  • This week we're doing our 2nd solo Beatle discography. This time it's the Quiet Beatle, George Harrison, who made a huge splash with his 1970 triple album, All Things Must Pass. However, much of the rest of his output tends to be overlooked by many. Is there anything else worthwhile? Time to find out...
    ****
George Harrison MBE (25 February 1943 - 29 November 2001) was an English musician, singer-songwriter, and music and film producer who achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the Beatles. Sometimes called "the quiet Beatle", Harrison embraced Indian culture and helped broaden the scope of popular music through his incorporation of Indian instrumentation and Hindu-aligned spirituality in the Beatles' work. Although the majority of the band's songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, most Beatles albums from 1965 onwards contained at least two Harrison compositions. His songs for the group include "Taxman", "Within You Without You", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something".
Harrison's earliest musical influences included George Formby and Django Reinhardt; Carl Perkins, Chet Atkins and Chuck Berry were subsequent influences. By 1965, he had begun to lead the Beatles into folk rock through his interest in Bob Dylan and the Byrds, and towards Indian classical music through his use of the sitar on "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)". Having initiated the band's embracing of Transcendental Meditation in 1967, he subsequently developed an association with the Hare Krishna movement. After the band's break-up in 1970, Harrison released the triple album All Things Must Pass, a critically acclaimed work that produced his most successful hit single, "My Sweet Lord", and introduced his signature sound as a solo artist, the slide guitar. He also organised the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh with Indian musician Ravi Shankar, a precursor to later benefit concerts such as Live Aid. In his role as a music and film producer, Harrison produced acts signed to the Beatles' Apple record label before founding Dark Horse Records in 1974 and co-founding HandMade Films in 1978.
Harrison released several best-selling singles and albums as a solo performer. In 1988, he co-founded the platinum-selling supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. A prolific recording artist, he was featured as a guest guitarist on tracks by Badfinger, Ronnie Wood and Billy Preston, and collaborated on songs and music with Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr and Tom Petty, among others. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 11 in their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". He is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee - as a member of the Beatles in 1988, and posthumously for his solo career in 2004.

I'm so glad that Kramzer brought up, That is All. That may be one of my favorite Beatle or solo songs of all time. Strikingly beautiful. His voice, the chords, and the arrangement are all perfect. Simply beautiful.

I am too biased to comment really. I personally would have every one of those albums at or above 4 stars, with most of them probably cracking the top 5-10 of their given release years, if not win the whole thing. It’s the soundtrack to my life and I can’t apologize. I’d be just as likely to listen through gone troppo as I would to listen through the first few albums. Just me I guess. Everybody’s got their something. This is it for me. Every single album.

I heard these albums when they came out and formed opinions that have lingered for a long time. You guys did a great job of providing some insights to consider and I’m listening to some of these again for the first time in a while and discovering things I either forgot about or never considered. Thanks. I do hold George Harrison in higher esteem. If they had stayed together, I think Blow Away and a few of these others would’ve been appropriate on a 1979-80 era Beatles album with John’s Double Fantasy songs and Paul’s best from McCartney II and Back to the Egg.

Second time watching this. Great and informative vid. I’m not much of a Beatles fan and Lennon solo I like a handful of songs, but aside from Macca, I have never listened to any album in its entirety due to just not being into them. I have only knowingly heard 3-4 George songs and I’ll keep it that way. There’s plenty of Macca solo and with Wings to keep me going. Still, i really enjoyed the vid.

I listened to Wonderwall Music and Electronic Sound in preparation for this week haha. I definitely see why you chose not to count them. I also got to hear All Things Must Pass which of course I knew was great but it was extra wonderful hearing it immediately after Electronic Sound!
Very interesting episode. I feel like a lot of George Harrison's solo albums outside of the few most famous ones don't get talked about much so I liked learning more about them and hearing what you all have to say.

I have George Harrisons' first album from my fraternity house's manager lmao! It was really good. I discovered I got my mindset on you after a holiday party. That's a pretty good pop cd. It reminded me of what Robert's plant and sting were producing at this time. Can't wait to hear your reviews.

Right on! At least five of the tracks off Material World are my most played songs in the last few years. It’s just such an intimate, beautiful album. It may not hit the highs like All Things Must Pass does, but it’s so consistent and just overall does more for me. Can’t explain it.

