Well I arrived to late on this upload. You my friend have the gift of stripping things down to the facts, and then explaining them in a really great charismatic way, I stay with your videos to learn finger picking, as my confidence feels boosted already. First class easy to follow theory and examples. I wish I had neighbours like you. Top notch.
+Kelvin Wilson He has given a mind blowing lession on guitar. just wow... I had known from my friend about guitar lessions and found this interesting. You may google search for Renkarter Instant Guitar Report for learning more.
I have been playing guitar for a year and have been wanting to learn fingerstyle since I started but didn't know where to begin. I've browsed through about 20 videos before I came across yours and this was the first one that really helped me. The other videos were so confusing when I just needed some basics to start with. I can watch your video, pause it, practice and come back to it. I feel like when I master this lesson I can move on. Well, anyways, at least it feels like something I can accomplish so thank you!
It's been 5 years since I saw this tutorial, back then I was just starting to learn guitar. This lesson is one of my fundamental and with practice , dedication and passion, I can say that I've improved a lot since then. I give my gratitude to this channel.
I don't usually put comments on anything I see on youtube : however, when someone deserves credit. I have to give him credit. This is the first lesson i WATCH from you and I have to tell you that you are an amazing teacher and your lesson are very great and easy to learn. You "don't care" about how much you know, but you do care about how much people can learn from you. Because I have extremely talented guitar players over the internet but very poor teaching. YOU ARE AWESOME. SHOUT OUT FROM SEATTLE
thank you for your lesson and of course congratulations for your attitude to spread the knowledge Free of charge, I am sure some of us who can't afford to pay for a lesson will be grateful to you,
Thank you for sharing this information. Once you get get your head around never using the same finger twice, things start to fall into place. I feel like I`m on my way now!
Thank You for being so kind as to share your knowledge, you are certainly gifted as a musician as well as a teacher. Your generousity is greatly appreciated.
MontiR Aruba hey ,if anyone else is searching for where can i learn to play guitar online try Alkarno Amazing Guitar Alchemist (just google it ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my cousin got great success with it.
It always such a blessing to know that there are people who don't have any interest in gain, but do it joyfully, just to be of a blessing to others. Thank you. God bless you.
This is honestly one of the best tutorials for guitar on the internet. Lately I've gone through hundreds of them, not only to brush up and improve my chops, but to see how other teachers describe the basics as I'd like to begin teaching too. Great approach and simple verbiage. Years ago I found this guy and went straight to his lesson on a complicated fingerstyle piece. Those are all great, but if you are a beginner, take this step very seriously, and do as he shows.
The best beginner's tutorial for finger style picking! The tab is handy, and its as if you are teaching live right in front of me. I can watch this over and over till I get it right. Thnx!!!
A little late on the reply, but the above app suggestion is a good start. Tuning by ear generally takes a lot of practice without at least a reference tone. A quick tip on that - when it's "close" you can hear a sort of "wobble" between the two tones. The closer together the notes are, the "longer" the "wobbles" are within the combined sound. Using this strategy, you can effectively tune a guitar to itself, even if it's not technically in tune to the rest of the music world. (Useful if you don't have a proper tuning method on hand and are playing solo.) To do this, you hold the 5th fret on a string - preferably starting at the lowest pitch (top/6th) string - and play that string and the 5th string, adjusting the tuning on the 5th string until the "wobble" gets longer and eventually disappears. Continue this pattern down the strings until you reach the third string (from the bottom) - at this point you use the 4th fret, and return to the 5th fret for the next string. I hope this was clear and at least helpful on some level!
For reference, Exercises - 3:46, 4:30, 5:30, 6:03, 6:40, 6:55, 7:09, 8:30 (inner picking) Thank you so much for these beginner friendly exercises. im a beginner and want to expand my guitar knowledge, but ive often felt intimidated by fingerstyle. these exercises are definitely doable, so im confident i'd be able to play fingerstyle songs in no time!
LickNRiff thank you I've been playing with a pick for year and never gave myself a chance or the time to learn finger style and quit fast each time. I didnt it was ohh so damn easy to practice and learn this style. Here I am playing and my dogs looking at me probably thinking ''what the hell is that bro? you don't play metal with your fingers... did you loose all your picks again?'' Subscribed!
This is actually helping me to begin understanding finger picking my guitars! Thanks! I have two acoustic and one electric guitar. I've had two instructors and just have very little time to practice but I've just picked my guitars back up after a year of not touching them. Great video dude! Thanks again 😊,
As a total beginner I really love the excercises! I can feel a huge difference in my finger control and sensitivity after spending a mere half an hour on these. I'll be sure to practice this for a couple of minutes every day.
You made it look so simple and logical. I was looking for such lesson for a long time, specially where you explained the practice routine. Every video I watched so far on finger picking explained, what they call 1 or 2 or 3 magical styles (all crap). Can't really thank you enough.
This was awesome! I picked up the guitar I bought second hand after it had sat in the corner for two weeks. Its now 9:20 pm and my child is complaining that he's hungry! - he's having trouble tearing me away from this! After the first day, it sounds like music. I'll be back tomorrow. Inspiring & accessible.Thanks.
Bro!! I'm looking to start finger picking the guitar instead of using the guitar pick and I really enjoyed this video. Especially since you are the only guy to give me that pinky rest tip. That solved a bunch of problems for me. My only question is do you grow your nails out? You make it seem so easy. I want to fingerpick but having long nails will get in the way of work and working out at the gym. Is it possible to fingerpick well without nails? Should I bother investing in fingerpicks?
Yes, it is possible. I have a bad habit of picking off my finger nails and still manage to play finger-style using the ends of my fingers. It's going to hurt starting out -- especially with that high e string -- but playing will become more comfortable as you progress.
The E strings probably sound different from the way you play the ADGB strings because of how you're strumming them: since you aren't impeded by a string below the e string, or a string above the E string, you probably tend to angle your fingers deeper beneath the strings and apply more force onto them coming up, and you slide your fingers off at a different point than you would the other 4 strings because you aren't adjusting your finger so that you don't interrupt the strings above and below it. If that made sense. Anyways, just keep playing and playing. Most everything that seems wrong starting out will fix itself naturally as you become more attuned with how the guitar works.
