    Not the most practical weapon, i'd say, but it's genuinely very interesting to see. I always find it fascinating to look at styles that merge armed and unarmed combat, and for that, i can think of no better weapon.
    I'd love to learn more about this. Keep up the good work, i love your videos.

      Oh no, they're very practical. It's basically a Monkey's Fist. They're easy to conceal and don't look like a weapon. Plus, they were ID cards back in the day, so everyone had one. It's great if you have no weapons on hand and need to defend yourself.

    I can see how you'd underestimate his reach with that thing. A good hard chunk of mahogany upside your temple would be a real shock. It was surprisingly effective and you can see how a person could get good with it with practice. it would be easy to conceal as well.

    Great self defence weapon in skilled hands vs street style assailants i.e (unarmed, knives, up to bat sized weapons), but against an armed warrior like a swordsman or spearman not so great. Also why is it that so many modern weapon schools skimp out on wrestling training? There's a reason why wrestling was taught and practiced in militaries around the world until relatively recently. Kendo guy was pretty lost when the other guy managed to close distance.

    • @Skyfighter64
      @Skyfighter64 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The short and simple answer to why Kendo-ka don't practice wrestling is because, at the end of the day, Kendo is a sport. A sport with specific rules, and unarmed/wrestling combat is outside the context of said rules.
      If that Kendo-ka were instead primarily a practitioner of Kenjutsu, the more traditional martial art of the Samurai, and used kendo as a form of side training/sparring, this might be a different story.

      If you know what you're doing and don't mind getting your hands cut if you fail then grabbing a sword blade is a viable option.
      It actually shows up in historical sources, not only as a means to control your opponent's blade in emergencies but also to expand your options with your own sword.

    • @parksnewbornportraiture4989
      @parksnewbornportraiture4989 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yang_yin if you grab the blade tightly, you actually can avoid being cut. The edge cuts from sliding. Keep the blade from moving, and you’ll avoid being seriously cut long enough to close in.
      It’s a very risky move, as you need the blade to stop moving first, but it’s one that is actually taught in many HEMA disciplines.

  • @Ryomichi
    @Ryomichi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The traditional weapon guy after getting hit many times, evolve into his final boss form. He saw through the imaginative sword and treat it like a broom stick. I say the sword wins if it is a real weapon fight. Smacking sword to parry made the string wrap around the blade and detach. So the wooden thing will just fly off without the string.

    I would say this weapon is very dangerous,
    1st. it is unusual, so you most likely never encounter one until it really happen, and then it is too late to formulate a counter attack technique.
    2nd. and the most dangerous part is the attack range of this weapon is far beyond most people think it would be. And even they know it beforehand, it is very difficult under pressure of a real fight to adjust to such attack range variation.

    Weapons like this "disabled stick" require more aggressiveness and closing distance, which is EASY to accomplish when you know you won't die. If the sword was metallic and sharp, the other guy wouldn't be so aggressive and try to close distance.
    It would be amazing as a side surprise weapon to complement your main weapon though.
    Also, Im an idiot, so I think the best way to fight off weapons that need to close in to get a fighting chance, is to prevent them from getting close by keeping the point towards the opponent and thrusting. I don't know. Opinions?

    • @matthewbreytenbach4483

    Imagine if a sword swivels elastically on its guard. It will not carry through nearly the same amount of energy (and do damage).
    Same goes for nunchucks and flail type weapons (especially short ones). Even if you get a non lethal strike through to someone that gets a bit dazed, if he has a sword you're 99% dead unless you then disarm him, and you'd have to make past his blade to do that.
    Still interesting to watch.

    In the comments, I saw them criticizing the part of the attempt to attack even though they grabbed the blade with their hands or were hit by a sword.
    However, it was confirmed that the full version agreed that the sword could be held by hand, and even though it was hit by a sword
    it usually moves when trying to attack or when blocked by hand.
    th-cam.com/video/8UqetQdWFMw/w-d-xo.html
    Of course, it's not that there's no violation of the rules.
    But another agreement was that if both sides were hit by a clean hit, they wouldn't move.
    Considering that the swordsman only attempted a head attack, the swordsman appears to have played a handicap match that considered only the head attack a clean hit, and this part of the video did not fit his head properly, so it can be seen that he attempted the attack.
    + The writing may be awkward because you used a translator.

      If you grabbed a real sword or knife then a twist of the blade or it being jerked away from you would cut off some pretty important fingers. Generally frowned upon to practice something that would be detrimental

    Interesting but the guy without the sword would of been killed many times.
    Plus he should of stopped when his opponent stopped (not nice manner👎)

      & it's unclear that the person with the sword would have been seriously injured by any of the strikes landed with the wooden weapon.

      With a sword it's easy to tell when the end of the fight is: "I slashed you and now you're dead/unable to move." With unarmed fighting/weapons without a decisive "killing blow," it ends with "this is when I beat you to death so you can't fight anymore." When sparring, you need to simulate the same thing before the fight ends.
      It's not bad manners, just different win conditions.
