    A scythe is made into an infinitely superior weapon by straightening out the angle of the blade, making it kind of like a bill hook. I believe that the later guisarme was based off of the scythe where the blade was made as more of a straight extension of the pole. Gives it more reach, allows thrusting and swinging attacks, while still keeping the chopping strength of the conclave blade. The Chinese Gou Lian Qiang is like a somewhat straightened out scythe blade with a spear point added.

    • @Henbot
      @Henbot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      @@Henbot A scythe is a "pole arm." It's a weapon on a pole. It's just not a terribly efficient pole arm since it chooses to reduce its potential reach.
      Most "pole arms," as people think of European weapons like bardiche, guisarme, glaive, etc. were originally based on farming implements like scythes, bill hooks, and pitch forks.

      I wouldn't say a glaive is superior. And I like glaives. Reach is nice, but nothing bypasses defence like a scythe. In the video we watched multiple times as the scythe was blocked and still struck easily. Furthermore, very few people train their defence against strikes from behind from an opponent in front of them. The second you get past the striking line to close, the usual way to deal with polearms, you open yourself up to a pulling strike.
      When a scythe strike comes in, you have to move back, because you can't parry it, and moving forward just means you get pull cut from behind and if you're constantly stepping back vs a pole arm that has Reach on you, it makes it very hard to win.

    What surprises me is that over the many discussions regarding the viability of non-war scythe type scythes, I've never heard anybody (except maybe Skallagrim with the examples he worked with) talk about the many parallels that scythes share with historical weapons. Namely:
    The Horseman's Pick
    The Bec De Corbin
    The Lucerne Hammer
    The Gē, or Chinese Dagger-axe
    The Bellbeaker Halberd
    All these except the latter two examples are just scythes if the blade was thickened, shortened, and not meant to cut. Whenever I see scythes used in fiction, it always makes me think that piercing attacks are what would be most effective with a standard scythe made for combat without turning it into a glorified glaive with a convex edge. Just put a spear head on the thing like examples 2 and 3, and we might be on to something there for a somewhat viable weapon. Of course, the composition of the blade may still be up to question (how long do you make the blade, how thick should the blade be, would keeping the edges sharp be unnessecary for the job it's meant to do, would the examples listed here make a scythe outclassed for a niche other than unarmored/lightly armored opponents, etc.), I'm just wondering why everyone is so focused on the cutting aspect of the scythe when its ability to piece appears much more apparent. The examples I listed should at least show that there has been precedent for weapons with the scythe's general body plan.
    Edit: I think Shadiversity talked about the parallels between scythes and bec de corbin, or at least something to that effect.
    Edit 2: Apparantly, many people in the comments here are talking about what I mentioned, so I guess my commentary on the matter was just superfluous.

    Really nice fight!
    Being repurposed farming tools, scythes are not exactly ideal as weapons. But if you made one from scratch for fighting, you could:
    1) have the edge aligned with the shaft
    2) sharpen both sides of the blade, so you could attack effectively with pokes
    3) have a bit thicker blade to make it more durable
    4) have an oval shaft for easier edge alignment

      @@gipsymelody1268 Yes, they are everywhere, but in battle they first play a role after the distance for pole-arms has been breached. Some cultures (e.g. Chinese and Japanese) even had pole-weapons with sword length blades. And pikes of four metres need quite a bit of training - especially when used in formations. And a pole-axe needs some training too.
      In historical accounts swords are mainly used as a side arm for the middle distance (quite often with a shield which has also been used in combination with pole-weapons). In the short distance knives ot daggers became important.
      Roman soldiers have been conscripted for 20 years, so they had a lot of time to train - and they carried a shield (sputum), spear (pilum) and a sword as a back-up weapon (gladius). The Chinese call the spear the queen of weapons. With the introduction of guns, the bajonet made them to a kind of pole-weapon.
      Against amoured opposition a pole-axe or a warhammer is in general more effective (but ypu can of course half-sword).

      Had the kendo guy being more aggressive to close-in, at the same time scythe guy launching an attack, kendo guy may have being more advantageous.
      Scythe has more advantage in the longer range/reach, yes. But it has disadvantage in the duration needed to launch/complete one attack.

    I think the schythe has a huge "experience" advantage in that a schyte user trained how to counter a sword (common weapon), but a swordsman didn't train much in how to counter a schythe (rare weapon)
    And indeed the swordsman starts getting a lot better in the second half of the video after he gets used to it. Too bad in a real encounter he'd be already dead :)
    To make a parallel, it's similar to lefties in fencing - at least at a beginners level: they have an advantage because people are used to fighting righties. At advanced levels it evens out because there are quite a few lefties
    But still.. I feel if a swordsman was properly trained against a schyte he'd be able to exploit a lot of weaknesses (shcyte is heavier, cannot stab, and opponent can grab the shaft)

      i don't think it's that the swordsman is untrained in the matchup
      it's litterally that the weapon difference is HUGE !
      all the Scythe guys has to do is go for a reach with a circular blow, and 50% times it will land. 50% the opponent will dodge but by getting out of range, getting no real advantage, back to square 1. The ONLY move the swords man CAN do in order to win, is a complex 3-part move, where he 1-Parries (...somehow?? already pretty improbable!!) 2- grabs the pole 3- finally strikes
      A lot of things can go wrong. When you rely on a 3-phase move with an improbable start, VS the oponent can do the most basic thing and still have the upper hand the vast majority of the time !!
      Personally, if I got in a fight against a weapon that has TWICE my range, AND I cannot parry... !!! then I'd JUST RUN.

