Out of so many videos I couldn’t find ANY video that talked about “M” at the end of the word. And I finally found it with this video. Something so simple but extremely necessary to learning this language👌🏻
You are a really good teacher! Explaining the anatomy of pronunciation is SO helpful! It takes the confusion out and demonstrates correct pronunciation. Thank you so much. This is the first time I've tried to learn, or even heard honestly, Portuguese. I'm going to Lisbon soon and this helps so much. Thank you, again.

As a new learner, I don't think anything makes learning Portuguese pronunciation *easy* but this video series is the closest I've seen yet. I'm hooked. I hope this creator has a similar set of videos for all the special pairs of letters that produce different sounds than they would individually, not just the ones that end in "m". Haven't seen any yet but I'm looking.
I'm just starting to learn Portuguese and this was very useful, thank you. I got them all correct but it took me some time to work through them - good practice, muito obrigada
This was an *extremely* helpful lecture, thank you so much! Now I know that the nasal sound is all there is to all those common words that end with an 'm'! I couldn't get past the idea that it had "just a little" bilabial finish until now lol :) I am eager to check out more of your videos that answer questions I have -- already I see in the sidebar the mas/mais pronunciation question that I've been curious about. Thank you!!
Thank you for this video. I really enjoyed the first few, but struggled when you went full out spoken Portuguese.only. When you explained it in English I understand it better.Have you a list of the episodes in English please., I would like a structured order to my learning, rather than jumping all over the place. Thanks again for very informative set of videos. Steve
@@portuguesewithmaria I just returned from my first visit to Portugal. Your teachings were very helpful and I absolutely fell in love with Portugal! Good thing its so easy to get there from Scandanavia! 😅😍😍😍
I wish I’d had this video when I was first learning to pronounce Portuguese words; it would have saved me much grief. In this video, I did fine with the pronunciation except I did discover that I’ve not been pronouncing ‘mim’ as well as I should be. Thanks for giving this instruction.
Yeah, one of the trickiest and the most common mistake... Whenever there's an ending -M just smile and remember that your must keep the grin, no closing the mouth and there you are. :D
@@portuguesewithmaria I guess this is as good a place and time as any to ask: in my studies, I’ve encountered the advice that the nasal ‘im’, ‘am’, ‘em’ and etc should be pronounced like a swallowed “ing” in English. What do you think?
Olá Maria, seus vídeos são maravilhosos, estou aprendendo muito e estou confiante de que posso falar fluentemente. Obrigado por seu desejo de ensinar. (if there are any mistake, please let me know, not only I learn portuguese, but also I practice my poor English), from Argentina, Fabian

Really good video thank you! When using an 'um' word followed by another, for example 'um homem', do you pronounce the 'm' on the end of um as an m sound, or does it stay as a nasal sound?
I would think for a nasalised vowel, the back of the tongue goes down a little, instead of up, in order to let the air pass partially through the nose. For a nasal like [m] and [n], the air goes only through the nose. For an oral vowel, it goes only through the mouth. For a nasalised vowel, the air passes through both the mouth and nose, so I think some closure at the back must go down a little to open up the passage. But I’m sure what this looks like. Only how it feels. And sounds.
Olá, bom trabalho! :) Há dois erros: 1. não é "abram" isso lê-se assim: /abrɐ̃w̃/, mas é "abrem" /abrɐ̃j̃/. 2. porém /purɐ̃j̃/ é a forma correta. Nesta palavra, a letra "o" faz o som /u/. Significa - todavia. 😉

Noup, they could not, lol. :D It's not a matter of our preference or what what is easier or more logical to us, unfortunately. :) If you ask me, I would prefer them to have one symbol for every sound like I have in my native language, Serbian, but that's not the way it works, lol.

Actually, muito has a nasalised diphthong, it sounds as if it were written muinto.
One case the video didn’t cover was m’s between words. For example, how are the first two m’s pronounced in this sentence: estou com um amigo?
There's nothing to cover there, that's why it wasn't discussed. Apply the rules you already learned about it. /ʃtó kõ ũ ɐmigu/.
