I will (for the most part) agree with your opinion of Gone Troppo with one exception. I think that “Mystical One” is one of the most beautiful and insightful songs George ever wrote. Incredibly moving.
That’s EXACTLY what I was going to write about Gone Troppo. “Mystical One.” Some of the other tunes aren’t so shabby either. The weird thing about the album for ME was that it was so light and bouncy so soon after John’s death.
Just finished listening to George’s albums so here’s my list: 1. All Things Must Pass 2. Brainwashed 3. George Harrison 4. Thirty Three & A Third 5. Living In The Material World 6. Cloud 9 7. Somewhere In England 8. Dark Horse 9. Gone Troppo 10. Extra Texture (Read All About It) And I’ll through in my playlist: My Sweet Lord, Wah-Wah, What Is Life, Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll), Give Me Love, Miss O’Dell, Dark Horse, You, This Song, Crackerbox Palace, Here Comes The Moon, Blow Away, Faster, All Those Years Ago, Dream Away, When We Was Fab,nGot My Mind Set On You, Any Road, Marwa Blues, Run So Far. Bonus Traveling Wilburys songs: Handle Me With Care, End Of The Line.
My rankings(Worst to Best) 10.Gone Troppo 9.Somewhere In England 8.Extra Texture 7.Dark Horse 6.Living In the Material World 5.Brainwashed 4.Cloud 9 3.33 and a 1/3 2.George Harrison(1979) 1.All Things Must Pass
Don't know how I stumbled on this series, but so glad I did. It was really great to be able to binge all the reviews in one go, and it's always great to come across fellow Hari fan! Your passion for his work really shows. Thank for putting this all together! 1.) All Things Must Pass; 2.) Living In The Material World; 3.) Thirty Three & 1/3; 4.) Cloud Nine; 5.) George Harrison; 6.) Extra Texture; 7.) Dark Horse; 8.) Gone Troppo; 9.) Brainwashed; 10.) Somewhere in England
I bought "Concert for Bangladesh" before "All Things" so that was my GREAT intro to all those songs. My personal list has that on top because "Beware" and "Awaiting on You" are better live. IMHO
I swear you have a connection to my thinking. My first George record was ET when it first came out. And as a kid listening to it I felt let down. No way could I afford All Things Must Pass. I had to check it out at the library to listen to it. Thanks again for all your work
Thank you mr curtis... even that well i can't say am not George Harrison fan cause i haven't listen to his songs yet ... but your reviews opened an appetit for me to explore his music .. thank you for the effort ... god bless you
1: all things must pass joint 2nd: harrison '79 and cloud nine 4: living in the material world 5: thirty three and a third 6: brainwashed 7: dark horse 8: extra texture 9: somewhere in England 10: gone troppo
Deep Blue! One of his most haunting, heartfelt, emotional songs. I know this is an album review but wanted to give it a mention. It often gets overlooked since it never was on an album.
Thank you for all those fantastic reviews. Loved them all. My ranking: 1. ATMP (I would also like to mention Early Takes Vol. 1 here, as most songs on it are from ATMP. I play this album a lot) 2. 33 and 1/3 (My second most played album after Early Takes) 3. Brainwashed 4. LITMW 5. Cloud 9 6. Wonderwall (I have to include it, as in my opinion this album shows what an incredible talent George was. I consumed it as it was intended, by watching the movie.....and it was fun evening) 7. Dark Horse (I rather like this album, the voice does not bother me) All albums ranked 1-7 get gold fish from me. 8.George Harrison 79' 9. Extra Texture - I quite like it, particularly the song This guitar..... These are my spotted fish albums. 10-11 That leaves Somewhere in England and Gone Troppo as the worst albums, no disagreement there. Bad fish. Again, many thanks for the reviews and The History of Rock videos.
1. All Things Must Pass - 4 stars 2. Living in the Material World - 4 stars 3. Cloud Nine - 4 stars 4. George Harrison - 4 stars 5. 33 & 1/3 - 3 1/2 stars 6. Brainwashed - 3 1/2 stars 7. Dark Horse - 3 stars (I like this album more than most) 8. Extra Texture - 2 1/2 stars (a little above average. About 5 very good songs. The rest mediocre but pleasant.) I have never listened to the other 2 albums covered.
I can watch other people's ranking of George Harrison's solo stuff all day. It's much more clustered with Harrison's stuff. Like if you look the rankings for the Beatles top five it will be very diverse and different for each person. One person will have the white album #1 and the next Abbey Road...just they were so good it was like flipping coins. Harrison's top five more are closer and similar with reviewers. I wish I had the ambition to do one of my own. Thank you for doing this. I love watching and feeling the energy in other people who love the same stuff. I wish the world was maybe spending little more time appreciating the fine things in life than worrying about enemies. There is so much good in this music. It's better than medicine. It is medicine.
so what's next? Any interest in covering the rest of the solo beatle albums? then maybe at the end one big list ranking all of the solo albums by all four former beatles? Would love to see it.