At one time George was my favorite Beatle, but he was never my favorite ex-Beatle. I stopped buying his records around 33 and 1/3, and pretty much gave up on him. I was happy he redeemed himself somewhat with the Traveling Wilburys, but overall I found his solo career a disappointment. Nice discussion.

Surprised no one talked about the recently released All Things Must Pass reissue with the totally remixed album. It was DeSpectorized to the extent it could be since the reverb was printed on the tracks. I found the remix to be disappointing, but it grew on me with repeated listening. All Things Must Pass is the top by a considerable margin. I want to like Living in the Material World more than I do. All of George's albums after ATMP have some stand out tracks and some unmemorable fluff. I know it doesn't quite fit this topic, but the first Travelling Wilburys album is a tour de force. I've been spinning it a lot lately and it just grows in stature over time. It has a reputation as a lightweight jam with middle aged rockers goofing off. There are some moments of profundity mixed with the more lighthearted fare and the individual personalities blend into a cohesive and unique entity. I miss George a lot. He is my second favorite solo Beatle after Paul. Talking about George's slide playing. Did he ever play slide on a Beatles record. I can't think of any. For you blue is John. Reportedly Paul objected to George playing slide on Free as a Bird because it was George's post Beatles style. Paul obviously lost that debate. Get Back debuts tomorrow. Woo hoo!

  • @deanjonasson6776
    @deanjonasson6776 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Loved the discussion and how all three of you were able to justify your picks and pans. Harrison's solo discography is varied but you did a credible job with it. I agree with Jason that the production on ALL THINGS MUST PASS is important, lending a majesty to these important songs. (I wish the re-issues would isolate the "Apple Jam" on a separate disk. It really mars the listening experience for me.) Like Kramzer, I appreciate DARK HORSE. Harrison purposely used that laryngitis-version (dark hoarse... get it?); there's a sweeter version out there (on a compilation, perhaps) that doesn't sound as good. I also agree with Joe about LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD: a good (not great) album lacking only a solid set of songs.
Note that Harrison developed his slide playing after the Beatles split up. He was a (hidden) guest musician on a Delaney & Bonnie tour and used that opportunity to experiment with the technique that would become one of his signature sounds.
It's worth checking out the CONCERT FOR BANGLDESH album, the first all-star charity show. It's filled with great artists, memorable performances, a positive vibe and, yes, excellent Harrison songs. At the other end of his career, the LIVE IN JAPAN album is also worth knowing as a career-retrospective featuring an all-star backing band. For best results, get the remastered version as it's cleaner sounding than the original release.
    Again, great job, guys!

Not so sure the use of "Dark Hoarse" was George's idea or intention. It was a common music media joke back in the day and was even lampooned in some comedy songs.

I preface this by saying I’m a huge George Harrison fan; I was even partially named after him. His music has been with me most of my life and I find his songwriting, singing and guitar playing to all be wonderful.
    10. Somewhere in England- I do find it to be too 80s, and the weakest batch of songs he ever had. The original album was rejected by Warner Brothers and some of the rejected tracks are better than what ended up on the album.
    9. Dark Horse - Yes, George had a sore throat (que the dark hoarse puns), and the Bye Bye Love cover is ghastly. But the rest is good. “So Sad/Simply Shady” is a great one-two punch.
    8. 33 1/3 - The super funky opener just seems out of place for George, and there are a few weaker tracks, but anything with “Its What You Value” and “Crackerbox Palace” is going to be good.
    7. Brainwashed - A beautiful farewell statement. Sadness reigns, but hope does as well as he faced the end with his spiritual outlook.
    6. Cloud Nine- I must confess I’ve never cared for the title track or “Got My Mind Set On You” but there is so much good material. There is a place in my soul that only the slide guitar on “Someplace Else” can reach.
    5. Gone Troppo- I’m in a miniscule minority, which might only be me, but I really like this album. I grant the title track is totally goofy, and some of the synth sounds are very cheesy, but the songwriting, especially on the second half, is superb. “Unknown Delight” “Mystical One” “Baby Don’t Run Away” and “Circles” are all top notch.
    4. Extra Texture - So many beautiful piano/keyboard ballads. “The Answers’ At the End” is transcendent.
    3. George Harrison - I agree the guitar tone on “Your Love is Forever” is amazing. “Here Comes the Moon” could be just a cheap sequel, but its beautiful written and recorded and a worthy little brother to its more famous sibling on Abbey Road. “Blow Away” is the standout track.
    2. Living in the Material World- The beautiful sadness in George’s voice is never better than here, “The Light That Has Lighted the World” and the one-two punch that conclude the album display it best.
    1. All Things Must Pass - Simply one of the greatest albums ever recorded- the best Beatles solo album (sorry Ram and Imagine)

