- Mark's Ford Next Gen Ranger is the first in Australia to get the all new Tailgate Storage Unit from @huracanfabrication
In this video Mark and Rohan from @T.A.G take you through all the steps to install this cool mod to keep all your recovery gear tucked away, ready for your next adventure.
Check out the storage solution at huracanfabrica...
There are also storage units available for other vehicles.
Mark purchased the additional tailgate gas strut from www.grunt4x4.c...

Hi All. Further details of the tailgate unit in action on the below video (skip to 9min 11seconds) th-cam.com/video/TrU39MMgvY8/w-d-xo.html
Suggestion, tape down the sheet before tearing out the centre bit, helps keep it square.
The side spot welds are easily removed by cutting the rib 150mm from the ends, taking out the main part and wiggling the last 150mm piece.
Spray paint everywhere to make sure you coat everything, even the swarf you might have missed.
Great video production.
Thanks mate. Good feedback on the spot welds. Removing the centre sheet was the trickiest part of the install.
Hi guys. Thanks for watching. If you’d like to check out some completed photos of the storage unit with my recovery gear inside, check out our Facebook page. Will also do a review of it in use on an upcoming trip 👍 Cheers Mark
Great video gents, absolutely stellar install. Well done!
Thanks! Always fun doing content with Rohan - stay tuned as we have a few things coming up ☺️
What a surprise i follow both of you guys and didn't know you were mates good stuff lol
Perth is a small world!
Likewise!
awesome install, more storage is always needed
Certainly handy to have the gear I need easily accessible 👍
That's why I have multiple different colours of permanent markers and paint pens. Milwaukee paint pens have so far been the best I've tried
Sounds handy to have 👍
Very good “How to” vid…. Well done
Thanks Ray 👌
Hey just wondering what those mats are in the tray? Thanks and good tutorial for those wanting one of these so thank you for taking the time to film!
Thanks mate. Bunnings and 3 of their 91cm x 91cm rubber mats ($75 for 3 when I purchased) They clip together and just trip as you need 👍 Alternatively search EBay for some mats designed for the Ranger tray but will be more expensive
Bit of a process but time and patience is the go.
With panel bond, heating will soften the bond making easy to remove.
Would it be easier to remove tailgate so you have easy access to each side.
Another minor tip, set your drill bit as high in the chuck as possiable and put masking tape on paint to help grip and reduce chance of hitting rear panel.
Drill the holes then remove the draw and clean the shavings out then perm fit.
Fitting gas struts will make the drop tailgate easy when it’s full also there are kits available.
Corrosion Sealing agent painted in the bottom of the inner tailgate would be ideal as I saw corrosion starting on the supports.
What corrosion paint did you use on the edges?
Cheers for feedback 👍 Just an epoxy paint. Don’t believe there’s any rust - more likely some dust build up from previous trips.
28 minutes and you didn’t show the completion or final product, would have liked to have seen it done and for you to show how much space you actually get to see if it’s worth it.
Hi James. Cheers for feedback - will keep that in mind for the next one. I put up a post on TH-cam and on my Facebook page which includes some finished images if you want to have a look. Will also do a review whilst using on an upcoming trip
This is one job I’ll give a miss. My mother used to say that there’s more to life than stuffing mushrooms.
Fair enough mate. Don’t mind a good stuffed mushroom 😋
How long overall did it take to install? How long would it take me as your average semi capable DIY person?
Give yourself a day, but you could easily do it in an afternoon. The cutting is the bit you want to slow down for - lay out the template, go slow and take your time. The other main bit is the release rods and make sure the wiring is out the way and not getting pressed down but the storage unit. Other than that it’s pretty straight forward. The unit just drops straight in once you’ve done the above.
I'd be interested to know how the tailgate static maximum weight is affected. I believe the standard Ranger tailgate is 450 pounds, but having removed some of the bracing I'm sure the amount would fall. I carry M/C's with the rear wheel on the tailgate. It now might collapse the storage unit lid? Any revised max. tailgate weight with the instructions?
Hi Christopher. I’d suggest dropping Hurracan Fabrication a message. They are normally pretty quick in responding.
Yessssss Rohan, both of you PS dogs tho 😢🙈
Moved over to the dark side 😉
@@Perth4WDandCamping I was so close to selling my PS about October last year haha, the new ranger is deffo what I'd get too
Loved my PS but the Ranger is a lovely ride
Nice it would be better if you could somehow put the tub liner back on the top so it makes a more hidden compartment
Thanks Daniel. I’m sure there’s a way you could retrofit the tub liner onto the lid if you wanted to conceal
More storage for snacks waiting for tow truck 😂
Yeah hahaha I hope they have one for rams and chevys to ... So they can have snacks while waiting for a Toyota to pull them
You supplying the snacks? 😋
Who's that stud?
Was a fun install!!
Haha. Took a bit longer than we anticipated but worth it. Loving this little mod. Thanks for all your help!