I actually loved Gone Troppo. That's the great thing about music, its entirely subjective. But I would agree in general, Harrison's legacy as a song writer/recording artist is a bit of a mixed bag of hit and miss.
My personal list would be: 1. All Things Must Pass 2. Cloud Nine 3. Thirty Three & 1/3 4. George Harrison 5. Living In A Material World 6. Brainwashed 7. Dark Hoarse 8. Extra Texture 9. Somewhere In England 10. Gone Troppo
1. All things must pass 2. Cloud nine 3. George harrison 4. Living in the material world 5. Gone troppo 6. Brainwashed 7. 33 & 1/3 8. Somewhere in england 9. Extra texture 10. Dark horse
1. All things must pass 2. George Harrison 79 3. Living in the material world 4. Somewhere in England 5. Cloud nine 6. Thirty-three & 1/3 7. Brainwashed 8. Dark horse 9. Extra texture 10. Gone troppo
ATMP has been praised to the high heavens (pun intended) for decades.....and deservedly so. Is it bloated? Yes. Are there some songs that could have been passed over? Sure. Could we have a little less of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound? Oh most certainly. ATMP lives up to its legend.....but if I had to go to a desert island with only one George solo album......I'll pick Cloud 9. Great video once again!
I love self titled so much, Love Comes to Everyone is probably my all time favorite GH solo song (wild opinion I know, considering the towering All Things Must Pass record)
It's all the matter of personal taste anyway. The wise people will be listening to the albums and building their own visions of the importance of this or that title. I recently watched another ranking video of GH albums and intentionally played the albums the "reviewer" rated low, including Extra Texture and Gone Troppo... The former one was actually the first GH solo album I heard, and, being (then) a convinced McCartney fan, I realised that George is a great composer and master of melodies and harmonies. The latter - Gone Troppo - passed me by because I read some "reviews" where it was rated quite low (because when one praises some titles s/he must find others for intentionally lowering their value). When I became wiser and felt that there is only one person responsible for my tastes - myself - I simply played it.... And I never had any hesitation about the greatness of Somewhere In England. So to say, I am so happy these two albums are in their honorable positions on my shelves and in my heart. P.S. I hope the first half of Dark Horse will also resonate with me one day.
Can I just say I love your channel it is very fantastic and great education I am a massive massive Beatles on your channel open me up to some other great artists I think your channel fantastic the history of rock and roll is great for educational purposes and I'm looking forward to the video that you ready tomorrow top 10 guitarists now that's going to be great my personal favourite is all Things Must Pass fantastic album keep up the good work buddy
1. All Things Must Pass 2. 33 1/3 3. George Harrison (1979) Those, plus the single"Give Me Love" is all the George Harrison solo stuff I need. At his best, George's material is every bit as good as John and Paul's best, but musically he just didn't have Paul's work ethic during the solo years, and really, who does? Another unpopular opinion: I wish Jeff Lynne had never gotten within a recording studio's distance of any Beatle. The Threetles "reunion" from the early 90's was a mistake ("Real Love" is a great song, and John's acoustic guitar demo is superior and sounds, well, real!). Jeff's production style is too slick for my taste, it sounds pre-fab. I think for most people, 33 & 1/3 will be the one that surprises new listeners the most, in a good way. Thanks for the video, always interesting hearing other people's opinions......
Here’s my ranking: 1. Living in the Material World (I think it’s the closest to George’s musical vision) 2. All Things Must Pass (Some of George’s best songs) 3. Dark Horse (Hot take, but George’s personal drama really carries this one) 4. Thirty Three & 1/3 (Peak Harrison funk!) 5. Wonderwall Music (I consider this an essential Harrison listen given its Indian music, even if it’s a film soundtrack) 6. George Harrison (Has a fantastic first half, the second half loses steam for me) 7. Brainwashed (A great end to Harrison’s career, even if I don’t click with every musical idea) 8. Extra Texture (Like Dark Horse, there’s an element of personal drama I like, even if it drags at times) 9. Gone Troppo (A bit weird, but has a lot of interesting moments and a nice tropical theme) 10. Cloud Nine (Hot take, but I don’t think it’s all that authentic to George’s music, still has some bangers on it) 11. Somewhere in England (There’s a great album somewhere between the original and final tracklists, but as is, it’s a mess) 12. Apple Jam (Yes, I give Apple Jam its own spot, it’s a fine bunch of jams, but that’s it, It’s Johnny’s Birthday is great though) 13. Electronic Sound (Interesting experience to say the least, but definitely the least listenable Harrison album)
1. Thirty-Three & 1/3, 2. Cloud Nine, 3. George Harrison, 4. All Things Must Pass, 5. Living in the Material World, 6. Somewhere In England, 7. Gone Troppo, 8. Brainwashed, 9. Extra Texture, 10. Dark Horse.