Adeeb Hamad I agree with everything Ryan said about the e string, but I also want to add that you might be strumming that string harder or gentler than the others. you're probably using your ring finger for that string, and the ring finger is usually the weakest finger, as it usually gets used much less frequently. With practice and use, the muscles will build up better if that's the case.
regarding the finger nails question, you have plenty of options. You can use your fingertips, or your finger nails, or you can apply acrylic nail tips (an acrylic product is applied to your nails to make them thicker and stronger, but you can also add length with acrylic). You could make or buy a set of finger picks, which are small picks with a plastic ring that you slip your finger into, so it holds itself in place. I'm new at fingerstyle, so I'm by no means an expert. my nails are short and weak, so I've been looking into the options, lol.
I don't even know your name, but you have an easy, comfortable, accessible approach in these videos. Very nice. You've re-energized me to practice more. Much more! thanks.
Thank you sir-wish I knew your name -as you say it so fast-so far you've taught me 4 great songs. this is a wonderful exercise here for the fingers to warm up and get them to move more gracefully. as I want to get them to play more precise. I also recommend Guiliani's studies. To you sir, you are kind, generous person and humble-other guitarist just show off their skills-you are a great player of many styles and genres and love to teach, you are a true blessing. many God bless and I thank you.
Dominic Whiteley , That's beacause you have still not developed much of finger independence. Because of this, many guitarists reccomend not taking support of the pinky finger and instead forming habit by leaving it in the air. Hope this helps a bit : )
In classical guitar (fingerstyle guitar for serious musicians) it is taught to NEVER touch the top of the guitar and if you do, break the habit. The hand should not move even if it is not touching anything.
Please use names of each string note. Meaning not 1,2,3. finger. Say d - string b- string e -string ETC. Barbara PS. Their are a lot People who can read Guitar Music. Thank You.
Yes , I understand that even Famous Rock Stars can not read Music like My favorite Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac . He will come right out & tell you he can not read Music. When learning as a Child to count & the Teacher will tell you to go ahead and use your Fingers (Which will stick with you forever) There are alot of people who still do it today. So he can use BOTH name of the string AND the number this way everyone will learn to play and read music. My Son who is not a kid anymore was so impressed when I played Dust in the Wind for him. From the music book. I hope everyone who reads this takes it as nice help not being insulting. Thank You. God Bless Our Freedom of Speech. Barbara Ankner Meyrowitz
When i tried it on my guitar its sounds great in the beginning but when i put C Chord on it horrible sound! my grandmother is yelling at me cause the horrible noise!😲😲
It's also hard to perform for anyone just starting out with guitar since you probably have never used your ring finger individually before. It's the same concept as rubbing your belly and patting your head -- your brain normally processes your hands to work together instead of individually, but if you practice it more you'll get it down.
Aymen Tsurugi I'm certain you'll have it by now. Took me about a week of just doing it constantly. Just do it when your sat about watching tv or whatever and your brain eventually goes into auto pilot.
That's what I found at first too until I found a comfortable spot that worked for me. Play around with it. If I can do it , anyone can. I put my fingers on the strings first and then found the right spot to rest my pinky.
+Fviasvha Xinyi I just want to thank you Mr. LickNRiff for this. Although i been playing for awhile, sometimes i could use a different formula from other guitarist. You explained yourself very well for me and for anybody thats just learning the guitar.
+Fviasvha Xinyi He had a lot of useful stuff in this lesson, but that pinky thing is straight wrong. Don't do it, it will hold back your playing and lead to potential injury.
Thank you so much. I am really going to try this and keep practicing it. I have been subscribed a long time because I have watched a lot of your videos. I always liked watching your dogs lying down beside you. My dogs do the same. Thanks again for all your videos.
hi , i have a question ( i am learning from you ) ..why you upload these videos for free? i am just wondering why people are doing such a great work without asking any money?
prateek Bhardwaj Yeah, really nice vid, but i think this is for an intermediate player. If you are a newbie like me and want the ultimate beginner guitar course you should also check on google for grathaw guitar playing expert. I tell you i had almost no experience on guitar and it helped me a lot
I have marked you in favorites. It's 3:00 in the morning but as soon as I get up tomorrow I will give it all a try. I play everything from Hank to Beatles but never learned fingerpicking. My skin is so tender and fingerpicks hurt. Tomorrow I will use duck tape and try to learn what you did here. Thanks so much I have subscribed and will walk the walk with you. I really feel that at 68 I'm finally gonna get a handle on fingerpicking.Kerry Lyons - Knoxville, TN
For such a nice person offering to help beginners learn to fingerpick you should do a favor for yourself and buy yourself a better sounding guitar. I'm not being a smart ass. You deserve a better guitar is all I'm saying.
Yeah, he really loves this Takamine N-10 for some reason. He's said on Quora that he's played all kinds of guitars but this one is his favorite. The biggest problem with this one is he needs to take it to be setup or adjust the truss rod himself, I don't see how those buzzing strings don't bug the crap out of him.
Hi there,I'm so happy I found you and your wonderful lessons. You're helping me a great deal.A number of years ago I lost my right hand ring finger in a freak accident wearing a ring.Although I can't use my baby finger to rest in place on guitar as it is taking the place of the ring finger I am making some wonderful progress in a short amount of time. I love your approach to teaching and your candor. Thank you so much.Cheers,Dave
yeah, what a nice ad ... "I always wanted to play a guitar, so I downloaded Yousician" ... *Le me goes to the android store - your device isn't compatible* ... You fokin what? My phone can fokin play COD on hd, but it can't play a shitty app?
Man, I just brought home my new nylon string guitar and it was the first time I held it in my hand and could play this pyramid and it already sounds like music. Well done!
Thank you SO MUCH! I have wanted to learn to fingerpick FOREVER and your video is very easy to follow. Will share this on my facebook now :) God bless! You are very talented.
I cannot believe how good I play. I have tried with many good guitar players but never did I learn so quickly to do this. I enjoyed it also instead of getting frustrated I found myself waiting to learn more. Alright.!!! Thank you.!!!
thank you VERY much! i've been looking for a tutorial for fingerpicking and this has been a HUGE benefit. when i'm famous i'll send a ton of money to you.
God bless you and your family sir for sharing your talent and teaching those who can't afford formal music school! :)

