I think it's a possibility that if Siegward committed suicide, a fitting end would be poison in his toast to his friend. He takes a nap like always...thinking of his friend, duty fullfilled.....only he doesn't wake. His final toast.
Could also be him killing himself with the Storm Ruler. Ending his life with the same blade he used to end his friend's.

You toast with Siegward throughout the game, it's one of his trademarks. Just from a player's/writer's perspective, a final toast suicide makes the most sense in his storytelling.
Saturn Ascension Siegward doesn't seem like the suicidal type to me. I always thought he returned to Catarina, before this video anyway... How sad. I would've liked that ending much more. Well, that's Dark Souls for you, RIP Siegward.

I always kill onion the first time I meet him. Not this time though.
Yhorm is easily my favorite of the souls series. Hated his whole life. Hated in death. Tried his hardest to uphold his duty and still failed.
You can feel the harsh emotions that he feels, not only with that but also losing someone dear to him.
And yet its because of that that I have the greatest love and respect for this Lord among all others.

I think he succeeded in his own way by not ushering in the dark age cause let’s be real if he wanted to in his first attempt he could’ve just ended it all But even though he “failed” he still attempted to do what he precive to be the right thing so I feel like the second time around he still didn’t want to bring about the end times but he also knew linking the flame was bullshit so he just sat and waited for something

What is it with Japan (or Asian developers in general) and naming the best gear after onions?
I like to think that Seigward delays his duty on purpose. He gets caught in a trap. Sits to enjoy normalcy. He also visits the giant that shoots arrows at you. What did he say to him? or did he just get a branch. he wants to delay killing his old friend.
H I think he wanted to give him time, time to rethink and retry to relight the flame, time for him to evade upholding his promise, having hope that his friend would willingly go on to do his duty... That's the tragedy here, even when he saw his friend evading his duty, he still held onto hope that the Lord of Cinder he once called friend, would once again uphold his duty.
That and unlike so many other lords, his friend wasnt directly harming anyone. He wasnt slaughtering himself repeatedly, devouring a god in a tower, reviving his dead brother into servitude, he was sitting upon his old throne in a dead city.

Makes sense, the universe pretty much said... "I am bringing you back to life into an age of decay on the brink of the world as its known ending. Your job is to kill a close friend who is feeling grumpy about burning alive a second time and then right after you have to die".
I wouldn't do any of it period, I don't blame him.
My favourite part of this story is how Yhorm is represented by his weapons at different parts of the story.
With a shield when he had something to protect, and without when he had nothing left to lose.

VaatiVidya time is convoluted, did you consider the location and surroundings of the zweihander in dark souls 1? a Catarina weapon perhaps, near the largest tombstone, guarded by a giant skeleton? lore worthy
Man, this really puts yhorm into perspective. Imagine being told constantly that you were inadiquate, and then after sacrificing everything to prove your doubters wrong you woke from death to find they were right. No wonder yhorm sits alone in his throne room, that's heavy shit even for a giant.
Maybe Yhorm didn't return because he feared dying again, but because he feared linking the flame. I mean, last time he did it, he killed thousands.

I think Aldrich was the only "bad" Lord of Cinder. Lothric wanted nothing to do with his destiny because it would mean his death, and he refused, with his brother Lorian protecting him. But his refusal resulted in them being cursed. The Abyss Watchers were in the same shoes as Artorias. But Aldrich just liked to eat people.

Siegward was trying to delay the fact that he had to kill his old friend i.e Visiting the giant in the undead settlement, fighting the fire demon, going to the cathedral of the deep, getting trapped in a well without armour (even though it was yoinked by patches), making some soup and taking a nap in Irithyll, getting put in a cell in Irithyll dungeon, all this for his old friend to have more time to live before his end of the promise is held Siegward is one of the most kind hearted characters in Dark Souls history and this is one of the reasons why
I think it's because he still wanted to believe Yhorm would do his duty once again by linking the fire, but Yhorm just doesn't care anymore for smt that already burn his kingdom to the dust, all he wanted is just waiting for siegward to fulfill his promise..