Cheer Down, This Is Love, Isn't It A Pity, The Inner Light, Love version of Tomorrow Never Knows/Within You Without You, George & Paul Simon version of Homeward Bound, This Song.
1. Living in the Material World 2. All Things Must Pass 3. Brainwashed 4. George Harrison 5. 33 1/3 6. Somewhere in England 7. Gone Troppo 8. Cloud 9 9. Dark Horse
I think this is the best Beatles Solo Album..even if it does not contain the best song..The 50th anniversary version finally fixed Phil Spector's reverb addiction as well
Top 10 No live albums: 1 All Things Must Pass (2 CD's) - 1970 2 Dark Horse - 1974 3 Extra Texture - 1975 4 Living In The Material World - 1973 5 Thirty Three and 1/3 - 1976 6 George Harrison - 1979 7 Cloud Nine - 1987 8 Gone Troppo - 1982 9 Somewhere In England 10 Wonderwall - 1968
I am the mind that George was the most consistent of the four Beatles when it comes to their solo albums. You really can make the case that Harrison never really put out a bad album. There are enough good moments on “Extra Texture Read All About It” that I enjoy listening to it, even though, in my opinion, it might be Harrison’s weakest albums. My ranking of his studio albums, excluding “Wonderwall Music” and “Electronic Sound” are: 1. “All Things Must Pass”, 2. “Thirty Three & 1/3”, 3. “Living In The Material World”, 4. “George Harrison” 5. “Cloud Nine”, 6. “Gone Troppo”, 7. “Dark Horse”, 8. “Somewhere In England”, 9. “Brainwashed”, 10. “Extra Texture Read All About It”.
My list: 11. Gone Troppo 10. Dark Horse 9. Somewhere In England 8. Extra Texture 7. George Harrison 6. Live In Japan 5. Thirty Three and ⅓ 4. Brainwashed 3. Living In The Material World 2. All Things Must Pass 1. Cloud Nine
10 - Dark Horse 9 - Gone Troppo 8 - Somewhere In England 7 - Extra Texture 6 - Living In The Material World 5 - Brainwashed 4 - George Harrison 3 - Cloud Nine 2 - Thirty Three & 1/3 1 - ALL THINGS MUST PASS
I've discovered these videos over the past month or so and I've really enjoyed watching them. Here's my ranking from worst to best with thoughts about the albums overall: 10. Extra Texture - This is a snooze. I really like the three opening tracks (You, Answer's at the End and This Guitar) but the rest are just boring pea mush, aside from the closing His Name Is Legs which is annoyingly brain dead. 9. Somewhere In England - A complete mess. I like Life Itself, All Those Years Ago, Teardrops and Writing's On The Wall but the rest is just the worst bits of early 80s cheese such as Save the World. 8. Dark Horse - I feel like this album could've been better. Even though his voice suffers here, I really like Ding Dong Ding Dong, Dark Horse and So Sad, my favourite on the album. Overall, it's okay. 7. Gone Troppo - Believe it or not, I actually quite like this album. There are a few stinkers (I Really Love You comes to mind), but Wake Up My Love and Gone Troppo are fun, That's the Way It Goes is also nice and Dream Away is in my top 10 George songs. Good album to play on holiday. 6. George Harrison - I like this as well. Love Comes to Everyone, Blow Away and Faster are great but I also like Here Comes the Moon, Dark Sweet Lady and If You Believe. Once again, a fun album to play. 5. Living in the Material World - Very soulful. My favourite is Living in the Material World, a really funky song. Also there's Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth), The Light That Has Lighted the World and Try Some Buy Some. 4. Thirty Three & 1/3 - His best album in years. Woman Don't You Cry for Me is a great opener and I also like This Song, Crackerbox Palace, It's What You Value, Beautiful Girl and the catchy See Yourself. 3. Cloud Nine - One of my favourite albums of the 80s and of George's catalog. My favourite is When We Was Fab, along with This Is Love, Fish on the Sand, Devil's Radio and the criminally underrated Just for Today. Only bad song is Breath Away from Heaven. 2. All Things Must Pass - What else can I say. A classic. My favourite song is If Not for You as well as the wonderful My Sweet Lord. Title track is very moving as well. 1. Brainwashed - My favourite of George's albums. I like every song on here and I can only imagine what the album would be like had George seen it be finished. Stuck Inside A Cloud is just wonderful along with Rising Sun and Any Road, among others. Overall, these videos were great to watch and I'd be interested if you do any more of these for any other artists. :)
It’s hard to rank. ATMP is number one and Material World is 2. Cloud 9 is phenomenal. But I’ve been listening to GH 79 and Gone Troppo. In 79 he sounds so happy. Your love is forever is beautiful. I get really inspired by If you believe. I discovered Gone Troppo from Joe Brown singing That’s the way it goes. I loved Dream Away. George’s worse music is a lot better than some other’s best music.
