how it looks, plus its easier. However, you CAN boost an animation with certain FPS boosters if you want an easier time. A personal issue for me is the lighting. It's hard to be consist with clouds or unreliable lightbulbs.
Yeah that would be interesting to try boosting the fps! And yes, the lighting is so tricky!! I found an LED that didn't have too much flicker, but I also did a de-flicker effect in post-processing to help a bit more
Definitely can be months and months to make a stop motion but that just depends on how many frames per second you choose. It also depends on how long you want your animation to be and how much movement/detail you want shown. I've been making stop motions for years for my family since I was a little kid but im thinking about posting some on TH-cam eventually
Being someone who previously has done stop motion, I really enjoyed this. You don’t just have the stop motion correct, you also have the story correct.
Wow that’s awesome, and yeah I’m really glad I tried it out! I think trying new things in general is just a great way to learn new skills and better appreciate things you didn’t know as much about. Will definitely have to do more at some point 👍
I’ve been doing stop motion for 10 years now and I’m genuinely amazed at how good you are just starting out! Great job man! Keep doing it if you like it cause you’re very good at animation!
Thanks!! Yeah if I do more stop motion in the future I think it would be interesting to use some figures like that with less joints cause I’m sure it’s a different kind of challenge!
Thanks!! Yeah totally agree that it's taken for granted, and it was just a lot of fun to learn more about what actually goes into making a scene. Really makes me appreciate the amount of work that goes into making everything from a 5 second clip to a feature film!
When I was a teen back in the late 1970's, I was doing stop motion animation with a super-8 film camera which did not have a single frame shutter! Talk about being rough animation, but I had so much fun. I was inspired by Ray Harryhausen, a stop motion animator famous for the Sinbad movies as well as quite a few monster movies. He told a story about animating the hydra for a movie, how keeping track of seven heads was difficult. Then he got a phone call and when he returned, he couldn't remember where he was, so he had to start all over. I caught the Mandalorian moving behind you before you turned to look at it. Which reminds me; I meant to comment how well you did in erasing your rig from the sequences. Your compositing is good too.
I did some stop motion in film class in high school in the mid-80s.... at least our super-8 had a trigger for advancing by frame. We had the Rancor for Jedi moving billiard balls around and wreaking havoc. I'm looking at getting back into it soon.
I like that when you commentate during the editing process you show you face. It uses more of the what would be empty screen and to me brings more joy to the video
Thanks!! That’s great feedback! Definitely wanted to show certain things on camera while also showing the time-lapse, so glad to hear that that was a positive :)
Animation is animation, and honestly I liked the first (8fps) one the best. You really got the acting down, which basically communicated how clumsy he was at first, and then how he got his footing.
Gosh, can't tell you how much I love this video! To me, those 3 attempts turned out absolutely amazing. All the time, the time and effort you put into it make this video so incredibly entertaining and fun to watch, and of course, informative
ANIMIST is someone whom I personally love watching and I've been watching i him from the start and seriously he just nails it... Man you are also doing a greattt job and you also made a great video on how these animations work. Thanks btw 🤝😁
looks good, I knew an animator who did an hour long film, took him 14 years, using a Bolex and figures with adjustable skeletons. Turned out spectacular.
I LOVED this video! i am also wanting to get into animating and creatin models. It's nice to hear someone's perspective of trying this the first time. One thing that would've done is paint the rig Green and having a shot of the background that doesn't move as a behind the individual shots. There might still be some corrections but it might've helped it go a bit quicker!
This is awesome ! I started stop motion with some Gears of War action figures. Pro tip, before starting the shot, always click a photo of the background so that you can use it as background layer for all the upcoming frames. Its good for maintaining lighting and easier to clean up rigs without having to worry about ruining the image
Stop motion is my absolute favorite movie genre to watch, a good stop motion is pure art because it takes months/years to just move and take pictures of the dolls for a full movie. Coraline is the most beautiful stop motion movie I have seen, I can watch it multiple times and be amazed of how well it is made. The newest stop motion movie I watched that amazed me was The House, the cat story at the end is deep and the cat dolls are super good looking for a stop motion movie. I love all stop motion movies for what they are because of the dedication.
A technique I use to make my stop motion more fast pace is try skipping a couple frames of motion when animation to capture the speed of the character while retaining a steady fps
We all start from somewhere! I’m glad you finally have decided to do stop motion! I’ve been doing stop motion for a while, so I’m really glad that I see someone who is just beginning!!! Best of luck to you
For your first attempt at animation this is actually pretty good. Tools such as grids, onion skinning, rotoscoping etc… are really useful for improving and maintaining your skills. For getting the character back to the same position rely on onion skinning and for bumping the Camara usually it doesn’t matter (things such as building in Camara shake can help fix that).
Appreciate that! I’m working on another project right now 🤫 and hopefully I can improve in a lot of those areas (I posted a Short tease a few days ago)
I've been in love with stop motion ever since I saw the Box Trolls when it came out... I focus primarily on Lego stop motion, but your video has gotten my itching to try something similar with a very articulate spiderman figure I have...
That's awesome, I hope you give it a go with an action figure! That's exactly how I felt when I saw Box Trolls! I grew up watching some claymation stuff like Chicken Run, but the movement and art direction in that movie was like nothing I had ever seen before in stop motion (or at least made note of)
You can always use a physical mask either luma or chroma to mask out your rig and make keying out things easier. Also you can shoot in a format that records depth of field info and othe metadata that can make it easier too.
In my opinion stop motion is something anyone can do but if you are making a big budget movie like coralline or paranorman it most likely will take months to get a little bit finished, because you have to not only animate one or two characters you need to animate the background characters and if it’s windy you need to perfectly animate the trees moving and the leaves rustling, but if you are at home then you probably could make one with an action figure in a fairly short amount of time, like one time I made a stop motion that was 46 seconds that didn’t have a background and it took like 10 hours, but one time I animated another 46 seconds animation that had a person and something being built in the background, and it took me about two days, but another time I animated another 46 second animation that had a bunch of backgrounds and a bunch of different stuff, and it took 3 weeks, the amount of time spent on an animation is based off of what you want to do with it, one 15 second animation could take 1 hour for someone, but another 15 second animation from another could take 1 month, it depends on what you wanna do
Very cool! I used to do (very rough) stop-motion fight scenes with my GI Joes when I was a kid. I wonder if you could avoid masking out the rig by painting it green and putting and chroma-keying it out? I did a project last year that had a stop-motion component and learnt two main things: 1) use a remote shutter, so you don’t movie the camera when pressing the shutter button 2) keep camera on manual-focus, so the focus doesn’t change frame to frame, especially if the subject’s distance from camera changes. Great work!
If you are far in an animation and you accidentally bump the camera, just change the angle. Unless the cut to the angle is awkward, then just redo the animation. That way it doesn't make your animation choppy and you don't have to remake it. I bump my camera a lot and this helps me save some time.
That’s a great tip that I’ll definitely keep in mind for any future stop motion projects!
You’re right. Thanks a lot
Your the first feature on stop motion studio
Wish i knew that before i scrapped a ton of my animations 😂
I do that to😂
Can we all take a moment to appreciate the Wilhelm Scream in the second version? Well played!
Dude you progressed so quickly! I really love the dancing animation, its great! 🤌
Thanks so much! I still can’t believe that one actually turned out haha 😅

