Do you have to use American tackle grips with American tackle Reel seats? I was wanting to use another reel seat by Alps as it had the coloring I wanted.
No, you just need to make sure it fits, or make a trim ring to cover any gaps. You could use a small piece of eva to cover the transition between the grip and the reel seat, if there is any.
Do you find the ‘insert sleeve’ style reel seats less sensitive than ream-to-fit, blank exposed, seats? I’m new to the hobby and can’t afford to build a bunch of rods to test and am torn on reel seat selection. Thanks!
This is a great question, and hard to answer. I think if you have a good blank, solid mounting on the reel seat, and good fishing technique, it should make a difference. If you start with a good blank, you will end with good results. The carbon does enhance sensitivity. This just has to do with the way carbon fiber is so solid and it has many fibers to transmit vibrations. I like to build what I like on a good blank, not worried about details like this. I use a ton of carbon, because I like the way it looks. Insert sleeve, ream to fit, and blank exposed all work really well if installed properly on a good blank. Tape arbors work too!
How do you like the G2 grips? I have a K2 blank that I'm building on and am waiting for the winding checks to be delivered. I was planning on using 10 min Rod Bond. I noticed that you didn't use a second tape arbor for the grips like they do on the AT video. Do you feel like the grips are solid enough with just the pre-installed arbors and winding checks?
The paste epoxy fills in much of the gaps not needing a tape arbor. I watched the video Don made and know that it wouldn't hurt to add it. I feel once the winding checks are in place the grip is very stable and not going anywhere. If I felt like there would be to much play, I would add an arbor. I absolutely love these grips. I make my own carbon grips, but these look so good and the smooth finish is what you want. Plus you don't have to make the carbon from scratch.
I have done it several different ways and find, sensitivity is transferred through the blank, to your hand. I can't tell a difference! But in theory, you are correct.
nice!

u loose a lot of the carbon benefits using this tape and lot of resin