My Rankings (The Correct Rankings) 1. Living in The Material World 2. Self-Titled 3. ATMP 4. Gone Troppo 5. Extra Texture 6. Dark Horse 7. 33 1/3 8. Somewhere in England 9. Wonderwall Music 10. Cloud Nine 11. Brainwashed 12. Electronic Sound
I'm with you on "Gone Troppo" and "Extra Texture." "Somewhere In England" though --- how could you do that?! Love that one. I would have switched SIE with 33 1/3 on this list
@@JTCurtisMusic Ya, I guess I can see what you're saying about "Teardrops." That is an awful song -- but "All Those Years Ago" "Writing's On The Wall," and "Baltimore Oriole" (Yes, I LOVE that song) more than make up for it IMO. I really wish they had replaced :Teardrops" and "Blood From A Clone" with the 2 that they had originally cut. I do enjoy "Hong Kong Blues" and had no idea it was a remake.
I haven't heard this album in a few yrs but I just re-listened to "Baltimore Oriole." I also did not know this was a remake. To me, it sounds sophisticated and beautiful. It used to make me very emotional when I was younger.
@@JTCurtisMusic Probably "Dream Away". By "charm", I think I mean especially the opener, "Wake Up My Love" - I always picture the opening credits to an 80s sports film like All the Right Moves or Vision Quest when I hear it, lol.
1: Harrison 79 2: Living in the material world 3:Extra texture 4:Dark horse 5:Thirty three and a third 6: All tings must pass 7:Gone troppo 8:Cloud nine 9:Brain washed 10:Somewhere in England
Nnnoooooo, *Gone Troppo* is the feeling of vacation distilled into an album! It's cheesy but it's sweet simple fun. Personally, it's far, far, *far* better than *Dark Horse*, *Extra Texture*, & *Somewhere in England*. Despite some higher highs, I may even prefer it as a more even and feel-good listening experience than *Living in the Material World* and *Cloud Nine*... :O
I know that you don't like it when I repost a comment, but I'll do it anyway because I want my opinion to be heard. So here are my thoughts about George's solo career and certain albums: I think that All Things Must Pass is truly the greatest Beatles Solo Album, I absolutely loathe Woman Don't You Cry For me as many Rock veterans went for that Funk sound and I feel that this was a sign of them losing relevance, I didn't think there would be a worse George Harrison album after Somewhere in England, but Gone Troppo proved me wrong. SIN itself could've been a great album, but we can blame the establishment of the Punk/New Wave Empire (1976-1991) for killing artistic integrity in Rock music. Cloud 9 is a great album, and I might use Marwa Blues for studying in the near future as it sounds very relaxing. With all of that being said, how do you feel about doing an album reviews of another artist? I already suggested John Lennon as his solo career is also a wild ride
1. All Things Must Pass. 2. Cloud Nine. 3. 33 and 1/3. 4. Dark Horse. 5. Brainwashed. 6. Extra Texture (Read All About It). 7. Somewhere In England. 8. Living In The Material World. 9. Gone Troppo. 10. George Harrison. George Harrison never made a truly bad album as far as I'm concerned, but there are some that I find to be much better than others. Whereas his fellow Beatles' solo careers have been far more hit and miss, McCartney has released so much brilliant material but he's always struck me as a "quantity over quality" kind of artist in that for every masterpiece there's at least 2 albums that are mostly awful. With Ringo, it very much depends on who he's working with. John's solo works were probably overall the weakest in my opinion, but when he was good he was amazing, albums like Mind Games and Walls And Bridges are incredible, Imagine is mostly pretty solid, but otherwise it's pretty hit and miss.