Yes very, but as an adult you have more money (better equipment), more brainz and more patience. I didn't have that cuz i was like 9-10 when starting.

Great job!
I use 12 fps for my stop motions. And the dancing looks incredible! I love how you used almost all of Mando's moving joints.
Thanks!! Yeah it was fun having so many joints to work with. I imagine Lego would be a whole other type of challenge since the joints are more limited
@@sam-beige lego is pretty easy there just some parts that are challenging
Actually I find it easier, I make stop motion on my channel btw… you are way better than me when I first started! Good job!
I use 10 fps
i use 24 fps
Wow! I wish I could be that fast at learning. True dedication.
Also, I love how Mando moves on the book at 6:20 and at the end.
As a small stop motion animator, it's truly difficult yet rewarding. Personally, I like making lower FPS animations because I like how it looks, plus its easier. I go in my room with no extra lighting from the outside so i pull down the blinds and i use my lamp it works great
I do playmobil aminations so 24 fps seems useless, 8 or 12 is cool
Definitely can be months and months to make a stop motion but that just depends on how many frames per second you choose. How the hell did your dance turn out so well. What a stopmotion prodigy 🙏
Haha idk about prodigy! I referenced a dance to help because I can't dance like that lol but I was happy when it finally turned out.
Being someone who previously has done stop motion, I really enjoyed this. You don’t just have the stop motion correct, you also have the story correct.
Thank you so much, yeah the story was a lot of fun to come up with!
I’ve been making stop motion videos since 5th grade and this is so cool. I’m always glad to see new animators

As an animator, I can say you did a great job! I personally animate with Mega (formerly Mega Blox/Mega Construx) Halo figures.
Thanks!! Yeah if I do more stop motion in the future I think it would be interesting to use some figures like that with less joints cause I’m sure it’s a different kind of challenge!

I wonder if you could avoid masking out the rig by painting it green and putting and chroma-keying it out?
I did a project last year that had a stop-motion component and learnt two main things:
1) use a remote shutter, so you don’t movie the camera when pressing the shutter button
2) keep camera on manual-focus, so the focus doesn’t change frame to frame, especially if the subject’s distance from camera changes.
Great work!
