My first meal in Bengaluru when I moved here 25 years ago was at Ebony, a restaurant perched on the 13th floor of one of the city’s earliest highrises. Dining under the stars, I distinctly remember the food, a smattering of Parsi, Pan Indian and Continental, dished up, simply minus any pretence yet solid in its flavours, much like the character of the city I now call home. I learnt later that the restaurant came into being quite by accident, born out of a crisis after its owner, Rajesh Rajaram, having bought the property as an investment was unable to flip it owing to the adverse fall out of the first Gulf war. Over the years, Ebony has successfully weathered many crises, evolving multiple avatars, the city’s most ‘democratic’ bar and more recently, an Asian restaurant. But sadly, the economic brunt of the current situation seems to have gotten the better of this Bengaluru bellwether. I visit Ebony for their last lunch service as they close shop to emerge stronger in a couple of months. Take care and stay safe. Happy eating!

    Nonya Crunchy Butter Prawns
Despite being crumbed in a flavoursome buttery crunch that resonates the toasty herbaceousness of crispened curry leaves and the tingling heat of red chillies, the faint sweetness of the prawns shines through.
    Rs. 495 (usd 6.6)
    8.5/10
    Thai Crispy Vegetables
Vegetables served up in a crispy batter with a honey-chilli combination, this was a vegetarian favourite at 13th Floor. The peppery notes of basil accents this appetiser.
    Rs. 355 (usd 4.7)
    8/10
    Salonee Broccoli
Moistened in a saffron-mustard marinade, the grilled broccoli florets unburden the punchy mustard flavours on the palate. The processed cheese rounds off flavours of this tasty appetiser.
    Rs. 320 (usd 4.3)
    8/10
    Arcot Mutton Chops
A ghee laden lamb chop that is slow-cooked to juicy doneness, and then charred on a grill to form a delicious masala crust. A traditional Mudaliar dish, the ghee in this heroes the juicy bite of the meat. A must-have when at Ebony.
    Rs. 545 (usd 7.3)
    10/10
    Kakori Kebab
Tender, rich in fat, lamb mince that is massaged with gentle spices and grilled on a skewer, these fragile kebabs leave a warming smokey, decadent impression as they melt away when placed in the mouth.
    Rs. 525 (usd 6.7)
    9/10
    Ebony’s Ultimate Butter Chicken
Rich in the tart sweetness of the tomatoes that cradles the tandoori spiced, grilled chicken, this is a dish that is supposedly a popular order here. I would have enjoyed a bit more kasoori methi punch in this makhan-laden dish. Having said that, it’s a dish that is comforting with a hot roti.
    Rs. 495 (usd 6.7)
    8/10
    Hyderabadi Deewan E Handi
Vegetables cooked in a rich cashew and onion gravy, the softened shallots add a punch of demure sweetness.
    Rs. 385 (usd 6.7)
    8/10
    Malaidar Dal Makhni
Loved the smokey, buttery flavours of the dal makhni that has been cooked slowly allowing for the flavours to develop. This is a dal that I would happily return for.
    Rs. 325 (usd 6.7)
