    "I'm so fucked up" is better for a dub precisely because of how that word carries weight to an english speaker. "I am the lowest of the low" sounds very much like a direct japanese to English translation and in this case doesn't carry the same weight as what an english speaker would naturally expect to say to convey the feeling that follows an action like this. There are some instances in dub where I think you should prioritize the emotional context or gravity of a sentence over one to one accuracy. It's the feeling that matters here.

    I'm sat here a Dub fan listening to a reaction of the Netflix version and the instant Shinji said that it destroyed everything for me, because Spike Spencer did a freaking phenomenal job in EoE, that line read of him I remember listening to DVD commentaries where they had to fight ADV to both keep the scene in and keep the line read in because it's important to the story and the character of Shinji, for them to take that out in abhorrent
    then I hear "the spear of Lon-Jine-Us" and it's like glass in my freaking brain at how bad it is. It's a LATIN word and it's said perfectly fine in the OG Dub "Lon-gin-us" is appropriate in English.
    I'm terrified of listening to more as it's only going to get worse from here I feel.

      And then "May- Jai" for Magi computers.
      That's not just a few slip ups that's a consistent level of bad in less than a half hour.
      for context for any who come across this comment, Magi is pronounced "Mah- Jai." as it's another Latin word which is said like "Ma-Gee"
      the reason we add a "ai" to the end is because of the combination of the "Mah" sound at the start and the "Gee" of G being cut off by the "Eye" of "I" it combined turns "Gee" in Latin to "Geh-Eye" or "Jai" when said in a flowing tone "Mah-Jai"
      How they got "MAY" in there where there's no Y to add the Mah with "Ay' is beyond me other than frank incompetence

      @@UncensoredScionIt's incredibly inconsistent with Seele too. The only inconsistency in the OG dub was calling the instrumentality project the "Human improvement project" in the first episode.

    Aight I know I may be late to this but here's my two cents.... Evangelion to me is the best anime to ever be created, I watched the series and end of evangelion when I was a teen, and I thought the sub AND dub was fine, never really was perfect but it got by. That being said I honestly liked Netflixs dub, head me out... None of the acting in the sub was bad, it was pretty well done (maybe shinjis VA could use some work). But I also wasn t, to me the sub was lackluster in the fact they all sounded the same. I'm not too offended by the change of dialogue either, my boy Kawarou did get his lines stolen yes but who really cares, we all know it's there in our hearts. I was honestly shocked that they put End of Eva on their platform with how batshit crazy it gets

  • @mathu2003
    @mathu2003 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    As a gay man seeing these changes hurt. There relationship is pretty canonically romantic from my understanding if you take into consideration the manga and promotional collaborations. (For example: They had a collaboration with a wedding ring company and Shinji and Kaworu were the two characters they picked) These character relationships mean a lot to queer folks because in anime we are not represented the best a lot of the time. It’s gotten MUCH better as time has gone on but for the time this was pretty amazing to see. But too see what was a pretty progressive thing for the time be altered so heavily by Netflix of all people is pretty ironic and goes to show that you can have two male characters make out and there would still be people who say “well they weren’t actually gay”

    • @mathu2003
      @mathu2003 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      To clarify before someone tries to preach to me: I know it being a gay romance means nothing and yada yada yada but I’m giving my opinion as a gay person and my take on the removal. The video outlines the affects of the story already, I just want to give my perspective from a social aspect.
      Also amazing video that really hits the nail on the head on why the “I love you” was so important to begin with.

    • @bi11lietsuki
      @bi11lietsuki หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      kaworu was mostly manipulating and playing with shinji's feelings throughout the whole episode, so he didn't really mean the "i love you". but the original japanese line actually translates to "i like you", not "i love you", so technically netflix was in the right with it's translation (plus it makes more sense as shinji and kaworu only knew eachother for a couple of days so they couldn't really "love" eachother in that short of a time)

  • @BigTrees4ever
    @BigTrees4ever 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Start off by saying that I saw it in bits and pieces as a kid and never the whole thing so I feel like I’m seeing it for the first time aside from the first episode or two. Personally I liked lowest of the low more than fucked up but I think you had a great explanation for why the original was great. Agree 100% on the Kaworu:Shinji interactions though, but you can’t miss the subtext when watching the episode.

    And then Amazon purchased the rights to the Rebuild movies and had to redub those as well.
    I may be in the minority, but even though I was watching the original series before it was even completely released on VHS over here in the states, when the rebuild movies came out, it took a tiny bit for me to get used to the different casting. Eventually, I really started to like the new voice actress for Rei.
    Listening to the new dub now of the first two movies with Amanda Win Lee back in the role was a bit jarring for me, to say the least.