Well it ain't really a breeze getting to the profaned capital...
I think it is because Siegward can't fast travel through the bonfires. So to actually get to the profaned capital, he had to travel through all these lands on foot. While also needing to eat, sleep, and make it through hordes of monsters/trials.

I think he knew...because he refers to himself (and you) both as Unkindled and Undead. But if I were a betting man, I think the only thing holding a man that positive upright in these dire times was a promise to an old friend....he may cry "LONG MAY THE SUN SHINE!"....but he knew, once he defeated Yhorm and completed his promise....he would hollow. And he had no desire to do that, especially if it meant risking hurting someone as valorous and as kind as you, whom without your help, his duty would remain unfulfilled.
Siegward is one of the best damn tragic heroes in the game, right alongside Anri.

undeads without a reason to continue go hollow, as far as we know, Siegward only keep his humanity because of his promise to Yhrom, that, should he one day rise from the dead... he will kill him... and with Yhorm dead, Siegward have nothing left to do, and an undead with nothing else to do goes hollow
going hollow means giving up or losing your purpose. By extension people that dont finish the game, or stop playing and/or people in life with no purpose just going around aimlessly, in a way are hollows.. well done miyazaki

Aldrich: Is doing his own thing devouring gods and seeking power to go to the deep.
Yhorm: Linking the fire screwed up his kingdom the first time, why would he do that shit again?
Lothric/Lorian: Actively do not want to link the fire, believing that the coming of the age of dark would be for the best.
I like how the lords all have reasons of their own instead of relying solely on "because it reeeeeeeally hurts to be burnt alive"

@@rangopistacho6928 No that's not the reason. Lothric was meant to, but unable to (likely). Lorian was more than capable, but chose instead to share his brother's curse. Even in their crippled state, they could absolutely do it (in fact, Boss VS Boss battle shows that the Twin Princes beat the Soul of Cinder). They simply chose not to. Though it is heavily implied that Sulyvahn and Kaathe influenced their choice, it is a willing process.
Sorry for the necropost but the abyss watchers aren't just killing each other, they swore to destroy the abyss and now they themselves are tainted by the abyss. So they keep killing each other over and over, performing their duty even if it means killing their friends. Could've worded it better but maybe there's a video on it somewhere.

After fighting him countless times, I paid attention once to his animations, particularly when you hit him with the storm ruler. He seems to shake his head, almost like he realizes what he is doing, but cant stop. This may just be him shaking off the shock from the blast of storm ruler, but I thought it was worth pointing out.
It also seems as though Yhorm is smiling in the cutscene with siegward.

Pontiff pure endurance build. You know your fucked when a boss dual wields Greatswords of fire and dark like they were daggers, capable of instantly stabbing you from ten meters then following with a 6 hit combo, only to discover that this is phase 1 and phase 2 means two of them spamming AoE magic attacks, where each attack takes half of your health.

I never realized that siegward dies after the fight against Yhorm. This makes me kinda sad now
I always thought of it less of him dying and more of he's finally at rest and able to move on. He's probably one of the few characters in souls to actually get anything close to a happy ending.

I was like “GO GET HIM SIEGWARD OF CATARINA!!!” Unreal the emotion this game can evoke with such little dialogue
I have a Love/Hate relationship with this series. I absolutely love the Lore but Hate when I start feeling sad for killing the person the video is about.
Then you realize you have to kill a kind npc for arguably the best chime in the game.

