It's not always the head gasket. If you're not losing coolant, it's not the head gasket. If a simple test to see if exhaust gasses are in the coolant is negative, it's not the head gasket. It is a misfire. Could be a bad plug. Could be a bad injector. Or anything else that might cause a misfire.

That's just scary how long that car rattles. I cringe at the 1 to 2 second days when decides to startup for that long. The 3 second startups on those days seems to throw the check engine light and that's what's really alarming to me. This month summer taxes and head gasket kit or maybe head gasket and specific crankshaft, VVTi and oil seal gaskets.

I have had the EGR, Intake and PCV Valve circuits maintenance cleaning and PCV Valve swapped more than once though is like a consumable like the others. Everything else is OG and running mid 40's to mid 50's MPG. Amazing how these can go and is totally worth the head gasket swap. I'm amazed how long this is going with the 1 to 2 second rattle with now my 3rd check engine code thrown when does the 3 second rattle on startup. Almost totally awesome like Gasket Masters! I've had this problem for 135,000 miles now. A fix for me I've found that if once I start the vehicle I let it fully warm up then It does not happen. But if I start the vehicle for just a few seconds to a few minutes then leave over night it shakes like mad!!! So if this is happening to you try to always fully warm up your car each and every journey. I got the car at 100k and soon after I discovered this problem. It was only after 20k or so I noticed that it only happens after I start the car and not allow to fully warm up then leave for some time. The car is now at 238,000 miles

Be aware a bad head gasket is not always the cause of start-up clanking and shaking. If the car is "short moved" and the engine tries to start just before the system is turned off residual fuel in the intake does wonky things that shake the car and sound like gremlins are hammering on the engine. Let it sit a while and all is well.
It isn't a head gasket leak until tests point clearly to it. Just go in and pull the plugs - oh, yeah... remove the wiper shelf first. Jeez. Probably better to do what the Car Care Nut describes in "How to Check for a Bad Head Gasket on Toyota and Lexus Engines"

I've been developing a theory that the reason these fail so much is the constant temperature changes. In a regular car the engine stays on for a drive cycle, in a prius its constantly on and off with sometimes 5-10min intervals.
That interval has got to be enough for the hot coolant to come down in temp 10-20. With temperature fluctuations parts expand and contract, and an aluminum head/block will do so at a different rate to the steel gasket, granted at 20° difference its not much but multiply that by thousands per day its gotta have some kind of effect.

Great video to watch to motivate me to get the head gasket changed. Just threw my third check engine code, though I reset the day after does. Still scary only rattling for 3 seconds which seems to trip the code. 1 to 2 second doesn't seem to. Odd is how some days does and others doesn't. Seems like hotter humid or flat out rainy days.

    • @vikings7683
      @vikings7683 ปีที่แล้ว +3

If you turn car on and turn off before the I.C.E shuts down it will cause it to rattle at next start up. This especially happens if you are just moving your car in the driveway and I.C.E kicks on while moving. Always wait until engine turns off before turning car off. This should solve your issue. Has something to do with condensation build up in the engine if the engine is not able to complete its warm up cycle. Happened to me once or twice and this is what someone explained to me. I have followed this advice and it has never happened again in over 240k. My car is 2013 with 343k on it and runs like new. I bought it used with 109k
If your car runs well, you should do what I and many others do to avoid head gasket failure. Change the ICE water pump and thermostat if your car has over 140k as preventive maintenance as water pump failure is a major cause of gasket failure, from overheating . Also get the EGR cooler and EGR valve cleaned every 100k (new water pump/thermostat and coolant every 100k to 150k), as this contributes to head gasket. This is much cheaper than head gasket replacement and very easy to DIY, using TH-cam vids. Again I have 343k on my car and no issues with head gasket.

    • @jafinch78

@@vikings7683 Since the extended service contract ran out at I think 150K or maybe later, I hadn't performed the Intake, EGR or PCV Valve circuit maintenance so is most likely at fault where I'm guessing the PCV Valve being bad and I overfilled the oil the last oil change prior before going on a 1,000 mile road trip where I also added a bottle of Techron in each of two full gas tanks after getting home. Did stop and go city driving with my Mom shopping all day and am thinking all that combined to my first check engine light and feeling the rattle and vibration when I filled up for gas the first time and the engine was already warmed, so I just drove off. Once the ICE kicked in while barely moving... had the first experience. Would only rattle for about 1-2 seconds, though I had a second warmed up engine experience where the engine didn't kick on until I started driving pulling out of being parked on an steep incline where wondering if maybe the oil overfill issue also contributed. That also threw a check engine light. After that, I made certain to press the gas peddle after startup to assure the engine started and cleared any condensation or coolant prior to driving. I also started to vent my coolant reservoir cap after driving almost routinely and that seemed to reduce the occurrence. About two months after that started, I had the first not moving experience which was the 3rd check engine light that came on after sitting from driving for about an hour on the freeway with a little city driving afterwards. I'm at ~285K, so glad for what little additional maintenance I performed, lasted as long as did. I think also might have contributed was doing the 100% engine radiator block last summer and all winter until in May when I had the first check engine light come on. I never noticed the engine temp going over 205F. Though thinking over 196 probably wasn't so good when did. So far all stock parts post extended service unless something might have been covered under warranty or recall. 2013 Prius model two and even with the situation, was still reliably getting 45 to 55MPG.
I received the Toyota Genuine Engine Gasket Kit to assure I have all the gaskets and am waiting to get a Toyota 12V battery since after sitting, that battery was found at 4.2V which might have restored to 1/3 the CCA using a Hobby Charger with 8S, 10S and 12S charging and then the BatteryMINDer Plus. I also ordered the SAE connectors and outer surface plate so can keep on a tender when not using one.
I also plan to maybe do the Berrymans B12 piston soak prior to disassembly and then a Wynns Air Intake Induction Foam piston soak once the head is removed. Was only consuming ~3/4 qt per ~5,000 miles, so not that bad.