MontiR Aruba hey ,if anyone else is searching for
where can i learn to play guitar online
try Alkarno Amazing Guitar Alchemist (just google it ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my cousin got great success with it.
Guitars have changed a lot in the past five years.
It always such a blessing to know that there are people who don't have any interest in gain, but do it joyfully, just to be of a blessing to others. Thank you. God bless you.
This is honestly one of the best tutorials for guitar on the internet. Great approach and simple verbiage. Years ago I found this guy and went straight to his lesson on a complicated fingerstyle piece. Those are all great, but if you are a beginner, take this step very seriously, and do as he shows.
"This should sound like crap" hahaha best part!
The best beginner's tutorial for finger style picking! The tab is handy, and its as if you are teaching live right in front of me. I can watch this over and over till I get it right. Thnx!!!
how i wish to master hand picking, but i need to learn first how to tune my guitar
Ella Dulawan there is tuning machines available
Ella Dulawan Check out the free guitar tuning app called `Guitar Tuna'.
I use that to tune my guitar and it works great!:)
I guess you have mastered guitar tuning by now :)

LickNRiff thank you I've been playing with a pick for year and never gave myself a chance or the time to learn finger style and quit fast each time. That Guitar has a beautiful tone and the teaching is excellent .
As a total beginner I really love the excercises! I can feel a huge difference in my finger control and sensitivity after spending a mere half an hour on these. I'll be sure to practice this for a couple of minutes every day.
you need to practice 40 hours a day bruv
Thanks mate. This really works. Two days and I can fingerpick at a reasonable level. Thank you again from Down Under.
You made it look so simple and logical. I was looking for such lesson for a long time, specially where you explained the practice routine. Every video I watched so far on finger picking explained, what they call 1 or 2 or 3 magical styles (all crap). Can't really thank you enough.
This is fucking incredible! Thank you so much, I learned the basics and was able to play within like 10 minutes! Thank you so much, subbing.
Just want to say thank you.. You're right this is the only lesson we will be needing to learn fingerstyle,..You're awesome!
"This should sound like crap." Haha, so true! Most warm-ups/exercises do not sound very good on guitar.