I have All Things Must Pass, and after listening to the others a couple of years ago i'm pretty glad i never bought one. Only liked 12 tracks, 5 from Cloud Nine. Not one of those 12 would make it into a top 5000, so I wouldn't really mind never listening to them again, not that they are bad, and clearly good enough for a record company to invest in, but there is too much music way more appealing to me..Even in 1987 when he had a rather big cover hit with Got My Mind Set On You,I didn't find it worthy to copy it to a hits compilation audio tape, let alone run to the record shop to buy the album. Nor those other two, All Those Years Ago/When We Were Fab that only were minor hits over here.. So, rather ironically, Harrison never did anything really interesting after his Beatles years except All Things Must Pass. ( after relistening I have some doubts about Give Me Love, sounds rather as a second rate Bob Dylan track, but not bad)
MI RANKING DE LA DISCOGRAFÍA DE GEORGE HARRISON ES: 01. ALL THINGS MUST PASS 1970 02. CLOUD NINE 1987 03. 33 & 1/3 1976 04. GEORGE HARRISON 1979 05. BRAINWASHED 2002 06. LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD 1973 07. SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND 1981 08. LIVE IN JAPAN 1992 09. GONE TROPPO 1982 10. WONDERWALL 1968 11. EXTRA TEXTURE 1975 12, DARK HORSE 1974 13. ELECTRONIC SOUNDS 1969 CONSIDERO QUE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH NO ES UN DISCO DE GEORGE HARRISON PER SE SINO MAS BIEN UNA COMUNIÓN SOLIDARIA DE MÚSICOS POR UNA BUENA CAUSA
So are u saying Concert for Bangladesh is NOT a George Harrison album. I can understand that. However, think it through. If it’s not his, whose is it? It’s arguably his most important contribution to greater society and culture!
I've never considered "All Things Must Past" a triple album. To me it's always been a double album. The third record called "Apple Jam" contains only throwaway jamming of no musical value. And these jams got nothing to do with the wonderful music on the rest of the album. He could have sold his "Apple Jam" record separately for those with special interests. I wished that George would have released it in the more handy formate of a gatefold double album. I've never liked this totally unnecessary box set and this clumsy packaging. But I must admit that I felt extremely excited befor I had opened it to check what was inside. I guess I've never got over the disappointment of the content on the jam record. It kind of spoiled it a bit for me. I was so glad when "Material World" came and sort of continued in the same mould as "All Things.." PS I would have given "Extra Texture" a better ranking - even though I understand your thoughts on it. "Cloud Nine" is a gem. On "Brainwashed" it's only "Pieces Fish" that I really like - or is my favourite track. "Stuck Inside a Cloud" is also a nice song.
Seriously, why does everyone automatically dismiss those first 2 experimental albums?? Honestly, I consider _Wonderwall Music_ better than at least half of his proper albums.
I talked about it in an earlier review (See The Beatles one). WONDERWALL MUSIC is not a terrible album by any means, but comparing it to these other conventional albums doesn't make any sense. It's like comparing the orchestral pieces from YELLOW SUBMARINE to other Beatles songs. Great music, but I don't really consider them Beatles songs. ELECTRONIC SOUND much more so. However if I WAS to include them, WONDERWALL MUSIC would still be pretty low and ELECTRONIC SOUND would be dead last. Bad as GONE TROPPO may be, at least it's still music.
@@JTCurtisMusic Well, I would refrain from ranking _Yellow Submarine_ with the other Beatles albums, since it was slapped together after the initial idea to release the 4 exclusive songs from the movie (along with "Across the Universe") as an EP fell through, due to the realization by the band that Americans never really bought EP's. But _Wonderwall Music,_ on the other hand, is all original music from George... and not nearly as bland as a lot of his later albums. I do agree, though, that _Electronic Sound_ is a slog, and anyone not ranking it last would have to be crazy enough to *not* also rank _All Things Must Pass_ and _Cloud Nine_ as #1 and #2, respectively.
@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy True but the orchestrations on the B-side ARE original compositions (even if they are from George Martin). But again, that music is for a soundtrack. Having done soundtracks myself, it's very different scoring for a film than making commercial music intended for airplay. And even then, I can't say there's anything on WONDERWALL MUSIC I'd listen to over "All Those Years Ago" or "You" (my essential tracks from SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND and EXTRA TEXTURE respectively).
as a huge lennon fan i found "all those years ago" very disappointing, annoying synths buried backing vocals and a campfire type feel. a solid stinker, it charted well but a lot of critics and fans like myself did not like it at all.
1. ATMP 2. Extra Texture -- Atmospheric and soulful 3. 33 and 1/3 -- George at his most buoyant. 4. Cloud Nine -- Like Dylan with "Blood on the Tracks", George suddenly has a renewed sense of purpose 5. Brainwashed -- AKA Cloud Nine , Part 2. 6. Dark Horse -- There are some under-performers here, but there's also the bouncy "Maya Love", the sly title track, and the gorgeous "So Sad". 7. Wonderwall -- Quirky and fun 8. Material World -- "Don't Let Me Wait too Long", and the lovely "That is All" stand out. The rest is self-indulgent preaching. 9. George Harrison -- AKA "In a Coma". Only "Your Love is Forever" differentiates itself from the surrounding boring mush. 10 Somewhere in England -- ZZZZZZ 11. Gone Troppo -- The anonymous last leg of the "Who Cares?" trilogy. 12. Electronic Sound -- More unlistenable than "Two Virgins". Quite a feat!
