I enjoyed this, especially the analysis! Also kicking myself going OF COURSE one would use a minor second for OMINOUS THINGS, cf. the theme from Jaws. XD (I am wondering if the action/CAVALRY ARRIVES perfect fifth thing derives from the "easy" pitch limitations of e.g. natural bugles/trumpets/horns in Western music, or if the trope comes from elsewhere?)
Thanks so much!! That means a ton, these videos don't usually get a ton of views, haha. The 5th is 100% rooted in that military bugle/trumpet/horn tradition. Like you said, those limitations made it perfect for 5ths and octaves (haaaa) and once these horns were being included in ensembles, the manner of composition very much retained those military themes. Even after the advent of valves and chromatic horn technology, there was already an established tradition for using 4ths, 5th, and octave harmonies when grouped together, let alone the linear and melodic tropes. This was such an awesome comment. Thank you so much!!
but you forgot about the minor 2nd that began the original motif and should have ended (for a true inversion) your re-write. Would have sounded cool too and led to a whole other place.