You sound like someone who knows what he is talking about, subbed.
You are a very good teacher Well Done mate. There are too many people trying to teach guitar to beginners that don't remember when they couldn't play.
Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks first person I have found who explains it well and slowed down into parts enough to digest it in my brain :).

When i tried it on my guitar its sounds great in the beginning but when i put C Chord on it horrible sound! my grandmother is yelling at me cause the horrible noise!😲😲
Love your phrase that moving picking patterns make their own music.
I can't seem to pick the E string with my ring finger when my pinky is resting on the body.
you don't have to rest your pinky on the body if you're not comfortable with it, play how you find easiest as long as you hit all the notes ;)

No worries my pinky can straighten so I can't put my pinky down
thanks big guy. just retired and always wanted to play the guitar your lessons sure do help.

Thank you so much. I am really going to try this and keep practicing it. I have been subscribed a long time because I have watched a lot of your videos. I always liked watching your dogs lying down beside you. My dogs do the same. Thanks again for all your videos.
hi , i have a question ( i am learning from you ) ..why you upload these videos for free? i am just wondering why people are doing such a great work without asking any money?
prateek Bhardwaj He gets paid for ads on the video.
Nothing is free in this world. They are getting money for this stuff. you just watch, learn, and enjoy
prateek Bhardwaj Yeah, really nice vid, but i think this is for an intermediate player. If you are a newbie like me and want the ultimate beginner guitar course you should also check on google for grathaw guitar playing expert. I tell you i had almost no experience on guitar and it helped me a lot
Varun Gaikwad 👍
+Daisy Blue & Boris SugarPuffs ohhh yyeeahh

it again. I’m really to see you again

He literally started with the first song i ever learned on guitar a few years back.... lol
+Titus Noland what song is it called?
+hortopiro Nothing else matters
Titus Noland Same! it surprised me
First Metallica song I've ever learned
Still watching it in 2018...this Vedio gonna remain valuable for all those finger style beginners throughout the life!!
For such a nice person offering to help beginners learn to fingerpick you should do a favor for yourself and buy yourself a better sounding guitar. I'm not being a smart ass. You deserve a better guitar is all I'm saying.
Ehhh, that's a matter of opinion. Plenty of famous artists play busted ass guitars on stage. It's not the instrument it's the person playing it.
+Matt Jensen ❤
Yeah, he really loves this Takamine N-10 for some reason. He's said on Quora that he's played all kinds of guitars but this one is his favorite. The biggest problem with this one is he needs to take it to be setup or adjust the truss rod himself, I don't see how those buzzing strings don't bug the crap out of him.
I didnt know he was in quora, thanks for let me know
I think he likes the sound of the buzzing strings.
Thanks man... really helped me