The Two George Harrison albums I own I really like - Thirty Three & 1/3 & Living In The Material World. I traded in All Things Must Pass several times in several formats. Most of his records seem aimless , uninspired. Perhaps I expected more adventurous endeavors from him because of his status 🤔

Kramzer is my hero this week. I’ve long thought I’ve been the only person in this world who considered Living in the Material World to be their favorite over ATMP. LITMW has always been my favorite, even when first released, and ATMP has dropped as the decades have passed because it's so over-produced, bloated, and Phil Spectorized beyond reason. It hasn't aged well. . .but then, neither have I.

First off..let me say I love George Harrison...the beatles are my favourite band of all time.. I think John and Paul should have tossed him an extra track on the albums in their later years, maybe it would have helped them stay together...that being said. .outside of the initial outpouring on all things must pass...his albums were spotty...he was meant to be an important complimentary piece in the beatles...his material was was repectable...sometimes great...but in terms of solo...they needed each other...George's material..(I'm not even counting ringo)...was spottiest...too bad they didn't have a meeting and say...john and Paul have 4 songs...George has 3...and if Ringo has 1 we will put him on...if not he will sing one...and let some cowrites happen as well...but...Allen klein forced the issue with his 15 percent ...good one guys...cheers

I don’t remember any of you mentioning “Not Guilty” was a White Album reject that was given a much mellower treatment on the self titled, which I guess says it all about it being a bit too “comfortable” of an album. I do like that approach though for the most part.
Also good that you guys are doing several smaller discographies in a row, probably to allow more time to listen to 2021 albums for the end of the year.

I've purchased All Things Must Pass a few times on cd due to the frequent re-releases hoping to catch whatever it is, and each time i cant make it through. That Wah-Wah song on there has always made me question his self editing haha.

For sure. Extra Texture I think is pretty bad - very "woe is me" and don't like the playing or the production much. Where's his guitar? Love 33 and a Third. Kramz you don't hear the guitar? Love "Crackerbox Palace" and the slide parts on there are incredible. As a producer I think he was way underrated.

    04) Thirty Three & 1/3 (3.75 stars)
    03) George Harrison (3.75 stars)
    02) Living in the Material World (4 stars)
    01) All Things Must Pass (4 stars)
    0 stars - irredeemably terrible/the worst/insultingly bad
    .5 stars - terrible
    1 star - bad
1.5 stars - between bad and fair
    2 stars - fair
    2.5 stars - meh
    3 stars - OK/decent
    3.25 stars - pretty good
    3.5 stars - good
    4 stars - very good
    4.5 stars - excellent
    5 stars - the chupacabra
    notes:
    * I came close to making Living in the Material World number 1 but you just gotta give it to All Things Must Pass. It's a stunning display of pent up creativity unleashed. Not every song is a winner though and the jamming at the end while enjoyable is not particularly remarkable. "Isn't It a Pity" doesn't need to be here twice and the first version is too long, so that one should have been left off. "Let It Down" is an intriguing example of a "quiet/loud/quiet" song dynamic (who was the first to do that anyway?). Shockingly, "Art of Dying" sounds like proto disco, especially on the bass guitar. The song has a very 70s sound and Clapton cooks on it.
    * There's obviously a lot of religious sentiment in Harrison's writing. Even though I'm an agnostic atheist I can appreciate his longing for "God" in some of the songs and I feel his emotional pleading. On the other hand, I'm quite turned off by other religious elements, such as in "Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)" where he sings, "See the Lord and all the mouths he feeds" which I find quite deplorable considering all the people and animals in this world who starve every day. I have complicated, mixed feelings on this subject but I appreciate Harrison's sincerity and his heartfelt expression.
    * I dig a nice, raspy vocal on occasion, but in the case of "Dark Horse," an otherwise good song is marred by Harrison's laryngitis. His raspy voice does not sound good and he should have waited until after he recovered to sing.
    * Extra Texture has perhaps an overabundance of slow songs and ballads and detours into Soul with decent/mixed results. I think there's some good stuff on it though.
    * "Woman Don't You Cry for Me" gets funky. Elsewhere, he dabbles in rag time, country and 50s-style rock n roll.
    * Gone Troppo is a classic case of an artist making an album just to fulfill a recording contract. Only "That's the Way It Goes" and "I Really Love You" I consider good songs. "Dream Away" is not a good song but it's dangerously catchy enough to get stuck in your head. Beware!
    * On Cloud Nine, Eric Clapton plays on four different numbers and he cooks on each one, boosting them considerably. The only real dud is the sleep-inducing "Just for Today." Harrison took inspiration from an Alcoholics Anonymous pamphlet but he didn't quite get the AA message right.
    * Brainwashed is a highly consistent record. I rate nearly every song 3.5 stars - good but not great.
    * Harrison seemed like a sweet guy in many ways but he was rather drug addled at times and he cheated on his first wife which gave the lie to all his religious mumbo jumbo. But he seems to have become a better person later in life as many if not most of us do. How sad that he died at the relatively young age of 58 from cancer. RIP George.