How often does this happen? I`ve heard that the ct200h is one of the most reliable cars on the market. Like they can do hundred thousand miles without any engine/transmission issues. And after I`ve read it on several different forums I pulled the trigger and got a 2018 model for myself. A week ago or so I found this movie and several other examples on YT. Is it a very common issue?
    Cheers!

You can avoid this by cleaning EGR and it's also important to change oil and filter annually. I used to clean EGR of my CT200h once in every two years and no rough idles or knocking sounds (in the winter when engine's cold some knocking for 5 seconds, but it's pretty much normal with these engines). Also check your coolant and oil level regularly. If you're losing coolant, it may be necessary to do head gasket repair.

My 2012 Prius v was having this issue before and after replacing the head gasket. It's only when I started running marvel mystery oil in the engine and adding seafoam to it. Did it stop? It does still give the occasional shutter on start real quick, but that is extremely rare and usually goes away within a few combustion cycles and doesn't last for minutes like it used to the best is we could tell is the PCV valve head failed and just by design? For some reason the oil was splashing on the PCV valve inlet in the crankcase itself. So my issue was actually getting too much oil in the engine. That is part of the reason why these engines end up burning oil as well because of leaky PCV valves and usually even the new valves are kind of terrible and still leak but not as much as an old worn out dirty crappy PCV valve it's not always your head gasket in my car has over 408,000 mi. I put a new head gasket on it at 263,000 mi and it still continued to do that. I took it back to the Toyota dealership that had a one-year unlimited mileage warranty. They checked it and said that they couldn't actually find anything wrong with it and that was back in 2020. It's been over 2 and 1/2 years and over 140,000 mi and the car is still running fine except for it's an oil burner now.

    • @SvenTSchixe
      @SvenTSchixe 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

The EGR valve sticks open and allows too much unmetered air into the engine essentially choking it which makes this rattle noise and all of that extra pressure in the combustion chamber will blow the head gasket.
These guys are not being entirely honest about this, there is more than one way to blow that head gasket.
Generally if coolant is leaking into a cylinder you will get the white smoke out the tail pipe and you will smell it.
There is also and EGR motor ecu update as well as updated air intake manifold design for this car as well as just simply replacing the egr valve first to save some time and money.
Like you said you replaced the head gasket and still have the same problem, had you either tried for the software update first, then replace EGR valve - or clean it, then new air intake manifold - although I heard that sometimes that does not work either, those should solve the problem before going all of the way to replacing the head gasket and still possibly having the problem.
It could just be that the head gasket is pooched from being faulty, but the EGR problems are also well know on these cars and as the saying goes, "start with the cheapest thing first."
      Take care, AC

Question! I had an oil leak a couple months ago and replaced oil pressure gauge where it was leaking and the head gasket as well, it needed one. Did the trick, no more problems on that front. Today I had the 1st cylinder misfiring, code P0301. I see no coolant in the oil so I think the gaskets fine. I switched the 1st and 4th ignition coil to see if it was a spark plug problem. The engine light went off, no further codes on my OBD2 scanner and drives fine with no more shaking upon startup. Could that have just been a bad connection or something? Everything seemed to have been tight upon taking it apart.

2011 Prius 283,000 miles. What I determined my cause was my oil.
I run Mobil 1 0-20 for 10,000 miles. No issues ,only about 1/2 quart missing when changing.
Each time this happened I realized my car had sat for over a day or so usually a weekend . I noticed each time the oil was getting at the end cycle of 10,000 miles, Extreme cold, and bargain gas.
The last time it happened was 1 month ago and it wouldn’t stop, I put it in neutral and it stopped. I finally did the oil change that evening and it next morning it was 25 degrees started just fine.
I finally changed the plugs this weekend with NGK plugs, I removed the OEM Denso plugs to my surprised they looked amazing! So far so good. I agree with man making this video , but I liken the cause for some os us to be poor oil condition and poor gas causing a vapor issue in the head. Just my 2 cents.

Hi. I need help please. My 2010 prius, 97k miles , rattles on cold start when converting to engine. Rattle lasts for about 20 secs and then settles.
Spent lot of money.. changed EGR, spark plugs, cleaned manifold. But made no difference.
I keep a track of coolant level. There has been no coolant loss at all since last 5 months..
My mech says it can be broken spring of a worn flywheel or clutch damper.
As there is no drop in coolant level, could it be possible that its not the head gasket? Does flywheel or damper noise present this way?
Also. I notice that during start while still on battery, if I put the mode in D ( with brake applied) the rattling doesn't happen when the engine kicks, as long as gear is in D.
The rattling happens when in P mode only and not when in D mode .
Any idea what this could be ? Any help is appreciated.thanks

My 2010 Prius has been doing the same rattling off and on, once or twice it almost seems like banging and shaking, but it goes away after around 30 seconds. Problem is that the garage I bring it to says they can’t diagnose it without reproducing the problem, have it doing it again, and it just happens now and then, just enough to make me worried about driving it long distance. Also they say there’s no code coming up and that seems to be what they rely on. I had knocking/rattling and an actual stall on the road maybe two months ago, and they said there was a code for the mass air flow sensor, so they replaced that. It was still sluggish with hardly any “pickup” when I pressed on the gas, but that seems to have gotten better (I’ve started putting in dry gas/STP fuel treatment the past two fill ups and I hoped that would take care of it, and it seems to have gotten better but still has problems). Any ideas? It’s not a constant thing but it comes back.