I have a theory that the one yhorm wished to protect, was siegward. siegward Is ash, and we know that means he tried to link the fire at some point, we also know the fire started fading somewhat before yhorm started using only his blade, considering the fact that it seems like not much time passed between yhorm getting rid of his shield, and him becoming a lord of cinder. My theory is that siegward tryed linking the fire, but failed and died. This then made yhorm toss away his shield and ad a notch to the opposite end of his blade so it could easily be used with two hands. We also know that ash can keep there weapons on their revival, so siegward could still have the stormruller that yhorm gave him. And when you and him defeat yhorm his mission is complete. With yhorm defeated, his cinders returned to his throne, and with you going to link the fire, siegward ends his life using the stormruller, the same blade he used to kill his friend. Knowing that his goals were completed, and his promise was fulfilled. maybe in death, siegward could meet his old friend again.
Also, @SushiJaguar made a comment about this as well, I just thought I could add a bit more to it. Also credit to @[Ecchi] for the idea that siegward used the stormruller to kill himself.
Hey ! Just passing, I know you posted this a while ago, sonI don’t expect an answer, but who could be able to predict the future, right ?
So, I really like the theory that Yhorm’s loss is the death of Siegward, but it also raise a problem. Vaati presents the events in this order: Yhorm loses his famous unknown but precious person ; the profaned flame appears, and he throws of his shield ; he then decides to link the fire, and before that he gives a Stormruler to Siegward and asks for his word to kill him if he fails. Presented this way, Siegward has to be alive after his friend’s loss. The only possibility for Siegward to being Yhorm’s loss is that Yhorm gives the sword to his friend’s body, and asks for his word upon his tomb, without truly knowing if Siegward will fullfill hiw duty (but he could have felt that his friend was a knight of honor, being able to keep his word even in afterlife).
That’s my explanation, to anyone who passes by, feel free to answer and corrects me, i would be thanksfully grateful.
P. S. : I am just asking for compassion for my possible mistakes, english isn’t my first language.

I personally think Siegward is the one Yhorm lost, whose passing caused him to cast away his shield. After all, Siegward is an Ashen One, no? And like the Lords of Cinder, the Ashen Ones are risen from their graves by the tolling of the Firelink Bell, right? And we're never really told /when/ Siegward had Storm Ruler bequeathed to him by Yhorm, nor /when/ they were such firm friends.
That is actually a decent shout to be honest.

Certainly a great fight, just a shame he's so hard to kill without the weapon.
That's probably why he gave the sword: he was so strong that he couldn't be defeated without it. Yes he technically can, but not after alot (and I mean ALOT) of trial, error, and git gud.

It's strange how a character with such little dialogue and only one short cut scene can tell such a huge story and make you feel so many emotions. Siegward felt like my actual friend during my playthrough, and losing him was truly saddening. R.I.P Onion bro 💔
Finally the return of Prepare to Cry you have been missed old friend.
I like to think that Siegward, after keeping his promise to Yhorm, he sits down, has a nice final moment with a friend, and then he just peacefully passes, knowing his duty is fulfilled and he has nothing left to concern himself with. I just want my boy to have a happy ish ending.
The way I like to think of it is that he knew his time was almost up so after receiving that news he then found us and was aware of our quest. He felt that he was unable to uphold his old friend’s promise alone so turned to us for his support. Not only did he want to help somebody on his journey to the Profaned Capital he also wanted friendship, somebody to laugh and have fun with much like those he knew back in Catarina. He died happily with the promise of his old friend being fulfilled and by the side of a friend he found along the way.
The moroseness in Siegward's voice at the beginning of the fight is what kills me. A man so cheerful. So optimistic. So painfully joyous throughout the entire adventure.
And here he is, grasping desperately for one last thread of courage, that he may carry out his duty. Just depressing, but easily the best story in DS3 as far as my opinions are concerned

He has said it will happen, just give him some time. One thing to remember is that we still have a DLC for Edwad to do and Edwad is as unpredictable as the US president at the moment, so I think Vaati wants to wait until the facts about Edwad's existence are set in stone before making a silly video about a RP character that another TH-camr made up.