So glad you finally put Electronic Sounds at #1
Nobody mentions "Run of the Mill", when the brass kicks in... oh boy!
I will (for the most part) agree with your opinion of Gone Troppo with one exception. I think that “Mystical One” is one of the most beautiful and insightful songs George ever wrote. Incredibly moving.
I love Circles, Dream Away and That's The Way It Goes.
I have to agree with you. During my teenage years, Mystical One was my favourite George Harrison song. He hit the ball out of the park with that tune.
THANK YOU
That’s EXACTLY what I was going to write about Gone Troppo.
Extra Texture (Read All About It)

I agree with Todd so much. Rubber soul is definitely my favorite Beatles album
14:32 "The fact that it is a double album it does go on a little too long"
I bought "Concert for Bangladesh" before "All Things" so that was my GREAT intro to all those songs. My personal list has that on top because "Beware" and "Awaiting on You" are better live. IMHO
I agree! I watched the concert before fully listening to all things must pass and I really liked Awaiting on You All.
early takes is such a good album too, really raw and it’s great to hear the all things must pass songs without all of the editing
Wow, what a journey it has been! Can't wait to see what's no. 1. I bet it's All Things Must Pass.
Can't Stop Thinking About You and This Guitar Can't keep from Crying ... from Extra Texture are superb ... surprised you can't see this.

Horses for courses, I guess. "George Harrison" ('79) is far and away my favorite.
My Sweet Lord will probably remain my favorite single of all time forever
Behind That Locked Door deserves more praise. I think it has one of the most beautiful steel guitar parts of all time. Give it another listen.

5. 33 & 1/3 - 3 1/2 stars
6. Brainwashed - 3 1/2 stars
7. Dark Horse - 3 stars (I like this album more than most)
8. Extra Texture - 2 1/2 stars (a little above average. About 5 very good songs. The rest mediocre but pleasant.)
I have never listened to the other 2 albums covered.
Am i the only one who liked'Gone Troppo"?
No. I liked it a lot. Underrated
I like it, just not as much as most of his other albums. I prefer it to the 79 album though.
No you are not, i love it!
Nope. Bought it when it came out. ‘Mystical One’, ‘Gone Troppo’ and ‘Circles’ are great.
I really love you is a fun tune also
I can watch other people's ranking of George Harrison's solo stuff all day.
It is medicine.
well done, appreciate the agonised choosing
so what's next? Any interest in covering the rest of the solo beatle albums? then maybe at the end one big list ranking all of the solo albums by all four former beatles? Would love to see it.
I actually loved Gone Troppo. That's the great thing about music, its entirely subjective. But I would agree in general, Harrison's legacy as a song writer/recording artist is a bit of a mixed bag of hit and miss.
My personal list would be:
1. All Things Must Pass
2. Cloud Nine
3. Thirty Three & 1/3
4. George Harrison
5. Living In A Material World
6. Brainwashed
7. Dark Hoarse
8. Extra Texture
9. Somewhere In England
10. Gone Troppo
I 90% agree with this list, and you reviews are well thought out.
Great review. I can't say I agree with all this but you have certainly put your time in.
What would your list be?
Dang he really just never answered
Wow bob
Wow! I loved Cloud 9, and I had it on vinyl all those years ago! :)
Thank you for this seeres you intridoust me to all of George’s solo stuff and now he is one of my faivorits
1. All things must pass 2. Cloud nine 3. George harrison 4. Living in the material world 5. Gone troppo 6. Brainwashed 7. 33 & 1/3 8. Somewhere in england 9. Extra texture 10. Dark horse
YES the grabbing the air during Let It Down was so relatable
With MAL software, it’d be great to get rid of all that reverb from All Things Must Pass.
Listen to the 50th anniversary remix of the album, it removes most of the reverb, drastic difference IMO.
@@siin_07 Don't like that mix at all. I have it but prefer a fan remix on YT.
@spaceengineer1452 I'd love to hear the fanmade mix, can you share it?
1. All things must pass
2. George Harrison 79
3. Living in the material world
4. Somewhere in England
5. Cloud nine
6. Thirty-three & 1/3
7. Brainwashed
8. Dark horse
9. Extra texture
Thank you so much for the kind words. Hope you enjoy more to come!
1. All Things Must Pass
2. 33 1/3
3. George Harrison (1979)
Those, plus the single"Give Me Love" is all the George Harrison solo stuff I need.
