- Yep, for some reason that is purely functional and not at all practical, the NES controllers for the Nintendo Switch actually work when they're attached, and it's simultaneously the least and most wonderful thing ever.

Since so many people are asking how I got the game before its release, we're a media group recognised by Nintendo so we receive games early. It's standard in the industry and has been this way for decades. There's no secret method that'll allow you to do the same, Nintendo gives us specific download codes designed to function pre-release.

I had the same thought. I imagine it would work, as the NES controllers have the same rails as the joy-con. It would certainly make pressing L and R much easier.

I feel like Nintendo should drop the "U" in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. First, it's a bit confusing why the U is there now and second, it makes the title of the game weird and bad imo.
The trouble with that is that there is also a game simply titled "New Super Mario Bros", so the title you suggested would imply that it's a port of that game. I think their solution of just leaving the "U" is the most straightforward thing they could do.

You know, I'm sorta reminded of the old Namco and such two player arcade tables. I'd be somewhat interested in a game made to be played portrait style with two players
Look up Spiritsphere dx that might be what you're looking for.
9:51 If you pause the game, you can configure it so that it's B and Y to sprint, and X and A to jump. This is actually very practical when playing with a single sideways NES controller, as it then fully functions. You can even use the R button for spin jumping, and whatever it is to enter a bubble. Pretty cool!

@@Now_Its_Orange you can play a few games with them... but they have to be games that allow D-pad movement and have very simple button controls. Not required, but it helps if you can map controls in game. But the D-pad thing is most important -- if you need to use the joystick for movement, you're screwed.
Yeah, but sometimes you need to dash sideways, and that'll be very awkward and hard
The real question is, Does it go on the joy on grip?

I really like that when they say a controller isn't supported, they don't block it like they would have in the past so you can still try and play games with them, even if you don't have all the buttons/features required!

I wasn’t born in the days of NES and and the super NES I was more of the ps2 and wii and Ds lites but after having gotten into gaming more and now having a good job and time on my hands I’ve purchased myself a switch and I recently bought these nes controllers so I can finally get a feel for what those days must have been like I love video games and I can’t wait to explore more of them.
I can imagine this being useful if you want to play in tabletop mode without it actually being on a flat surface.
Kinda like those old LCD Happy Meal toys where you have to hold it on both ends.
That's really cool because that means Nintendo figured out how to use the buttons of the joy cons using placement and not a board (maybe)
I honestly don't get why every single article/video says they are overpriced. Yes they are a niche controller and probably not worth to buy in general but where else can you get 2 wireless controllers for $60? Most of the time a single Wireless controller costs that much. Yes a single one will likely be the better controller but 2 controllers for the price of one is far from overpriced.
I think Nintendo should sell single NES controllers for $30 since not everyone is gonna be playing 2 player and needing 2 separate controllers. That would also make the price more competitive since even though in reality, it's the same price per controller, just seeing $60 makes people make more unfair comparisons like above. Basically a marketing trick, same value but just makes it seem way cheaper in context.
I got my wireless controller for 16$. It has motion controls and rumble.

I've had two 8bitdo pads for over a year, only just got a switch, and bit annoyed that the switch doesn't have built in Bluetooth so I need to buy an adapter, but the SNES gamepad with analogue sticks and 4 shoulder buttons they make is so good, will be perfect for my switch

I dont mind the price tag, I hate the additional "tax" requiring a Online sub to buy them.
@@mr.vidjagamez9896 Well considering you need NES online to use them correctly (yes it technically works in other things but it's a terrible experience), that makes perfect sense to require a sub to buy it. 99.9% of people wouldn't buy these controllers without having online even if it was an option.
ninja gaidan I really wanted that NES controller. I loved that game use to be able to play it threw in one life but loved it and totally missed that nes controller, analog doesn't work nearly as good.
ty tecmo and nintendo for adding that game its first game on the sub service I played completely threw.
A snes controller with fewer face buttons is called a Gameboy Advanced and some games were updated to work with the fewer buttons making them better like Metroid having one button to aim rather than two and mario using down plus jump to spin

Do not complain about the price
I ended up ordering the Famicom controllers with the help of a friend in Japan and got mine recently.
They’re the same as the NES ones overall with some differences. The NES/Famicom games get a dark red Famicom theme instead of the grey NES one when connected.
Also the second controller has a microphone that works all the time in either version of the NES/Famicom games, but functionality so far appears to only work in the Famicom version of Zelda.
Also the second controller doesn’t have a select and start button and is forced to be second player in NES/Famicom games (other games are fine though).

Maybe it was a mistranslation to the word support, something like "this controller won't support any other than the NES games in a way that Nintendo will not map the buttons properly."
ive been using an NES controller on my switch since i got the classic console. the MagicNS adapter is really useful.

What would be a hype nintendo direct announcement would be super nintendo games being out now! Of course they would follow it up with you can purchase super nintendo controllers with an active online membership, which would be less niche since it has ABXY on the controller to be used in basically every 2D platformer on the switch and not just the snes and nes games.

It works really well with NSMB U Deluxe
This was like the first thing I tried with them. I think it feels pretty good, tbh.
You can play as Blue “Becken Berry” Toad by pressing ZL, L, or SL (while holding a singular joycon), on the joycon while hovering over toad. BUP!

They could have put the classic A B X Y format on the left controller and then had the classic nes controller layout for the right one.
It's almost like that one famicom climbing game!
Of course New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe works with them, Compare the controller to the Wii mote: Dpad? Check! Start+Select? Check! A+B+1+2? Kinda? 1 and 2 are using A and B, so I’d assume A and B are SL and SR.

If you are really into the NES games, these are nice. Will keep playing with my Pokken pad though, which has everything except sticks. Better ergonomics and actually usable in more games, like SW Dig, Celeste, Sine Mora, etc...

Not sure why this is surprising, I know many people, myself included, wanted these controllers not so much for the NES games, but for all the 2D/retro Indie games that are out on the system. I would gladly pay the retail price for a set, but I am not paying for the damn online sub just to be given the "right" to buy em.

I just used my original nest controllers that I converted to Bluetooth with the 8bitdo DIY kit
I just hope some developers make their splitscreen multiplayer rotated (as an option), so 2 people can hold the console (vertical) face to face, that would be actually better because you would only need to split the scale in half rather than doing that weird think Sonic Mania does for example stretching both views.

What’s the difference between the special version nes games and the regular versions?
the "special" versions are just save files that are mostly beaten already. it takes most of the challenge away for players who find the games way too difficult.
but since a patch came out for sonic mania you have to press X to go super but obviously you can’t do that with the nes controller
The any direction home button is the worst thing about this you should be able to toggle it to be all the buttons
Tell me that the NES controlers at least work with MK8 Deluxe, I mean, you have every button you need

My guess is it would of actually have been more work to tell the controllers to not connect when they could just reuse joycon parts and leave them as is.

The controller is specifically for playing NES games and specifically for people who want to use an NES controller to play NES games. It's amazing that you will complain so much that people have that option.

Honestly the price doesn't bother me too much. $30 for a wireless NES controller is about the same price for 3rd party options on amazon for the same quality. Plus together it's $20 less than a pair of joycons. It's just that they force you to get two.