Surprised at the hate for Dark Horse. "Ding Dong, Ding Dong" is a strong contender for best holiday themed rock song. It came super close (like 11 or 12) to making my 1975 SOTY list (it charted in January of that year). The video is also pretty awesome if you haven't seen it.
All in all, I'm pretty indifferent to most of George's solo work. I think All Things Must Pass is one of the best albums of the 1970s, but beyond that, none of his solo albums did anything for me beyond the odd track here or there. I think he kind of blew his wad on ATMP. He probably should've made it a single album and kept a few of those tasty Beatles rejects in his back pocket for future albums.
I think my second favorite post-Beatles effort by George is the first Traveling Wilburys album.

My George Harrison albums list includes 11 of his 12 albums.Thoughts as I listened included....
11 Electronic Sound (1969) 2/10 of its time for sure. Speaking as a lofi music producer who also does electronic soundscapes, I was not impressed, but I enjoy the breakthrough this probably represents in terms of early electronic music experimental soundscape in the studio... more than its relevance as any kind of musical composition to be loved by me.
10 Wonderwall Music (1968) 5.5/10 now I'm a Ravi Shankar and a Penguin Cafe Orchestra fan and this record represents some of George's first forays into Indian music and instrumental composition noodles. It's fine. An artist exploring intonation well just nothing I'd go back for but the middle tracks Dream Scene and Party Seacombe which have great sonics and quirks.
9 Dark Horse (1974) 6/10 I won't go back to it but it sounded fine.
8 Somewhere in England (1981) 6/10 all sounds fine but not very distinctive for me in many ways. I wouldnt listen again despite the middle three tracks starting with Teardrops being pretty good.
7 George Harrison (1979) 6.5/10 George doesn't disappoint. But this is not a very distinctive album first go.
6 Extra Texture (Read All About It) (1975) 6.5 All quite nice and it flows well. George tended to do his thing well in the 70s but he wasn't always a master at tightening up his compositions which could become smoothly nicely samey at times.
5 Brainwashed (2002) 7.5/10 glad I squeezed this lovely postumous album in today...only went back to it because everyone seems to like it and they are right. There's even a great anthem to my star sign⭐🐟 in there! Like 33+1/3 it's an album worth going back to and giving time to grow. Georges family did a great job finishing it off.... beautiful clear production.👍
4 Thirty Three & 1/3 (1976) 7.5/10 freshest sounding record beautifully produced. Strangely no really outstanding song but really enjoyed whole record.
3 Cloud Nine (1987) 8/10 I remember when this came out and Got My Mind Set On You was a very distinctive part of my 8 year old world. Good times. It's a very very good record overall.
2 Living in the Material World (1973) 8/10 George doing spiritualist music is really cool. A lovely journey worth repeat listening. Enjoyed this album alot.
1 All Things Must Pass (1970) 10/10🏆💘 yeah even with the Wah Wah song and some overlong jamming at the end with Out of the Blue it's so good back to front, heart and soul. 3/4 of it is one of the best albums ever. It's the aura of what's great on it that has blossomed and impacted culture over time and also the mix that makes it an all time classic.😎🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
    Conclusion
Like millions I've always enjoyed Georges style....I can hear his impact on the sound that the Travelling Wilburys went for in his later records which says alot of what Bob and co probably thought of the great man. Like John and Paul probably said at some point George was his own man and he had his own way and sound, and he made one absolute classic banger that should be in everyone's collection as a solo artist. But plenty to enjoy on most his albums. What comes through most is his sweet, lovely spirit on every album....nay on every song❤️‍🔥🎸