Any road & woman don't you cry for me are very underated
Big disagreement on Brainwashed.. the best after ATMP. Pisces Fish, Any Road, title track....all fantastic.
Between the devil and the deep blue sea is a great song of George’s (ik it’s a cover) i’ve listened to it almost every day since I found out about it
My top 4
1. All things must pass
2. Living in the material world
3. Thirty three 1/3
4. Dark Horse
Then all the rest
Here’s my ranking:
1. Living in the Material World (I think it’s the closest to George’s musical vision)
2. All Things Must Pass (Some of George’s best songs)
3. Dark Horse (Hot take, but George’s personal drama really carries this one)
4. Thirty Three & 1/3 (Peak Harrison funk!)
5. Wonderwall Music (I consider this an essential Harrison listen given its Indian music, even if it’s a film soundtrack)
6. George Harrison (Has a fantastic first half, the second half loses steam for me)
7. Brainwashed (A great end to Harrison’s career, even if I don’t click with every musical idea)
8. Extra Texture (Like Dark Horse, there’s an element of personal drama I like, even if it drags at times)
9. Gone Troppo (A bit weird, but has a lot of interesting moments and a nice tropical theme)
10. Cloud Nine (Hot take, but I don’t think it’s all that authentic to George’s music, still has some bangers on it)
11. Somewhere in England (There’s a great album somewhere between the original and final tracklists, but as is, it’s a mess)
12. Apple Jam (Yes, I give Apple Jam its own spot, it’s a fine bunch of jams, but that’s it, It’s Johnny’s Birthday is great though)
13. Electronic Sound (Interesting experience to say the least, but definitely the least listenable Harrison album)
Check out Splinter's debut LP. George is all over it.
You nailed his top 10. I agree entirely with your choices for the order and the reasons why.
For me it has always been All Things.... not even close. In my top 20 of all time.
Thanks.

3. Brainwashed
4. George Harrison
5. 33 1/3
6. Somewhere in England
7. Gone Troppo
8. Cloud 9
9. Dark Horse
I think this is the best Beatles Solo Album..even if it does not contain the best song..The 50th anniversary version finally fixed Phil Spector's reverb addiction as well

So here's my review of you;I respect your opinion.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
Im no musician but Marwa Blues sounds like it could be on Wish you were here.
I Have No understanding for critizise Brainwashed

2 - Thirty Three & 1/3
1 - ALL THINGS MUST PASS
I've discovered these videos over the past month or so and I've really enjoyed watching them. Here's my ranking from worst to best with thoughts about the albums overall:
My Rankings (The Correct Rankings)
1. Living in The Material World
2. Self-Titled
3. ATMP
4. Gone Troppo
5. Extra Texture
6. Dark Horse
7. 33 1/3
8. Somewhere in England
9. Wonderwall Music
10. Cloud Nine
11. Brainwashed

Did you do the for John Lennon solo ?
I'm considering it.
@@JTCurtisMusic just like starting over was his best song!
Wonderwall is George's second or third best album - and it has no religion in the lyrics too unless you count singing om so maybe it's my fave!
Commenting before the video even starts.
I'm gonna allow it
"All Things Must Pass," was written while George was waiting to see his proctologist.
I swear I'm not trolling here. But I think Gone Troppo has a lot of charm to it. I really enjoy it as a relic of the 1980s.
You have a favorite track on it?
@@JTCurtisMusic Probably "Dream Away". By "charm", I think I mean especially the opener, "Wake Up My Love" - I always picture the opening credits to an 80s sports film like All the Right Moves or Vision Quest when I hear it, lol.
MY LIST IS SAME AS YOURS!!! 👍👏🤗
From Extra Texture, Your Guitar Can’t Keep From Crying is a good track.
Does Todd not know that ATMP is a triple, not a double album?
1: Harrison 79 2: Living in the material world 3:Extra texture 4:Dark horse 5:Thirty three and a third 6: All tings must pass 7:Gone troppo 8:Cloud nine 9:Brain washed 10:Somewhere in England
what are you gonna start reviewing after this?
Nnnoooooo, *Gone Troppo* is the feeling of vacation distilled into an album! It's cheesy but it's sweet simple fun.
Personally, it's far, far, *far* better than *Dark Horse*, *Extra Texture*, & *Somewhere in England*. Despite some higher highs, I may even prefer it as a more even and feel-good listening experience than *Living in the Material World* and *Cloud Nine*... :O
Love the Bills hat!!
Any chance you could review all of Tom Petty's albums??