Yhorm was my favorite boss from DS3 from the moment I saw him In the opening cutscene.
Did not use the storm ruler either, the fight was way more epic without it.
This lore though, is going to make the new game plus rematch way more compelling.
Same, I actually thought the stom ruler spawned after the fight, I just walked in with Siegward and was surprised when I found out he was a mega badass with his wind sword, I let Siegward do most of the damage while I just aggroed Yhorm with my uchi and managed to defeat him first try without Siegward dying, the hype was real

I find the profaned flame so fascinating, it's like another immortal flame, similar to the first flame, but seemingly less powerful. For one, the word profaned implies that it is goes against god (or the gods). Unlike the first flame, which seems to benefit the gods more than man. It has traces of the abyss too, which is different from the first flame.
Some spoilers below, read at your own risk.
My current theory is that the flame's creation was inspired by the witch of Izalith's attempt, but actually (somewhat) successful. The Oracle noted could have been another fragment of Manus. (If they sort of represent the seven deadly sins, this one could represent envy, someone who is jealous of the first flame's power and importance). Of course, just like the witch of Izalith, the ones who created it become cursed, and transformed into those hand monsters.
Why the profaned capital was destroyed after Yhorm linked the fire I'm not sure of. One super far off idea I've had for a while is that the first flame is somewhat sentient and has some power, and after it was powered up by Yhorm it attempted to destroy the profaned flame. Unfortunately fire can't put out fire, so the rest of the profaned capital had to pay the price, while the flame itself lives on.
Finally Sulyvahn is such an interesting addition to this, I wonder if seeing the profaned flame, another everlasting flame, this one that isn't linked to the gods, could have inspired him and set him on a path to try and destroy the gods using Aldrich. He could be thinking of harnessing the power of the profaned flame, so he can live and rule without the first flame, and destroy the gods entirely, eventually leading to him ruling the world.
Also, if you believe the idea that Sulyvahn was the first scholar and mentor to Lothric, it would play into his plan to have Lothric not link the fire, not give the gods more power, and leave them open to be destroyed and replaced by himself.
I realize this is late, but I've been thinking about the demons. There origins, their history, and the effect that they and the chaos flame had on the world of Dark Souls. If you think about it, makes sense that by DS3 demonkind is dying out. They were not really supposed to exist, given birth by the Witch of Izalith's failed attempt to go against nature. The demons were at their strongest in Dark souls, lost power and numbers by Dark Souls 2, the only real possible demon we see is the smelter demon and demon of song, and are on the brink of extinction in Dark Souls 3. So it makes sense that in the upcoming dlc, the demons would make one final appearance......one final attempt to save their very existence as a race.

The Profaned Capital is Drangleic. The oracle is Alsanna, The Silent Oracle (fragment of Manus). The sisters of the oracle were the other fragments. The conqueror is the Last Giant / Giant Lord.
The crack in the mountain is meant to remind us of Things Betwixt. The treasure strewn around the throne room is meant to remind us of the treasure strewn around the arena where you fight the two Dragonriders. Even the crumbling tower where you find Laddersmith Gilligan (also found in Drangleic) is the same tower that's a part of Drangleic Castle. Also, you can find Karla (likely another fragment of Manus) near the Profaned Capital.
I had always thought Yhorm and the Capital itself was an acknowledgment of DS2

Andre, Irina and Cornyx are all nice and fairly normal.

The difference between Siegward and Andre, Irina, and Cornyx is that Siegward is out fighting alongside you, while the other three just sorta mind their own business in safety. They are incredibly helpful, but they aren't on the frontlines with you. They aren't fighting horrors every day and aren't being driven crazy by dying over and over again.
It was just last week that I beat Yhorm without the Storm Ruler when I was fighting with Catarina... I almost felt bad* after killing him so many times so easily with it... But it really is sad, I never knew the true story of Yhorm... My question is, Who is doing this hollowing? Who is the real *King* of hollows that keeps bringing them back? Will we find out in Ringed City? I want to know, who is really pulling the strings in the lands of the hollows...