I have also listened to this entire catalog, which I can't say for much of what is covered here. (Hmm, Queen, McCartney, Lennon, Harrison, Aerosmith... not sure if there are any others). I put Harrison's at a solid second favorite behind McCartney's output. Lennon's is really good too, but solo John is a bit too angst filled for me to reach for often, despite my respect for it. (I haven't managed to push through Ringo's entire catalog, but I think I got to about 79, and some of it is good). But the one time I chronologically listened to the whole Harrison catalog, I found it exceedingly pleasant? In a complimentary sense: Easy on the ears, with good musicianship and many excellent songs, and many catchy good songs too.
I agree with Jason and Kramzer's overall vibe towards Harrison the most, but not the ordering. Since I did not relisten before watching this, I can only confirm a top 3:
    1. All Things Must Pass
    2. Cloud Nine
    3. Living in the Material World
Admittedly Cloud Nine is so high on my list for a nostalgic and personal reason: It came out when I was 9, and was a favorite of me and my mom's and we had it on vinyl and the Got My Mind Set On You video is some formative stuff for me. (So, my version of Kramzer's Dark Horse.) That said, I think there's a non personal take for Cloud Nine as the second best: It's the only pure pop album in his catalog and contains no weak tracks, so is a fully unique entity within the entire Beatles solo catalog (A peak 80s Jeff Lynne produced Beatles solo album).
My relationship with All Things Must Past is about 10 years shorter, but it is arguably the best Beatles Solo Album (but not the one I reach for the most, which is Ram). Nothing to add to the excellent takes Listography has on that album.
Living in the Material World is great, but I don't really connect with it emotionally as much. The guitars RULE on it tho. Its easily the one I've listened to the 3rd most. Finally, similarly to my Cloud Nine experience, my Dad had Gone Troppo on cassette tape, and... IDK I just like that one, even when recently revisited. No accounting for taste.
Finally, shout out to the Live in Japan, released in 1992, recorded 1991... All star affair, tons of good guitar playing from George and Eric Clapton, good versions of his Beatles songs... great live album!

My favorite eras were 1970 to 1975 and 1989-2001. In between, something to love on each one.
You forgive his laryngitis on Dark Horse. Loved "Ding Doing Ding Dong", a classic New Year's song. All the Beatles did some song of this type well. Anyone else, forget it. I loved the Indian stuff because I was interested in eastern religions since I was a kid. It clicked. My favorite Beatle since 1964. I ALMOST saw him live in 1974, but I was not home in Chicago. I was bummed.

All Things Must Pass (yo are right Joe) almost too good. Love the sound, songwriting, slide guitar, vocals, orchestration. Amazing album which I think completely overshadows his later work my only negative is the middle part with the studio outakes, remixes. Maybe that was a Spotify quirk but anyway it's bloody great! My no 2 would be the self titled.

There are gems on all the albums but at times the arrangements, instrumentation & production really let some of the albums down, at times George seams disinterested and lackluster... Always liked George he is my pick of the Beatles as a solo entity the other three are not far behind, only been listening to Ringo's albums recently, I alway's thought they would be pretty poor but to my surprise I like a descent percentage of the songs...
10- Gone Troppo 2-5 (it is the worst album but I do like some of the songs though none would make a best of)
    09- Dark Horse 2.5-5
    08- Somewhere in England 3-5
    07- Extra Texture 3.5-5
    06- Thirty three and A Third 3.5-5
    05- George Harrison 3.5-5
    04- Cloud Nine 4-5
    03- Brainwashed 4-5
02- Living in the Material World 4.5-5
01- All things Must Pass 5-5 (Maybe this should not be a 5-5 album because unlike many I generally do not like Spectors production, everything I have that heard with his production removed I prefer...