I would choose Circles over Unkown Delight and Not guilty over Blow away
I know that you don't like it when I repost a comment, but I'll do it anyway because I want my opinion to be heard. So here are my thoughts about George's solo career and certain albums:
I think that All Things Must Pass is truly the greatest Beatles Solo Album, I absolutely loathe Woman Don't You Cry For me as many Rock veterans went for that Funk sound and I feel that this was a sign of them losing relevance, I didn't think there would be a worse George Harrison album after Somewhere in England, but Gone Troppo proved me wrong.
Thank you. I'll have to decide later on. Got some other priorities at the moment as the quarantine's being lifted.
@@JTCurtisMusic You're very much welcome
Not one of those 12 would make it into a top 5000, so I wouldn't really mind never
listening to them again, not that they are bad, and clearly good enough for a record company to invest in, but there is too
much music way more appealing to me..Even in 1987 when he had a rather big cover hit with Got My Mind Set On You,I didn't find it worthy to copy
it to a hits compilation audio tape, let alone run to the record shop to buy the album. Nor those other two, All Those Years Ago/When We Were Fab that
only were minor hits over here.. So, rather ironically, Harrison never did anything really interesting after his Beatles years except All Things Must Pass.
( after relistening I have some doubts about Give Me Love, sounds rather as a second rate Bob Dylan track, but not bad)
MI RANKING DE LA DISCOGRAFÍA DE GEORGE HARRISON ES:
01. ALL THINGS MUST PASS 1970
02. CLOUD NINE 1987
03. 33 & 1/3 1976
04. GEORGE HARRISON 1979
05. BRAINWASHED 2002
06. LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD 1973
07. SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND 1981
08. LIVE IN JAPAN 1992
09. GONE TROPPO 1982
10. WONDERWALL 1968
11. EXTRA TEXTURE 1975
12, DARK HORSE 1974
13. ELECTRONIC SOUNDS 1969
CONSIDERO QUE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH NO ES UN DISCO DE GEORGE HARRISON PER SE SINO MAS BIEN UNA COMUNIÓN SOLIDARIA DE MÚSICOS POR UNA BUENA CAUSA
I thinknthat extra texture is one of my favourite albums. I can't understand hour putting down.
Unpopular opinion, but I love Dark Horse
So are u saying Concert for Bangladesh is NOT a George Harrison album. I can understand that. However, think it through. If it’s not his, whose is it?
It’s arguably his most important contribution to greater society and culture!
I really like extra texture, but then again, I don't take music that seriously.
Todd is great but why hold the guitar?
I was so glad when "Material World" came and sort of continued in the same mould as "All Things.."
PS
I would have given "Extra Texture" a better ranking - even though I understand your thoughts on it.
"Cloud Nine" is a gem. On "Brainwashed" it's only "Pieces Fish" that I really like - or is my favourite track.
"Stuck Inside a Cloud" is also a nice song.
George Harrison 79 A Perfect Record
LIVE IN JAPAN 1991/2
There are at least a few or more excellent songs on all Georges albums and some fillers, but that us true of the other 3 Beatles solo albums as well.
Thumbs dows, sorry. Extra Texture IS a very good and entertaining album. I love it. Every albums from the 70s are good.
i love this goldfish rating system
HOW YOU DOESN'T PUT THE WONDERWALL MUSİC AND ELECTRONİC SOUND IN THE LIST 😠😠😠
I like your shirt
Dear one is about George's son Dhani, not a guru
@@Quarrymen-ed5me Dhani wasn’t even born yet when that song came out
try fleetwood mac future games this is an ALBUM
as a huge lennon fan i found "all those years ago" very disappointing, annoying synths buried backing vocals and a campfire type feel. a solid stinker, it charted well but a lot of critics and fans like myself did not like it at all.
1. ATMP
2. Extra Texture -- Atmospheric and soulful
3. 33 and 1/3 -- George at his most buoyant.
4. Cloud Nine -- Like Dylan with "Blood on the Tracks", George suddenly has a renewed sense of purpose
5. Brainwashed -- AKA Cloud Nine , Part 2.
6. Dark Horse -- There are some under-performers here, but there's also the bouncy "Maya Love", the sly title track, and the gorgeous "So Sad".
7. Wonderwall -- Quirky and fun
8. Material World -- "Don't Let Me Wait too Long", and the lovely "That is All" stand out. The rest is self-indulgent preaching.
9. George Harrison -- AKA "In a Coma". Only "Your Love is Forever" differentiates itself from the surrounding boring mush.
10 Somewhere in England -- ZZZZZZ
11. Gone Troppo -- The anonymous last leg of the "Who Cares?" trilogy.
12. Electronic Sound -- More unlistenable than "Two Virgins". Quite a feat!
It has some good songs but it's not my favorite. I like the 79 album and 33& 1/3 much better
Which one?