I personally think the hollowing is actually the curse of the very flame everyone is so deperate to link.
Think about it: Gwyn linked it for the first time, becoming a Lord of Cinder. But when we fight Gwyn in the end, he is mindlessly storming towards us, lunging his sword at us, dedicated to strike us down. Don't you think he's been hollowed? He definitely looks hollow to me, and the fact that there is no intro to the fight whatsoever makes it more obvious for me. Sure, it could be that Gwyn is protecting the flame from those who wish to end the age of fire, but since the flame is fading anyway, Gwyn doesn't really have many alternatives. So instead, he could accept the Chosen Undead as a worthy successor. You beat every other lord in order to get to Gwyn, that should mean that you're powerful enough to serve as fuel for the flame.
As far as I can tell from the game's design, Gwyn stays in the kiln (as does the being known as Soul of Cinder in DkSIII) in order to preserve the flame. So maybe the flame is using Gwyn's energy as a kind of fuel, which would make sense because Gwyn is a god (as far as I know) and thus a very powerful being.
So why would the flame cause hollowing? Well, what does fire do? It burns, of course.
In one of his "Secrets about DkSIII" videos, Vaati showed us that Ludleth has nightmares about something that burns him to the bone and hurts unbearably. I suppose that this is the effect of the fire that was linked. If you look at Ludleth, his skin is shriveled and he seems very weak.
If you take a look at the other Lords of Cinder, you might think "they're not showing any signs of weakness" which is true, yet, it is said that they have been revived. Add to that that none of them -- besides Ludleth -- ever speaks a single word to you (and Lothric, who did not link the flame) and instead is out to kill you just like Gwyn. Maybe Ludleth is clinging to the Art of Soul Transposition because it's the only thing he has left, sensing the hollowing that he will soon fall victim to.
The Abysswatchers probably fight for all eternity because they swore to stand against the dark that comes from the Abyss. But seeing as their armor is corrupted already, they've probably failed.
Yhorm awaits the fulfillment of Siegward's promise, so he can rest again and not be involved in the fate of a world he no longer cares for. He has no purpose to live for, but given the fact that he waits when Siegward is at your side -- contrary to when you're fighting him alone -- he might just be at the brink of hollowing, still able to recognize Siegward as his friend.
Aldrich dreamt of another age but has most likely succumbed to his gluttonous drives, meaning he only wants to devour whatever he desires, until the age of the Deep arrvies. I think that because he devoured gods, he withstood the curse for the longest time, since he is so mighty. He might know that he will outlive the fading flame, regarding his dreams of the age of the Deep.
Note: I am not sure whether Gwyn linked the flame before of after the undead curse struck Lordran.
And while I reference Gwyn in the first part, I am heavily focussing on the lore of DkSIII, so I did not really think about much of the lore of the other 2 games.

The reason why I love watching your video is because it explains the well written stories of the dark soul games that so many of us miss because we’re so focus on leveling up and defeating all these hard bosses that we don’t bother paying attention to the amazing story line the game tells.

Fools Gough into thinking he is blind? What happens in Dark Souls when you apply resin to anything? It ignites, flaming for moments, or sparking an electric charge, or coursing with potent magic. Even ruling that out, many resins in nature are acidic. His eyes were burnt by the resin, chemical burn or magical, take your pick. You can see the evidence of burning on the helmet, which I always mistook for blood in the past. It's similar to how the Maiden in Black's eyes are described as, "occluded with wax."

is it just me or is Vaati's voice one of the god damn most soothing voices in the fucking world. I legit have used these vids to help with my insomnia and get at least a little sleep
When I first fought Yhorm I managed to free Siegward after following step by steps on how to continue his quests (I knew that Siegward had a special cutscene with Yhorm and wanted to make sure I did it correctly) and was prepared for the showdown...that Giant blitzkrieged our asses like we were reenacting WW2 and me and Siegward were France and pummeled the poor Onion Knight and me before I even got a chance to retrieve the Storm Ruler. Somehow surviving, I finally managed to get the bloody sword and by the time I equipped it (because I’m a loot hoarder and never get rid of anything), there's Yhorm charging me again and a slap or two later that's all she wrote for me.
Oddly enough, the second time I managed him just fine but without Siegward unfortunately. Probably because I already had Storm Ruler but I was still upset by that anticlimactic ending lol. Hopefully if/when I replay DS3 I manage to survive long enough and have the Onion Knight survive the fight to actually see the ending as it's meant to be for myself.