it's kind of like The Beatles wore off him.
When I was ten I won a contest through WBZ FM in Boston -by guessing what songs would be the next week's top 5, you would win the top 5 albums; If nobody guessed right, it would go up to 10 albums the next week etc. I won the top 15 ones..
And so, one day, into our quiet middle class neighborhood came the post man, who placed on the doorstep of our modest little house a parcel wrapped in brown paper; as if it were a bomb..
I was the only 4th grader in my neighborhood who had a copy of Aladin Sane, Houses of the Holy, and Living In The Material World.
David Bowie standing naked with a lightning bolt painted on his body, took his place alongside Donny Osmond and The Partridge Family, causing my mom no small degree of concern with his renditions of "Let's Spend The Night Together" and "Cracked Actor" but, oh, yeah, I digress...
Living In The Material World became probably my 8th favorite out of the 15 I won, while the Beatles Red and Blue compilations were tied for #1; but it was never good enough to make me ever get another Harrison album -his voice always seemed to warble too much; probably because of the heavy chorusing that engineers put on weaker singer's voices (most evident in recordings of Jerry Garcia in the studio) and he used too many diminished chords and exotic scales as if searching for something mystical and not quite finding it....
Then, in '82 I got a hold of Made In England on cassette; and to this day it's hard for me to think of a worse song than "Save The World" with its tubas and kazoos and...well...that warbly voice...The Beatles had worn off him like a record that's been played a thousand times...
You guys always peak my curiosity; so I AM going to check out some of your picks, like Dark Horse. I just fear that I'm in for some warbling, though....
Incidentally, Alladin Sane became my 5th favorite after the red and blue Beatles, Red Rose Speedway by McCartney and Houses of the Holy and my mom recovered from Bowie shock after some therapy...
pretty long ass comment...this is some good coffee LOL

Thanks guys for your work. I usually agree mostly with Joe, but here i have to say i wonder why he is so down on most of GH work. My advice: listen more. But i agree with Kramser about LITMW as #1, but only just. I also enjoyed the mention of “is that all?” I have been a fan since forever, (im 56) and consider maybe 50% of Gh work ahead of Maccas. Here is my list, if your interested, with comments:
    10. Somewhere in England- never been able to get into this one- quite un-interesting to me.
    9. Dark Horse- i like the title track and ding dong, but the rest i think is not so good
    8. Extra texture- i am not with you on this one; its quite a depressing listen, except -2-3 tracks- i love “you”
    7. 33/3- its quite good, with some good songs but too much keys for me
    6. Gone Troppo- contrary to most, i like this: non-preachy and fun- some good songs also-
    5. Brainwashed- good album, a little weak with the voice, but some great tracks like “rocking chair” and “stuck inside a cloud”
    4. George Harrison- great album, very listenable; easy on the ears. Love “your love is forever”
    3. Cloud nine- very good, great hooks, great production.
    2. ATMP- classic; in every way except the reverb; some songs ruined by it- love the new re-mix.
    1. LITMW. Very very good all the way through- even though im a Christian i love it. Lovely production and great writing.
I think the main criteria, besides the objective of goodness, is how much do i listen to this?

I'm hoping that Be Here Now is on somebody's Top 10 song list-that's the best of many stirring mid-tempo meditations on LITMW. All Things Must Pass has never really grabbed me. The best songs are high points in Harrison's career, but I always lose interest as the album progresses. I enjoy Cloud Nine but it's overproduced compared to my favorite Harrison albums. I've never listened to Extra Texture or Brainwashed but I'll give them a listen based on your ratings.

I think Joe has proved himself once again to be the "peoples' critic," especially with his top 2 choices. And I respect that he dared say the Quiet Beatle's discography is just not too exciting. I think Kramzer's positive view of the Dark Horse album is colored by childhood memories (happens to all of us) while Jason's picks are the most outlandish (which is typical for Jason ;-). George was schooled by 2 of the greatest ever; and maybe that is what is lacking with all the later albums. He surrounded himself with the same group of players again, and again. Maybe had he branched out, and had to sing for his supper, the albums would have meant more. I mean, there is some really lazy stuff on many of his albums, after those first 3. "Must Pass' is one of the great artistic outpourings of all time. I like "Extra Texture" quite a bit, with 'You', and "The Answer" (and the George diminished chord). And "Material World". Hate his comeback and "All those years ago". But when called upon, like with Ron Wood, and "Far east Man", he would step up. The one thing no one can deny, is that he was a superb Slide player.