Great install video but like the others have said, some finished up shots showing the overall fitment plus functionality would be good. Should be easy to cover in a follow up video or even a TH-cam short I guess. Does it handle a person sitting or standing on the tailgate now that the storage is installed? Tailgates are usually a seat or workbench whenever I’ve been out in a ute or 4wd. Also, does it handle pushing/dragging stuff over the lid into and out of the tray?
Thanks mate for feedback. Yes will cover off in upcoming vid and if you’re interested have included a bit more info on Facebook. I’ve used it to stand and sit on without any issues. Also good re dragging stuff over it. It will scratch however, therefore I might stick some marine carpet onto it in the future
Weird…I’m in America, I have a black Ranger, and the same trimmer hanging on the same side in my garage.
Haha what are the chances!
Those sparks you talk of stick to everything and rust not just glass that’s paintwork plastic tub liner lamp lenses. Bad to have have to bend supports frame as the panel outer will no doubt have witness marks if you looked across it when you have finish
Thanks David. We gave it a thorough wash after so all good. Good tip to throw a sheet over the car if doing it yourself at home. My car also has a full PPF protection so none of the panels were exposed 👍
Got one installed on my first gen raptor...honestly, never again.
G’day. Interested to know why it wasn’t for you?
@@Perth4WDandCamping OK, where do I start. I think it's a good system if you just want to tour around Australia and not do any hardcore 4WDing. All the screws constantly came loose and all the carpets peeled off in the interior. Dust was a big issue when there are multiple gaps due to corrugation (peninsula development Rd) on the road and the screws coming loose. Dust entered the tailgate locking mechanism jamming it which prevented me from opening it and I couldn’t get it open to access my recovery gear which I store in there. I had to get a hose (at Bramwell station) lift the tailgate handle and squirt as much water in there to loosen everything off. Water crossings were a problem too. After crossing the Nolan Brook, I had to get out all my recovery gear and dry them out. It really needs to be dust and water tight. I don't store anything in the back of it now and it's just constantly locked because I don't use it. After watching your video it appears that it's an upgrade to what I've got and it could possibly stop dust and water from getting in there but I'm not willing to take the risk again with my next Gen Raptor. Well, that's my experience. Cheers
Thanks for the feedback and sorry to hear about your experience. Appears there have been enhancements on the new unit from your response. It’s now held into place with pop rivets rather than self tapping screws so don’t expect it to come loose. The interior seems very robust and mine has been in the rain and on dusty roads since installing and the seals seem good.
The standard tailgate was not sealed either (we could see this when we opened it up during the install) so I can’t see how it would be much different with the unit in compared to the standard tailgate.
Sounds like you had a very unfortunate experience. Might be worth passing this onto the Huracan Fab team directly if you haven’t already.
Ive been very impressed with the quality of all the parts when we installed.
If you have to drill and grinder a new truck then it’s not worth doing
A local fabricator would be able to install easily for those not wanting to do themselves. Reality is many aftermarket mods require some cutting etc.
@@Perth4WDandCamping true my man it’s just the truck isn’t been in a month of use and drilling and spray paint to avoid rust isn’t a good idea
It’s not for everyone mate. You can tell I see the value for my situation as since I purchased the car in Sep 22, finding a practical solution to access and store my recovery gear has been a challenge. This really has solved that issue for me.
@@Perth4WDandCamping true , I like the video it’s good
That looks like a lot of work for a glove compartment:(
Not too bad if you take your time, but I suspect many people will just pay for a professional to install.
Yeah nah I understand the idea but definitely not for me
Mods aren’t for everyone. Personally I love the practicality having all my recovery gear so accessible on trips
Absolute wast of time and money for no extra space . If you get a single leek highly likely and it stuffs up any wiring there goes your warranty
Fits my recovery gear so happy with that. Great use of otherwise wasted space. Seals up well. Just been on a trip on dusty roads and rain. All clean inside the unit 👍
28 minutes of my life wasted to not see the final product. 🤦♂️
Post a link on TH-cam not Facebook. The video was good till you failed to show what it looks like. 😂
Hey there. This was the how to install video. The following one shows it in action. Here’s a link ☺️ th-cam.com/video/TrU39MMgvY8/w-d-xo.html
Cheers watched it. If only you added it to this video. lol. So controversial not showing results eh?😂
My angry thumbs down is getting changed to a thumbs up now. Appreciate the work you put in to make the video. 👍
Thanks mate. Always trying to improve videos so feedback is good!
So much work for so little gain, sorry not for me
All perspective isn’t it. I’ve been bogged enough times to see the value in having easy access to my recovery gear so for me there’s much gained here, but understand it’s not for everyone
Is it waterproof?
The top seal is good. I’m yet to find any water in the box - however I wouldn’t be going underwater with it 😀
@@Perth4WDandCamping so no go for river crossing
@@jackmarsh7328 I mean the standard tailgate is not watertight either. Most people would just put in recovery gear in the storage box which wouldn’t matter if gets wet in the unlikely event you get water in during a river crossing