VaatiVidya, When the flame is linked its normal that people around the one who links the flame get burned too, In Dark Souls 1 when Gwyn linked the flame his faithful Black Knights got taken too although they didnt die like the people of the capital but they did get burned indeed
also i liked this fight usually you use your AI friends as meatshield to distract the enemies when you do the damage during the Bossfight but in this case the real way its meant to be played by you is not taking the Sword but acting as the distraction while Mr Onion kills him! sure they do give you the sword in case you miss his hard to track storyline but i liked it rather than the traditional boss fights in Dark souls 3, I really liked the Bloodborne ones just because they were quite unique
Pruthvi Shetty To be fair the black knights who were burnt with Gwyn came with him. This is like the flame flying up to Anor Londo and burning up the silver knights.
The Kiln is about city sized, so it could be the same kind of thing that happened to the Profaned Capital.
Gwyn's Black Knights are pretty tough, though. It's understandable if they didn't immediately turn into ash and dust like the citizens of the Profaned Capital.
Its seems they went hollow though. It says they typically just wander the land. Maybe thats an effect the dark soul had when it gets burned.

I had just beat DS III a couple days ago and have now moved on to the DLC
I’d just like to say, even though this is like 4 years late, that I truly have enjoyed all of these videos I have watched and it’s very evident that a lot of time and effort goes into each one. They all are a extremely thorough and give me enough to reflect upon this games awesome atmospheric story telling but also enough room to form the parts that are missing with my own imagination, I really enjoy your takes on these parts.

Basically what Happened to Yhorm is what happened to Gwyn. Except instead of sacrificing himself like Yhorm Gwyn tried to sacrifice the soul of man to destroy the Dark.

Damn, i can't imagine how it was for the soldiers that fought against yhorm. The guy is an army killer by himself and with the pancaker shield he would be invisible. A single swipe of this machete would wipe out an entire unit.
I'm running through the game for the first time and for every boss encounter that stands out to me I look for a Vaati's video to know more about them. Then I feel bad for killing them.

Quite happy I was able to follow this stoyline in my first playthrough. I was so surprised when Siegward walked in the bossroom with me.

Both Yhorm and Siegward...examples of a truly great Lord and a trully great knight and friend. Though many of these NPCs live in such a dark, hopeless world and have such tragic ends...their humanity really comes through at times.

Yhorm is by far one of my favorite stories from SouldBorne. So much understandable sadness and pain, paired with the companionship of a loyal friend. Saddening and yet...magnificent.
I wanna see a dark souls game set in the age of black. After the fire has stopped, i want to see what happens as a man in a city, it could be a dark fantasy type scenario where you slowly see the world get destroyed by the abyss and have to somehow fight it back. But like instead of it being an already destroyed city, you see a lively happy city get destroyed and are in the middle of it. This whole linking the fire has had its time, we have an ending now that lets the darkness take over as well, i think the next one should follow that path. Would be amazing, imagine playing a normal fantasy rpg for like an hour than it switches to dark souls-esque rpg with civilians turning into winged beasts and just blood and mayhem everywhere. And you have to maybe escape the city, then get out of that land or something and each time you go somewhere the darkness is right behind you eventually at the end of the game you get strong enough to fight back and you push the darkness all the way back and right at the end right before you save the world from it you turn into the dark soul of man and world goes completely black. Or something....
If they ever continue with the series, I think it'd be entertaining to take place in an Age of Dark, where you have to do whatever to prolong that age, as an equal and direct opposite to trying to prolong the Age of Fire.