My "George "deep dive this week. Admittedly I didn't know his solo work much( with the obvious exceptions) ..The results :
    1. All Things Must Pass
    Surprise , surprise ..
    5 stars
    2. Living in the Material World
The one after "Pass", but not quite as good .. but still pretty , bloody good. Title track , Give Me Love , The Light that has lighted the World amongst my faves
    4 stars
    3. Thirty Three & 1/3
The "new discovery "of his discography for me . Was aware of " Cracker Box Palace" but not much else on this album. Beautiful collection of mostly mellow , sweet pop songs( Beautiful Girl and Learning How to Love You are particularly gorgeous).. the most listens for me of the new ( to me ) Harrison stuff .
    4 stars
    4. George Harrison
Lukewarm reviews at the time as I read online ..but I don't get why... Not quite as strong as Thirty Three and 1/3 , but this is a solid collection of tunes ..Blow Away, Here Comes the Moon, are great but I really adore the opener Love Comes To Everyone , the way the hook subtly creeps up on you...a new one for my top 10 George solo tracks for sure ...
    3.5 ( heading to 4 stars)
    5. Brainwashed
Harrison's posthumous album , has Jeff Lynne's production/ stamp all over it and it mostly works . Not really a dud on the album but nothing that really stands out for me either as there might be on my higher ranked albums . Opener Any Road , Run So Far , Rocking Chair in Hawaii are ones I like..a fitting farewell and deservedly got some love from critics but not quite one of my absolute favourites...
    Might be a grower though.
    3.5 Stars
    6. Cloud Nine:
Again Jeff Lyne produces ,and the tunes are nicely streamlined , all catchy, solid 3 and a half to 4 minute pop tunes ...this got mostly love from critics and a US number 1 hit for George with Got My Mind Set on You ( a cover) ..but something about this album doesn't click for me...doesn't have the sweetness of ( some of ) the 70s George stuff. Sounded almost too produced( calculated?) for mainstream ( late) 80s radio ( which obviously was the intention ..in that sense the record succeeds ) ...but something is lost for me compared to some of his 70s work to have ranked in my top 5.
    3 stars
    7 .Extra Texture
Another album which polarized critics at the time . The album is definitely a mixed bag but the magnificent, soulful Motown sounding opener (and single) " You" might be one of my 10 favourite Harrison songs ..maybe. "This Guitar ( Can't Keep from crying ) " , " Grey Cloudy Lies " are also standouts . About on par with the erratic "Dark Horse " album
    2.5 stars
    8. Dark Horse
Quite like the sound , instrumentation on the record but only a handful of songs I like ( Simply Shady , Maya Love ) stand out. Patchy but like Extra Texture , I don't think as horrible as some critics made out
    2.5 stars
    9. Gone Troppo:
Apart from those first couple of experimental albums this is the first Harrison record I couldn't wait to finish . The song Greece sums up the album for me .. starts off nicely , good sounds, slide guitar etc ..then just ambles nowhere . Pretty dull mostly
    2 stars
    10. Somewhere in England
Much the same as Troppo. Quite like "All those Years Ago ". ..I recall critics and hardcore Beatles fans I knew at the time hating that song . I think it's pretty darn good and catchy as hell. But that's it for this record .
    1.5 stars
    11. Wonderwall Music
A ( sort of ) interesting listen . Probably won't revisit it again but who knows...
    1.5 stars
    12. Electronic Sound
Not an interesting listen . Definitely won't be revisiting . My head hurts ...

All Things Must Pass is still one of my all-time favorite albums of all time though and I was absolutely obsessed with that album when I was in high school. Most of the stuff past that is just too bland and laid back for me to really be interested in, he doesn't have the strong personality and charisma of John's solo work and he also doesn't write vocal melodies as strong as Paul. I will admit that most of George's music is pleasant to listen to so that keeps me from actively disliking his work as a solo performer

Have you ever heard the original version of "Got My Mind Set On You?" It's not that great. Why George Harrison plucked that one out of obscurity is beyond me. I think his version is infinitely better - regardless of how dated it sounds.
I've heard the "3 of the greatest songwriters ever were in one band" comments and...as much as I like the quirkiness of some of his work in 1967-1968...and the awesomeness of things like "It's All Too Much," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Here Comes The Sun" and the "All Things Must Pass" album...I don't know that he merits upper echelon, top tier status. I think that's largely due to the first two discs of "All Things Must Pass" being approximately immaculate, song-wise. I've tried on several occasions to get into his work after "ATMP" and it's a tough sell at times. I couldn't get much higher on my George-Love-o-Meter when the "Cloud Nine" album first came out when I was about 15...but I never did love the whole record.
