Returning my ProGrade and buying the SanDisk. Thanks for your great review and clarification. Well done. I was also concerned with the magnetic base on the ProGrade that comes with a warning about possible hard drive interruption. No thank you! Also the short cords provided aren't long enough to get it far enough away from my hard drives. I also tried to reach out to ProGrade for a few days both online and with phone messages (Couldn't get a live person despite many attempts). No response. ProGrade suggestion: Offer a version WITHOUT the magnetic base, make it removable and man your support lines, So back goes the ProGrade...and hello SanDisk!
Just found your channel! And its came at the best time possible, the sandisk professional does the job i need, to offload cards fast and not heat up the card like its in an oven! Your review has definitly made me happy in my purchase with a reader for my sandisk 512gb cfexpress card for my R5! Appectie it dude :)
Let’s go!!! So happy to hear that, Zach! I use that exact same setup and it’s so help offloading data from the R5 quickly. Glad this video helped, thanks so much for watching! :)
Just ordered the 2 versions of the Sandisk Pro based on the strength of this review. The other model has the same matching cabinet design and dimensions and reads CF Cards type one: SD Cards UHS type ii and microSD UHS type ii cards: reader has 3 separate slots for the above. Type ii cards are backwards compatible which means type 1 cards can be read (and used) as well. These look like $$ well spent. 😊😊😊
this video came up on YT when I searched "cfexpress type b reader" it was one of the top 3 shown so I wanted to leave that info here. Nice video, I just got the R5 (2 days ago) and I'm loving it as my EOSRP upgrade. I also wanted to say that I bought a CHEAP reader also on Amazon- returning tomorrow- and I might go for this one now. Nice videos man, keep them up!
Hey that's awesome to hear! Thanks for letting me know, Yves, and thank you for watching, too! So stoked to hear you're loving your R5, it's one of my favorite cameras I've ever used. Appreciate you man!!
The slowing down of the transfer is probably down to the Mac's cache ~ Nothing you can do about that. Temperature also adds to the slow down. The faster the activity, the hotter something gets.
I would love to see a test where a strong fan is blowing on the ProGrade to get some sort of indication if heat might be responsible for the slow down.
Would be curious to see the results between the ProGrade Thunderbolt 3 Reader and the Sandisk Pro. ProGrade offers 2 types of CFExpress readers, but the TB3 one is almost always sold out.
Hey John! I’ve only had positive experiences with SanDisk. Their CF Express cards are super fast and reliable, and everyone I know who uses them, loves them. I agree though, it’s important to do deep research on these things! Thanks so much for watching!
i would proffer that the difference may be down to SanDisk QuickFlow technology, which i know that that reader has, and IF your card is also QuickFlow enabled then that will likely be why.
Will the sandisk reader work with Angelbird cards? I've heard that some readers have issues with different brands. Will read one brand but won't read another one.
That totally works too! I actually used to do that for a long time just so I didn't take the cards in and out of my camera so much. But from personal experience, the in-camera transfer speed is a lot slower than using a CFExpress reader.
Terrific review. Hope you can review a iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) w/magic keyboard + pen sometime soon. Would love to hear your evaluation of these…Many thanks for this incisive review. 🙏😊
I just thought my CFexpress was hot after transfer because all the fire I shot on that card.

This helped me make up my mind. Buying the SD now. Thx
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!

may be cache on a mac. what you need to do is create two 256gb with different content of file for each reader then try to transfer again.

Also ordered mine based on this video. Thanks for testing stuff so we don't have to. :D
You’re going to love it! Thanks so much for watching! 😊
Will the CFexpress reader transfer XQD card data?
I want more Future Steven in my life please
I would love to see a test where a strong fan is blowing on the ProGrade to get some sort of indication if heat might be responsible for the slow down.
Next time can you please show us the read speeds.
Doesn't your computer tell you the transfer speeds? I know 4 minutes is faster than 8 minutes.... but WHAT IS THE TRANSFER SPEED?
Anyone else notice that Strymon folder? 👀 Cool idea for a video, Steven!
Good EYE, Joe!!! That might make an appearance in a future video 👀 thanks so much for watching dude!!
So glad I’m not the only one
Nice Test Steven - Thanks
Thanks for watching, Marc!!

Absolutely! I’ll look into that one for a potential future comparison. Thanks for watching, Luke!!
The ProGrade Thunderbolt is the one to go. Stefano
so what about sandisk card? are they reliable? cfexpress are expensive so better to make a deeper research

Thank you for that test!
Which model prograde reader did you use ? was it the dual slot usb 3.2 gen 2 ( 10Gbps) ? or ?
Will the sandisk reader work with Angelbird cards? I've heard that some readers have issues with different brands. Will read one brand but won't read another one.
i get confused w/memory cards & readers especially when I'm copying verses just moving, the speeds are all over the place
Can I transfer to android phone and what can I expect sped and quality of footage??
LoL my CFE B card gets super hot from the plastic Sony card reader. Thanks for the review. Now I have to buy an aluminum card reader.
Haha! Yeah, those plastic readers definitely get hot. This SanDisk one or any other aluminum enclosed ones dissipate heat so much better. Worth it!
Is there any readers you recommend for usb 3.0 ? My iMac and MacBook Air do not have usb c unfortunately
Shit!
I am using that Prograde reader!
I hope any firmware update for it.
Any update?
to be fair the san disc reader is optimized for the san disc card
i have this sandisk reader and the fast Angelbird sx160 pro but only have 600MB/s. I will buy the prograde tb3 reader
You think the cf express card type B there wouldn't be such a massive time issue.
It's reading cfexpress A or B ? Or both of them.
This reader is for cfexpress type B!
Will the San Disk CF Express Pro-Reader work with SD cards?
This one only works with CF Express! SanDisk makes a separate Pro-Reader for SD cards.
But we need you to use a type a!
Mac doesn't even show the transfer speed when you transfer files 🤯
Nope 😭😭
🔥
How about just plug the usb cable from your camera to your laptop and transfer that way with the card inside your camera?
That totally works too! I actually used to do that for a long time just so I didn't take the cards in and out of my camera so much. But from personal experience, the in-camera transfer speed is a lot slower than using a CFExpress reader.
Very slow

Here for techy short videos! Nerd alert
My man!! Glad someone else out there appreciates these :’)
I almost bought the wrong reader because of you! You didn’t tell us wtf is a cfexpress card my camera takes Dd cards not this crap.
Great test... thank you.