    I’ve personally thought about designing my own scythe based off of criticisms of it.
    A spike at the top of the pole would make it more of a threat instead of purely relying on the scythe blade.
    Or perhaps a smaller scythe blade behind the bigger blade, kind of like the hook on a hammer. It would give more opportunities to hook and disarm, while giving a counter balance to the broad forward blade. The extra weight would also make a fearsome piercing weapon.
    I wish I thought about the smaller hook at the bottom. I love how he used it to hook around weapons and propelling the blade in a single motion.

Make the angle on the scythe slightly more severe and sharpen its back edge so it can do some push cuts while maintaining its ability to hook and reach past blocks. Nice video. It is easy to see that the swordsman have little experience facing spears-type of weapons using katana. Specially a scythe type, which is a spear made for cutting and stabbing using side-ways attacks. In my experience, katana have a hard time against this kind of weapons. Tho, it is something that with years of practice against it, you can do lots of things.

    Badass. The scythe is such a cool weapon.
    I know it wouldn't be conventional, but I wonder why the outer edge of the scythe was never sharpened (at least to my knowledge). I know it excels as a piercing weapon, but it seems like keening the outer edge would simply make it more lethal.

    My preferred stance vs weapons with range is O Gasumi, Ko Gasumi, or Te Ura Gasumi. I can parry and counter fairly well vs a spear, staff, polearm or greatsword with these. 2-hand scythe is tricker but it's more viable than using a standard offensive guard like Seigan No Kamae. Anything with range is going to own that.

  • @hannuback
    @hannuback ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you look at medieval polearms, it seems like they also had this kind of hooking possibilities. People had a lot of experience with scythes so it's likely that similar weapon designs felt comfortable even for those who had little experience from fighting. Farming tools probably had more influence on weapon designs than they get credited.

    I haven't watched many of these; are they meant to be primarily just entertainment rather than accurate, exploratory, or educational?
    What purpose does the small scythe/hook facing backwards serve? Seems like it would be way more functional if you don't have to rotate your main scythe offline every time you want to employ the bottom end and then rotate it all again to bring the main back around to offend your opponent...

    • @tankmaster6062

    • @Lockke_
      @Lockke_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tankmaster6062 Give yourself more credit, that's a good thought. Weight for counter balance makes sense and would be very practical to make the weapon easier to wield and possibly quicker. However, you could achieve the same result with a forward orientation of the bottom end so this doesn't explain the reversed orientation imo.

  • @zacharyjeffares8158
    @zacharyjeffares8158 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is why the katana was a secondary weapon. The blade is too short in order to help close the distance of the sword - the difficulty is, however that this is a scythe - not a spear. Getting around to the non edge side is the main goal for the sword to reach the strike zone. This can become very hard still because it’s a sword against a pole arm

    Change: instead of having a smaller hook facing you on the bottom, have a a spike/spear tip. Keeping that threat while reducing it's likely hood of hitting you.
    Add: a small spike sticking out opposite of the main blade to allow for more of a puncturing attack against armored opponents along with opening up some other techniques

    something that i find a lot of people don't know about the scythe is that when used in war it was sharpened on both sides of the blade so you could slash with the front & back edge of the blade in a swinging motion, or if you wanted to you then can just use it like a bo staff with a weighted end by flipping the scythe so the blade is facing towards you, then you can actually use the outside edge to slash as you swing it like a bo staff.
    a few slashes i like are pretty simple the first one you just swing the back of the scythe upwards to either hit your opponent with the pole end of the scythe, slash them with the backside of the blade or deflect their weapon and then you bring the the scythe down on your opponent with the exception of if you hit them with the pole, if you hit with the pole end you then have to do a full 360 spin in the opposite direction and perform a wide swing while spinning, the 2nd slash i like with scythes is a little more complicated but it can be performed vertically or horizontally you hold the scythe extended with the dominant arm with the blade of the scythe facing backwards and swing it in a wide arc either horizontally in front of you or vertically upwards you then grab the scythe with your offhand and either bring it around to the side you just slashed from for a followup strike with the front edge of the scythe or you just strike from the side your 1st slash ended on

    Only problem I had with this video is the sword wielder played it real while the one with the scythe didn't. Got tapped on the hands twice. Show us what you can do after your hand has been disabled in combat. It's unlikely after being cut on the hand in nearly any situation that you would maintain a proper grip on that weapon. It's bigger and heavier. It would make sense that the pain from having a hand cut or stabbed would prevent accuracy when wielding a larger weapon.
